Abstract:This article reports results of studies on the effects of pH, temperature, particulate matter, organic matter, and ions on the phage MS2 inactivation in pure water and actual water samples. Organic matter and pH as well as the presence of Br- and I- ions strongly affected the ozone inactivation of MS2, whereas temperature and particulate matter had minimal effects. Moreover, the nitrogen from ammonia had a negligible effect on ozone inactivation. The delayed Chick-Watson model provided the most suitable description of MS2 inactivation by ozone. The equation of the inactivation rate was also obtained, which was well correlated with the measured results.

Abstract:Secondary effluent from WWTPS still contains a large number of microorganisms, therefore, disinfection is essential. There are many disadvantages in using traditional disinfection methods, so the combination of disinfection techniques is a new research direction. Ozone combined with ultrasound is one of them. In this experiment, the inactivation of the total coli forms, color removal and UV254 removal of secondary effluent by a combination of ultrasonic (frequency20 kHz; power100W) and ozone disinfection was investigated. The results show that the effect of the synergistic action of 30s US and ozone disinfection is superior to the effect of individual ozone disinfection. After 15min synergistic disinfection, the total coli forms inactivation rate is up to 99.9%, simultaneously color removal rate to 80% and UV254 removal rate to 52%. Compared with individual ozone disinfection, reaction time was reduced by 5 min.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based photocatalysis is a promising alternative approach for wastewater disinfection. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is sensitive and efficient for bacterial inactivation. This study developed a 1 O 2 -predominated PMS disinfection technique under visible light with CuS quantum dots (QDs) modified MIL-101(Fe) (). CuS QDs modification greatly enhanced the 1 O 2 quantum yield by 80% than that of MIL-101(Fe). Photoelectricity and photoluminescence tests demonstrated that both the enhanced electron transfer and energy transfer were responsible for improved 1 O 2 generation in Vis/PMS/ system. The system took 60 min to inactivate 7.5-log E. coli , and it could be applied in a broad pH and dissolve oxygen range. Bacterial inactivation mechanism suggested that 1 O 2 attacked cell membrane first, then induced oxidative stress, up-regulated intracellular ROS level, eventually broke DNA strand. The system showed good disinfection performance on Gram-positive B. subtilis and fecal coliforms in practical wastewater, implying it is a promising alternative disinfection technology for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This study examined the antimicrobial efficacy of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) against bacteria, using Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a model organism. Our investigation delineates the complex mechanisms exerted by unactivated PMS. Thus, an initial redox reaction between PMS and the target biomolecules of bacteria generates SO4•- as the pivotal reactive species for bacterial inactivation; to a lesser extent, •OH, 1O2, or O2•- may also participate. Damage generated during oxidation was identified using an array of biochemical techniques. Specifically, redox processes are promoted by PMS and SO4•- targets and disrupt various components of bacterial cells, predominantly causing extracellular damage as well as intracellular lesions. Among these, external events are the key to cell death. Finally, by employing gene knockout mutants, we uncovered the role of specific gene responses in the intracellular damage induced by radical pathways. The findings of this study not only expand the understanding of PMS-mediated bacterial inactivation but also explain the ten-fold higher effectiveness of PMS than that reported for H2O2. Hence, we provide clear evidence that unactivated PMS solutions generate SO4•- in the presence of bacteria, and consequently, should be considered an effective disinfection method.

Abstract:Water serves as a critical vector for the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms, playing a pivotal role in the emergence and propagation of numerous diseases. Ozone (O 3 ) disinfection technology offers promising potential for mitigating the spread of these pathogens in aquatic environments. However, previous studies have only focused on the inactivated effect of O 3 on a single pathogenic microorganism, lacking a comprehensive comparative analysis of various influencing factors and different types of pathogens, while the cost-effectiveness of O 3 technology has not been mentioned. This review synthesized the migration characteristics of various pathogenic microorganisms in water bodies and examined the properties, mechanisms, and influencing factors of O 3 inactivation. It evaluated the efficacy of O 3 against diverse pathogens, namely bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi, and provided a comparative analysis of their sensitivities to O 3 . The formation and impact of harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the O 3 inactivation process were assessed, alongside an analysis of the cost-effectiveness of this method. Additionally, potential synergistic treatment processes involving O 3 were proposed. Based on these findings, recommendations were made for optimizing the utilization of O 3 in water inactivation in order to formulate better inactivation strategies in the post-pandemic eras.

Abstract:Post-treatment of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is not efficient in eliminating toxicity of chlorinated water. Removal of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and toxicity of chlorinated water by UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/ H2O2 ) and UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) was investigated. In the absence of bromide, adding H2O2 or PMS enhanced the removal of nitrogenous DBPs and total organic chlorine (TOCl) than UV alone (1200 mJ/cm(2)). UV/ PMS decreased the cytotoxicity from 10.6 to 4.4 mg-Phenol/L and genotoxicity from 7.1 to 2.0 mu g-4-NQO/L, more efficient than UV/H2O2. However, results were quite different in the presence of bromide. PMS led to the increased formation of total organic bromine (TOBr) in chlorinated water. UV/PMS was therefore less efficient in toxicity removal than UV/H2O2 . In the presence of bromide, UV/H2O2 decreased the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 85% and 68%, while UV/PMS only removed the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 59% and 46%. In the UV/PMS process, SO4'- was more efficient on toxicity removal than 'OH. Contributions of UV irradiation, 'OH and SO4'- were 55%, 14% and 31% to cytotoxicity removal, and 49%, 15% and 36% to genotoxicity removal. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using UV/H2O2 and UV/PMS as post-treatments to enhance the removal of DBPs and toxicity of chlorinated water.

Abstract:The inactivation of bacteriophage MS2 by sodium hypochlorite was investigated to understand the effect of solution chemistry on the disinfection efficacy in the presence of particles. Kaolinite and Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) were used as the models of inorganic and organic particles to simulate high turbidity and algal cells, respectively, in drinking water sources. In both particle-containing solutions, lower pH, the presence of cations (di-valent Ca2+) and natural organic matters (NOM) were regarded as the main factors to influence the aggregation and inactivation of MS2. The results showed that MS2 aggregated in all solutions at pH 3.0, protecting the inner viruses. At pH 7.0, the presence of Na+ cations (0-200 mmol/L) did not affect the inactivation efficacy of MS2, which always followed the order of particles-free ≈ kaolinite > M. aeruginosa. The inactivation efficacy of MS2 in the presence of Ca2+ cations followed the order of kaolinite > particles-free > M. aeruginosa at 0-50 mmol/L Ca2+ cations, while the inactivation efficacy remained almost constant in the range of 100-200 mmol/L Ca2+ cations. By contrast, kaolinite offered not enough protection to adsorbed MS2, but MS2 aggregation decreased disinfection efficacy at a high concentration of Ca2+ cations. Moreover, the presence of humic acid as NOM decreased the inactivation of MS2 more significantly than M. aeruginosa due to the more consumption of free chlorine from humic acids. Therefore, the co-existence of NOM and di-valent Ca2+ cations are potential challenges for the inactivation of viruses by sodium hypochlorite in safe drinking water.

Abstract:Aqueous solutions of MnCl 2 ·4H 2 O and Tiron (disodium 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonate) rapidly remove dioxygen (O 2 ) from aqueous solution at a rate of ~20 mg∙ L -1 min -1 with turnover frequencies (TOFs) of up to 440,000 h –1 in the pH range 7.50 – 11.0 and at 20 – 50 °C using hydroxylamine (NH 2 OH) as reducing substrate. These solutions remain deoxygenated for several hours despite being open to the atmosphere. During this time there is a steady rise in the concentration of in situ generated hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), reaching ~12 mM after 17 h. The order of selectivity for selected 1st row transition metals was found to be: Mn(II) >> Co(II) ~ Cu(II) ~ Fe(II). No deuterium isotope effect was observed, which suggests that an electron transfer is the rate determining step. A mechanism is proposed that involves two 1-electron transfers from bound NH 2 OH to bound O 2 to produce H 2 O 2 concomitant with two proton transfers from catecholate oxygen atoms. This system can act as an anti-corrosion formulation as the catalytic reduction of O 2 results in the removal of O 2 from open aqueous solutions and the in situ generated H 2 O 2 can be used as a biocide e.g. to kill L. pneumophila. Batch experiments were carried out to confirm the feasibility of this system to simultaneously inhibit corrosion and also potentially disinfect heating and cooling water systems.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate(PMS)-based advanced oxidation process have been recognized as efficient disinfection processes. This study comprehensively investigated the role of sulfate radical (SO4•-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH)-driven disinfection of bacteria and fungal spores by the PMS/metals ions (Me(II)) systems and modeled the CT value based on the relationship between survival and ∫[Radical]dt, with the aim to provide an accurate and quantitative kinetic data of inactivation processes. The results indicated that •OH played a more central role than SO4•- in the inactivation process, and bacteria were more vulnerable to radical attack than fungal spores due to the differences in antioxidant mechanisms and external structures. The k value of •OH -induced inactivation of E. coli was approximately 3-fold higher than that of A. niger, and the shoulder length of •OH -induced inactivation of E. coli was closely 52-fold shorter than that of A. niger after treated with the PMS/Co(II) system. The morphological and biochemical changes revealed that PMS/Me(II) treatment caused membrane damage, intracellular ROS accumulation and esterase activity loss in microorganisms. This study significantly improved the understanding of the contribution of radicals in the process of microbial inactivation by PMS/Me(II) and would provide important implications for the further development of technologies to cope with the highly resistant fungal spores in drinking water.
Synergistic Effects of Ozone/peroxymonosulfate for Isothiazolinone Biocides Degradation: Kinetics, Synergistic Performance and Influencing Factors.

Abstract:Synergistic effects of ozone (O3) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS, HSO5xe213; ) for isothiazolinone biocides degradation was studied. The synergistic ozonation process (O3/PMS) increased the efficiency of methyl-isothiazolinone (MIT) and chloro-methyl-isothiazolinone (CMIT) degradation to 91.0% and 81.8%, respectively, within 90 s at pH 7.0. This is 30.6% and 62.5% higher than the corresponding ozonation efficiency, respectively. Total radical formation value (Rct,center dot R) for the O3/PMS process was 24.6 times that of ozonation alone. Calculated second-order rate constants for the reactions between isothiazolinone biocides and xfffc; (kSO4 center dot-,MIT and kSO4 center dot-,CMIT) were 8.15 x 109 and 4.49 x 109 Mxe213; 1 sxe213; 1, respectively. Relative contributions of O3, hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) and oxidation to MIT and CMIT removal were estimated, which were 15%, 45%, and 40% for O3, center dot OH and oxidation to MIT, and 1%, 67%, and 32% for O3, center dot OH and xfffc; oxidation to CMIT at pH 7.0, respectively. Factors influencing the O3/PMS process, namely the solution pH, chloride ions (Clxe213; ), and bicarbonate (HCO3xe213; ), were evaluated. Increasing the solution pH markedly accelerated O3 decay and center dot OH and xfffc; formation, thus weakening the relative contribution of O3 oxidation while enhancing that of center dot OH and xfffc; . Clxe213; had a negligible effect on MIT and CMIT degradation. Under the dual effect of bicarbonate (HCO3xe213; ) as inhibitor and promoter, low concentrations (1-2 mM) of bicarbonate weakly promoted MIT and CMIT degradation, while high concentrations (10-20 mM) induced strong inhibition. Lastly, oxidation performance of O3 and O3/PMS processes for MIT and CMIT degradation in different water matrices was compared.

Abstract:In this study, airborne MS2 bacteriophages were exposed for subsecond time intervals to atmospheric-pressure cold plasma (APCP) produced using different power levels (20, 24, and 28 W) and gas carriers (ambient air, Ar-O2 [2%, vol/vol], and He-O2 [2%, vol/vol]). In addition, waterborne MS2 viruses were directly subjected to the APCP treatment for up to 3 min. MS2 viruses with and without the APCP exposure were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR), and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Viral inactivation was shown to exhibit linear relationships with the APCP generation power and exposure time (R(2) > 0.95 for all energy levels tested) up to 95% inactivation (1.3-log reduction) after a subsecond airborne exposure at 28 W; about the same inactivation level was achieved for waterborne viruses with an exposure time of less than 1 min. A larger amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as atomic oxygen, in APCP was detected for a higher generation power with Ar-O2 and He-O2 gas carriers. SEM images, SDS-PAGE, and agarose gel analysis of exposed waterborne viruses showed various levels of damage to both surface proteins and their related RNA genes after the APCP exposure, thus leading to the loss of their viability and infectivity.

Abstract:The goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) for microbiocidal and virucidal inactivation. The viruses chosen for this study were bacteriophage MS2, T4, and T7. In addition, Bacillus subtilis spores and Escherichia coli were studied. By using H(2)O(2) in the presence of filtered ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (UV/H(2)O(2)) to generate wavelengths above 295nm, the direct UV photolysis disinfection mechanism was minimized, while disinfection by H(2)O(2) was also negligible. Virus T4 and E. coli in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) were sensitive to >295nm filtered UV irradiation (without H(2)O(2)), while MS2 was very resistant. Addition of H(2)O(2) at 25mg/l in the presence of filtered UV irradiation over a 15min reaction time did not result in any additional disinfection of virus T4, while an additional one log inactivation for T7 and 2.5 logs for MS2 were obtained. With E. coli, only a slight additional effect was observed when H(2)O(2) was added. B. subtilis spores did not show any inactivation at any of the conditions used in this study. The OH radical exposure (CT value) was calculated to present the relationship between the hydroxyl radical dose and microbial inactivation.

Abstract:A type reactor with on-line O3 was used to do further research of the disinfection of total bacteria, E. coli and degradation of 2,4-DCP. The result was obtained in the following conditions. Only UV-radiation, O3 applied by other machine and by the reactor itself, and other conditions were changed to study the disinfection and degradation. The result showed the satisfied effect of disinfection and degradation would be achieved by using UV/O3 applied outside and when the flow rate was about 400 L.h-1, on-line O3 could be produced and make high efforts to enhance disinfection and degradation. The method of UV/O3 was a promising technology in the treatment of drinking water.

Abstract:Microwave discharge electrodeless lamp (MDEL) is a novel ultraviolet (UV) light source. Synergistic disinfection using UV light emitted by MDEL (MWUV) coupled with ozone (O 3 ) at an ultra-low dose was investigated. Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis were deactivated more effectively by MWUV/O 3 than by either MWUV or O 3 alone. MWUV/O 3 treatment using an O 3 concentration of 0.4 mg/L gave an E. coli inactivation rate of 5.52 log. The photoreactivation degree and rate of E. coli were lower after inactivation by MWUV/O 3 treatment than after MWUV treatment alone. The maximum photoreactivation rates after the MWUV/O 3 and MWUV treatments were 2.90% and 16.08%, respectively. MWUV/O 3 disinfection also inhibited dark resurrection of E. coli and gave a maximum dark resurrection rate of 0.0036%. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated that more hydroxyl radicals were generated during MWUV/O 3 treatment. Scanning electron microscopy and laser confocal scanning microscopy observations indicated that O 3 played a key role in breaking down the cell structure. MWUV/O 3 treatment gave a good disinfection effect on fecal coliform bacteria in actual domestic wastewater. The results indicated that inactivation of bacteria can be more effectively achieved by MWUV treatment with O 3 .

Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the durability of various pre-magnetization methods in enhancing the removal efficiency of different pollutants will significantly impact the widespread utilization of Pre-ZVI in practical engineering. Herein, we investigated the efficiency of dry and wet Pre-ZVI-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in eliminating oxytetracycline (OTC) and evaluated the durability of Pre-ZVI. Additionally, we examined several factors that influence the degradation process's efficiency. Our results found that the reaction constant k values corresponding to the dry Pre-ZVI/PMS system at the pH values of 3, 7, and 9 varied from approximately 0.0384, 0.0331, and 0.0349 (day 1) to roughly 0.0297, 0.0278, and 0.0314 (day 30), respectively. Meanwhile, the wet Pre-ZVI/PMS system exhibited k values ranging from approximately 0.0392, 0.0349, and 0.0374 (day 1) to roughly 0.0380, 0.0291, and 0.0322 (day 30), respectively. Moreover, we proposed four OTC degradation pathways using LC-MS/MS and density functional theory calculations. The toxicity of the degradation products was assessed using the ecological structure activity relationship and the toxicity estimation software tool . Overall, this study provides insights into the application of Pre-ZVI/PMS that can be selectively used to eliminate tetracycline antibiotics from water.

Moderate Pre-Ozonation Coupled with a Post-Peroxone Process Remove Filamentous Cyanobacteria and 2-MIB Efficiently: from Bench to Pilot-Scale Study.

Abstract:The increasing frequency and intensity of taste- and odour-producing cyanobacteria in water sources is a growing global issue. Odour events caused by 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) mainly arising from filamentous cyanobacteria have been a very common problem in water supply. Removal rates of filamentous cyanobacteria and 2-MIB by conventional water treatment, such as coagulation, and disinfection treatment processes is low. Hence, a moderate pre-ozonation of cyanobacteria (with little cell damage) was proposed in this study as an enhanced coagulation step to remove filamentous cyanobacteria and intracellular 2-MIB effectively, while avoiding the release of intracellular 2-MIB. A post-peroxone (O-3/H2O2) process was applied after sand filtration to degrade the residual dissolved 2-MIB. Results show that moderate pre-ozonation (0.2 mg/L O-3 oxidation for 20 min) can substantially enhance the coagulation efficiency for algae, with low cell lysis and high cell viability. Furthermore, 2.0 mg/L O-3 combined with 2.0 mg/L H2O2 can degrade the residual dissolved 2-MIB nearly 100% after 20 min reaction. Based on the optimal dosages, a 0.6 m(3)/h pilot system, including pre-ozonation, coagulation and sedimentation, sand filtration, and post-peroxone processes, was continuously run for 14 days, and it was found that the proposed process can effectively and stably remove filamentous cyanobacteria and 2-MIB.
Comparison of UV/H2O2, UV/PMS, and UV/PDS in Destruction of Different Reactivity Compounds and Formation of Bromate and Chlorate

Abstract:In this study, we compared the decontamination kinetics of various target compounds and the oxidation by-products (bromate and chlorate) of PMS, PDS, and H2O2 under UV irradiation (UV/PMS, UV/PDS, UV/H2O2). Probes of different reactivity with hydroxyl and sulfate radicals, such as benzoic acid (BA), nitrobenzene (NB), and trichloromethane (TCM), were selected to compare the decontamination efficiency of the three oxidation systems. Experiments were performed under acidic, neutral, and alkaline pH conditions to obtain a full-scale comparison of UV/peroxides. Furthermore, the decontamination efficiency was also compared in the presence of common radical scavengers in water bodies [bicarbonate, carbonate, and natural organic matter (NOM)]. Finally, the formation of oxidation by-products, bromate, and chlorate, was also monitored in comparison in pure water and tap water. Results showed that UV/H2O2 showed higher decontamination efficiency than UV/PDS and UV/PMS for BA degradation while UV/H2O2 and UV/PMS showed better decontamination performance than UV/PDS for NB degradation under acidic and neutral conditions. UV/PMS was the most efficient among the three processes for BA and NB degradation under alkaline conditions, while UV/PDS was the most efficient for TCM degradation under all pH conditions. In pure water, both bromate and chlorate were formed in UV/PDS, small amounts of bromate and rare chlorate were observed in UV/PMS, and no detectable bromate and chlorate were formed in UV/H2O2. In tap water, no bromate and chlorate were detectable for all three systems.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is a promising alternative for drinking water disinfection; also many organic micropollutants may be present in drinking water sources nowadays. However, pipe corrosion products (PCPs) may impact the reactions between a disinfectant and organic micropollutants in water distribution systems. This study investigated iopamidol (IPM) degradation by PMS under catalysis of two PCPs (i.e., CuO and delta-MnO2). The pseudo-first-order rate constant of IPM degradation in the CuO/PMS system (CuPS) was 3.7 times of that in the delta-MnO2/PMS system (MnPS), with values of 0.218 and 0.059 min(-1), respectively. Sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) was the major contributor to IPM degradation in the CuPS, while hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) also played an important role in the MnPS. The radical yield ratio was 0.89 and 0.69 mol/mol in the CuPS and MnPS, respectively. The IPM degradation rate increased with increasing PMS dose, and reached a maximum with a PCP dose of 1.0 and 1.5 g L-1 in the CuPS and MnPS, respectively. The highest degradation efficiency was achieved at pH 7.0 in the two systems. The water matrix (i.e., natural organic matter, alkalinity and chloride) had detrimental effects on IPM degradation to different degrees. The majority of the iodine released from IPM was oxidized to iodate (IO3-) and a small fraction of the initial total organic iodine was transformed to iodoform (CHI3). The IPM degradation by PMS mainly proceeded through two pathways: (1) amide hydrolysis of side chain A, amino oxidation, and amide hydrolysis of side chains B and B' in sequence; and (2) deiodination reactions.
