Abstract:This study examined the antimicrobial efficacy of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) against bacteria, using Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a model organism. Our investigation delineates the complex mechanisms exerted by unactivated PMS. Thus, an initial redox reaction between PMS and the target biomolecules of bacteria generates SO4•- as the pivotal reactive species for bacterial inactivation; to a lesser extent, •OH, 1O2, or O2•- may also participate. Damage generated during oxidation was identified using an array of biochemical techniques. Specifically, redox processes are promoted by PMS and SO4•- targets and disrupt various components of bacterial cells, predominantly causing extracellular damage as well as intracellular lesions. Among these, external events are the key to cell death. Finally, by employing gene knockout mutants, we uncovered the role of specific gene responses in the intracellular damage induced by radical pathways. The findings of this study not only expand the understanding of PMS-mediated bacterial inactivation but also explain the ten-fold higher effectiveness of PMS than that reported for H2O2. Hence, we provide clear evidence that unactivated PMS solutions generate SO4•- in the presence of bacteria, and consequently, should be considered an effective disinfection method.
Impact of metal ions on PMS/Cl- disinfection efficacy: Enhancing or impeding microbial inactivation?

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is an eco-friendly disinfectant gaining attention. This study examined the influence of metal ions (Co(II), Cu(II), Fe(II)) on PMS disinfection with chloride ions (Cl-) against waterborne microorganisms, encompassing both bacteria and fungal spores. The findings elucidated that metal ions augment the inactivation of bacteria in the PMS/Cl- system while concurrently impeding the inactivation of fungal spores. Specifically, the PMS/Co(II)/Cl- process increased E. coli inactivation rates by 2.25 and 2.75 times compared to PMS/Co(II) and PMS/Cl-, respectively. Conversely, PMS/Me(II)/Cl- generally exhibited a diminished inactivation capacity against the three fungal spores compared to PMS/Cl-, albeit surpassing the efficacy of PMS/Me(II). For instance, the inactivation levels of A. niger by PMS/Cl-, PMS/Cu(II)/Cl-, and PMS/Cu(II) are 4.47-log, 1.92-log, and 0.11-log, respectively. Notably, fungal spores demonstrated a substantially higher resistance to disinfectants compared to bacteria. Differences in microbial susceptibility were linked to cell wall structure, composition, antioxidant defenses, and reactive species generation, such as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO4•-), and reactive chlorine species (RCS). This study demonstrated the novel and unique phenomenon of metal ions' dual role in modulating the PMS/Cl- disinfection process, which has not been reported before and has important implications for the field of water treatment.
Nucleophilic hydrolysis of dichloroacetonitrile and trichloroacetonitrile disinfection byproducts by peroxymonosulfate: Kinetics and mechanisms

Abstract:In this work, it was found that peroxymonosulfate (PMS) could appreciably accelerate the transformation rates of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and trichloracetonitrile (TCAN) in aqueous solutions, especially under alkaline pHs. The impact of reactive oxygen species scavengers (methyl alcohol for sulfate radical, tert-butyl alcohol for hydroxyl radical, and azide for singlet oxygen) and water matrices (chloride (Cl-), bicarbonate (HCO3-), and natural organic matter (NOM)) on DCAN and TCAN transformation by PMS is evaluated, revealing negligible effects. A nucleophilic hydrolysis pathway, as opposed to an oxidation process, was proposed for the transformation of DCAN and TCAN by PMS, supported by the hydrolyzable characteristics of these compounds and validated through density functional theory calculations. Kinetic analysis indicated that the transformation of DCAN and TCAN by PMS adhered to a second-order kinetic law, with higher reaction rates observed at elevated pH levels within the range of 7.0-10.0. Kinetic modeling incorporating the hydrolytic contributions of water, hydroxyl ion, and protonated and deprotonated PMS (i.e., HSO5- and SO52-) effectively fitted the experimental data. Species-specific second-order rate constants reveal that SO52- exhibited significantly higher reactivity towards DCAN ((1.69 ± 0.22) × 104 M-1h-1) and TCAN ((6.06 ± 0.18) × 104 M-1h-1) compared to HSO5- ((2.14 ± 0.12) × 102 M-1h-1) for DCAN; and (1.378 ± 0.11) × 103 M-1h-1 for TCAN). Comparative analysis of DCAN and TCAN transformation efficiencies by four different oxidants indicated that PMS rivaled chlorine but falls short of hydrogen peroxide, with peroxydisulfate displaying negligible reactivity. Overall, this study uncovers the nucleophilic hydrolysis characteristics of PMS, supplementing its recognized role as an oxidant precursor or mild oxidant, and underscores its significant implications for environmental remediation.
Peroxysulfur species-mediated enhanced oxidation of micropollutants by ferrate(VI): Peroxymonosulfate versus peroxydisulfate

Abstract:Many studies have shown that Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) works synergistically with ferrate (Fe(VI)) to remove refractory organic compounds in a few minutes. However, little has been reported on the combined effects of peroxydisulfate (PDS) and Fe(VI). Since PDS is stable and cost effective, it is of practical significance to study the reaction mechanism and conditions of the PDS/Fe(VI) system. The results of the study indicate that the intermediate Fe(II) is formed during the decomposition of Fe(VI), which is then rapidly oxidized. Due to the asymmetry of the PMS molecular structure, PMS can rapidly trap Fe(II) (kPMS/Fe(II)= 3 × 104 M-1∙s-1), whereas PDS cannot (kPDS/Fe(II)= 26 M-1∙s-1). Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (HA) can reduce Fe(VI) and Fe(III) to Fe(II) to excite PDS to produce SO4•-. Acetate helps to detect Fe(II), but does not help PDS to trap Fe(II). Active species such as SO4•-, •OH, 1O2, and Fe(IV), Fe(V) are present in both systems, but in different amounts. In the PMS/Fe(Ⅵ) system, all these active species react with ibuprofen (IBP) and degrade IBP within several minutes. The effects of the initial pH, PMS or Fe(VI) dosage, and different amounts of IBP on the removal rate of IBP were investigated. According to the intermediates detected by the GC-MS, the degradation process of IBP includes hydroxylation, demethylation and single bond breakage. The degradation pathways of IBP were proposed. The degradation of IBP in tap water and Songhua River was also investigated. In actual water treatment, the dosage needs to be increased to achieve the same results. This study provides a basis and theoretical support for the application of PMS/Fe(Ⅵ) and PDS/Fe(VI) system in water treatment.
Enhanced coagulation and oxidation by the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate process: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:To improve the performance of the conventional coagulation process, a permanganate (Mn(VII)) pre-oxidation combined with Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) coagulation process (Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS) that can significantly improve the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), turbidity, and micropollutants is proposed in this study. Compared with conventional Fe(III) coagulation, the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process can also significantly enhance the removal of iohexol and sulfamethoxazole in raw water. During this process, the primary reduction product, Mn(IV), after Mn(VII) pre-oxidation was adsorbed on the floc surfaces and involved in the Fe(III)/PMS process. The natural organic matter (NOM) in raw water mediated the redox cycle of iron. The synergistic effect of NOM, Fe, and Mn facilitated the redox cycle of Mn(III)/Mn(IV) and Fe(III)/Fe(II) to promote the activation of PMS. The sulfate radical (SO4•-) played an important role in the degradation of micropollutants. The formation potential of the detected volatile disinfection by-product (DBP) during the subsequent chlorination was reduced by 21.9% after the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process. This study demonstrated the promising application of the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process for coagulation and micropollutant control and illustrated the reaction mechanism. This study provides guidance for improving conventional drinking water treatment processes.

Abstract:Pathogens in drinking water remain a challenge for human health, photo-Fenton process is a promising technique for pathogen inactivation, herein, two common iron oxides, hematite and magnetite mediate persulfate (peroxymonosulfate-PMS - and peroxydisulfate-PDS) involved photo-Fenton-like processes were constructed for E. coli inactivation, and the inactivation performance was investigated and compared with the photo-Fenton process under a low intensity UVA irradiation. Results indicated that with a low dose of iron oxides (1 mg/L) and inorganic peroxides (10 mg/L), PMS-involved photo-Fenton-like process is the best substitute for the photo-Fenton one over pH range of 5–8. In addition, humic acid (HA, one of the important components of natural organic matter) incorporated iron oxide-mediated photo-Fenton-like processes for bacteria inactivation was also studied, and facilitating effect was found in UVA/hematite/PMS and UVA/magnetite/PDS systems. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) exploration experiments revealed that ·OH was the predominant radical in H 2 O 2 - and PDS-containing systems, whereas 1 O 2 was one of the principal reactive species in the PMS systems. In addition to the semiconductor photocatalysis of iron oxides and UVA-activated oxidants, iron-complexes (iron-oxidant complexes and iron-bacteria complexes) mediated ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) processes also made contribution to bacterial inactivation. Overall, this study demonstrates that it is feasible to replace H 2 O 2 with PMS in a photo-Fenton-like process for water disinfection using a low dose of reagents, mediated by cheap catalysts, such as hematite and magnetite, it is also hoped to provide some insights to practical water treatment.

Abstract:Radicals of SO4 •-, OH•, non-radical of 1O2 and even direct oxidation all occurred in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation process. Hence, to regulate the above radical or non-radical mechanism is of great significance for the treatment of organic pollutants in practical water. In this work, MgAl-minerals exhibited a satisfied performance in controlling the contribution of radicals (SO4 •-, OH•) and non-radical (1O2) towards PMS activation based on results of reactive oxygen species scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance spectra. Compared with MgAl-1(61.8%) and MgAl-2 (61.4%) (Al/Mg = 1, 2), MgAl-3 (Al/Mg = 3) exhibited the highest sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal efficiency (92.5%). Moreover, the contribution of radical and non-radical to SMX degradation were 56.7% and 30.1%, which was different from that of MgAl-1(7.8% and 39.5%) and MgAl-2 (5.2% and 41.6%). The roles of Lewis acid-base site and oxygen vacancies (OVs) in MgAl-minerals on radical and non-radical processes were detailed investigated. Lewis acid sites and OVs can enrich SMX and PMS at the solid-water interface. Simultaneously, OVs promote electron transfer from SMX to PMS acts as electron media, resulting in more SO4 •- and OH• generation. While the basic sites favored the generation of 1O2 via PMS self-decomposition mechanism. Therefore, in PMS activation process over MgAl-minerals, the involved reactive oxygen species can be regulated via controlling the amounts of Lewis acid-base sites and oxygen vacancies. This finding provided new insights into PMS oxidation over non-transition metal-based catalysts and water remediation with complex water characteristics.

Abstract:In recent years, the activation of persulfates (peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS)) via transition metal ions for contaminants degradation has received extensive attention in water treatment. There has been growing interest on the mechanism (radical versus non-radical pathway) of activation processes. Interestingly, in contrast to copper, iron or cobalt ions regarded as effective activators for persulfates, manganese ion (Mn(II)) is inefficient for persulfates activation. Inspired by the enhanced stability of manganese species by ligands, this study for the first time systemically investigated the Mn(II)/persulfates with different ligands as a novel oxidation technology. UV-vis spectrometry, chemical probing method and mass spectrometry were used to explore the reactive intermediate (free radical versus high-valent manganese species) therein. It was surprisingly found that the oxidation efficiency of Mn(II)/ligand/persulfates system was highly dependent on the nature of persulfates and ligands. Mn(II) chelated by amino ligands such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and nitrilotriacetate (NTA) could efficiently trigger the oxidation of contaminants (e.g., recalcitrant compounds nitrophenol, benzoic acid and atrazine) by PMS, suggesting a promising Mn(II)/ligand/PMS technology for environmental decontamination especially under manganese-rich conditions. High-valent Mn species (Mn(V)) but not free radicals was demonstrated to be the dominant reactive intermediate, where Mn(III) species played a vital role in Mn(V) generation. The formation of Mn(III) species was found to be affected by the reactivity of persulfates and the type of ligands, thus influencing its further oxidation to Mn(V) species. This study presents a new oxidation process based on the combination of PMS and Mn(II) complex and broadens the knowledge of persulfates activation as well manganese chemistry for decontamination in water treatment.

Abstract:Cast iron pipes are commonly applied in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs); peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is a promising alternative for drinking water disinfection; organic micropollutants is still present in drinking water after waterworks' treatment. However, iron corrosion products may affect the reactions between a disinfectant and organic micropollutants. The study investigated the transformation of iopamidol (IPM) and atrazine (ATZ) by PMS under the catalysis of a composite iron corrosion product (Fe/Fe3O4). The pseudo-first-order rate constants (k) for the degradation of IPM and ATZ were 1.47 and 1.03 min–1, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments indicated that PMS was effectively activated to yield sulfate radical (SO4•−) and hydroxyl radical (HO•), mainly via the reduction by Fe component, dissolved Fe2+ and generated <math>Feocta2+</math>. SO4•− contributed more than HO• to the degradation of IPM and ATZ, and the radical yield achieved 0.97 mol/mol. The k values reached maximum with Fe/Fe3O4 and PMS doses of 2.5 g L–1 and 25 mg L–1, respectively. The optimum mass fraction of Fe3O4 in Fe/Fe3O4 (MFmag) and pH were 10% and 7.0, respectively. The k values increased with increasing temperature, while decreased in the presence of water matrix. Most of the iodine released from IPM was oxidized to IO3−, and NH4+ was the dominant species of nitrogen released from ATZ. The identification of transformation intermediates showed that the radical chain reactions of IPM was mainly initiated from single electron transfer and radical adduct formation, while those of ATZ was primarily initiated from hydrogen atom abstraction and radical adduct formation.

Abstract:This study investigated the effectiveness of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as an oxidative agent in micro-contaminant removal with activation via simulated solar irradiation (Xe-lamp, emission spectrum ranging from 300 to 800 nm). During solar/PMS treatment, the abatement of nitrobenzene (NB) and flunixin meglumine (FMME), aspirin (ASA), and benzoic (BA) followed pseudo-first order kinetics, with degradation kinetics at pH 8.5 faster (1.28-1.78 times) than that at pH 5.5. The removal rates of NB, FMME, ASA, and BA with initial concentrations of 10.0 μΜ achieved 51.2%, 68.0%, 66.6%, and 90.7% in 15 min at pH 8.5, respectively, with corresponding pseudo-first order rate constants (kobs) of 5.1×10-2, 7.7×10-2, 7.4×10-2, and 1.6×10-1 min-1, respectively. Production of hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals (SO4·-), and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determined by using NB and BA as probe compounds in the solar/PMS system. At pH of 5.5-8.5, SO4·- made a dominant contribution (45.7% and 52.0%, respectively) to the overall removal of ASA and FMME. Compared with treatment of chlorination alone, solar/PMS pretreatment followed with post-chlorination resulted in significant increase in disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation (by 176% for trihalomethanes and 273% for haloacetic acids) in the Yangtze River water samples, as well as inhibition of algae growth (by 35.6%) due to higher toxic effects of residual PMS or potential oxidizing intermediates in the system. The lowest EE/Ototal consumed in the solar/PMS system was estimated as 72-110 kWh·m-3·order-1 with the optimal PMS dosages as 0.36-0.68 mM. This work illuminated that solar/PMS pre-oxidation is an efficient and cost-effective application for depletion of organic micro-pollutants, while potential risk of increased DBPs production and bio-toxicity should also be considered when applying the system to practical water treatment.

Abstract:Application of activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate sulfate radical or hydroxyl radical is a promising strategy for wastewater treatment, while our knowledge on the background reaction, namely, the direct interaction between PMS and target contaminants is quite limited. In this contribution, the degradation kinetics, stoichiometry, products and mechanism of the reaction between unactivated PMS and trimethoprim (TMP), one of the most commonly detected micro-pollutants in the aquatic system were investigated systematically. The results indicated that TMP was susceptible to degradation by direct PMS oxidation via a non-radical process. By recording the decay of two reactants simultaneously, the stoichiometric ratio between PMS and TMP was estimated to be approximately 1. Higher PMS levels exhibited a promotion effect on PMS decay. And the degradation was pH-dependent, basic conditions were favorable for TMP degradation, which could be well modeled based on the species-specific reactions. The two amine groups on the pyrimidine ring were identified as the reactive sites. After direct attacks by PMS, they would be oxidized to form hydroxylamine-products, namely, N8-OH-TMP and N9-OH-TMP. These two hydroxylamine-products were quite stable and resistant to further oxidation by PMS, preventing the formation of more toxic nitroso- and nitro-products. The new findings in the present work would provide beneficial information on the strategy choice for the elimination of specific pollutants, like TMP, as PMS also exhibits relatively high reactivity towards them.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation was investigated through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by the synthesized flower-like Fe3S4, which showed the best performance with the highest reaction stoichiometric efficiency (7.9%). 99% of SMX (2 mg/L) was eliminated from reaction solution during 30 min with 20 mg/L Fe3S4 and 0.1 mM PMS. The main reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the contaminant decomposition were investigated through quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization. In addition to the typical sulfate radical (SO4 •-) and hydroxyl radical (HO•), it should be noted that non-radical singlet oxygen (1O2) was generated and participated in the catalytic oxidation of compounds. The degradation of SMX in the PMS alone system through non-radical pathway and in the Fe3S4/PMS system by both radical and non-radical pathways were proposed according to the detected intermediates. The ecotoxicity of SMX and its by-products were evaluated through the quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. The present study provided new insight into the mechanism of organic compound removal by ROS including radical and non-radical in Fe3S4/PMS system.

Abstract:Recent work has demonstrated the feasibility of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by metal oxide (MeOx) nanoparticles for organic micropollutants removal, whereas little is known about its performance on membrane fouling control. In this work, PMS oxidation activated by typical MeOx nanoparticles (i.e., MnO2, CuO and Co3O4) were proposed for reducing organic membrane fouling in surface water treatment. The results showed that PMS alone and MnO2/PMS were only effective for alleviating reversible fouling, whereas the mitigation effect for irreversible fouling was relatively limited. By contrast, CuO/PMS and Co3O4/PMS dramatically alleviated both reversible and irreversible fouling. To identify the organic composition in surface water, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix coupled with parallel factor and molecular weight distribution analyses were conducted. MeOx/PMS oxidation decreased each fluorescent component to varying degrees, and also converted macromolecular organics into low molecular weight substances. The oxidation ability of MeOx/PMS was affected by the type of MeOx, which followed the order: Co3O4 > CuO > MnO2. The effect of natural organic matter fraction on fouling control was further studied with humic acid, bovine serum albumin, and sodium alginate. The effectiveness of Co3O4/PMS in alleviating membrane fouling by multiple pollutants was further verified via scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The presence of MeOx nanoparticles significantly accelerated the consumption of PMS, and the generation of both (OH)-O-center dot and SO4 center dot- radicals was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and radical quenching tests. The model fitting results suggested that the conversion of fouling mechanism from pore blocking to cake filtration was delayed to varying degrees by MeOx/PMS. The results suggest that MeOx/PMS oxidation has the potential for membrane fouling control in practical applications.

Abstract:ε-MnO2 effectively activates peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the efficient degradation of emerging pollutants. ε-MnO2 was synthesized by a facile thermal-treatment method and its long-term stability and efficiency for the elimination of emerging pollutants, including sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfachloropyridazine (SCP), sulfamethazine (SMT), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and azithromycin (AZI), from aqueous media were evaluated. ε-MnO2 was found to activate PMS more efficiently than α-MnO2, β-MnO2, or δ-MnO2, owing to its high −OH-group content, unique structure, and high surface area. Sulfate (SO4•−), hydroxyl (•OH), and superoxide (O2•−) radicals, as well as singlet oxygen (1O2) were generated, with O2•− acting as the 1O2 precursor. The ε-MnO2/PMS system proved to be effective in the pH range of 3.5–9.0 and the rate of SMX degradation was not significantly affected by the presence of inorganic anions or natural organic matter. The proposed pathway for the activation of PMS by ε-MnO2 includes inner-sphere interactions between ε-MnO2 and PMS, and electron transfer to PMS via the MnIII ↔ MnIV redox cycle, which generates reactive oxygen species. These findings provide new insight into PMS activation by less-toxic metal oxides as catalysts and demonstrate that Mn-based materials can be used to effectively treat water matrices containing emerging pollutants.

Abstract:In the field of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation technology, there is a pressing need to reduce PMS consumption and enhance its utilization rate. The present study demonstrates that the introduction of dissolved oxygen (DO) into the Mn(II)-nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA)-activated PMS system significantly enhances the degradation efficiency of sulfadiazine and increases the PMS utilization rate from approximately 15.0 to 41.3 %. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the Mn(II)-NTA/PMS system generates sulfate radicals as well as intermediate valent manganese species in the absence of DO; while in the presence of DO, Mn(II) is oxidized to Mn(III) by dioxygen to form superoxide anions and Mn(III), which can be further oxidized by PMS to higher valence states such as Mn(V) and Mn(VII). Consequently, the production of free radicals decreases while intermediate valent manganese species become more abundant. Additionally, O 2 •− can also reduce both Mn(VII) and Mn(IV) back to their lower oxidation state (Mn(II)). The cooperative interactions between these active species enhance the efficiency of catalytic cycles of manganese species. Moreover, the influence of multiple factors, the degradation products, and their associated toxicity assessment were investigated. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the design of highly efficient PMS and DO activation systems.

Abstract:Although the activation mechanisms of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by various homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been reported, the chemistry of PMS in catalyst-free systems and its interaction with background oxygenated anions remains poorly understood. In this study, the unactivated PMS and carbonate-activated PMS (CO 3 2– /PMS) systems for removal of various organic pollutant (including oxytetracycline (OTC), metronidazole (MNZ), methylene blue (MB), and acid orange G (OG)) were investigated. The results showed that 74.5 %, 90.21 %, 1.22 %, and 2.25 % of OTC, MB, OG, and MNZ were removed, respectively within 180 min in the unactivated PMS system due to the formation of · OH and 1 O 2 . 95.88 %, 100 %, 100 %, and 6.09 % of OTC, MB, OG, and MNZ were removed, respectively in the CO 3 2– /PMS system, which is primary due to the generation of 1 O 2 . The removal efficiencies of these four pollutants were significantly improved under alkaline conditions. In addition, the TOC removal rates were 21.88 % for MB and 26.53 % for OTC within 180 min in the CO 3 2– /PMS system. The presence of Cl − and SO 4 2− can greatly enhance the OTC removal efficiency both in the unactivated and CO 3 2– /PMS systems. Through the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) analysis, OTC degradation products in the unactivated PMS and CO 3 2– /PMS systems were identified, revealing six different reaction mechanisms, including hydroxylation (+16 Da), decarbonylation (−28 Da), demethylation (−14 Da), secondary alcohol oxidation (−2 Da), deamination (−15 Da), and dehydration (−18 Da). This study provides insight into the reaction mechanism of catalyst-free PMS systems and may promote the application of unactivated PMS and CO 3 2– /PMS systems for the remediation of organic contaminated water.

Abstract:The threaten of ubiquitous antibiotics to human and ecosystem makes it urgent to seek efficient treatment technologies. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have revealed wide prospects for wastewater treatment via controllable PMS activation for desired ROS generation. Herein, a novel TiO2 photoelectrode decorated with atomically distributed Mn (SA-MnTiO2) was designed via a modified molten salt method (MSM) for photo-electro-catalytic (PEC) activation of PMS. The electron transfer in reduction-/oxidation-state Mn(II)/Mn(III)/Mn(IV) cycles facilitated the cleavage of intramolecular O–O bonds in PMS to preferentially generate hydroxyl radical (HO•). Almost complete degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) was occurred with optimal SA-Mn0.6TiO2 within 15 min, exhibiting high turnover frequency (0.066 min−1). Around 74.8% of total organic carbon was eliminated with a low specific energy consumption of 0.94 kW h/g. The key operational parameters during actual wastewater treatment were inspected for SA-Mn0.6TiO2/PMS system, suggesting the satisfactory stability for practical applications.

Abstract:Metal coagulants, which are widely employed in water and wastewater treatments, have been recently found to have catalyzation effect on oxidation, while chemical oxidation, in turn, could possibly impose impacts on coagulation process. In this study, a hybrid coagulation/oxidation process was developed using four metal-based coagulants, i.e., aluminum sulfate (Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ), ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ), titanic sulfate (Ti(SO 4 ) 2 ), zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl 2 ) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as the oxidant, for removing ciprofloxacin (CIP), which is a representative emerging organic contaminant (EOC) with small molecular weight (MW). The results showed PMS (0.2 mM) improved the CIP removals by Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and FeCl 3 from 13 % and 21 % respectively to around 92 % at the coagulant dose of 0.02 mM, and for Ti(SO 4 ) 2 and ZrOCl 2 , the CIP removal was increased from about 21 % to 70∼75 %, which was also more efficient than separate PMS oxidation (around 42 %). The results of zeta potential, dynamic floc growth and residual coagulants demonstrated PMS led to the destabilization of coagulation suspensions, where lag time for floc formation was largely shortened and also, residual metal coagulants in terms of dissolved and colloids/particles were decreased. PMS alleviated the negative effect of crystallization on colloids and clots aggregation via reducing the quantity and crystallinity of nanocrystal according to the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analysis, which facilitated the flocculation. The results of radicals scavenging experiments verified metal coagulants could activate PMS in turn, where • OH played a dominant role in CIP degradation. While, the four kinds of coagulants behaved significantly different when combined with PMS. Due to the different hydrolysis and polymerization properties, coupling PMS with aluminum/iron salt were more efficient than with titanium/zirconium. Nevertheless, the synthetic effect was suppressed as the metal dose increased to 0.1 mM and above, where restabilization occurred. Therefore, coagulation played a major role in coagulant/PMS process, which could provide a promising technology for CIP removals.

Abstract:Strategic modulation of the advanced oxidation processes for the selective oxidation of micropollutants has attracted accumulating attention in water decontamination . This study first reported the combination of the coagulant polyferric sulfate (PFS) and oxidant periodate (PI) to accomplish synergistic abatement of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The oxidizing performance of SMX by this system was almost unaffected by coexisting water constituents, indicating the great promise of selective oxidation. Different from the current hydroxyl radicals ( • OH)-mediated coagulant/oxidant systems (e.g., PFS/H 2 O 2 and PFS/ozone), the dominance of high-valent Fe(IV)/Fe(V) intermediates was unambiguously verified in the PFS/PI treatment. The PFS colloids before and after the oxidation were characterized and the iron speciation was analyzed. The transformation of monomeric iron configurations (Fe(a)) to oligomeric iron configurations (Fe(b)) could maintain the homeostasis of surface-bound Fe(III) and Fe(II). The interaction mechanisms included the production of reactive species and dynamic reaction equilibrium for micropollutant degradation. Finally, the transformation pathways of SMX and carbamazepine (CMZ) in the PFS/PI system were postulated. Overall, this study provided a novel coagulant/oxidant strategy to achieve selective and sustainable water purification.
