20 Years of Speleothem Paleoluminescence Records of Environmental Changes: An Overview

Abstract:This paper discusses advance of the research on Speleothem Paleoluminescence Records of Environmental Changes after it have been first introduced by the author 20 years ago. It is demonstrated that most of the progress in this field was made in result of the operation of the International Program Luminescence of Cave Minerals of the commission on Physical Chemistry and Hydrogeology of Karst of UIS of UNESCO. Potential, resolution and limitations of high resolution luminescence speleothem proxy records of Paleotemperature, Solar Insolation, Solar Luminosity, Glaciations, Sea Level advances, Past Precipitation, Plants Populations, Paleosoils, Past Karst Denudation, Chemical Pollution, Geomagnetic field and Cosmic Rays Flux variations, Cosmogenic Isotopes production and Supernova Eruptions in the Past, Advances of Hydrothermal Waters, and Tectonic Uplift are discussed. It is demonstrated that speleothems allow extremely high resolution (higher than in any other paleoclimatic terrestrial archives) and long duration of records. Some speleothems can be used as natural climatic stations for obtaining of quantitative proxy records of Quaternary climates with annual resolution.

Abstract:Speleothems from cold high-elevation (and high-latitude) caves are sensitive paleoenvironmental archives, because they form close to the freezing point of water, and Alpine or Arctic soils – the source of carbon dioxide for carbonic-acid dissolution – are thin and experience a short vegetation period. Climatic cooling is therefore likely to disrupt the growth of these speleothems. However, growth hiatuses may paradoxically be overcome when atmospheric cooling leads to lowering of the equilibrium-line altitude and expansion of temperate glaciers over the karst system, which prevents the latter from freezing. Caves in mountain regions of the mid to high latitudes had a much higher chance of being covered by glaciers during cold climatic periods than caves at lower elevations, which were often in the permafrost zone. These periods without frost in caves covered by temperate glacier ice can be recorded by so-called subglacial speleothems if the host rock contains disseminated pyrite. Widely present in impure limestones, dolostones, and marbles, oxidation of this sulfide mineral gives rise to sulfuric-acid dissolution of the host rock, replacing the carbonic-acid dissolution that operates during warm climate periods. This review summarizes the research history of subglacial speleothems, beginning with seminal studies of Castleguard Cave, which extends beneath the Columbia Icefield in Western Canada. Subsequent work on a number of caves in the Eastern and Western Alps in Europe has shown that speleothems from such subglacial environments are widespread and provide unprecedented opportunities to obtain records of environmental change covering the long glacial periods. However, the proxy system behavior of these settings has yet to be fully developed. We therefore propose a suite of diagnostic criteria, some untested, by which to identify and interpret subglacial speleothems, with recommendations for future research. The combination of high δ 13 C (at or above host rock values) and low δ 18 O provide a robust first-order proxy for subglacial environments, while trace-element and sulfate stable-isotope (δ 34 S and δ 18 O) data can elucidate the dissolution pathway and redox conditions resulting from ice cover. When studies of subglacial speleothems are combined with conventional warm-climate speleothems controlled by soil dynamics, as well as locally present cryogenic cave carbonates (an indicator of the presence of paleo-cave ice accumulations), the possibility of exploiting the full paleoclimate potential of Alpine and Arctic caves on glacial-interglacial timescales opens up.

Abstract:Speleothems are well-proven archives of terrestrial climate variation, recording mean temperature, rainfall, and surface vegetation data at subannual to millennial resolution. They also form within the generally stable environment of caves, and thus may remain remarkably well preserved for many millions of years and, most important, can be dated radiometrically to provide robust chronologies that do not rely on orbital tuning, ice-flow modeling, or estimates of sediment deposition rates. The recent adaptation of the U-Pb dating technique to speleothems has greatly extended their potential as paleoclimate recorders back into the more distant geological past, well beyond the similar to 500 k.y. limit previously imposed by U-series techniques, but the opportunities presented by these new methods have yet to be fully explored. As an extreme example, here we report on samples recovered from Permian cave fills, the oldest radiometrically dated speleothems so far documented. Using state of the art analytical techniques it is possible to determine not only their age and state of preservation, but also to extract apparently nearly pristine climate proxy data. Armed with these methods, it now seems reasonable to apply the lessons learned from more recent speleothems to ancient materials, wherever they can be found, and of whatever age, to generate snapshots of paleoclimate that can be used to greatly refine the records preserved within the sediments and fossils of the time.
Towards a High-Resolution Speleothem Fluid Inclusion Water Isotope Record for the Holocene from Milandre Cave, Switzerland

Abstract:Speleothem fluid inclusions contain relics of past precipitation water, which constitute a powerful tool for studying the past hydrological cycle. Analyses of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of the water stored in fluid inclusions allow the reconstruction of paleoclimate information such as temperature. A previous study has shown the potential of speleothems from Milandre Cave to address temperature-related issues such as the so-called “Holocene temperature conundrum”. It additionally shows the main Holocene climate feature such as the cooling occurring at the Younger Dryas or the 8.2 ka event. The mean temporal resolution achieved for the samples is relatively high, with sampling intervals ranging between 10 years for the most recent times and 50-70 years for the early Holocene. Using our new analytical line at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel, we aim to increase the temporal resolution of the record by a factor two to four in order to provide highly-resolved water isotope and inferred temperature records for the entire Holocene. The revised Milandre Cave Fluid Inclusion temperature (MC-FIT) allows us to gain more detailed information on shorter scale events such as the 8.2 ka cooling and other prominent Holocene climatic events. The new MC-FIT record, supported by additional speleothems from neighboring caves, allows a better understanding of the central European annual temperature variability during the Holocene.

Abstract:Through the Earth's ~ 4.54 billion year history, icehouse climates have been relatively short-lived but have exerted a significant impact on the evolution of the habitable environment. These icehouse episodes, such as those that occurred in the Cryogenian, mid-Ediacaran, Late Ordovician, and Late Paleozoic, developed through the complex interaction of Earth System processes; however, there is still ongoing debate regarding the causes, processes, and consequences of these glaciations. To improve our understanding of the past history of icehouse climates and the responses of the Earth System, we present this new special issue entitled The Earth System during Icehouse Climate Modes: Contributions from Glacial Records in China. This special issue includes eighteen papers that focus on four major icehouse events: the Cryogenian Snowball Earth glaciations (Sturtian and Marinoan global glaciations), the Ediacaran glaciation, the Ordovician glaciation, and the late Paleozoic Ice Age. This collection of papers provide novel insights into glacial processes, marine environments, and chemical weathering through key intervals of Earth History. We anticipate that this special issue will attract wide interest across the geosciences field.

Abstract:The incorporation of water isotopologues into the hydrology of general circulation models (GCMs) facilitates the comparison between modeled and measured proxy data in paleoclimate archives. However, the variability and drivers of measured and modeled water isotopologues, as well as the diversity of their representation in different models, are not well constrained. Improving our understanding of this variability in past and present climates will help to better constrain future climate change projections and decrease their range of uncertainty. Speleothems are a precisely datable terrestrial paleoclimate archives and provide well-preserved (semi-)continuous multivariate isotope time series in the lower latitudes and mid-latitudes and are therefore well suited to assess climate and isotope variability on decadal and longer timescales. However, the relationships of speleothem oxygen and carbon isotopes to climate variables are influenced by site-specific parameters, and their comparison to GCMs is not always straightforward.

Mild temperatures and hydrological availability are conditions that tend to stimulate soil CO2 production due to denser vegetation cover and higher microbial activity. In such situations, waters enriched with dissolved carbonate are common and can infiltrate in the karstic system. This study compiles 158 dates from 34 speleothems collected in nine caves in the Northeastern Iberia to distinguish the time intervals with speleothem formation. A clear connection of speleothem growth and interglacial periods is established but precesssional influence is also observed, being periods of maxima insolation those with ideal conditions to produce karstic formations such as speleothems. The Holocene is without doubt the best represented period in the available records. However, last centuries were not characterized by an important development of speleothems in the studied caves.

Abstract:Western Europe is the region with the highest density of published speleothem δ18O (δ18Ospel) records worldwide. Here, we review these records in light of the recent publication of the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis (SISAL) database. We investigate how representative the spatial and temporal distribution of the available records is for climate in Western Europe and review potential sites and strategies for future studies. We show that spatial trends in precipitation δ18O are mirrored in the speleothems, providing means to better constrain the factors influencing δ18Ospel at a specific location. Coherent regional δ18Ospel trends are found over stadial-interstadial transitions of the last glacial, especially in high altitude Alpine records, where this has been attributed to a strong temperature control of δ18Ospel. During the Holocene, regional trends are less clearly expressed, due to lower signal-to-noise ratios in δ18Ospel, but can potentially be extracted with the use of statistical methods. This first assessment highlights the potential of the European region for speleothem palaeoclimate reconstruction, while underpinning the importance of knowing local factors for a correct interpretation of δ18Ospel.

Abstract:Focusing on the evolution of coral reefs in the South China Sea, this special issue is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of Holocene environmental and climate changes in the region and their driving mechanisms. It comprises twenty-four papers organised into seven themes: (1) Palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment evolution recorded by coral reefs; (2) Palaeo-ENSO activity recorded by coral reefs; (3) Palaeo-storm activity recorded by coral reefs; (4) The formation and evolution of coral reefs; (5) Carbonate diagenesis in coral reefs; (6) The application of new geochemical record indicators to coral reefs; and (7) Lipid biomarker records in coral reefs. This special issue provides an improved understanding of Holocene paleoclimates and paleoenvironments within the South China Sea, and the development of its coral reefs. It is hoped that these findings will deepen our knowledge of the natural and anthropogenic processes that contribute to climate and environmental change in the region, and aid the long-term protection of coral reef systems.

Abstract:Palaeoclimate information on multiple climate variables at different spatiotemporal scales is becoming increasingly important to understand environmental and societal responses to climate change. A lack of high-quality reconstructions of past hydroclimate has recently been identified as a critical research gap. Speleothems, with their precise chronologies, widespread distribution, and ability to record changes in local to regional hydroclimate variability, are an ideal source of such information. Here, we present a new version of the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and AnaLysis database (SISALv3), which has been expanded to include trace element ratios and Sr isotopes as additional, hydroclimate-sensitive geochemical proxies. The oxygen and carbon isotope data included in previous versions of the database have been substantially expanded. SISALv3 contains speleothem data from 365 sites from across the globe, including 95 Mg/Ca , 85 Sr/Ca , 52 Ba/Ca , 25 U/Ca , 29 P/Ca , and 14 Sr-isotope records. The database also has increased spatiotemporal coverage for stable oxygen (892) and carbon (620) isotope records compared with SISALv2 (which consists of 673 and 430 stable oxygen and carbon records, respectively). Additional meta information has been added to improve the machine-readability and filtering of data. Standardized chronologies are included for all new entities along with the originally published chronologies. Thus, the SISALv3 database constitutes a unique resource of speleothem palaeoclimate information that allows regional to global palaeoclimate analyses based on multiple geochemical proxies, permitting more robust interpretations of past hydroclimate and comparisons with isotope-enabled climate models and other Earth system and hydrological models. Abstract:This paper introduces a special issue on The Changing Face of the Mediterranean: Land Cover, Demography, and Environmental Change, which brings together up-to-date regional or thematic perspectives on major long-term trends in Mediterranean human–environment relations. Particularly, important insights are provided by palynology to reconstruct past vegetation and land cover, and archaeology to establish long-term demographic trends, but with further significant input from palaeoclimatology, palaeofire research and geomorphology. Here, we introduce the rationale behind this pan-Mediterranean research initiative, outline its major sources of evidence and method, and describe how individual submissions work to complement one another.

Abstract:The geometry of the surroundings of caves and water infiltration zones, as well as the processes of rainfall infiltration in karst areas, are complex and not yet fully understood. However, this knowledge is crucial for interpreting climate reconstructions based on speleothems, for studying water recharge in karst areas, and for the conservation of prehistoric cave heritage. To deepen our understanding of this subject, we chose a typical shallow cave, the Villars Cave in southwestern France, which have been monitored for decades, and numerous studies have been conducted on the current environment and speleothems. The first question we addressed was the input signal of precipitation above the Villars Cave. What is the source of precipitation above the cave, and how does it vary? New insights of the Heinrich events inferred by speleothems from Northeast Brazil

Abstract:Heinrich events (HEs), characterized by massive and rapid ice-rafted debris from Laurentide Ice Sheet into the Labrador Sea as far south as the Iberian Margin, are observed in some stadial periods during the last glacial, however, it is still unclear regarding to the trigger and response mechanism of the HEs. A landmark work by Wang et al. (2004) was one of the first studies to associate tropical rainfall in southern Hemisphere with HEs, showing wet periods in tropical northeastern Brazil, a region that is currently semi-arid but very sensitive to the hydroclimate changes related to the cold events occurred in the northern Hemisphere, are synchronous with HEs in the North Atlantic. After two decades, we have a new chance to study the relationship between hydroclimate in NE Brazil and cold events in the North Atlantic in the light of much more new speleothem records obtained from TBV and TBR caves, NE Brazil. Here we show evidence of stalagmite growth periods and δ18O records during the last 90 kyrs from NE Brazil, in addition to the HEs observed by Wang et al. (2004), we have newly found wet periods during the HE2 and HE3 and GS 5-8 that were not discovered before. It indicates that previous conclusions that the orbital insolation also modulated these events on millennial timescales need to be reinterpreted, and also provides new insights to understand the mechanisms of the HEs and why the HEs only occurred in some Heinrich Stadials. Additionally, we also compare detailed structures of each HE inferred from cave δ18O records in NE Brazil with sea surface temperature and other records in the Atlantic realm, which deepens our understanding of the trigger-response mechanisms of the HEs and its effect on the hydroclimate in the NE Brazil.
A New Insight of the MIS 3 Dansgaard-Oeschger Climate Oscillations in Western Europe from the Study of a Belgium Isotopically Equilibrated Speleothem

Abstract:The Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 records abrupt transitions from cold stadial to temperate interstadial climate conditions, termed Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events. Reconstructing these rapid climate changes is crucial for documenting the prevailing climatic conditions in Europe. However, only few continental records are available to define the continental climatic responses to DO changes. Here, the elemental and stable isotope compositions of a flowstone speleothem in Belgium covering the MIS 3 are documented. This speleothem precipitated under equilibrium conditions based on Δ48 thermometry, allowing the use of Δ47 thermometry with confidence. The acquired unique thermometry paleoclimatic dataset enables the reconstruction of temperature based on the hydrological information (oxygen-18 of drip water; δ18Ow) and sheds new light on the DO climate variations. A temperature differential of ~7°C is associated with alternating temperate warm and wet Interstadials to cold and dry stadials. The DO-12 is the most pronounced MIS 3 interstadial in the record and appears to be marked by a delay of 1000 years between climate enhancement (warmer temperature) and water availability (moisture increase). By combining our speleothem record with other continental and marine archive, the spatial variability of DO changes in western Europe during the MIS 3 is defined. A gradual climate deterioration with colder and drier conditions, associated with the Heinrich 4 event, progressed southwards through Europe. Interestngly, this spatial climatic degradation occured during the last phase of Neanderthal populations occupation in Europe. Our data provides better understanding on proxy interpretation thanks to our clumped isotope measurement but also on environmental constraints for human mobility models.

Abstract:Polar ice cores play a central role in studies of the earth's climate system through natural archives. A pressing issue is the analysis of the oldest, highly thinned ice core sections, where the identification of paleoclimate signals is particularly challenging. For this, state-of-the-art imaging by laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has the potential to be revolutionary due to its combination of micron-scale 2D chemical information with visual features. However, the quantitative study of record preservation in chemical images raises new questions that call for the expertise of the computer vision community. To illustrate this new inter-disciplinary frontier, we describe a selected set of key questions. One critical task is to assess the paleoclimate significance of single line profiles along the main core axis, which we show is a scale-dependent problem for which advanced image analysis methods are critical. Another important issue is the evaluation of post-depositional layer changes, for which the chemical images provide rich information. Accordingly, the time is ripe to begin an intensified exchange among the two scientific communities of computer vision and ice core science. The collaborative building of a new framework for investigating high-resolution chemical images with automated image analysis techniques will also benefit the already wide-spread application of LA-ICP-MS chemical imaging in the geosciences.

Abstract:The Andean Mio-Pleistocene basins located south of 21° S offer a unique opportunity to study the effect of the uplift of one of the highest mountain ranges of our planet on aspects as varied as the sedimentary paleoenvironments, magmatism, paleontological record, tectonics, and climate. The purpose of this special issue is to show the recent advances in the understanding of the evolution of these basins and to update the recently proposed schemes for each of the different lines of research. This special issue contains works related to depositional environments, paleontology, tectonics and sedimentation, paleoclimatic evolution, paleogeographic reconstructions, regional-scale correlations, magmatism, new chronostratigraphic schemes, and sequence stratigraphic models. The idea for this Special Volume was born at the VI Symposium on the Miocene-Pleistocene of Central and Northern Argentina in December 2021 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. However, the original proposal was expanded with contributions from geologically related areas. This special issue includes seventeen novel articles about different aspects of the Andean basins of South America during the Miocene-Pleistocene (Fig. 1).

Abstract:This editorial introduction highlights four of the principal themes in late-Quaternary research on summer-dry, mediterranean-type environments: first, issues of historical biogeography, such as convergent evolution; second, the synchroneity of past climate change between and within different regions; third, how far mediterranean-type environments represent cultural constructs or pristine habitats; and, fourth, the environmental future of mediterranean-type regions - for example, whether past records can help inform our understanding of how their distinctive biotas and often fragile landscapes will respond to predicted climate change. These issues are illustrated from three of the world's five mediterranean-type regions: the Western Cape Region of South Africa, South and Western Australia, and the Mediterranean Basin.
