Abstract:<p>Liquid‐crystalline polymers have been applied to a wide variety of stimuli‐responsive materials; however, the inevitable mesogenic alignment or extra complicated preparation hinders their further application and large‐scale fabrication. Here, fabrication of free‐standing blue phase liquid‐crystalline (BPLC) film is reported by using one well‐designed system composed of specially designed hydrogen‐bonded mesogenic precursors, which can spontaneously self‐assemble into 3D nanostructures without additional orientation treatment. Upon corrosion in alkaline solution, the BPLC film shows reversible humidity‐responsive behaviors by manipulating their lattice parameters of the nanostructures. The unique stimuli‐responsive behaviors originate from tunable 3D periodic nanostructures of soft materials are reprogrammable, reconfigurable, and visual, showing their potentials for advanced applications as sensor, display, and anticounterfeiting.</p>

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) self-assembling into soft cubic crystalline structures possess significant applications in the field of dynamic photoelectron spectroscopy. However, three scientific challenges limit their broader application, namely, the difficulty to form a free-standing structure due to fluidity, dependence on nanoparticles or polymer matrix to widen the BP temperature range, and high working voltages to reorientate the LCMs. Herein, we proposed a new concept of free-standing BPLC microcapsules (BPLCMs) prepared by microfluidic emulsification and interfacial polymerization. The temperature range of BPLCs could be widened by surface anchoring and physical confinement. The BPLCMs built a color library in the visible region in the thermal response process. Most importantly, the stable BPLCMs exhibited a reversible surface-switch mode driven by an electric field lower than 0.55 V mu m(-1), which was the lowest record for BPLCs. The BPLCMs demonstrate intriguing prospects in the fields of smart display and reversible sensors.
Scalable and Sensitive Humidity-Responsive Polymer Photonic Crystal Films for Anticounterfeiting Application

Abstract:In this study, we fabricate a new kind of ultrasensitive humidity-responsive photonic crystal (HPC) films based on emulsion polymerization and the open mill and bending-induced ordering technique (OM-BIOT) method, which is simple and scalable. The HPC film senses relative humidity (RH) from 9 to 98% for the polymer matrix swells up in high RH and shrinks in low RH, leading to a large reflectance shift (81 nm) and distinct color change. Based on the double-peak reflective spectra of the HPC film, we confirm the gradient swelling hypothesis and find that the thickness is another important factor for controlling the sensitivity and response rate of the HPC film. Except for static humidity, the HPC film can also respond to the dynamic humid flow of blowing and polar solvents, which broadens its application potential. This kind of HPC film shows a vivid structural color, and the humidityresponsive behavior is quick, distinct, energy-free, and reversible, having a great prospect for anticounterfeiting application.

Abstract:Nanostructured humidity sensors have been facilely prepared by solvent annealing of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) deposited on interdigitated gold electrodes and subsequent sulphonation. The structure, composition, morphology and hydrophilicity of the block copolymer (BCP) have been characterized by gel-permeation chromatography, H-1 NMR, FT-IR, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and static water contact angle measurements. Phase separation of the BCP film induced by annealing in CHCl3 vapor and hot ethanol resulted in its fishnet-like porous nanostructure. Humidity sensing properties of the nanostructured BCP based sensor have been examined at room temperature, and the sensing mechanism was examined. Both concentration of polymer solution for film preparation, and the sulphonation duration seriously affected the sensing properties of the BCP based sensor. Under optimal conditions, the BCP based sensor demonstrated high response magnitude towards relative humidity (RH) (impedance change of three orders of magnitude in the range of 40-90% RH). Moreover, it was featured with quick response (t(90%) of 10 s and 13 s for humidification and desiccation, respectively), good sensing repeatability and relatively small hysteresis (similar to 5% RH), which is attributed to its special nanostructure. The desirable sensing performance suggests the potentials of the BCP with phase separation-induced nanostructures as high performance humidity sensing material. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Stimuli-responsive materials have been extensively studied due to their potential in environmental detection and information encryption. In this work, a water-responsive film based on cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was designed and prepared. When humidity of the surrounding environment changed, the film can reversibly change colour due to the absorption and desorption of water molecules. Compared with the water-responsive films that have been reported now, the step of alkali treatment was eliminated and the damage of the film structure was avoided. More importantly, the factors affecting performances of the IPN film were investigated in detail. By changing these factors, the water-responsive IPN film with different performances can be obtained, implying the unique advantage of this novel film in performance control. Finally, a patterned water-responsive IPN film was designed and prepared using a photomask, demonstrating the potential applications of the intelligent IPN films in information encryption and environmental detection.

Abstract:Humidity sensitive polymeric thin films with an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure were prepared by cross-linking reactions of poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) with 1,4-dibromobutane (DBB) and diethyltriamine (DETA) as cross-linking agents, respectively. The humidity sensors so prepared showed a high sensitivity over a wide range of relative humidity (RH) (20–97%RH) and a small hysteresis (∼2%RH). The response time for adsorption and desorption process between 22 and 84%RH was 4 and 20s, respectively, indicating a fast response. The effects of the concentration of polymers, molar ratio of cross-linking agents and polymers and aging time of the precursor solution for dip-coating on their humidity sensitive properties were investigated.

Abstract:A homeotropically oriented polymer network stabilized liquid crystal film with a smectic A (SmA)–chiral nematic (N∗) phase transition was prepared. Thermal switching between light transmission from homeotropically oriented SmA phase and adjustable light scattering from N∗ phase with a focal conic texture can be achieved by adjusting the ratio of two chiral dopants which demonstrate different variation tendency of helical twisting power with increasing temperature.

Abstract:In this study, a zwitterionic polymer/liquid crystals composite film with programming shape-morphing behavior and humidityresponsive self-healing performance was prepared by blending a zwitterionic polymer and liquid crystalline azobenzene compound in solution, followed by film-forming in a mold without tedious or multistep synthetic route. The as-obtained zwitterionic polymer/liquid crystal composite film exhibited programming shape-morphing behavior under different stimuli. In this process, the temporary shape of the composite film was memorized after the removal of the stimuli. Such characteristics would fit the requirements of intelligence and energy-saving for stimuliresponsive shape-changing materials. Moreover, the composite film showed humidity-responsive self-healing performances under wet conditions at room temperature. In summary, the simple design and preparation route of the zwitterionic polymer/liquid crystal composite film with programming shape-morphing behavior and mild condition-responsive self-healing performance look promising for the fabrication and practical application of novel photo-driven devices and soft robotics.

Abstract:Humidity sensitive films with the structure of an interpenetrating network were prepared through simultaneous quaternization and crosslinking of poly(4-vinylpyridine) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) with 1,4-dibromobutane and diethyltriamine, respectively, on the interdigital electrodes. The effect of the composition of humidity sensitive film and the concentration of dip-coating solution on the humidity sensitive properties of the sensors have been investigated. The humidity sensors so prepared exhibit little hysteresis (<1% RH [relative humidity]) and the response time for adsorption and desorption between 80% RH and 54% RH is about 21 s and 3 s, respectively, suggesting a very fast response. Abstract:Abstract Imitating the structures and behaviors of natural creatures is of great significance to scientists to explore novel materials for practical applications. However, the design and fabrication of biomimetic devices with complex and outstanding performances is still on the way. A bilayer film composed of liquid crystalline networks (LCN) film and hydrochromic aggregation‐induced‐emission molecule‐doped hydrophilic layer is prepared. Under different relative humidity, the composite film can deform and change fluorescence color simultaneously. The influence of the content of the hydrophilic matrix on the fluorescent property and humidity‐responsive behaviors of the bilayer film is investigated. Thanks to the mechanical anisotropy provided by uniform‐aligned LCN film, different modes of deformation of the bilayer film are achievable, like bending, curling, and twisting. More importantly, due to the independence of the LCN film and the non‐mesogenic molecules brought by this bimorph strategy, complex alignment of the LCN film and modification by immiscible molecules are realized in a single LCN actuator. Based on the functional composite film, artificial flowers showing synergistic blooming and shape‐changing is prepared. By regulating the molecular alignment of the LC mesogens of the LCN film, the artificial flowers can imitate various blooming behaviors of natural flowers like confederate jasmine and jade lotus.

Abstract:An advisable perfluoroalkyl acrylates functionalized system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to drastically enhance the electric-field responsiveness of blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC), which overcomes the common tradeoff between the driving voltage and response time dependent on the polymer concentration. On one hand, a quick electrical response can be readily obtained from a denser polymer network due to the participation of perfluoroalkyl acrylates in photo-crosslinking; on the other hand, the large rising trend of driving voltage with the growing polymer concentration can be alleviated due to the reduced anchoring energy between the BPLC and surrounding polymer attributed to the lower surface tension of perfluoroalkyl acrylate. In consequence, a faster decay time of 0.54 ms and almost hysteresis-free electro-optical (E-O) performance of the BPLC is achieved, with an efficient reduction by almost half in the driving voltage.

Abstract:Inspired by nature, humidity-responsive materials and devices have attracted significant interest from scientists in multiple disciplines, ranging from chemistry, physics and materials science to biomimetics. Owing to their superiorities, including harmless stimulus and untethered control, humidity-driven materials have been widely investigated for application in soft robots, smart sensors and detectors, biomimetic devices and anticounterfeiting labels. Especially, humidity-responsive liquid crystalline materials are particularly appealing due to the combination of programmable and adaptive liquid crystal matrix and humidity-controllability, enabling the fabrication of advanced self-adaptive robots and visualized sensors. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in humidity-driven liquid crystalline materials. First, a brief introduction of liquid crystal materials, including liquid crystalline polymers, cholesteric liquid crystals, blue-phase liquid crystals and cholesteric cellulose nanocrystals is provided. Subsequently, the mechanisms of humidity-responsiveness are presented, followed by the diverse strategies for the fabrication of humidity-responsive liquid crystalline materials. The applications of humidity-driven devices will be presented ranging from soft actuators to visualized sensors and detectors. Finally, we provide an outlook on the development of humidity-driven liquid crystalline materials.

Abstract:In this paper, by using a novel polymer network and an ion-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy, we successfully fabricated a bistable polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) thin film by the optically-induced polymerization of acrylate monomers followed by the thermal curing of epoxy groups. The stepwise processes not only enable an enhancement in the mechanical properties of PDLC films but also a stabilization of cholesteric textures by polymer networks. The bistable memory effects came from the anchoring properties of polymer networks formed within the microdroplets of PDLCs. The devices prepared from the films can be reversibly switched between a transparent state and an opaque state by an electric field. When the electric field is removed, the states are retained. Therefore, the devices are highly energy efficient.
Reprogrammable Humidity-Driven Liquid Crystalline Polymer Actuator Enabled by Dynamic Ionic Bonds

Abstract:Liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) is a promising candidate in the design and fabrication of intelligent soft materials due to the combination of programmable anisotropy and elasticity. Here, a novel strategy to fabricate reprogrammable humidity-responsive LCP materials enabled by dynamic ionic cross-links were put forward. The prepared LCP film deforms reversibly with the change of relative humidity (RH). However, the humidity responsivity loses after soaking the film into CaCl2 solution because of the lock of hygroscopic groups by the formed ionic bonds. By selectively cross-linking specific regions of the LCP film, distinctive humidity-driven motions of the film could be realized. More interestingly, by the EDTA-2K solution treatment, ionic cross-links can be interrupted, leading the LCP film responsive to humidity again. Thanks to feasibly removable ionic cross-links, the humidity-directed soft actuator was totally reprogrammable. Abstract:Polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (PS-BPLC) is a soft artificial three-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) functional material for optics and optoelectronics because of its superior optical properties. In this work, we demonstrated that PS-BPLC film could sense and selectively detect the xylene, heptane, cyclohexane, dichloromethane and ethyl alcohol vapours rapidly and accurately. When the PS-BPLC film was alternately exposed to volatile vapours and air, the Bragg reflection wavelength of the PS-BPLC could reversibly and significantly shift because of the adsorption and desorption of the volatile vapours. Different organic vapours could be well discriminated by the linearity and the critical concentration at which the Bragg reflection disappeared. This organic vapour sensor also had a good sensitivity, high repeatability, humidity independence and long-term stability, which promote a widespread use in environmental monitoring, point-of-care biomedical analysis and optical security coatings.

Abstract:Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) and polymer-stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) systems are the two primary distinct systems in the field of liquid crystal (LC) technology, and they are differentiated by their unique microstructures. Here, we present a novel coexistent system of polymer-dispersed and polymer-stabilized liquid crystals (PD&SLCs), which forms a homeotropically aligned polymer network (HAPN) within the LC droplets after a microphase separation between the LC and polymer matrix and combines the advantages of both the PDLC and PSLC systems. Then, we prepare a novel thermally light-transmittance-controllable (TLTC) film from the PD&SLC system, where the transmittance can be reversibly changed through thermal control from a transparent to a light-scattering state. The film also combines the advantageous features of flexibility and a potential for large-scale manufacturing, and it shows significant promise in future applications from smart windows to temperature sensors.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Traditional ionic liquids are sensitive to humidity but with long response time and nonlinear response. Pure liquid-state ionic liquids are usually hard for dehydration which have ultralong response time for humidity sensing. The immobilization of ionic liquids provide a possible way for high performance humidity sensing. Hydrophobic materials and structures also promised faster response in humidity sensing, because of easier desorption of water. In this work, we prepared flexible humidity sensitive composites based on hydrophobic ionic liquid and polymer. The combination of hydrophobic ionic liquid with hydrophobic polymer realized linear response, high sensitivity with low hysteresis to humidity. By adjusting the ratio of ionic liquid, not only the impedance but also the hydrophobicity of composite could be modulated, which had a significant influence on the humidity sensing performance. The morphology and microstructure of the material also affected its interaction with water molecules. Due to the diverse processing methods of polymer, highly transparent film fabricated by spinning-coating and nanofibrous membrane fabricated by electrospinning could be prepared and exhibited different response time, which could be used for different application scenarios. Especially, the fibrous membrane made with electrospinning method showed an ultrafast response and could distinguish up to 120 Hz humidity change, due to its fibrous structure with high specific surface area. The humidity sensors with ultrafast, linear response and high sensitivity showed potential applications in human respiratory monitoring and flexible non-contact switch. To better show the multifunction of ionic liquid-polymer composite, as a proof of concept, we fabricated an integrated humidity sensitive color change device by utilizing lower ionic liquid content composite for sensing in the humidity sensing module and higher ionic liquid content composite as the electrolyte in the electrochromic module.</p>
