Abstract:To improve the performance of NaOH alkali-activated fly ash (AAFA) cured at ambient temperature, silica fume (SF) and metakaolin (MK) were utilized as partial replacements for fly ash (FA). Subsequently, the rheology, compressive strength, and environmental impact of these mixtures were examined. Besides, the geopolymerisation mechanisms were studied by Isothermal calorimetry, LF-NMR, XRD, TGA, and FTIR tests. The results show that the rheological properties of all mixtures conform to the Bingham model. Both SF and MK can improve the rheological properties of FA-based geopolymer pastes by increasing exothermic heat and shortening T2 relaxation time. MK could enhance geopolymerisation by decreasing the Si/Al ratio, thus promoting the precipitation of aluminosilicate gel. However, it is difficult for the SiO2 in SF to geopolymerize under ambient temperature. As a result, MK improves the compressive strength of FA-based geopolymer, while SF hinders the development of strength. The environmental impact assessment shows that the carbon emissions of the developed FA/SF/MK geopolymer pastes are much lower than those of OPC. Production of NaOH FA geopolymers at ambient temperature without the addition of high-carbon footprint Na2SiO3 contributes to the industrialization of green low-carbon FA geopolymers.
