Abstract:Supported silver catalysts showed good activity for hydrogen production from partial oxidation of methanol (POM) at a low temperature of 160°C. Ag/CeO2–ZnO catalysts, prepared by the method of redox coprecipitation, displayed distinguished hydrogen selectivity (SH2) and methanol conversion. In preparation of the catalysts, Ag+ ions were found reduced into metal clusters by Ce3+ ions. X-ray diffraction study revealed that the active silver crystallites were dispersed amorphously on the catalysts. Thermal characterization of temperature programmed hydrogen reduction and temperature programmed hydrogen desorption further suggested that CeO2 and ZnO played different roles in the high SH2 over Ag/CeO2–ZnO. Promoter CeO2 served as a spillover sink to collect hydrogen dissociated on silver crystallites while ZnO acted as a porthole for a fast desorption of hydrogen from the catalyst. These two oxides corporately raised the high SH2 over Ag/CeO2–ZnO catalysts.

Abstract:CH3OH+12O2→2H2+CO2This reaction was studied over binary Cu/Cr and ternary Cu/Cr/M (M=Fe, Zn, Ce, etc.) catalysts. Experimental results show that Cu60Cr40 catalyst exhibits high performance comparing with the other binary catalysts and the introduction of Zn promoter is favorable not only to increase the activity of Cu60Cr40 catalyst but also to improve the stability of the catalyst.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of methane to methanol under mild conditions has been considered as a dream reaction but suffers from poor efficiency due to the strong C-H bond of methane and easy overoxidation of the methanol product. For overcoming these problems, a series of strategies has been developed for improving methanol productivity with oxidants of hydrogen peroxide and even a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen at mild temperatures. Significant achievements in these strategies using effective catalysts, such as supported metal nanoparticles, colloidal metal nanoparticles, and metal@zeolites are briefly concluded. Moreover, the current challenges, future perspectives for preparing active, selective, and stable catalysts, have been discussed. The zeolite fixed metal nanoparticle structure has been found to boost the reaction by benefiting the formation and enrichment of peroxide intermediates, which might guide the development of more efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Gold particle with an average size of dAu ~ 4 nm was dispersed on ZnO by the deposition precipitation method. The fabricated Au/ZnO catalyst was used to produce hydrogen from reforming of methanol. Four reforming reactions, i.e., decomposition of methanol (DM), steam reforming of methanol (SRM), partial oxidation of methanol (POM) and oxidative steam reforming of methanol (OSRM), were evaluated in a fixed bed reactor. A reaction temperature of TR > 623 K was required for catalyzing reactions of DM and SRM. Interestingly, high methanol conversion (CMeOH > 90%) was found from reforming reactions of POM and OSRM at an amazing low temperature of TR < 473 K. Besides, a presentable hydrogen yield (RH2 ~ 2.4) and a low selectivity of CO (SCO ~ 1%) were simultaneously attained from the reaction of OSRM. Therefore, the low temperature OSRM reaction over the Au/ZnO catalyst is suggested as a friendly reforming process for on-board production of hydrogen.

Abstract:Methanol with 12.5 wt% H 2 content is widely considered a liquid hydrogen medium. Taking into account water with 11.1 wt% H 2 content, H 2 synthesis from the mixture of water and methanol is a promising method for on-demand hydrogen production. We demonstrate an atomic-level catalyst design strategy using the synergy between single atoms and nanodots for H 2 production. The PtCu–TiO 2 sandwich photocatalyst achieves a remarkable H 2 formation rate (2,383.9 μmol h –1 ) with a high apparent quantum efficiency (99.2%). Furthermore, the oxidation product is a high-value chemical formaldehyde with 98.6% selectivity instead of CO 2 , leading to a nearly zero-carbon-emission process. Detailed investigations indicate a dual role of the copper atoms: an electron acceptor to facilitate photoelectron transfer to Pt, and a hole acceptor for the selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde, thus avoiding over-oxidation to CO 2 . The synergy between Pt nanodots and Cu single atoms together reduces the activation energy of this process to 13.2 kJ mol –1 .

Abstract:Novel Ag/SiO2–Al2O3 catalysts with low silver content prepared by the sol–gel method exhibit excellent catalytic properties in the catalytic oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. The silver content was as low as 2% and the yield of formaldehyde was achieved as 90.3%, which is 16% higher than that of pumice‐supported silver and even 5–6% higher than that of a commercial electrolytic silver catalyst. XRD, XPS and SEM results reveal that all silver was present as Ag+ before catalytic reaction and was partially reduced to the metallic state after the reaction. It was also found that silver was aggregated on the surface after its reduction.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane into value-added chemicals, such as methanol under mild conditions, is a promising route for industrial applications. In this work, atomically dispersed Rh on TiO2 suspended in an aqueous solution was used for the oxidation of methane to methanol. Promoted by copper cations (as co-catalyst) in solution, the catalysts exhibited high activity and selectivity for the production of methanol using molecular oxygen with the presence of carbon monoxide at 150 °C with a reaction pressure of 31 bar. Millimole level yields of methanol were reached with the selectivity higher than 99 % using the Rh/TiO2 catalysts with the promotion of the copper cation. CO was the reductive agent to generate H2 from H2 O, which led to the formation of H2 O2 through the reaction of H2 and O2 . Atomically dispersed Rh activated the C-H bond in CH4 and catalyzed the oxidation using H2 O2 . Copper cations maintained the low-valence state of Rh. Moreover, copper acted as a scavenger for suppressing the overoxidation, thus leading to the high selectivity of methanol.

Abstract:In this work, a novel Ni–Cu/Al2O3 catalyst is used to trigger the partial oxidation of methanol (POM) for hydrogen production. This reaction system also employed ultrasonic sprays to aid in dispersing methanol fuel. The prepared catalyst is analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to explore the catalyst's surface structure, elemental composition, and physical structure, respectively. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) of response surface methodology (RSM) is utilized for experimental design to achieve process optimization. The operating parameters comprise the O2/C molar ratio (0.5–0.7), preheating temperature (150–250 °C), and weight percent (wt%) of Ni (10–30%) in the catalyst. The results show that methanol conversion is 100% in all the operating conditions, while the reaction temperature for H2 production ranges from 160 to 750 °C, stemming from heat released by POM. The significance and suitability of operating conditions are also analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). It indicates that the highest H2 yield is 2 mol (mol CH3OH)−1, occurring at O2/C = 0.5, preheating temperature = 150 °C, and Ni wt% = 10. Compared with the commercial h-BN-Pt/Al2O3 catalyst, the prepared Ni–Cu/Al2O3 catalysts have higher activity for H2 production. The O2/C ratio is the most influential factor in the H2 yield. Moreover, the interaction of the O2/C ratio and Ni content is sound, reflecting that changing Ni content in the catalyst will affect the trend of H2 yield under each O2/C.

Abstract:Hydrogen is one of the most promising future energy sources due to its highly efficient energy storage and carbon-free features. However, the energy input required for a hydrogen production protocol is an essential factor affecting its widespread adoption. Water electrolysis for hydrogen production currently serves a vital role in the industrial field, but the high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) dramatically impedes its practical application. The formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) has emerged as a more thermodynamically favorable alternative, and the innovation of compatible electrodes may steer the direction of technological evolution. We have designed Au-Vo-NiO/CC as a catalyst that triggers the electrocatalytic oxidation of formaldehyde, efficiently producing H<sub>2</sub> at the ultra-low potential of 0.47 V (vs. RHE) and maintaining long-term stability. Integrated with the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), this bipolar H<sub>2</sub> production protocol achieves a nearly 100% Faraday efficiency (FE).

Abstract:The Ag/OMS-2 catalysts prepared by the simple reflux method show high activity and stability for the CO selective oxidation in rich H-2 stream. The catalysts are characterized by means of XRD, BET, XRF, XPS, SEM, TEM and H-2-TPR. The results show that the materials have the cryptomelane type structure with a one-dimensional channel and Ag ions are well dispersed in the micropores of the cryptomelane structure. The catalytic activity for CO selective oxidation was increased after Ag introduction. In the longtime stability test under the realistic reaction condition, 100% CO conversion can maintain for 250 h at 120 degrees C with about 90% selectivity. The main reason for the deactivation of the Ag/OMS-2 catalysts is that the fine-dispersed silver species are agglomerated to form Ag2O and parts of OMS-2 are reduced to Mn2O3, accompanied with a structure reordering. Abstract:Abstract The broad employment of water electrolysis for hydrogen (H 2 ) production is restricted by its large voltage requirement and low energy conversion efficiency because of the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we report a strategy to replace OER with a thermodynamically more favorable reaction, the partial oxidation of formaldehyde to formate under alkaline conditions, using a Cu 3 Ag 7 electrocatalyst. Such a strategy not only produces more valuable anodic product than O 2 but also releases H 2 at the anode with a small voltage input. Density functional theory studies indicate the H 2 C(OH)O intermediate from formaldehyde hydration can be better stabilized on Cu 3 Ag 7 than on Cu or Ag, leading to a lower C-H cleavage barrier. A two-electrode electrolyzer employing an electrocatalyst of Cu 3 Ag 7 (+)||Ni 3 N/Ni(–) can produce H 2 at both anode and cathode simultaneously with an apparent 200% Faradaic efficiency, reaching a current density of 500 mA/cm 2 with a cell voltage of only 0.60 V.

Modulating Silver Performance in Electrocatalytic Oxidation of HCHO via SMSI between Ag‐Co3O4 Interfaces

Abstract:Ag/Co3O4 interface catalysts achieve strong SMSI through well‐designed "spontaneous redox reaction" between their precursors. Ag particles of controllable size are uniformly dispersed on Co3O4 nanosheets, and electron‐deficient Agδ+ are formed by the SMSI between Ag and Co3O4. Ag/Co3O4 interface catalysts with abundant Agδ+ show exceptional formaldehyde oxidation activity and long‐term stability. The replacement of oxygen evolution reactions with organic molecule oxidation reactions to enable energy‐efficient hydrogen production has been a subject of interest. However, further reducing reaction energy consumption and releasing hydrogen from organic molecules continue to pose significant challenges. Herein, a strategy is proposed to produce hydrogen and formic acid from formaldehyde using Ag/Co3O4 interface catalysts at the anode. The key to improving the performance of Ag‐based catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation lies in the strong SMSI achieved through the well‐designed "spontaneous redox reaction" between Ag and Co3O4 precursors. Nano‐sized Ag particles are uniformly dispersed on Co3O4 nanosheets, and electron‐deficient Agδ+ are formed by the SMSI between Ag and Co3O4. Ag/Co3O4 demonstrates exceptional formaldehyde oxidation activity at low potentials of 0.32 V versus RHE and 0.65 V versus RHE, achieving current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. The electrolyzer "Ag/Co3O4||20% Pt/C" achieves over 195% hydrogen efficiency and over 98% formic acid selectivity, maintaining stable operation for 60 hours. This work not only presents a novel approach to precisely modulate Ag particle size and interface electronic structure via SMSI, but also provides a promising approach to efficient and energy‐saving hydrogen production and the transformation of harmful formaldehyde.

Abstract:H-2 with ultra-low CO concentration was produced via photocatalytic reforming of methanol on Au/TiO2 catalyst. The rate of H-2 production is greatly increased when the gold particle size is reduced from 10 to smaller than 3 nm. The concentration of CO in H-2 decreases with reducing the gold particle size of the catalyst. It is suggested that the by-product CO is mostly produced via decomposition of the intermediate formic acid species derived from methanol. The smaller gold particles possibly switch the HCOOH decomposition reaction mainly to H-2 and CO2 products while suppress the CO and H2O products. In addition, some CO may be oxidized to CO2 by photogenerated oxidizing species at the perimeter interface between the small gold particles and TiO2 under photocatalytic condition. Abstract:Oxidative steam reforming of methanol to produce hydrogen was studied over Ce1-xZnxOy catalysts with different Ce/Zn ratio prepared by combustion method. Ce1-xZnxOy catalysts showed better catalytic activity, higher hydrogen selectivity and lower CO selectivity than both pure CeO2 and ZnO. When x <= 0.1, the catalysts by combustion formed Ce1-xZnxOy solid solution and the catalyst of Ce0.92Zn0.80Oy showed the best activity. The addition of ZnO promoted the reduction of CeO2 and significantly enhanced the adsorption of methanol, which may be responsible for the high activities of Ce1-xZnxOy. Electrocatalysis Boosts the Methanol Thermocatalytic Dehydrogenation for High-Purity H2 and CO Production

Abstract:Hydrogen production from methanol represents an energy-sustainable way to produce ethanol, but it normally results in heavy CO2 emissions. The selective conversion of methanol into H2 and valuable chemical feedstocks offers a promising strategy; however, it is limited by the harsh operating conditions and low conversion efficiency. Herein, we realize efficient high-purity H2 and CO production from methanol by coupling the thermocatalytic methanol dehydrogenation with electrocatalytic hydrogen oxidation on a bifunctional Ru/C catalyst. Electrocatalysis enables the acceleration of C-H cleavage and reduces the partial pressure of hydrogen at the anode, which drives the chemical equilibrium and significantly enhances methanol dehydrogenation. Furthermore, a bilayer Ru/C + Pd/C electrode is designed to mitigate CO poisoning and facilitate hydrogen oxidation. As a result, a high yield of H2 (558.54 mmol h-1 g-1) with high purity (99.9%) was achieved by integrating an applied cell voltage of 0.4 V at 200 °C, superior to the conventional thermal and electrocatalytic processes, and CO is the main product at the anode. This work presents a new avenue for efficient H2 production together with valuable chemical synthesis from methanol.

Abstract:Hydrogen can be produced over Er2O3 in methane oxidation (oxygen/methane = 26). The reactivity of lattice oxygen in the catalyst plays a main role in the conversion of surface hydroxyl species to hydrogen or water. Adding a rare earth element into a catalyst can reduce the reactivity of lattice oxygen, resulting in increased hydrogen production, to eliminate catalyst hot-spots.
