Abstract:Benefiting from the unique chemical properties and the adjustable layered spacing, MXenes have been paid more attention to the field of energy storage and conversation, especially towards constructing hybrid structure for the use of Li-ion battery anodes. However, most MXene-based composites are achieved by the ex-situ mixing method on the basis of acid-etched MXene, which makes it extremely hard to maintain a good structural stability in the service process. Herein, we proposed a novel one-step in-situ strategy, i.e. SnCl2 molten salt reaction with Ti3AlC2 for synthesizing Sn-nanoconfined Ti3C2Tx MXene composites. During the synthesis process, SnCl2 not only executed as the Lewis acid to etch Ti3AlC2 for obtaining Ti3C2Tx MXene, but could also be in-situ transformed to Sn nanoparticles confined between the Ti3C2Tx MXene layers. The 2D layer-confined effect inhibited the spontaneous coarsening of metal Sn at high temperature as well as the huge volume expansion during the electrochemical cycles. Meanwhile, the in-situ formed Sn nanoparticles as pillar played a decisive role in enlarging interlayered active spacing of Ti3C2Tx MXene for Li-storage. As a result, the surprising enhancement of electrochemical Li-storage performances could be achieved during long-term cycling. This work provides a novel route to explore the application of MXene based on the molten salt methods.

Abstract:A series of Ti3C2Tx MXene/MSy heterostructures (Tx = O and Cl, M = Fe, Co, and Ni) are fabricated by directly vulcanizing Ti3C2Tx/metal hybrids obtained by etching a Ti3AlC2 MAX precursor with various Lewis acidic molten salts, which is a simple, safe, low‐destructive, and general strategy. The heterostructures present superior electrochemical performance as anode materials for sodium‐ion batteries derived from the interfacial electronic coupling effect. The MXene‐based heterostructures have recently attracted great interest as anode materials for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Nonetheless, the complicated and harsh preparation process impedes their further commercialization. Herein, a novel, safe, low‐destructive, and universal strategy for rationally fabricating Ti3C2Tx MXene/transition metal sulfides (MSy) heterostructures is presented via Lewis acidic molten salts etching and subsequent in situ sulfurization treatment. Benefiting from the interfacial electronic coupling between highly conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene (Tx = O and Cl) and MSy (M = Fe, Co and Ni), the heterostructures possess remarkably improved electronic conductivity, promoted Na+ migration kinetics, and robust architectures. As a proof‐of‐concept demonstration, the Ti3C2Tx/FeS2 heterostructure demonstrates outstanding rate performance (456.6 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1) and long‐term cyclic stability (474.9 mAh g−1 after 600 cycles at 5 A g−1) when serving as SIB anodes. Impressively, a sodium‐ion full battery with Ti3C2Tx/FeS2 anode delivers an excellent reversible capacity of 431.6 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 3 A g−1. Moreover, the dual sodium storage behavior of Ti3C2Tx/FeS2 heterostructure and underlying mechanism toward exceptional electrochemical performance are revealed by comprehensive characterizations and theoretical calculations. Based on the full utilization of molten salt etching products, the present work offers new insight into the fabrication of MXene‐based heterostructures.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)/electrolyte interface is critical in determining the lithium (Li) plating/stripping behavior. The solvation structure of Li-ion is well understood in the bulk electrolyte. Still, the mechanism of how SEI components affect the Li-ion solvation structure and desolvation energy barrier at the SEI/electrolyte interface is still unclear. Herein, Ti 3 C 2 MXene with single halogenated terminations (−Cl, −Br, −I) are synthesized and used as a model system, because their surface terminations induce a double halide-rich SEI formation (LiF and LiCl/LiBr/LiI). We examine the influence of the interaction strength between different Li halides and Li-ion on coordination number of Li ions and distribution of Li ions within the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP). A solvation sheath with a low solvent coordination number forms near the IHP of the LiBr interphase, improving the kinetics of Li deposition. Accordingly, half-cells utilising Li-carbon fiber/Ti 3 C 2 Br 2 electrodes exhibit a long lifespan of 12000 h (1 mA cm −2 , 1 mAh cm −2 ). A pouch cell comprising Li-carbon fiber/Ti 3 C 2 Br 2 anode and LiFePO 4 cathode displays a capacity retention rate of 97% after 300 cycles even at a low negative to positive electrode capacity ratio of 2.26. Our research provides crucial principles for the design of SEI components in Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Lewis acidic molten salt method is a promising synthesis strategy for achieving MXenes with controllable surface termination from numerous MAX materials. Understanding the phase evolution chemistry during etching and post processing is highly desirable but remains a key challenge due to the lack of suitable in-situ characterizations and the complexity of the reaction process. Herein, we introduce an operando synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SRXRD) technique to unveil the phase evolution process of Nb2GaC MAX under a molten-salt ambient, proposing a controllable synthesis to achieve optimal etching through precise temperature and time adjustment. Subsequently, the phase structure of Nb2CTx MXenes is successfully tailored from hexagonal to amorphous by time-dependent persulfate oxidation. The resulting amorphous Nb2CTx with a well-patterned morphology and numerous chloride terminations exhibits highly improved specific capacity, rate capability, and long cycling for Li+ storage with a Cl-containing surface protective film. Addressing the time-related phase evolution during the entire molten salt strategy provides new insights into achieving higher efficiency and controllability in preparing MXenes and shows great potential in high-performance energy storage systems based on MXenes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional carbides and nitrides of transition metals, known as MXenes, are a fast-growing family of 2D materials that draw attention as energy storage materials. So far, MXenes are mainly prepared from Al-containing MAX phases (where A = Al) by Al dissolution in F-containing solution, but most other MAX phases have not been explored. Here, a redox-controlled A-site-etching of MAX phases in Lewis acidic melts is proposed and validated by the synthesis of various MXenes from unconventional MAX phase precursors with A elements Si, Zn, and Ga. A negative electrode of Ti3C2 MXene material obtained through this molten salt synthesis method delivers a Li+ storage capacity up to 738 C g-1 (205 mAh g-1) with high-rate performance and pseudocapacitive-like electrochemical signature in 1M LiPF6 carbonate-based electrolyte. MXene prepared from this molten salt synthesis route offer opportunities as high-rate negative electrode material for electrochemical energy storage applications.

Abstract:This study investigates an innovative approach for designing novel materials with excellent non‐lithium storage properties. Using anhydrous cuprous iodide molten salt as an etchant, we treated the MAX phase to create a 3D MXene-based composite, 3D MXene-I-Cu, with iodine functional groups. This was then converted in situ to 3D MXene-I-Cu 2 Se through selenization. Characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of 3D MXene-I-Cu 2 Se. This material demonstrated impressive electrochemical performance as an anode in sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries, and as a cathode in aluminum-ion batteries, showing high specific capacity, excellent multiplication capability, and outstanding cycling stability. Comprehensive tests revealed that the unique 3D structure facilitates rapid ion diffusion and efficient electron transport, while modified functional groups enhance structural stability and active site exposure. Additionally, we examined the impact of different electrochemical systems on the energy storage and sodium storage mechanism of 3D MXene-I-Cu 2 Se.

A simple, efficient, fluorine‐free synthesis method of MXene/Ti3C2Tx anode through molten salt etching for sodium‐ion batteries

Abstract:By employing CuCl2 as a molten salt etching agent, MXene is synthesized using a straightforward, efficient, low‐toxicity, and fluorine‐free method. Notably, there is a minimal disparity in electrochemical performance when compared to the traditional F‐containing etching approach. MXenes are mentioned in many applications due to their unique properties. However, the traditional etching method has a lengthy synthesis time, dangerous process, and high cost. Molten salt etching is not only short in time but also safe and simple, laying a good foundation for industrialization. Here, we compare the traditional F‐containing etching method with the molten salt etching method. Transmission electron microscopy elemental mapping images and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the Ti3C2Tx surface end of traditional etching is terminated by –F, while the Ti3C2Tx surface end of molten salt etching is terminated by –Cl. Finally, the sodium‐ion batteries are fabricated and the performance difference of the three etching methods is compared. The results show that the capacity of 102.1 mAh g–1 can still be reached when the molten salt etching MXene material returns to 0.1 A g–1 after the current density of 5 A g–1. After 500 cycles at 1 A g–1, there is no significant loss of capacity and the Coulomb efficiency is close to 100%. This work describes that molten salt etching MXene has comparable sodium storage capacity to conventional F‐containing etched MXene, making it a potential candidate for the production of large‐scale sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, we report a simple electrochemical method to exfoliate the Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase and also investigate the Al 3+ ion storage phenomenon in aqueous electrolyte. The exfoliation process avoids the harmful Hydrofluoric acid, which is often used for the processing of MXenes. It is demonstrated that exfoliation could be achieved when a hybrid aqueous electrolyte was utilized for the electrochemical treatment of Ti 3 AlC 2 . Additionally, porous surface structure could also be noticed. The electrolyte is an aqueous mixture of 1 M AlCl 3 and 5 M NaOH (1:10 v/v). The exfoliation was evidenced by electron microscopy images, XRD patterns and Raman spectra. The Al 3+ ion storage behaviour is also demonstrated in the exfoliated MAX phase. It was revealed that kinetics is governed by a diffusion-controlled process.

Abstract:A one‐pot molten salt electrochemical etching (E) method is proposed to achieve Ti2C MXene directly from elemental substances (Ti, Al, and C), which greatly simplifies the preparation process. By using carbon sources with different morphologies, such as carbon nanotubes and reduced graphene oxide, MAX and MXene with tuned morphology are prepared based on the "carbon‐template‐growth" mechanism. MXenes, a rapidly growing family of 2D transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides, are one of the most promising high‐rate electrode materials for energy storage. Despite the significant progress achieved, the MXene synthesis process is still burdensome, involving several procedures including preparation of MAX, etching of MAX to MXene, and delamination. Here, a one‐pot molten salt electrochemical etching (E) method is proposed to achieve Ti2C MXene directly from elemental substances (Ti, Al, and C), which greatly simplifies the preparation process. In this work, different carbon sources, such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), are reacted with Ti and Al micro‐powders to prepare Ti2AlC MAX with 1D and 2D tuned morphology followed by in situ electrochemical etching from Ti2AlC MAX to Ti2CTx MXene in low‐cost LiCl‐KCl. The introduction of the O surface group via further ammonium persulfate (APS) treatment can act in concert with Cl termination to activate the pseudocapacitive redox reaction of Ti2CClyOz in the non‐aqueous electrolyte, resulting in a Li+ storage capacity of up to 857 C g−1 (240 mAh g−1) with a high rate (86 mAh g−1 at 120 C) capability, which makes it promising for use as an anode material for fast‐charging batteries or hybrid devices in a non‐aqueous energy storage application.

Abstract:The surface and interface chemistry are of significance on controlling the properties of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes). Numerous efforts have been devoted to the regulation of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, however, tuning interlayer spacing and surface halogen termination of other MXenes (besides Ti 3 C 2 T x ) is rarely reported while demanded. Here we propose a Lewis-basic halides treatment, which is capable of simultaneously engineering the interlayer spacing and surface termination of various MXenes. Benefited from the abundant desolvated halogen anions and cations in molten state Lewis-basic halides, the -F termination was substituted by nucleophilic reaction and the interlayer spacing was enlarged. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene treated by this method showed a high specific capacity of 229 mAh g −1 for Li + storage, which is almost 2 times higher than pristine one. Considering the universality, our method provides an approach to regulating the properties of MXenes, which may expand their potential applications in energy storage, optoelectronics and beyond.

Abstract:Lithium-rich silicides (Li15Si4), formed during the electrochemical lithiation of silicon, show high reactivity with electrolyte components that contribute to capacity decay, formal lithium loss, and low coulombic efficiency. Recently, the reactivity of lithium silicides was found to be suppressed by substituting a multivalent cation (i.e. Mg, Ca) for lithium that results in the room-temperature formation of a ternary Li-M-Si phase. In this study, we explored a range of multivalent electrolyte salt additives (M=Ni, Cu, La, Ce, Sr, Ba, and Ca-Mg mixed salt) in a lithium-ion cell configuration and identified a room-temperature electrochemical route to the formation of new ternary and quaternary lithium silicides. Using this method, both nickel and copper salts were found to plate onto the silicon electrode surface upon lithiation. Based on refined synchrotron X-ray diffraction data, multivalent cations with an ionic radius similar to Na (~1.03 Å) or smaller can be inserted electrochemically into a formally cation-deficient Li15Si4 host lattice to form new ternary (or quartenary) phases. The electrochemical synthesis of a new quaternary Li-M-M'-Si phase represents a facile route to preparing and scaling materials isostructural to the Heusler and electron-precise Li14MgSi4 phase that results in enhanced cycling and calendar life performance.

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx MXene has attracted remarkable attention due to its promising applications in energy storage and sensors. However, traditional MXene preparation methods used HF as etchant, which was highly toxic and harmful to human and environment. Moreover, the aqueous etchants will also result in the combination of OH, O and F groups on the surfaces, making it difficult to control the varieties and contents of the surface terminations. In this paper, a green and mild electrochemical exfoliation method was proposed to synthesize Ti3C2Fx and synchronously control its fluorination degree on the surface. A non-aqueous ionic liquid, [BMIM][PF6]-based solution was used as electrolyte. The as-prepared Ti3C2Fx was fluorinated with the CF and TiF3 groups, which were electrochemically active and contributed to the excellent cycling stability of the MXene anode-based Li-ion batteries. These findings provided a facile strategy to prepare MXene materials and dope MXene with tailored property for MXene-based energy devices applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal carbide and nitride materials (MXenes) with controlled Cl- and O-surface terminations (MS-Ti3C2T x ) were prepared by a molten salt etching route and their electrochemical properties were investigated in nitrile-based electrolytes. The results show that the power performance of MS-Ti3C2T x was greatly improved in acetonitrile (ACN)-based non-aqueous organic electrolytes, which are conventional electrolytes for electrochemical capacitors. The addition of a lithium salt to produce 2 M LiTFSI in ACN results in an increase in the specific capacitance. Moreover, replacing LiTFSI by LiFSI drastically improves the power performance of MXenes at a high scan rate (95 mAh g−1 at 900C). These results highlight the importance of properly matching the electrolyte composition to the electrode material and shed light on MXenes as high-rate electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Ion intercalation is crucial for improving energy storage performance, but controlling the content of intercalated ions is challenging for two-dimensional (2D) electrode materials although it enables clarifying individual intercalation behaviors and thereof pinpointing the intercalation mechanism. Herein, the equal‐content alkali metal ions were successfully manipulated to intercalate into Mo 2 CT x MXene electrodes via an electrochemistry‐driven approach via the anti‐battery principle. Based on a variety of alkali metal ions pre‐intercalation into the Mo 2 CT x MXene (M + ‐Mo 2 CT x ) electrodes, the lithium storage performance was largely improved. Li + ‐Mo 2 CT x electrode exhibits an outstanding capacity of 395.49 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 100 cycles due to the enhanced redox activity induced by high-valence Mo and low-F interlayer exposed surface. Besides, the K + ‐Mo 2 CT x electrode delivers excellent rate performance due to faster ion transfer kinetics originating from the pillaring effect of pre-intercalated K + ions. In a broader sense, our study opens up a new route to accurately improve the electrochemical performance via precisely tuning the content of ions intercalated into 2D intercalation‐type materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials, Ti3C2Tx MXene, have great potential for rapidly and stabilized sodium storage because of their excellent electrical conductivity and rich redox active sites. However, affected by the interaction of hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces, Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets are prone to collapse and re-stacking, which is not conducive to the ions diffusion and electrons transport, affects the electrochemical performance. Herein, we prepared 3D wrinkled Ti3C2Tx MXene architectures with alkali ions (Na+, K+, Li+) pre-intercalation by continuous stirring treatment of Ti3C2Tx MXene in aqueous borohydride (NaBH4, KBH4, LiBH4) solution for sodium storage. This structure effectively enlarges the interlayer distance of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets and shortens the sodium ion diffusion path. Benefitting from the superiority of the structure, Na+ pre-intercalated Ti3C2Tx MXene has the most excellent sodium storage performance, high reversible capacity of 256 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles, and amazing long-cycle stability of 168 mA h g−1 at 2000 mA g−1 after 6000 cycles. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that the Ti3C2Tx MXene pre-intercalating with Na+ significantly reduces the diffusion energy barrier, greatly improves the embedding and diffusion kinetics of Na+. This novel three-dimensional wrinkled Ti3C2Tx MXene structure with alkali ions pre-intercalated can better broaden the application prospects of MXene-based materials in energy storage fields.

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx (MXene) is widely acknowledged as an excellent substrate for constructing heterogeneous structures with transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) for boosting the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion storage. However, conventional synthesis strategies inevitably lead to poor electrochemical charge transfer due to Ti3C2Tx-derived TiO2 at the heterogeneous interface between Ti3C2Tx and TMCs. Here, an innovative in situ selenization strategy is proposed to replace the originally generated TiO2 on Ti3C2Tx with metallic TiSe2 interphase, clearing the bottleneck of slow charge transfer barrier caused by MXene oxidation. The construction of bimetallic selenide formed by CoSe2 and TiSe2 generates intrinsic electric fields to guide the fast ion diffusion kinetics in a heterogeneous interface. Additionally, the CoSe2/TiSe2/Ti3C2Tx heterogeneous structure with enhanced structural stability and improved rate performance is confirmed by both experiments and theoretical calculations. The engineered heterogeneous structure exhibits an ultra-high pseudocapacitance contribution (73.1% at 0.1 mV s-1), rendering it well-suited to offset the kinetics differences between double-layer materials. The assembled lithium-ion capacitor based on CoSe2/TiSe2/Ti3C2Tx possesses a high energy density and an ultralong life span (89.5% after 10 000 times at 2 A g-1). This devised strategy provides a feasible solution for utilizing the performance advantages of MXene substrates in lithium storage with ultrafast charge transfer kinetics.

Abstract:Layered chalcogenides play significant roles in electrochemical energy storage. However, their application potential is restricted by sluggish charge transfer and storage kinetics. Herein, a dual-defect strategy involving Ti intercalation and Se vacancies (SVs) is proposed to modulate the electronic structure of MoSe2 and enhance the electrochemical performance of aluminum batteries (ABs). The dense atomic orbitals of Ti and Mo in Ti-MoSe2-x contribute numerous electron states near the Fermi level, effectively filling the wide bandgap. This fundamentally activates the intrinsic electronic properties, elevating the charge-transfer ability. Moreover, the synchronous optimization of planar and interlayer structures endows the Ti-MoSe2-x with ample active sites and expanded layer spacing, enhancing ion migration and electrochemical capacity. The significant charge interaction between Ti-MoSe2-x and active electrolyte ions promotes the affinity and storage ability of cathodes for charge carriers. Owing to these merits, the Ti-MoSe2-x cathode exhibits enhanced reversible capacity (250 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) and superior cycling stability (132 mA h g-1 over 2400 cycles at 5.0 A g-1) with fast reaction kinetics. This research offers in-depth insights into the electrochemical energy storage for ABs by modulating the electronic and lattice structures of layered chalcogenides. Dual-defect strategy of Ti-intercalation and Se-vacancies modulates the electronic and structural properties of MoSe2, achieving high-performance aluminum batteries.
