Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is an accelerator-based facility. The accelerator of CSNS consists of a low energy 'iliac, a Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) and two beam transport lines. The overall physics design of CSNS accelerator is described, including the design principle, the choice of the main parameters and design of each part of accelerators. The key problems of the physics design, such as beam loss and control, are also discussed. The interface between the different parts of accelerator, as well as between accelerator and target, are introduced.

Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is the first accelerator-based pulsed neutron source in China. Its accelerators are made up of an 80 MeV H − linac, a Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) and two beam transport lines. RCS accumulates and accelerates protons to the design energy of 1.6 GeV, and extracts high energy beam to strike the target. The overview of RCS is presented, and the key problems of the physics design are discussed. The two beam transport lines, from linac to RCS and from RCS to the target, are also introduced.

Abstract:Construction of China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) has been launched in September 2011. CSNS accelerator will provide 100kW proton beam on a target at beam energy of 1.6GeV. It consists of an 80MeV H^{−} linac and 1.6GeV rapid cycling synchrotron. Based on the prototyping experience, CSNS linac, including the front end and four DTL tanks, has finalized the design and started procurement. In this paper, we will first present an outline of the CSNS accelerator in its design and construction plan. Then the major prototyping results of the linac will be presented. Finally the linac construction progress in recent will be updated.

Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is an accelerator based multidiscipline user facility planned to be constructed in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. The CSNS complex consists of an negative hydrogen linear accelerator, a rapid cycling proton synchrotron accelerating the beam to 1.6GeV energy, a solid tungsten target station, and instruments for spallation neutron applications. The facility operates at 25Hz repetition rate with an initial design beam power of 120kW and is upgradeable to 500kW. The primary challenge is to build a robust and reliable user's facility with upgrade potential at a fraction of “world standard” cost. We report the status, design, R&D, and upgrade outlook including applications using spallation neutron, muon, fast neutron, and proton, as well as related programs including medical therapy and accelerator-driven sub-critical reactor (ADS) programs for nuclear waste transmutation.

Abstract:CSNS accelerator mainly consists of an H linac and a proton rapid cycling synchrotron. It is designed to accelerate proton beam pulses to 1.6GeV kinetic energy at 25 Hz repetition rate, striking a solid metal target to produce spallation neutrons. The accelerator is designed to deliver a beam power of 120 kW with the upgrade capability up to 500 kW, The CSNS accelerator is the first large-scale, high-power accelerator project to be constructed in China and thus we are facing a lot of challenges in some key technologies. A series of R&D for major prototypes have being conducted since 2006, including an H ion source, DTL tank, RF power supply for the linac, injection/extraction magnets and its pulse power supplies, dipole and quadrupole prototype magnets in the ring and its power supplies, ferrite-loaded RF prototype cavity, ceramic vacuum chamber, control and some beam diagnostics. This paper will briefly introduce the design and R&D status of the CSNS accelerator.

Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is an accelerator-based multidisciplinary user facility constructed in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. The injector of the CSNS accelerator consists of 4 conventional Alvarez DTL tanks, and it accelerates an H- beam from 3 MeV to 80 MeV. There is a series of accelerator physics and technology challenges in the DTL design and construction. The transverse focusing is arranged in a FFDD lattice utilizing a newly developed electromagnetic quadrupole magnets. The DTL cavity is copper-plated to enhance the electrical conductivity of the tank inner RF surface. There is not any space for steering magnet installing in the 36 m long DTL section, which leads to a rather high precision requirements for fabrication, installation and RF tuning. Benefited from the advanced fabrication technology and optimized tuning strategy, the CSNS DTL shows an excellent performance in the beam commissioning. The beam is successfully accelerated to 80 MeV with nearly 100% transmissions. The detailed physics and cavity design are described, construction and beam commissioning results are also shown.

Abstract:China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is the first neutron source facility in developing countries. it includes a powerful linear proton accelerator, a rapid circling synchrotron, a target station and three neutron instruments <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">[1]</sup> . As one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects in China, CSNS is expected to have positive effects in promoting the sciences, high-tech development and national security. Klystron power supply of CSNS is an important part of linac. High-voltage pulse generator is used for the mod_anode of Klystron. High-voltage pulse generator is composed of 400Hz series-resonant DC high-voltage power supply and solid state modulator. it includes variable frequency power supply (50Hz converted to 400Hz), step-up transformer (0.5kV-6kV), 400Hz series-resonant L/C, energy storage capacitor bank and high-voltage pulse modulator. This paper introduces the structure and principle of the high-voltage pulse generator, Focusing on the introduction of high-voltage pulse generator control system, test and operation of high-voltage pulse generator.

Abstract:China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), which is under construction, is a large scientific facility dedicated mainly for multi-disciplinary research on material characterization using neutron scattering techniques. The CSNS Phase-I accelerator will deliver a proton beam with an energy of 1.6 GeV and a pulse repetition rate of 25Hz to a tungsten target, and the beam power is 100kW. A white neutron source using the back-streaming neutrons through the incoming proton beam channel was proposed and is under construction. The back-streaming neutrons which are very intense and have good time structure are very suitable for nuclear data measurements. The white neutron source includes an 80-m neutron beam line, two experimental halls, and also six different types of spectrometers. The physics design of the beam line is presented in this paper, which includes beam optics and beam characterization simulations, with the emphasis on obtaining extremely low background. The first-batch experiments on nuclear data measurements are expected to be conducted in late 2017.

Abstract:An Atmospheric Neutron Irradiation Spectrometer (ANIS) with a neutron spectrum resembling that of atmospheric neutrons was physically designed at the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The general layout and the main components of ANIS are presented and discussed. The beam specifications including the atmospheric neutron spectrum, neutron flux, beam spot and beam uniformity are obtained via Monte Carlo simulations. Charged particles and photons were also analyzed. Simulation results indicate that ANIS is a world-class neutron irradiation facility based on proton accelerator, with very distinctive neutron beam quality and wide range adjustment capability. The first neutron beam will be supplied in the end of 2021. It will supply a powerful platform for the accelerated Single Event Effect (SEE) test that is used in aviation and terrestrial electronics, in compliance with the requirements of the associated international standards.

Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source is an accelerator-based user facility for neutron, proton, muon applications and so on. The designed proton beam power is 100 kW for the first phase. Overall, the scope of accelerator control system covers four parts, the global systems, the device layer local controls and remote controls, the high-level applications and services and the integration of conventional facilities. The principle guideline is to adopt as many as possible matured technologies and commercial products in the design and implementation. The control system is based on Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System. VME64x bus is chosen for timing system and fast protection system. PLCs and embedded industrial computers are used in the device layer slow controls. Control System Studio is adopted as the high-level applications. Blade server-based virtualization platform is deployed for the computer system. The accelerator control system was completed in September 2017 and then transited to routine operations. The design, implementation and operation of the accelerator control system are described in this paper.

Abstract:China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) target power will upgrade to 500 kW(CSNS-II) from 300kW, energy gain of H-Linac will up to 300 MeV from 80 MeV using about 50 superconductor cavities. LLRF is an important device for controlling the amplitude and phase of the SRF cavity field to be less than 0.6% and 0.6 deg. The parameters and requirements for CSNS-II Linac LLRF are presented here. The preliminary design work and algorithm verification progress and results at C-ADS Injector-I are introduced.

Abstract:The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), located in Dongguan city, Guangdong Province, is the country’s first and only spallation neutron source. It is also the fourth spallation neutron source in the world. Meanwhile, it is one of the core large-scale scientific facilities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Comprehensive National Science Center. The China Spallation Neutron Source phase II (CSNS-II) upgrade design will increase the total beam power from 100 kW to 500 kW and boost the beam energy from 80 MeV to 300 MeV in the linac by adding a superconducting linear accelerator to the existing accelerator complex. The double spoke resonator is used in the energy range of 80 MeV to 165 MeV. At present, the double spoke resonator (DSR) prototypes have been designed, fabricated and tested. The two prototypes underwent vertical testing five times, resulting in a maximum accelerating gradient of 15 MV/m. Additionally, the value of Q 0 exceeded 4 × 1 0 10 at an E a c c of 7.3 MV/m.

Abstract:Using the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) linac as the injector, a 500 MeV proton synchrotron is proposed for multidisciplinary application, such as biology, material and proton therapy. The synchrotron will deliver proton beam with energy from 80 MeV to 500 MeV. A compact lattice design was worked out, and all the important beam dynamics issues were investigated. The 80 MeV H- beam is stripped and injected into the synchrotron by using multi-turn injection. In order to continuously extraction the proton with small beam loss, the achromatic structure is proposed and slow extraction method with RF knock-out is adopted and optimized.

Abstract:The design and performance of the new Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge are described. CNCS is a direct geometry inelastic time-of-flight spectrometer, designed to cover essentially the same energy and momentum transfer ranges as IN5 at ILL, LET at ISIS, DCS at NIST, TOFTOF at FRM2, AMATERAS at J-PARC, PHAROS at LANSCE and NEAT at HZB, at similar energy resolution. Measured values of key figures such as neutron flux at sample position and energy resolution are compared between measurements and ray tracing Monte Carlo simulations, and good agreement (better than 20% of absolute numbers) has been achieved. The instrument performs very well in the cold and thermal neutron energy ranges, and promises to become a workhorse for the neutron scattering community for quasielastic and inelastic scattering experiments.

Abstract:We report the recent progress on the conceptual design of the target station and neutron scattering spectrometers for the Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The CSNS target station will be constructed with three parts: tungsten targets cooled by heavy water, Be/Fe reflectors and Fe/high-density-iron-aggregate-concrete shields. There will be 3 WING moderators: water (300 K), liquid methane (100 K) and liquid hydrogen (20 K), and 18 horizontal neutron channels for neutron scattering spectrometers. The Monte Carlo simulation shows that the optimized ratio of height to width of the target cross-section is ~1:2.5. With a nuclear power of 100 kW, the pulsed neutron flux is 2.4 × 1016 cm?2·s?1 for a 40 mm× 100 mm× 10 mm × 40 target stack. The emitted heat is about 47 kJ/s, the target temperature is somewhat higher than 90°C with a normal cooling efficiency, and the strain should be lower than 0.2 mm. Initially 5 typical spectrometers are chosen to be constructed, including a high intensity powder diffractometer, a high resolution powder diffractometer, a small angle scattering spectrometer, a reflectometer and a direct geometry inelastic neutron scattering spectrometer. These spectrometers can cover more than 80 % of the neutron scattering applications.
