Abstract:Solution-processed, high-performance 1D single-crystalline nanoribbon transistors fabricated from dithioperylene are described. The integration of two sulfur atoms into the perylene skeleton induces a compressed highly ordered packing mode directed by S center dot center dot center dot S interactions. The mobilities of up to 2.13 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) for a dithioperylene individual nanoribbon make it particularly attractive for electronic applications.

Abstract:Dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (DTT) derivative contains three annulated thiophene rings, which have attracted great attention in the field of materials due to its planar and conjugated molecular, structural rigidity, and increased solubility. Herein, the one-step modular construction of a series of structurally well-defined 2,6-disubstituted dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophenes (2,6-DTT) involves Pd/Cu(I)-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling and LiNH2-mediated ring-closing reaction with element sulfur was reported. The method allows the selective and straightforward introduction of different aryl substitution into DTT without otherwise tedious separation and purification processes. The preliminary study of the thermal and photophysical properties demonstrated that the introduction of substituent in phenyl has great impact for the parent molecule, which enable this protocol to synthesis high-performance 2,6-DTT through the different alkynes.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:Two solution-processable, carbazole-based iridium dendrimers (Ir-1 and Ir-2) were synthesized and characterized. The presence of carbazolyl substituent on the cyclometallated ligand resulted in improved solubility, good control over intermolecular interactions, and improved hole transport properties. The triazole ancillary ligand led to improved electron transport properties. When the dendrimers were employed as host-free light-emitting layers in the OLEDs, the devices exhibited a low turn-on voltage of 5.4 V. The maximal external quantum efficiencies and luminous efficiency of the devices obtained from Ir-1 and Ir-2 were 5.1% and 3.3 cd A(-1) and 7.9% and 4.4 cd A(-1), respectively, both with saturated red emission (CIE coordinates, 0.663, 0.332). The devices have a structure of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythio phene)/dendrimer/1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimiazole-2-yl)benzene/cesium fluoride/aluminum. Given ease of synthesis and good device performance, these iridium dendrimers can be used to fully exploit the potential of low-cost OLEDs, leading to more applications in high-efficiency OLEDs. A Novel Low Band Gap Polymer PDTNTBQ

Abstract:A novel low band gap polymer, poly[(2′,5′-di(α-thienyl)-3′,4′-dinitrothiophene-5,5′′-diyl)-benzylidene-block-(2′,5′-di(α-thienyl)-3′,4′-dinitrothiophenequinodimethane-5,5′′-diyl)](PDTNTBQ), was synthesized by the two-step synthetic routes. The polymer incorporates strong electron-donating and electron-accepting moieties into the conjugated poly(heteroarylene methines) backbone. The polymer was readily soluble in common organic solvents, such as chloroform and THF. The optical and electrochemical measurements showed a low band gap of ~1.10eV.
Diketopyrrolopyrrole-based small molecules for solution-processed n-channel organic thin film transistors

Abstract:Four conjugated molecules with thiophene-flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) as the core and 3-(dicyanomethylidene)indan-1-one (IC), dichlorinated IC (2Cl-IC) and difluorinated IC (2F-IC) as termini, i.e. DPP1012, DPP1012-4Cl, DPP1012-4F and DPP68-4F were synthesized. These molecules have similar band gaps of ca. 1.2 eV and deep lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels below -4.1 eV. Single crystal structure analysis showed that DPP68-4F adopted a slipped one dimensional pi-stacking structure with a pi-pi stacking distance of 3.57 angstrom in crystals. Top gate/bottom contact (TG/BC) organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) were fabricated via spin-coating. All molecules exhibited typical n-type characteristics with an electron mobility (mu(e)) of up to 0.44, 0.26, 1.05 and 0.58 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) for DPP1012, DPP1012-4Cl, DPP1012-4F and DPP68-4F, respectively. Devices based on DPP1012-4F displayed the best device performance since its films were characterized by the highest packing order and appropriate film morphology. This work shows the great potential of the integration of the planar conjugated core and IC-type termini in designing solution processable high mobility n-type small molecule semiconductors.

Abstract:A new n-type organic semiconductor, i.e., C12-4CldiPBI, is synthesized by a simple and facile route. Single crystal ribbons of C12-4CldiPBI are grown facilely by a solvent vapor diffusion strategy. Organic field-effect transistors based on individual ribbons are fabricated by a new technique named “Au stripe mask” method. All devices exhibit excellent n-type transistor behavior with negligible hysteresis, and all devices give an electron mobility over 1.0 cm2 V−1 s−1 with the highest mobility of 4.65 cm2 V−1 s−1. Moreover, the devices exhibit excellent air stability.

Abstract:Micrometer sized single crystalline ribbons of a Se-heterocyclic annelated perylene were prepared by drop casting and physical vapor transport techniques. The crystals of the Se-heterocyclic annelated perylene showed near planar molecular conformation, which regularly stacked along b-axis with Se center dot Se contacts at 3.49 A. Single crystal transistors of individual ribbon were fabricated by "gold layer glue" technique. Over 90% transistors exhibited mobility >1.6 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), the highest mobility approaching 2.66 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). The top performance indicated the bright prospect of this material in organic electronics.

Abstract:The synthesis of a rigid, planar H-type anthracene derivative is described. Single-crystalline ribbons at micro- and nanometer sizes can be controllably produced and transistors based on an individual ribbon can be fabricated in situ through a newly developed "organic ribbon mask" method, in which the channel length of the transistors can be easily scaled down to sub-micrometer level.

Abstract:In this research, two polymers of P1 and P2 based on monomers consisting of thiophene, 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) are designed and obtained via Stille coupling polycondensation. The material shows excellent coplanarity and structural regularity due to the fine planarity of DPP itself and the weak non-covalent bonding interactions existing between the three units. Two different lengths of non-conjugated side chains are introduced and this has an effect on the intermolecular chain stacking, causing the film absorption to display different characteristic properties. On the other hand, the difference in the side chains does not have a significant effect on the thermal stability and the energy levels of the frontier orbitals of the materials, which is related to the fact that the materials both feature extremely high conjugation lengths and specific molecular compositions. Microscopic investigations targeting the side chains provide a contribution to the further design of organic semiconductor materials that meet device requirements. Tests based on organic transistors show a slight difference in conductivity between the two polymers, with P2 having better hole mobility than P1. This study highlights the importance of the impact of side chains on device performance, especially in the field of organic electronics.

Abstract:Oligomers and polymers consisting of multiple thiophenes are widely used in organic electronics such as organic transistors and sensors because of their strong electron-donating ability. In this study, a solution to the problem of the poor solubility of polythiophene systems was developed. A novel π-conjugated polymer material, PDPP-5Th, was synthesized by adding the electron acceptor unit, DPP, to the polythiophene system with a long alkyl side chain, which facilitated the solution processing of the material for the preparation of devices. Meanwhile, the presence of the multicarbonyl groups within the DPP molecule facilitated donor–acceptor interactions in the internal chain, which further improved the hole-transport properties of the polythiophene-based material. The weak forces present within the molecules that promoted structural coplanarity were analyzed using theoretical simulations. Furthermore, the grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scanning (GIWAXS) results indicated that PDPP-5Th features high crystallinity, which is favorable for efficient carrier migration within and between polymer chains. The material showed hole transport properties as high as 0.44 cm2 V−1 s−1 in conductivity testing. Our investigations demonstrate the great potential of this polymer material in the field of optoelectronics.

Dianthraceno[a,e]pentalenes: synthesis, crystallographic structures and applications in organic field-effect transistors

Abstract:Two soluble and stable dianthraceno[a,e]pentalenes with two (DAP1) and six (DAP2) phenyl substituents were synthesized. Both compounds possess a small energy band gap and show amphoteric redox behaviour due to intramolecular donor-accepter interactions. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that DAP2 has a closely packed structure with multi-dimensional [C-H···π] interactions although there are no π-π interactions between the dianthraceno[a,e]pentalene cores. As a result, solution-processed field effect transistors based on DAP2 exhibited an average hole mobility of 0.65 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). Under similar conditions, DAP1 showed an average field effect hole mobility of 0.001 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1).

Abstract:We present here the synthesis, characterization, and transistor performance of three semiconductor materials based on tratzs-1,2-(dithieno[2,3-b:3',2'-d]thiophene)ethene derivatives. Although the incorporation of aromatic, alkyl substituents in both ends of trans-1,2-(dithieno[2,3-b:3',2'-d]thiophene)ethene have a negligible effect on the conjugation length and the energy gap, the subtle chemical modification leads to great variations in film microstructures, electronic properties, and packing arrangements. The appropriate substituents are capable of providing efficient molecular packing arrangements for high carrier mobility. The phenyl-substituted derivative, compound 3, demonstrates a remarkably high thin film FET performance, with mobility up to 2.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and on/off ratio up to 10(8). In addition, the devices show good environmental stability, even after storage in air for 7 months.

Abstract:The synthesis of novel regioregular poly( 4,8-didodecylbenzo[ 1,2-b: 4,5-b'] dithiophene) and its use as a semiconductor in organic thin-film transistors ( OTFTs) are described. The polymer was prepared from 2,6-dibromo-4,8-didodecylbenzo[ 1,2-b: 4,5-b']dithiophene by a dehalogenative coupling polymerization. A field-effect mobility of similar to 0.012 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and a current on/off ratio of similar to 2.5 x 10(5) have been obtained with OTFTs using this polymer semiconductor.

Abstract:In order to modulate the optoelectronic properties of thiophene-based conjugated polymers, two novel conjugated polymers (P1 and P2) comprising dithieno [3,2-b:2',3'-d] phosphole oxides (DTPhos) and 2, 2'-bithiophene have been designed and synthesized by Stille polycondensation, and their thermal, electrochemical and photophysical properties were studied. Both polymers are thermally stable with decomposition temperature above 400 degrees C, and exhibit the absorption maxima of ca. 590 nm and the optical band gap of 1. 76 eV. The incorporation of DTPhos units into polythiophene backbone results in a 0. 15 eV reduction of optical bandgap. HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymers as measured by cyclic voltammetry are -5. 1 and -2. 9 eV,respectively. Thin-film transistors (TFT) and bulk heterojunction solar cells (BHJ-SC) were fabricated based on P1 and P2. The performance of the devices increased with an increase of the alkyl chain length in the DTPhos units. With a bottom gate and top contact TFT device structure, P2 exhibited the hole mobility up to 0. 0077 cm(2)V(-1)s(-1). Under AM 1. 5 G illumination (100 mW/cm(2)),BHJ-SC based on P2 displayed an open-circuit voltage of 0. 68 V, a short-circuit current of 7. 9 mA/cm(2), a fill factor of 52% and a power conversion efficiency of 2. 8%. These results imply that DTPhos unit is a potential building block for high-performance polymer semiconductors.

Abstract:Singly linked and vinyl-linked dimers of dithienothiophenes exhibit different electronic behaviors. Single crystals of the singly linked dimer show a high conductivity of 0.265 S cm(-1) , five orders of magnitude higher than that of the vinyl-linked dimer. The huge increase in the hole density of singly linked dimers results from the formation of radicals, which can be reversibly tuned by facile thermal de-doping.

Abstract:Two isoelectronic dithiophene-fused perylene diimides (PDTI-1 and PDTI-2) were synthesized via a “bay-derivatization toward lateral extension” strategy. Single-crystal analysis unambiguously confirmed their unique structures and packing arrangements. The new PDTI system manifested significantly red-shifted absorptions with intense bands at 500–700 nm. Further dimerization indicated the potential of these dithiophene-fused PDIs as new building blocks for the construction of versatile rylene dyes in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Organic dye semiconductors have received increasing attention as the next generation of semiconductors, and one of their potential applications is as a core component of organic transistors. In this study, two novel diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) dye core-based materials were designed and separately prepared using Stille coupling reactions under different palladium catalyst conditions. The molecular weights and elemental compositions were tested to demonstrate that both catalysts could be used to successfully prepare materials of this structure, with the main differences being the weight-average molecular weight and the dispersion index. PDPP-2Py-2Tz I with a longer conjugation length exhibited better thermodynamic stability than the counterpart polymer PDPP-2Py-2Tz II. The intrinsic optical properties of the polymers were relatively similar, while the electrochemical tests showed small differences in their energy levels. The polymers obtained with different catalysts displayed similar and moderate electron mobility in transistor devices, while PDPP-2Py-2Tz I possessed a higher switching ratio. Our study provides a comparison of such dye materials under different catalytic conditions and also demonstrates the great potential of dye materials for optoelectronic applications.
Perylene Diimide Copolymers with Dithienothiophene and Dithienopyrrole: Use in N‐channel and Ambipolar Field‐effect Transistors

Abstract:Solution-processable polymers consisting of perylene diimide (PDI) acceptor moieties alternating with dithienothiophene (DTT), N-dodecyl-dithienopyrrole (DTP), or oligomers of these donor groups have been synthesized. We have, in addition to varying the donor, varied the N,N substituents of the PDIs. The thermal, optical, electrochemical, and charge-transport properties of the polymers have been investigated. The polymers show broad absorption extending from 300 to 1000 nm with optical band gaps as low as 1.2 eV; the band gap decreases with increasing the conjugation length of donor block, or by replacement of DTT by DTP. The electron affinities of the polymers, estimated from electrochemical data, range from 3.87 to 4.01 eV and are slightly affected by the specific choice of donor moiety, while the estimated ionization potentials (5.31 to 5.92 eV) are more sensitive to the choice of donor. Bottom-gate top-contact organic field-effect transistors based on the polymers generally exhibit n-channel behavior with electron mobilities as high as 1.7 x 102 cm2/V/s and on/off ratios as high as 106; one PDI-DTP polymer is an ambipolar transport material with electron mobility of 4 x 104 cm2/V/s and hole mobility of 4 x 105 cm2/V/s in air. Synthesis and nano-field-effect transistors of p-type Zn0.3Cd0.7Te nanoribbons

Abstract:Ternarysemiconductor Zn0.3Cd0.7Te nanoribbons are, firstly, synthesized via a two-step process, and the structure characterizations reveal that the as-synthesized nanoribbons are single-crystalline with a zinc blende structure and a crystal growth direction of [1–10]. Nano-field-effect transistors are fabricated based on single nanoribbon, and the electron transport characteristics demonstrate that the Zn0.3Cd0.7Te ribbons have p-type conductivity with a mobility (μh) of 5.7cm2V−1S−1 and carrier concentration (nh) about 1.1×1017cm−3. The prepared nanoribbons with significant p-type conductivity will be a very attractive candidate for nanoelectronic devices.
