Abstract:The mechanisms and chemo- and regioselectivities of Ru(II)-catalyzed decarboxylative C-H alkenylation of aryl carboxylic acids with alkynes were investigated with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The catalytic cycle involves sequential carboxylate-directed C-H activation, alkyne insertion, decarboxylation and protonation. The facile tether-assisted decarboxylation step directs the intermediate toward the desired decarboxylative alkenylation, instead of typical annulation and double alkenylation pathways. The decarboxylation barrier is very sensitive to the tether length, and only the seven-membered ring intermediate can selectively undergo the designed decarboxylation, suggesting a tether-dependent chemoselectivity. This tether-dependent chemoselectivity also applies to the alkyl tethers. In addition, the polarity of solvent is found to control the chemoselectivity between the decarboxylative alkenylation and [4 + 2] annulation. Solvent with low polarity (toluene) favors the decarboxylation pathway, leading to the decarboxylative alkenylation. Solvent with high polarity (methanol) favors the ionic stepwise C-O reductive elimination pathway, leading to the [4 + 2] annulation. To understand the origins of regioselectivity with asymmetric alkynes, the distortion/interaction analysis was applied to the alkyne insertion transition states, and led to a predictive frontier molecular orbital model. The asymmetric alkynes selectively use the terminal with the larger HOMO orbital coefficient to form the C-C bond in the insertion step.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)‐catalyzed regioselective C−H annulation and alkenylation of 2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes have been developed. The cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalytic system containing FeCl3 additive enables annulation of 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes, providing efficient access to 5,7‐diarylated 2‐quinolinones. The reaction pathway can be switched to alkenylation with [Cp*RhCl2]2 as the catalyst, NaOAc as the additive and HOAc as the solvent, affording C6‐alkenylated 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones in high yields. These protocols accommodate a wide range of substrates with good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:Vinyl chlorides can be effectively prepared via alkyne hydrochlorination catalyzed by the [Cp*RuCl(cod)]/PPh3 system. The reaction mechanism has been elucidated by density functional theory calculations. Different from the previously proposed pathway (oxidative addition, alkyne coordination, H-/Cl-transfer via inner addition, and reductive elimination), the calculation results indicate that HCl favorably attacks the alkyne stepwise from the outer coordination sphere of the Ru center. The reaction is essentially the electrophilic addition of HCl to alkyne. Therefore, the proton tends to attack the more negatively charged carbon of the C–C triple bond, leading to the Markovnikov product.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Catalyst innovation lies at the heart of transition-metal-catalyzed reaction development. In this article, we have explored the C(sp 2 )—H alkenylation activity with novel spirocyclic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based cyclometalated ruthenium pincer catalyst system, SNRu-X . After screening catalyst and condition, a high valent Ru(IV) dioxide (X = O 2 ) species has demonstrated superior reactivity in the catalytic alkenylation of aromatic and olefinic C-H bonds with unactivated alkenyl bromides and triflates. This reaction has achieved the easy construction of a wide range of (hetero)aromatic alkenes and dienes, in good to excellent yields with exclusive selectivity. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction may proceed through a single electron transfer (SET) triggered oxidative addition, by doing so, providing valuable complementary to classical alke-nylation reactions that are dependent on activated alkenyl precursors.

Abstract:The asymmetric cross-coupling reaction is developed as a straightforward strategy toward 1,1-diaryl alkanes, which are a key skeleton in a series of natural products and bioactive molecules in recent years. Here we report an enantioselective benzylic C(sp(3))-H bond arylation via photoredox/nickel dual catalysis. Sterically hindered chiral biimidazoline ligands are designed for this asymmetric cross-coupling reaction. Readily available alkyl benzenes and aryl bromides with various functional groups tolerance can be easily and directly transferred to useful chiral 1,1-diaryl alkanes including pharmaceutical intermediates and bioactive molecules. This reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions without the use of external redox reagents.

Abstract:Two new [12]metallacrown-6 compounds, [M(II)(6)(SMe)(12)] [M = Ru (1), Zn (2)], were constructed from a dimethyl sulfoxide decomposed methylthiol product to doubly bridged metal centers. The Ru(II) compound can prompt alkenylation reactions of phenylpyridines with alkynes to generate monoalkenylated arylpyridines in moderate yields with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity.

Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed meta-C-H functionalization reactions are still rare. Herein, we report the first example of Rh(III)-catalyzed meta-C-H alkenylation with disubstituted alkynes directed by a U-shaped nitrile template. Exclusive regio-selectivity has been achieved using unsymmetrical aryl and alkyl-disubstituted alkynes to afford synthetically valuable trisubstituted olefins. Propargyl alcohols are also compatible, affording complex allylic alcohols. Notably, transition metal-catalyzed meta-alkenylation with alkynes has not been successful with Pd catalysts.

Abstract:The [Ru(p‐cymene)Cl2]2‐catalyzed reaction of 2‐arylpyridines with 1‐aryl‐2‐vinylpyrrolidines is carried out in CF3CH2OH at 40 °C in the presence of KOAc, affording ortho‐C‐H allylation products of arenes in 29% to 99% yields and 1:0.7 to 1:5.4 Z/E ratio. The amino groups remain in the product molecules. The protocol suits for a wide scope of substrates and tolerates functional groups including alkyl, aryl, MeO, F, Cl, Br, OCF3, and CF3 groups.

Abstract:Novel C-C bond cleavage of secondary alcohols through Rh(III)-catalyzed beta-carbon elimination directed by a pyridinyl group is reported. A five-membered rhodacycle is proposed as a key intermediate, which undergoes further alkenylation with various olefins. This novel transformation shows high efficiency along with excellent selectivity in mild conditions. A wide range of functionalities are compatible. This study offers a new strategy to carry out C-C bond activation.

Abstract:Through the use of [Ru(bpy)3Cl2] (bpy=2,2-bipyridine) and [Ir(ppy)3] (ppy=phenylpyridine) as photocatalysts, we have achieved the first example of visible-light photocatalytic radical alkenylation of various -carbonyl alkyl bromides and benzyl bromides to furnish -vinyl carbonyls and allylbenzene derivatives, prominent structural elements of many bioactive molecules. Specifically, this transformation is regiospecific and can tolerate primary, secondary, and even tertiary alkyl halides that bear -hydrides, which can be challenging with traditional palladium-catalyzed approaches. The key initiation step of this transformation is visible-light-induced single-electron reduction of CBr bonds to generate alkyl radical species promoted by photocatalysts. The following carboncarbon bond-forming step involves a radical addition step rather than a metal-mediated process, thereby avoiding the undesired -hydride elimination side reaction. Moreover, we propose that the Ru and Ir photocatalysts play a dual role in the catalytic system: they absorb energy from the visible light to facilitate the reaction process and act as a medium of electron transfer to activate the alkyl halides more effectively. Overall, this photoredox catalysis method opens new synthetic opportunities for the efficient alkenylation of alkyl halides that contain -hydrides under mild conditions.

Abstract:A copper-catalyzed highly anti-selective radical 1,2-alkylarylation of terminal alkynes with aryl boronic acids and alkyl bromides has been established. Abstract:A systematic theoretical study of rhodium-catalyzed allylic alkylation reactions using hard benzylzinc nucleophiles was performed. The mechanisms were investigated in detail together with the regioselectivity associated with the branched and linear pathways and the intriguing anti - (as opposed to syn -) diastereoselectivity of this process. The preferred mechanism was found to be initiated by the oxidative addition of the rhodium(I) complex followed by migration of the benzyl nucleophile to the Rh center. The subsequent nucleophilic addition of a benzyl group to the η 3 -allyl moiety takes place via the formation of a new C–C bond to afford the final allylic benzylation product. This proposed mechanism readily explains the experimental observation that the products obtained from such reactions are branched (as opposed to linear) with an anti -configuration (as opposed to a syn -configuration). This work also provides reasons for the lower regioselectivity observed for a OCO 2 t Bu leaving group or cyanophenyl/secondary amide substituents at the 4-position of the substrate. The present study is expected to assist in the rational design of potential substrates for analogous reactions.

Abstract:Brønsted base catalyzed C-C bond formation reactions have been extensively utilized as reliable, efficient, and atom economical methods in organic synthesis. However, the electrophiles were mostly limited to polar ones such as imines, carbonyl compounds, α,β-unsaturated compounds, styrenes and conjugated dienes. The use of α-alkenes as electrophiles in the C-C bond formation reactions always needs transition metal catalysts. Herein, we reported an alkyl lithium-catalyzed benzylic C-H bond addition of alkyl pyridines to α-alkenes. The alkyl lithium catalyst displayed quite different selectivity from those of transition metal catalysts.
