Abstract:Chiral liquid crystal polymers (CLCPs) with spontaneous ordered structure, unique optical properties and high flexibility are promising smart materials. However, their broad application is inevitably limited by the single attribute of chiral mesophase in the cases of fabricating functional materials with multiple attributes. In this work, a novel and effective method of modifying CLCPs by charged two-dimensional (2D) zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanoplatelets is established. ZrP nanoplatelets can be incorporated into the matrix of CLCPs by the host-guest effect. The dispersed ZrP nanoplatelets can increase the glass transition temperature due to the steric hindrance. The incorporation of ZrP nanoplatelets can increase the thermal decomposition temperature of CLCPs from 274.2 °C to 316.9 °C when the ZrP content ranging from 0 wt% to 20 wt%. The CLCP-ZrP nanocomposites exhibit typical thermochromism in the visible light region in response to temperature. The intercalation of ZrP nanoplatelets can tune the wettability of CLCPs from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity, the contact angles are within the range from 26.25° to 110.0°. We believe the modification of CLCPs by ZrP nanoplatelets paves the way to functionalize polymer matrix by a variety of novel 2D materials, such as black phosphorus, MXenes and transition-metal dichalcogenides, and to fabricate multifunctional nanocomposites.

Abstract:Photonic shape memory (SM) polymers based on liquid crystalline blue phase (BP) films have been fabricated by self-assembly and subsequent photopolymerization of liquid-crystal mixtures. These freestanding BP films exhibit narrow photonic band gaps and high reflectivity in the visible wavelength range. Multiple blue-shift colors are achieved by SM programming process at different mechanical pressures. The blue-shift colors can be attributed to a decrease of effective BP pitch along the viewing direction caused by the compressed deformation of the BP films, which are confirmed by a three-dimensional interometric profile. The deformed BP films can recover to their original shapes and reflecting colors by heating the polymer films to temperatures above the glass-transition temperature. Quantitative relationships between the shape change and optical response are established for understanding this SM effect. What is more, the temporary photonic patterns can be reversibly written and erased for dozens of cycles without apparent degradation, making these freestanding BP films appealing as rewritable photonic papers and optical sensors.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a holographic polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal grating fabricated using a visible laser. As blue phase is stabilized by the interfered light, polymer-concentration gradient is achieved simultaneously. With the application of a uniform vertical electric field, periodic index distribution is obtained due to polymer-concentration gradient. The grating exhibits several attractive features such as polarization-independency, a broad temperature range, sub-millisecond response, simple fabrication, and low cost, thus holding great potential for photonics applications.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:A promising approach to the fabrication of materials with nanoscale features is the transfer of liquid-crystalline structure to polymers. However, this has not been achieved in systems with full three-dimensional periodicity. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of self-assembled three-dimensional nanostructures by polymer templating blue phase I, a chiral liquid crystal with cubic symmetry. Blue phase I was photopolymerized and the remaining liquid crystal removed to create a porous free-standing cast which retains the chiral three-dimensional structure of the blue phase, yet contains no chiral additive molecules. The cast may in turn be used as a hard template for the fabrication of new materials. By refilling the cast with an achiral nematic liquid crystal, we created templated blue phases which have unprecedented thermal stability in the range -125 to 125 [degrees symbol]C, and that act both as mirrorless lasers and switchable electro-optic devices. Blue-phase templated materials will facilitate advances in device architectures for photonics applications in particular.

Abstract:The construction of uniform orientation of crystallographic direction of blue phase is of great importance for its practical applications and the scientific research of multi-dimensional controllable growth of soft matter. With the consideration of the weak thermal stability of blue phase, the uniform lattice orientation of blue phase is combined with localized polymer-stabilization in this work. So the relatively stable fabrication of micro-patterns for blue phase can be realized, and it is promising for researchers to prepare brand new photonic devices. To the best of our knowledge, the relevant reports are rather rare, and the successful implementation of the above ideas is full of difficulties according to current conditions. In this paper, the uniform, patterned and stable orientation of crystallographic direction of blue phase is achieved by using the aforementioned integrated method. Here in this work, facile rubbing alignment is used as the primary way to realize the uniform lattice orientation. Meanwhile, the polymer-stabilization, as an effective technological way, is used to stabilize the frustrated topological structure of aligned blue phase for a better stability and its application perspective. Furthermore, we construct the well-defined micro-patterned blue phase array including one-dimensional and two-dimensional pattern in virtue of facile and effective localized exposure. Simultaneously, the stability of such a micro-pattern under external field is also investigated to evaluate the validity of stabilized superstructure and characteristic behavior of unstable region. As a result, the micro-patterned blue phase array keeps good state even under the adequate exposure to high voltage. Finally, the potential photonic application is explored based on the above micro-patterns which exhibit good optical diffraction effects in the experiment that follows. In conclusion, it really provides a feasible route for achieving stable control about orientation of soft matter, like liquid crystal, and fabricating field-stable and periodic superstructure. Such a research will speed up the development of blue phase liquid crystal in crystallography, electronics, and photonics.

Abstract:In this paper, by using a novel polymer network and an ion-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy, we successfully fabricated a bistable polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) thin film by the optically-induced polymerization of acrylate monomers followed by the thermal curing of epoxy groups. The stepwise processes not only enable an enhancement in the mechanical properties of PDLC films but also a stabilization of cholesteric textures by polymer networks. The bistable memory effects came from the anchoring properties of polymer networks formed within the microdroplets of PDLCs. The devices prepared from the films can be reversibly switched between a transparent state and an opaque state by an electric field. When the electric field is removed, the states are retained. Therefore, the devices are highly energy efficient.

Abstract:In this paper, we use a dynamic mask lithography system to fabricate a polymer-stabilized blue-phase Fresnel lens. Fresnel-zone patterned light is directly generated by a programmable spatial light modulator and then projected onto the blue phase precursor. As blue phase is cured, a Fresnel-zone refractive index distribution is achieved simultaneously. The fabricated Fresnel lens features polarization-insensitivity, a broad temperature range, submillisecond response and high spatial frequency. With easy fabrication and programmable flexibility, this method has great potential for various optical applications.

Abstract:A facile one‐step process to create ordered polymer networks via cooperative photo‐alignment and ‐polymerization is presented. The noncontact method appears independent of both matrix and substrate composition, which will enable the fabrication of next‐generation "smart" plastics for medicine and information security. Spatial control over molecular order in polymeric systems will enable advancements in healthcare and photonics, from soft actuators to data storage and encryption. Liquid crystalline (LC) materials are attractive for their intrinsic combination of long‐range anisotropy and fluidity that enables alignment. Photoalignment represents an attractive noncontact ordering mechanism. However, contemporary hurdles preventing widespread implementation of photoalignment include the use of high‐intensity light sources, restrictions to thin films (<1 μm) and specific substrates, multistep LC syntheses, and costly processing. Herein, an interplay between photo‐polymerization and ‐alignment with commercially relevant LCs is reported. Systematic, in situ monitoring of optical anisotropy using a custom microscopy setup provides unique mechanistic insight and facilitates optimization. The optimized process occurs rapidly (<10 min) from an isotropic state with a one‐step exposure to low‐intensity blue linearly polarized light. As a result, substrate‐independent photoalignment of thick (≈6–38 μm), optically transparent LC networks is demonstrated, along with a wide LC‐matrix scope that includes thiol‐containing elastomers. Furthermore, photopatterning provides excellent fidelity (<5 μm) and access to complex images with multiangle optical anisotropy. This user‐friendly process will facilitate production of "smart" (stimuli‐responsive) plastics for improved human health and information security.

Abstract:Polymer‐stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (PS‐BPLC) is emerging as a promising candidate for next‐generation photonic applications due to its attractive features: nano‐scale structure that enables sub‐millisecond response time, self‐assembly that eliminates the need for surface alignment, and three‐dimensional cubic structure so that it is quasi‐isotropic without applied field. Here, we will look into the photonic properties of PS‐BPLC microscopically and macroscopically, and will focus on the non‐display photonic applications based on these properties. First we will give a general introduction to the polymer stabilization process, general photonic properties, electric field effects and desirable electro‐optical properties of PS‐BPLC. Next we will present applications based on the microscopic photonic properties in the cubic structures with double twist cylinders: photonic band gap, scattering and unwinding of the double twist structure under electric field. Then, we will cover applications based on the macroscopic refractive index change of PS‐BPLC under electric fields, whose mechanisms are further classified into phase retardation, phase modulation, and resonance condition change. Finally we will look into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of PS‐BPLC for photonic applications.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are often regard as a fourth state phase of matter alongside solids, liquids and gases. It has been estimated that one out of every ten new synthetic compounds is a liquid crystal, mainly due to the fact that liquid crystals have been used in Liquid Crystalline Displays (LCDs) for over 50 years. Liquid crystals, often referred to as mesogens, exhibit an unique range of ordered mesophases with anisotropic physical properties, such as optical, magnetic and dielectric anisotropy, for example. These highly anisotropic properties and the ability of liquid crystals to self-organize on surfaces, has led to them being, are used in a wide range of non-LCD applications. These applications include photochromics, pressure sensitive paints, optical retarders and optical compensation films, etc. Highly crosslinked, anisotropic polymer networks, derived from photopolymerisable liquid crystals, so-called reactive mesogens (RMs), have enabled solution-fabricated organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) for plastic electronics. This review will be focus on the relatively recent application of liquid crystals, i.e., the 3D/4D printing of reactive mesogens and subsequent polymerization to form anisotropic polymer networks in advanced additive manufacturing applications. It will highlight the challenges of the synthesis and use of new liquid crystalline materials in 3D/4D printing for additive manufacturing applications. It will show how the study of the successful development of design strategies for the synthesis of novel liquid crystals for flat panel displays is inspiring the development of novel photopolymerisable liquid crystals for additive manufacturing. It is intended that this review will serve to inspire chemists, with little or no knowledge of liquid crystals, or liquid crystal chemists, to design and synthesize new liquid crystals for 3D/4D printing.

Abstract:<p>Liquid‐crystalline polymers have been applied to a wide variety of stimuli‐responsive materials; however, the inevitable mesogenic alignment or extra complicated preparation hinders their further application and large‐scale fabrication. Here, fabrication of free‐standing blue phase liquid‐crystalline (BPLC) film is reported by using one well‐designed system composed of specially designed hydrogen‐bonded mesogenic precursors, which can spontaneously self‐assemble into 3D nanostructures without additional orientation treatment. Upon corrosion in alkaline solution, the BPLC film shows reversible humidity‐responsive behaviors by manipulating their lattice parameters of the nanostructures. The unique stimuli‐responsive behaviors originate from tunable 3D periodic nanostructures of soft materials are reprogrammable, reconfigurable, and visual, showing their potentials for advanced applications as sensor, display, and anticounterfeiting.</p>

Abstract:Polymer 1D photonic crystals with perfect optical tuning and distinctive brilliant colors are successfully fabricated through alternating thin films of PMMA and PNIPAM-co-PGMA, which can be easily processed as photonic paper by combining with top-down assisted photolithograph. The photonic paper is prewritten by ultraviolet light cross-linking with a photo mask and read with water as ink. The writing and erasing process is smoothly reversible by repeatedly exposing the material to water and air. The color of letters written on the paper can be modulated by tuning the cross-linking density and ink temperature. Moreover, multicolors can be integrated onto the photonic paper simultaneously by making the degree of cross-linking of different regions of the photonic paper different. The fabrication method is simple and low-cost, and the photonic paper can be easily manufactured in large areas. The integrated multicolor and its diverse change with external stimuli promises the photonic paper lots of potential applications, such as colorful sensors, security labels, full-color printing, displays and so on.

Abstract:An electrically switchable band-edge laser has been demonstrated in a dye-doped polymer-stabilised blue phase liquid crystal. The light intensity of the laser can be tuned in three-dimensional space with a switching time of submillisecond, which promotes this band-edge laser widespread use in displays, point-of-care biomedical analysis, and optical security coatings.

Abstract:A well‐defined photopatterned polymer‐stabilized blue phase film with self‐organized 3D photonic bandgap is fabricated by using two types of liquid crystalline polymerizable monomers—acrylate and thiol. It exhibits reversible nonsynergistic shift of the photonic bandgap under electric field and visually shows an electrogenic redshift color change in the patterned area. Endowing advanced 3D photonic nanoarchitectures with dynamic controllability is currently in the spotlight of soft‐matter photonics research. Herein, a well‐defined photopatterned polymer‐stabilized blue phase (PSBP) film with 3D electrically tunable photonic bandgap is fabricated by a liquid crystalline thiol–acrylate monomers system. Remarkably, the addition of thiol monomers can effectively improve the electrical tuning performance of the PSBP film and maintain excellent thermal stability simultaneously. The proportions of acrylate and thiol monomers are proved to be a key factor on the morphology structure of the polymer network in the PSBP system. By masked UV photopolymerization, a patterned sample with a high‐quality image and reversible nonsynergistic electrochromism is obtained. With increasing electric field, the patterned region changes from initial green reflection color to a red one, while no obvious visual color change occurs for the shading region with initial blue reflection color. The distinct electrically responsive behaviors are mainly caused by the microstructural difference of polymer networks, which is engendered by the migration of polymerizable monomers during polymerization. The research disclosed herein may provide new insights into the development of patterned 3D self‐assembled liquid crystalline photonic crystal toward anticounterfeiting, displays, colorimetric sensors, labeling technology, and programming photonics.

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals have received widespread attention due to their excellent electro-optical properties for applications in information display and optoelectronic devices. Nowadays, the ultra-rapid development of information technology is posing even higher demands on the speeds of information delivery, processing and storage. To further improve the response time of blue phase liquid crystal in electro-optical performance, we utilize a dual-frequency nematic liquid crystal as the host, doped with reactive monomer, chiral dopant, photo-initiator to prepare polymer-stabilized dual-frequency blue phase liquid crystals (PS-DF-BPLCs). By adjusting the durations of the two voltage pulses, fast electro-optical response of PS-DF-BPLCs is achieved. Both the switching-on and switching-off processes of the PS-DF-BPLC are less than 500 ns.

Abstract:Twelve liquid crystalline polymer network films were fabricated through photopolymerization of cholesteric liquid-crystalline mixtures containing two aggregation-induced emissive-active luminogens. The films exhibit multicolour and white circularly polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors up to 0.85 and fluorescence quantum yields up to 90%.
