Abstract:The strong optical absorption of water molecules is a key factor in the importance of pulsed laser emission at the E-band for a range of applications, including biological and biochemical sensors. In this work, we develop an Eband bismuth-doped fiber laser using a single-mode bismuth-doped germanosilicate optical fiber (-4 mol.% GeO2), while the emission of laser pulses was accomplished by a nonlinear polarization rotation technique. A domain-wall dark-pulsed laser emission was achieved at the center wavelengths of -1420.5 nm and -1454.0 nm by introducing high optical nonlinearity into the laser cavity using -65 m long highly nonlinear optical fiber. The domain-wall dark-pulsed fiber lasers were generated at a power threshold of 66.0 mW, meanwhile achieving a repetition rate, pulse width, and signal-to-noise ratio of -1.91 MHz, -165 ns, -53.8 dB at a maximum pump power of -155.2 mW, respectively. The high stability of domain-wall dark-pulsed fiber lasers in the presence of noise is attractive for the development of biological and biochemical sensors with high sensitivity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of E-band domain-wall dark-pulsed fiber laser, which perfectly fulfils the current spectral gap of pulsed fiber lasers where strong optical absorption of water molecules occurs.
