Abstract:A European view of loess history is presented. The major events, or ‘great moments’, considered are (1) Karl Caesar von Leonhard names loess; (2) Charles Lyell popularises loess; (3) Richthofen solves ‘The Loess Problem’; (4) John Hardcastle relates loess to climate; (5) Pavel Tutkovskii makes clear the role of glaciers in loess genesis; (6) V.A. Obruchev makes the case for desert loess; (7) L.S. Berg propounds the ‘in-situ’ theory of loess formation; (8) Rudolf Grahmann maps loess in ‘Europa’; (9) R.J. Russell adopts the ‘in-situ’ idea; (10) Liu Tungsheng pioneers Chinese loess stratigraphy; (11) Julius Fink focuses loess research in the INQUA Loess Commission; and (12) George Kukla reshapes the Quaternary by way of loess research. The need for Chinese, Russian, and North American accounts to balance an authoritative view of loess history is recognized. The truly critical moment in the 20th century was the discovery by Liu Tungsheng and his colleagues of multiple palaeosols within the Chinese loess and the associated realization that these implied a multi-event Quaternary.

Quantitative characterization of microstructure and research on spatial variation characteristics of loess of different strata in Luochuan, Shaanxi, China

Abstract:The complete sequence of loess strata in Luochuan has become a typical section in loess strata, and is the main focus of research for many scholars studying loess. We were based on the theory of aeolian loess and established a set of quantitative index parameters for loess microstructure through our previous research, such as equivalent diameter, sphericity, morphology ratio, orientation angle Phi, orientation angle Theta, pore Eq-Radius, throat Eq-Radius and throat channelLength. Through the quantitative characterization of various index parameters of the Luochuan loess, we found that the probability density of each index parameter meets a specific distribution well, and in terms of spatial dimension, it shows that as the depth of the strata increases, the average particle size and the mode of pore Eq-Radius, throat Eq-Radius and throat channelLength generally increase, while the mode of particle morphology ratio generally decreases. In addition, loess particles in deeper strata are less prone to vertical sedimentation and tend to deposit gently or horizontally. Most particles in different strata are distributed in a northwest or southwest direction. During the formation period of strata, the main cause for spatial differences is the material carrying force. We conducted a statistical analysis on the correlation between the macroscopic physical properties of loess and its microstructure index parameters. Specifically, we found a positive correlation between loess density and the average particle size and the mode of particle equivalent diameter, Additionally, we found a negative correlation between loess liquid limit and plastic limit, and the mode of particle morphology ratio. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between permeability coefficient and the mode of pore Eq-Radius, throat Eq-Radius, and throat channelLength.

Abstract:Loess is a special geotechnical material with strong structural properties, and the microstructural characteristics of loess significantly influence its macroscopic physical features, mechanical properties, and catastrophic behavior. In this paper, serial samples were extracted from the continuous loess and paleosol strata of the Bai Lu tableland; with these samples, the optical microscopy-based serial sectioning method was adopted to study the quantitative characterization and variation in the loess microstructure. Three-dimensional characteristics and quantitative parameters of the particles, pores, and throats of the loess were obtained. The results indicate that the volume, Eq-Radius, and major-minor axis ratio of the loess particles satisfy third-order, third-order, and second-order Gaussian distributions, respectively. The Eq-Radius of the loess pores and throats satisfies a first-order Gaussian distribution, and the throat channel length satisfies a gamma distribution. With increasing stratum depth, the particles become more flattened, the throat radii become larger and the pore channels become slenderer. The variation in fitting parameters and the correlations between the macrophysical and mechanical properties of loess were then explored. The study of the microstructure of loess contributes to a better understanding of the catastrophic behavior of loess and the physical mechanism of geologic hazards in this area.

Evolution of Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Loess with Different Landforms in Slope Field under Sand Cover

Abstract:The study aimed at the impacts of the different landforms on the soil physical composition,soil moisture content and soil fertility of the slope loess field under sand cover.The series of samples were collected at section planes and vertical soil layers,in Yinmaquan watershed located on the boundary between Shenmu County and Dongsheng City,where the slope field had the representations.The soil texture,gravimetric soil moisture content and organic matter content of the samples were measured.Based on the analysis of the data,conclusions were obtained: 1) The soil texture and physical clay granule content were indices to indicate the desertification degree and evolvement trend.The study area demonstrated a drier and coarser trend towards northwest.2) There were different evolution laws of soil moisture content with different landform positions.It increased vertically from the top to upside of hilly slope,but decreased from the downside to foot.Whatever position the landform had,there was a similar balanced depth existed for the soil to evaporate,infiltrate,leak and hold water.3) The physical clay granule content had closely relationship with the soil fertility and moisture content.The section planes with higher physical clay granule contents had richer soil fertility and more moisture content.4) Effects of the combination of water,fertilizer and organic matter became more effective from the top to the foot of slope field,indicating that landform always had significant impacts on the series of evolution processes such as soil mellowing processes,soil degradation,soil erosion and soil desertification.Furthermore,the results also highlighted the evolution of soil texture with the landforms and the vertical soil layers,and could indicate the process of soil desertification and materials sources.

Abstract:Micro-structural characteristics of loess in the Xianyang downtown area were revealed using scanning electron microscope.Results show that loess microstructures are horizontally different with different landscape u- nits,and vertically vary with different loess layers.The micro-structural difference between loess layers and pale- osols in a given profile is most obvious.Loess layers mainly have supporting-macrospore and mosaic-microspore se- mi-cementation structures,whereas paleosols mainly have flocculent and coagulum cementation structures.Within a landscape unit,loess in the third and second terraces of the Weihe River is mainly characterized by supporting- macrospore and mosaic-microspore semi-cementation structures,and loess in the first terrace,by mosaic-microspore and flocculent cementation structures.Structure characteristics are mainly controlled by the environments of sedi- mentation,soil formation and loess burying.

Abstract:Aeolian sediments accumulated along the desert-loess transition zone of the Tengger Desert include heterogeneous textures and complex component structures in their grain-size distributions (GSD). However, the sources of these aeolian sediments have not been resolved due to the lack of large reference GSD sample datasets from adjacent regions that contain various types of sediments; such datasets could be used for fingerprinting based on grain-size properties. This lack of knowledge hinders our understanding of the mechanism of aeolian dust releases in these regions and the effects of forcing of atmospheric circulations on the transportation and accumulation of sediments in this region. In this study, we employed a multi-scale grain-size analysis method, i.e., a combination of the single-sample unmixing (SSU) and the parametric end-member modelling (PEMM) techniques, to resolve the component structures of sediments that had accumulated along the desert-loess transition zone of the Tengger Desert. We have also analyzed the component structures of GSDs of various types of sediments, including mobile and fixed sand dunes, lake sediments, and loess sediments from surrounding regions. Our results demonstrate that the patterns observed in coarser fractions of sediments (i.e., sediments with a mode grain size of >100 μm) from the transition zone match well with the patterns of component structures of several types of sediments from the interior of the Tengger Desert, and the patterns seen in the finer fractions (i.e., fine, medium, and coarse silts with a modal size of <63 μm) were broadly consistent with those of loess sediments from the Qilian Mountains. The deflation/erosion of loess from the Qilian Mountains by wind was the most important mechanism underlying the production of these finer grain-size fractions. The East Asia winter monsoon (EAWM) played a key role in transportation of the aeolian dust from these source regions to the desert-loess transition zone of the desert.

Abstract:The results from an intensive experimental investigation on a loess that was retrieved from a typical silty loess zone in the north-western Chinese Loess Plateau are presented and interpreted. Triaxial and oedometer tests were performed on intact and reconstituted samples in a saturated condition. The soil behavior was found to be strongly affected by structure. The compression paths of the intact samples crossed the intrinsic compression line of the reconstituted soil and reached well-defined gross yield points, after which the compression paths converged towards the intrinsic compression lines. Two critical state lines were defined for the intact and reconstituted soils in the volumetric plane as a result of a robust element of natural structure. Comparisons were made with a structured clayey loess retrieved from the south-eastern Loess Plateau. It was found that the effects of structure on the behavior of the two loess soils are similar though they are very different in natural properties. This indicates that their natural structures might have experienced similar forming processes, perhaps related to their common origin. Catastrophic flowslides commonly occur in the study area, and the patterns of behavior observed in the laboratory tests may create some new insights into mechanisms of landslide initiation and subsequent movement as discussed in the study.
Geochemical Studies on the Intensity of Chemical Weathering in Luochuan Loess-Paleosol Sequence, China

Abstract:Major and trace element analyses of the Luochuan loess-paleosol sequence in China were performed in order to understand the cheniical weathering processes occurring on the I.oess Plateau during the last 600 ka. Results reveal that most elements in the loess remain immobile durlng chemical weathering. The typical stable elements are Al, K, Ti, Rb and REE, while the main mobile elements are Ca, Sr, P, Mg and Na. 120ess and paleosol experience the incipient stage of chemical weathering characterized by acid leaching and carbonate dissolution. Alteration of silicates in the sequence seems to be limited. Features of less chemical weathering of the loess and paleosol could he indicators for the dry-cold clinlate dominated on the Loess Plateau during the Quaternary.

Abstract:Abstract Loess has loose metastable structure, which is not difficult to be destroyed under load. As the core and soul of loess structure, it is part of the main research directions of loess engineering properties at present to study its microscopic behaviors and then realize the interpretation and prediction of macroscopic mechanical properties. In this study, based on the analysis of the basic physical properties of loess samples from seven different places, each sample was scanned by X-ray with continuous slice CT, and the three-dimensional microstructure of loess samples was established. According to the computer graphics method, each particle is equivalent to an ellipsoid, and the flattening rate and elongation rate of particles in each sample are quantitatively counted. Taking the particle size distribution (PSD) and shape parameters (flatness and elongation) of each sample as the control factors for generating discrete element method (DEM) samples, a series of triaxial compression simulation tests were carried out, and the microscopic behaviors of each sample were studied within the whole test framework. Comparing the results of seven different samples, it is shown that both PSD and particle shape have effects on stress-strain relationship, dry density and the normal contact force of loess samples. Most of the sand particles (> 0.075mm) are flat particles, while the clay particles (< 0.005mm) are mainly near spheres. When the volume fraction of sand particles is large, the dry density of the sample is the lowest. However, when the content of near spherical clay particles is large and the particle size distribution is good, and the average coordination value is large, which shows that it has strong normal contact force, and thus higher shear strength.
An Experimental Study on Light Scattering Matrices for Chinese Loess Dust with Different Particle Size Distributions

Abstract:Mineral dust suspended in the atmosphere has significant effects on radiative balance and climate change. The Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) is generally considered one of the main sources of Asian dust aerosol. After being lifted by wind, dust particles with various size distributions can be transported over different distances. In this study, an original loess sample was collected from Luochuan, which is centrally located on the CLP, and two samples with different size distributions were obtained afterwards. “Pristine loess” was used to represent dust that only affects source regions, part of pristine loess was milled to finer “milled loess” that can be transported over long distances. Light scattering matrices for these two samples were measured at 532 nm wavelength from 5 to 175∘ angles. Particle size distribution, refractive index, chemical component, and microscopic appearance were also characterized for auxiliary analyses. Experimental results showed that there are obvious discrepancies in angular behaviors of matrix elements for pristine loess and milled loess, and these discrepancies are different from those for other kinds of dust with distinct size distributions. Given that the effective radii of these two loess samples differ by more than 20 times, it is reasonable to conclude that the difference in size distributions plays a major role in leading to different matrices, while differences in refractive index and microstructure have relatively small contributions. Qualitative analyses of numerical simulation results of irregular particles also validate this conclusion. Gaussian spheres may be promising morphological models for simulating the scattering matrix of loess but need further quantitative verification. Finally, synthetic scattering matrices for both pristine loess and milled loess were constructed over 0–180∘, and the previous average scattering matrix for loess dust was updated. This study presents measurement results of Chinese loess dust and an updated average scattering matrix for loess, which are useful for validating existing models, developing more advanced models for optical simulations of loess dust, and helping to improve retrieval accuracy of dust aerosol properties over both source and downwind areas.
A perspective on deposition and erosion of the sand-loess system in North China.

Abstract:There is a land of around 1500000 km2 in north China covered by sand and loess deposits,and the sand-loess deposition system is venerable in response to climatic changes and human disturbance.However,to quantificationally separate which one,the climatic change or the human activity,is dominate driver of deposition and erosion of the sand and loess sediments,is still an open question.In this study,we summarize ages of optically stimulated luminescence dating of the sand and loess sediments,employ geostatistic and remote sensing methods,and collect modern observation data of dust fall and surface erosion,to investigate deposition and erosion process in the past,and their possible responses to climatic changes and human activity in the future on the sand-loess system.Based on these interdisciplinary data synthesis,we suggest that climatic change is the most important force to control deposition and erosion of the sand and loess deposits in north China,and that the sand-loess region is both the source and the sink of dust,depending on climate and surface structure.The loess deposit is a more complete palaeoclimatic archive than the sand deposits.The loess erosion in Chinese Loess Plateau commenced in the geological time;the human activity has accelerated the surface erosion,but it did not substantially change the erosion.Under the global warming scenario,the intensified evaporation in the sand-loess region probably may exceed the increase of the monsoon precipitation,causing drying of the sand fields.A drying sand field will strengthen dust activity and increase dust sedimentation rate in the Loess Plateau.
The genesis, development, and evolution of original vertical joints in loess

Abstract:<p>Original vertical joints (OVJs), which are highly correlated with loess anisotropy, have been considered a non-tectonic source of extensive erosion, gully development, and landform fragmentation in loess regions such as the Chinese Loess Plateau. The existing literature discussing the origin of OVJs lacks a systematic overview of the current theories related to OVJ genetic mechanisms, development patterns, theoretical models, and relationships between OVJ morphologies and loess historical sedimentary processes (LHSP) since the Quaternary. By reviewing the key factors governing the formation and evolution of OVJs in loess, we present both a conceptual framework and a case study to demonstrate the genesis and dynamics of OVJs in the loess landscape. We propose that when the driving force produced by the hydro-mechanical coupling regime exceeds the resistance force due to tensile strength, OVJs appear along the boundaries between different structural units within the loess soils. Influenced by the loess sedimentary effects in the later period (i.e., LHSP), such as loess pile thickening, drying-wetting cycles, and weathering, OVJs formed in historical loess frequently degrade and expand. Based on the knowledge of OVJ dynamics, we reconstruct the evolutionary trajectory of OVJs in the loess profile from the LHSP perspective, which is further confirmed by field observations on OVJ morphologies under different local microtopographical and geological conditions. The new perspective on the genesis, development, and evolution of OVJs enhances theoretical understanding of the formation of anisotropy and structural evolution in loess, which helps describe and model subsurface hydrology and geohazard risks in loess regions.</p>

Geochemical Characteristics of the Loess in Nebraska,U.S., and Their Paleoclimatic Implications

Abstract:Loess is one of the most extensive surficial geologic deposits in Nebraska,U.S..The deposition rate of the Peoria Loess was extremely fast during the last glacial period, especially in Bignell Hill, the Mass Accumulation Rate is highest in the word. It is still controversial to interpret the cause of the mass dust in the central Great Plain.In this paper,the compositions of Nd-Sr isotopes,major, trace elements and rare earth elements of the loess deposit were investigated on the Bignell Hill section in Nebraska.The results suggest that chemical compositions of the Nebraska loess are relatively homogeneous. Compared with the upper continental crust and the Luochuan loess in China,the contents of Fe and Mg are relatively low,and the contents of K and Na are relatively high in the Nebraska loess.Nd-Sr isotopic compositions indicate there is another source with higher 87Sr/86Sr and lower εNd,except the primary provenance of White River Group. The second source is likely to be glacial deposits which were derived from the area of Laurentide Ice Sheet, its contribution even as high as 30%~45%.The chemical index of alteration of Nebraska loess is about 65.7,lower than Luochuan loess in China,showing a weak chemical weathering intensity.The variation of CIA,Na/K and carbonate content in Bignell Hill section reveal a dry and cold climatic condition and weak weathering during Peiria Loess deposit(25~18 ka).This climatic condition was beneficial to the production and deposition of dust thus generated extremely high mass accumulation rate during that time.

Abstract:The evolution and changes of the natural environment in Central Asia are well recorded by Ili loess-paleosol sequence since the Pleistocene.Over the past ten years,based on masses of meaningful exploration studies of the loess in the study area by the use of environmental magnetism,sedimentology,mineralogy,geochemistry and other research methods,significant progress has been achieved.In the paper,we summarized the environmental significance of grain size,magnetic susceptibility,carbonate content,pollen assemblage and other proxies;as well as geochemical weathering features,depositional environment and spatial distribution pattern of the loess and paleosol.The results show that: magnetic susceptibility and color are complex in climate interpretation due to the influence of various factors to certain degrees.However,the combination of pollen and carbonate indicates that there was relatively cold and dry during some paleosol formation periods,and relatively wet during some loess formation periods,and it was the same in the glacial stages.Mineral and element compositions indicate that the Ili loess formed in the a relatively cold and dry climatic condition;and the grain size is a good indicator of a warm and cold climate alternation in the study area.The weathering differentiation of the Ili loess and paleosol is not so obvious,the ground circulation in the paleosol formation period was stronger than that in the formation period of loess paleosol at the Zhaosu loess section.The spatial differences of the loess accumulation in Ili Basin are observed.

Abstract:This study, using Jinan as a case study, systematically investigates the characteristics and geological genesis of loess-like silty clay in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. The primary distribution of loess-like silty clay is revealed through field surveys, laboratory experiments, and previous literature reviews. The chemical and physical properties of the loess-like silty clay were examined, in addition to investigations into its mineral composition, microstructural characteristics, and engineering mechanical properties, in order to enhance comprehension of its attributes and formation mechanisms. The research suggests that the distinctive soil environment in the area has been influenced by numerous instances of the Yellow River overflow and channel shifts over its history, as well as the impacts of climate change, geological factors, and human activities. The primary sources of material for the loess-like silty clay consist of loess, Hipparion Red Clay, and paleosol layers. The discussion also addresses the impact of regional climate on the formation of mineral components. The aforementioned findings hold significant implications for advancing the understanding of historical climatic and paleogeographic shifts, as well as for addressing engineering challenges associated with the distribution of loess-like silty clay.

Nonetheless, in particular concerning the arid context, bulk geochemistry of different sediment archives and corresponding process interpretations are hitherto elusive. The Ejina Basin, with its suite of different sediment archives, is known as one of the main sources for the loess accumulation on the Chinese Loess Plateau. In order to understand mechanisms along this supra-regional sediment cascade, it is crucial to decipher the archive characteristics and formation processes. To address these issues, five profiles in different geomorphological contexts were selected. Analyses of X-ray fluorescence and diffraction, grain size, optically stimulated luminescence and radiocarbon dating were performed. Robust factor analysis was applied to reduce the attribute space to the process space of sedimentation history. Five sediment archives from three lithologic units exhibit geochemical characteristics as follows: (i) aeolian sands have high contents of Zr and Hf, whereas only Hf can be regarded as a valuable indicator to discriminate the coarse sand proportion; (ii) sandy loess has high Ca and Sr contents which both exhibit broad correlations with the medium to coarse silt proportions; (iii) lacustrine clays have high contents of felsic, ferromagnesian and mica source elements e.g., K, Fe, Ti, V, and Ni; (iv) fluvial sands have high contents of Mg, Cl and Na which may be enriched in evaporite minerals; (v) alluvial gravels have high contents of Cr which may originate from nearby Cr-rich bedrock. Temporal variations can be illustrated by four robust factors: weathering intensity, silicate-bearing mineral abundance, saline/alkaline magnitude and quasi-constant aeolian input. In summary, the bulk-composition of the late Quaternary sediments in this arid context is governed by the nature of the source terrain, weak chemical weathering, authigenic minerals, aeolian sand input, whereas pedogenesis and diagenesis exert only limited influences. Hence, this study demonstrates a practical geochemical strategy supplemented by grain size and mineralogical data, to discriminate sediment archives and thereafter enhance our ability to offer more intriguing information about the sedimentary processes in the arid central Asia. Variations in Chemical Compositions of the Eolian Dust in Chinese Loess Plateau over the Past 2.5 Ma and Chemical Weathering in the Asian Inland

Abstract:Major and trace elements as well as strontium isotopic composition have been analyzed on the acid-insoluble (AI) phase of the loess-paleosol sequence from Luochuan, Shaanxi Province, China. Results show that the chemical composition of AI phase of loess and paleosols is distinctive to the average composition of upper continental crust (UCC), characterized by depletion of mobile elements Na, Ca and Sr. The distribution pattern of elements in AI phase reveals that initial dust, derived from a vast area of Asian inland, has suffered from Na- and Ca-removed chemical weathering compared to UCC. Some geochemical parameters (such as CIA values, Na/K, Rb/Sr and 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios) display a regular variation and evolution, reflecting that the chemical weathering in the source region of loess deposits has decreased gradually since 2.5 Ma with the general increase of global ice volume. This coincidence reflects that the aridity of Asian inland since the Quaternary is a possible regional response to the global climate change.

Abstract:Loess is widely deposited in arid and semi-arid areas and is characterized by low dry density, developed pore space, and loose structure, which is not commensurate with high structural strength and shear strength in the dry state. Many natural phenomena and experimental results show that intact loess is very sensitive to the change of water content, and a slight increase in water content can cause a rapid reduction in strength. Abundant information is available in the literature for the collapsibility of loess. However, research on the evolution of loess compressibility during wetting, which is very helpful in understanding loess collapsible deformation caused by long-term irrigation, remains minimal. To this end, in this article, the evolution of the compressibility of intact loess at different wetting stages is investigated by oedometer tests, and microstructure and pore size distribution (PSD) were characterized on intact loess specimens at different water contents before and after oedometer tests by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) methods. The results show that the compression index ( C c ) and secondary compression index ( C α ) of intact loess depend on water content and vertical stress and change abruptly when vertical stress exceeds yield stress. C α / C c values of intact loess are not constant, which increases with vertical stress to a peak and then gradually decreases to 0.025. Wetting and loading can cause damage to the microstructure of intact loess; specifically, loading leads to the collapse of the overhead structure and the transformation from a bimodal PSD into a unimodal PSD, and wetting intensifies the collapse of the microstructure to form a compacted interlocking structure and promotes the transformation of medium pores into small pores.

Abstract:The considerable morphodynamic energy provided by the continuing tectonic evolution of Asia is expressed in high erosional potentials and very high rates of sediment production that make this continent unequalled as a terrestrial source of primary silt. Many of these environments are hazardous, threatening human occupation, health and livelihood, especially in regions of dense population such as the loess lands of north China. Dry loess can sustain nearly vertical slopes, being perennially under-saturated. However, when locally saturated, it disaggregates instantaneously. Such hydrocompaction is a key process in many slope failures, made worse by an underlying mountainous terrain of low-porosity rocks. Gully erosion of loess may yield very high sediment concentrations (>60% by weight). Characteristic vertical jointing in loess influences the hydrology. Enlarged joints develop into natural sub-surface piping systems, which on collapse, produce a “loess karst” terrain. Collapsible loess up to 20 m thick is common on the western Loess Plateau. Foundation collapse and cracked walls are common, many rapid events following periods of unusually heavy monsoonal rain. Slope failure is a major engineering problem in thick loess terrain, flow-slide and spread types being common. The results are often devastating in both urban and rural areas. An associated hazard is the damming of streams by landslides. The human population increases the landslide risk in China, notably through imprudent land-use practices including careless water management. A number of environmentally related endemic diseases arise from the geochemistry of loess and its groundwaters, including fluorosis, cretinism, Kaschin–Beck Disease, Keshan Disease and goitre. The Chinese desert margins also have a major atmospheric dust problem. The effect of such dust upon human health in these extensive regions, including many large cities, has yet to be evaluated, but pneumoconiosis is thought to affect several million people in north and west China.
