Abstract:A simple and efficient Ru-catalyzed conjugate addition reaction of arylboronic acids to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under neutral conditions without any additional ligands has been developed. This Ru(II)-catalytic system both fulfilled the inhibition of the beta-hydride elimination in the catalytic cycle and minimized the protonolysis of arylboronic acids.

Abstract:The first example of meta-selective CAr-H bond functionalization of aryl 2-pyridyl ketones has been developed using [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 as the catalyst and alkyl bromide as the coupling reagent. Abstract:A ruthenium catalytic ortho-C-H diborylation of 2-arylpyridine derivatives, including challenging 2-phenoxypyridine functions, using a remarkably low catalyst loading and a low-cost and bench-stable boron source, has been developed. The novel strategy shows high activity with excellent selectivity and may offer a versatile and green alternative to currently employed high loadings of noble metals or extra additives for the selective borylations.

Abstract:The first ruthenium-catalyzed umpolung carboxylation of hydrazones with CO2 to generate important aryl acetic acids is reported. Besides aldehyde hydrazones, a variety of ketone hydrazones, which have not been successfully applied in previous umpolung reactions with other reactive electrophiles, also show high reactivity and selectivity under mild conditions. Moreover, this operationally simple protocol features good functional group tolerance, is readily scalable, and offers easy derivation of important structures, including bioactive felbinac and adiphenine. Computational studies reveal that this umpolung reaction proceeds through the generation of a Ru-nitrenoid followed by concerted [4 + 2] cycloaddition with CO2.

Abstract:The direct transition-metal-catalyzed addition of C–H bonds to unsaturated C=X (X=C, O, and N) bonds via C–H bond activation has been recognized as a powerful tool for the construction of C–C bonds (in terms of atom and step economy). Herein, the direct rhodium-catalyzed C–H bond addition of aromatic ketones to allylic alcohols and α,β-unsaturated ketones that afford β-aryl carbonyl compounds is described, in which a ketone carbonyl acts as a weakly coordinating directing group. It was found that the type of alkyl in aromatic ketones is crucial for the success of the reaction. This transformation provides a convenient and efficient methodology for the synthesis of 2-alkyl aromatic ketones in moderate-to-excellent yields.

Abstract:[Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2-catalyzed 1,4-addition reactions between arylboronic acids and butyl acrylate and acrylamide in the presence of phenols were investigated, good to excellent yields were obtained. The addition of phenols remarkably promoted the protonolysis and inhibited the β-H elimination of the 1,4-addition intermediates, and also efficiently suppressed the protonolysis of arylboronic acids.

Abstract:A ruthenium(II)‐catalyzed Michael addition of N‐acyl pyrroles to α,β‐unsaturated ketones has been developed by using a C−H activation strategy. The key to this selective reaction is to use an acyl group as an effective chelating group. The use of AgOTf remarkably promoted the protonolysis process and thereby facilitated the Michael addition reaction. Monoalkylated pyrroles could be selectively synthesized by controlling the ratio of α,β‐unsaturated ketones to N‐acyl pyrroles.

Abstract:The efficient synthesis of pyranones is presented by a three-component cascade reaction from readily available acrylic acids, ethyl glyoxylate, and p-toluenesulfonamide under ruthenium catalysis. For the first time, the nucleophilic addition of the vinylic C-H bond of acrylic acids across aldehyde is achieved, and the intramolecular cyclization as well as subsequent second insertion to aldehyde form the substituted butenolides. The elimination of sulfonamides occurs at higher temperature to give the pyranones.

Abstract:The meta-C-Ar-H bond formylation of arenes has been achieved using CHBr3 as a formyl source in the presence of [Ru(p-cym)(OAc)(2)] as a catalyst. This method provides efficient access to the preparation of various meta-substituted aromatic compounds, such as alcohols, ethers, amines, nitriles, alkenes, halogens, carboxylic acids, and their derivatives, through transformation of the versatile formyl group. Furthermore, mechanistic studies show that the key active species is a pentagonal ruthenacycle complex.

Abstract:A highly efficient Ru(II)-catalyzed regio- and stereospecific hydro-oxycarbonylation of unsymmetrical internal alkynes bearing a difunctional 2-pyridyloxy directing group with carboxylic acids has been developed, which provides allylic (Z)-enol esters in good to excellent yields with a broad substrate scope under mild conditions. The difunctional directing group can be diversely derivatized, particularly undergoing allylic substitution with various nucleophiles to afford β-functionalized (Z)-enol esters without directing groups.

Abstract:The regioselective synthesis of beta,gamma-unsaturated ketones from terminal alkynes is achieved by cooperative action of tris(acetonitrile)pentamethylcyclopentadieneruthenium hexafluorophosphate [Cp*Ru(NCMe)(3)(+) PF6-] and para-toluenesulfonic acid catalysts. These allyl ketones undergo direct regioselective hydroarylation/Friedel-Crafts reaction to introduce an electron-rich aryl group at the gamma-position in the presence of ligand-free silver triflate (AgOTf) catalyst. Both catalytic reactions take place with atom economy and provide an alternative to the synthesis of a variety of allyl ketones and gamma-arylated ketones.

Abstract:The [Ru(p‐cymene)Cl2]2‐catalyzed reaction of 2‐arylpyridines with 1‐aryl‐2‐vinylpyrrolidines is carried out in CF3CH2OH at 40 °C in the presence of KOAc, affording ortho‐C‐H allylation products of arenes in 29% to 99% yields and 1:0.7 to 1:5.4 Z/E ratio. The amino groups remain in the product molecules. The protocol suits for a wide scope of substrates and tolerates functional groups including alkyl, aryl, MeO, F, Cl, Br, OCF3, and CF3 groups.

Abstract:Application of an oxidative amination reagent (di-tert-butyldiaziridinone) to the Ru-3(CO)(12)-catalyzed ortho-selective C-Ar-H amination reaction is described. This strategy shows good functional group compatibility with various phenyl-substituted N-heterocycles, including biologically active substrates, thus providing synthetic potential for this methodology. Mechanistic studies showed that the reaction process involves an octahedral ruthenium species, and the carbon monoxide ligand plays a crucial role in the C-H activation.
