Abstract:An in situ synthesis method for carbon-coated LiFePO4 powders has been investigated in detail using inexpensive FePO4 as an iron source and polypropylene as a reductive agent and carbon source. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis of the precursor mixture indicated that the pyrolysis of polypropylene and the combination reaction of LiFePO4 could be processed synchronously at a synthesis temperature between 500 and 800 degrees C. X-ray diffraction analyses and scanning electron microscopy observations showed that LiFePO4/C composites with fine particle sizes and homogeneous carbon coating could be directly synthesized by the in situ method. The electrochemical performances of the carbon-coated LiFePO4 powder synthesized at 700 degrees C were evaluated using an electrochemical model cell by galvanostatic charge/discharge and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The in situ synthesized LiFePO4/C composite had a high electrochemical capacity of 164 mA h g(-1) at the 0.1C rate, and possessed a favorable capacity cycling maintenance at the 0.3 and 0.5C rates. The good electrochemical properties of the LiFePO4/C composite are suggested to originate from the good crystallinity, the fine particle sizes, and the efficient electronic conductive coating layer of the material. Abstract:Electrical energy storage devices of high power and energy densities are of vital importance in a wide range of large applications, including electric and hybrid electric vehicles, military portable energy sources, and civic power stations. Although lithium-ion batteries possess the highest energy density among all types of rechargeable batteries, their power densities fall far below the requirements needed by the high-power applications in which the batteries must be able to charge and discharge in very rapid cycles. Using nanoparticles could significantly increase the shuttling rate of lithium-ion because of the reduced diffusion length and increased surface area. However, nanoparticles of most transition metal oxides suffer from side reactions with electrolytes, resulting in poor electrochemical stability at high voltage. LiFePO4 nanoparticles are more attractive because of their relative low voltage and better electrochemical stability. In applications, LiFePO4 nanoparticles are usually agglomerated with significant distributions in size (a few tens to a few hundred nanometers) and shape (irregular or spherical particles), which may affect the overall electrochemical performance of the resulting cathodes. In addition, an extra carbon coating step is required for improving the electrical conductivity of LiFePO4.

Abstract:Lithium iron phosphate coated with carbon (LiFePO4/C) was synthesized by improved solid-state reaction using comparatively lower temperature and fewer sintering time. The carbon came from citric acid, which acted as a new carbon source. It was characterized by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X ray diffractometer (XRD), Element Analysis (EA) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). We also studied the electrochemical properties of the material. The first discharge capacity of the LiFePO4/C is 121 mAh·g−1 at 10 mA·g−1, at room temperature. When the current density increased to 100 mA·g−1, the first discharge capacity decreased to 110 mAh·g−1 and retained 95% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles. The LiFePO4/C obtained shows a good electrochemical capacity and cycle ability at a large current density.

Abstract:Double carbon coated LiFePO4 materials were prepared by a simple two-step solid-state carbonthermal method.The samples were characterized by SEM and X-ray diffraction and evaluated as cathode materials for Li-ion battery.Results showed that the carbon layer coated on the FePO4 precursor effectively prevented the crystal growth of LiFePO4 particles in the subsequent calcination process,facilitating particle size control.The samples exhibited a reversible specific capacity of around 150.0 mAh/g at 0.1 C.The capacity retains more than 96% after 50 cycles,indicating superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:LiFePO4/C composite has been synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry and carbon content analysis. The XRD results showed the synthesized LiFePO 4/C was ordered olivine structure. The carbon brought about two advantages: (i) an optimized particle size of LiFePO4, and (ii) a uniform distribution of fine carbon in the product. The existence of the fine carbon in LiFePO4/C composite led to high electric conductivity and high lithium ion diffusivity. The cathode material demonstrates a charge/discharge flat voltage at about 3.4V (Vs Li+/Li). Especially the active material with 5.29% carbon showed very good electrochemical performance delivering about initial 162.0mAhg-1 specific capacity at 0.1C rate and had excellent cyclic capability at large current rate (510mA/g) with 142.0mAh/g specific capacity.

Abstract:Carbon-coated LiFePO4 cathode material was synthesized by the solid state reaction method.Both the single carbon source and complex carbon source were employed for the preparation of the LiFePO4 material.ECT,XRD,SEM and CV tester were used for the characterizations of the LiFePO4 material,and the effects of carbon source on the electrochemical properties of the LiFePO4 material were studied.The results show that,compared with the LiFePO4 material made from other carbon sources,the carbon content of the LiFePO4 material prepared from the complex carbon source consisting of hexamethylene tetramine and citric acid is reduced by about 40%,while their initial discharge capacity and retention rate after 20 cycles are increased by about 20% and 2%,respectively.And,the lithium-ion battery fabricated from this LiFePO4 cathode material exhibits good self-modification capability.

Abstract:LiFePO4/(Ag+C) composite cathodes with a new type of nano-sized carbon webs were synthesized by two methods of an aqueous co-precipitation and a sol–gel process, respectively. Simultaneous thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis indicates that the crystallization temperature of LiFePO4 is about 455–466 °C, which is close to the pyrolysis temperature of polypropylene, 460 °C. The silver and carbon co-modifying does not affect the olivine structure of LiFePO4 but improves its kinetics in terms of discharge capacity and rate capability. Discharge capacities were improved from 153.4 mA h g−1 of LiFePO4/C to 160.5 mA h g−1and 162.1 mA h g−1 for LiFePO4/(Ag+C) cathodes synthesized by the co-precipitation and sol–gel methods, respectively. The possible reasons for the small difference in discharge capacity of two LiFePO4/(Ag+C) cathodes were discussed. AC impedance measurements show that the Ag+C co-modification decreases the charge transfer resistance of LiFePO4/(Ag+C) cathodes.

Abstract:Regardless of high capacity and stability during lithium extraction, LiFePO4 materials have difficulty in the applications for high electrical density because of low electrical conductivities. In order to optimize this problem, we synthesized carbon coated LiFePO4 by adding humic acid using solid state reaction method. We characterized the synthesized compounds via the crystallinity, the valence states of Fe ions, and their shapes. We found the carbon coating using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). We also found that the iron ion is substituted from 3+ to 2+ through XPS measurement. We showed that the carbon coating increased the electrochemical behavior by measuring the charge-discharge characteristics.

Abstract:A novel hydrothermal stripping technique is developed to synthesize pure LiFePO4 and LiFePO4/C cathode materials. The pure sample is directly synthesized by the cation exchange between the organic phase which is prepared with FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O and naphthenic acid, and aqueous phase prepared with H3PO4 and LiOH. SEM exhibits that the primary sizes of the well-distributed LiFePO4 and LiFePO4/C particles are about 150 nm and 100 nm in diameter, respectively. TEM indicates the LiFePO4/C is uniformly coated with a carbon layer about 2.7 nm in size. The as-prepared LiFePO4 exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 135.5 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, and the LiFePO4/C composite sintered at 650 degrees C for 4 h exhibits the best electrode properties with discharge capacities of 151.7, 154.8, 149.8 and 139.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C and 1.0 C rates, respectively. Abstract:An inorganic and non-toxic compounds combination of FeCl2·4H2O, Li2CO3 and H3PO4 was chosen to synthesize homogeneous nano-structured LiFePO4/C composite material via a simplified sol–gel route. The dependency of the physicochemical properties and the corresponding electrochemical responses on the residual carbon content were investigated in details. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis confirmed the feasibility of preparing pure LiFePO4 phase via this approach. With increasing amount of residual carbon, the particles size gradually decreased and the bulk electrical conductivity monotonically increased. However, the higher level of residual carbon would bring disadvantageous impact on the lithium ion diffusion. Due to high electrical conductivity, controlled particle size and suitable microstructure, the sample with 4.5 wt.% residual carbon exhibited stable cycling performance and delivered high discharge capacity of 163, 119 and 108 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C, 5 C and 10 C, respectively.

Abstract:Core-shell LiFePO4@C composites were synthesized successfully from FePO4/C precursor using the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the reducing agent, followed by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) assisted solid-state reaction in the presence of Li2CO3. Some physical and chemical properties of the products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman, SEM, TEM techniques. The effect of morphology and electrochemical properties of the composites were thoroughly investigated. XRD patterns showed that LiFePO4 has an order olivine structure with space group of Pnma. TEM micrographs exhibited that the LiFePO4 particles encapsulated with 3-nm thick carbon shells. The powders were homogeneous with grain size of about 0.8μm. Compared with those synthesized by traditional organic carbon source mixed method, LiFePO4@C composite synthesized by CVD method exhibited better discharge capacity at initial 155.4 and 135.8mAhg−1 at 0.1C and 1C rate, respectively. It is revealed that the carbon layer coated on the surface of LiFePO4 and the amorphous carbon wrapping and connecting the particles enhanced the electronic conductivity and rate performances of the cathode materials.
In-situ carbonation synthesis of LiFePO4/C and its electrochemical properties with ferrous gluconate

Abstract:LiFePO4/C composite materials were prepared by solid-state reaction with ferrous gluconate as carbon source and partial iron source.The structure and morphology of sample materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electromicro scopy.The electrochemical performances of composites were measured by electrochemical workstation and charge-discharge test system.The highest discharge capacity of LiFePO4/C composite with 4.75% carbon coating sintered at 650℃ for 10h was 161.6,147.2 and 123.3mAh/g at 0.1,0.2 and 1C rate,respectively.There was no fade of discharge capacity after being charge-discharge for 50 cycles at 1C rate.The results showed that due to the strong chemical bonds between gluconate and iron ions,a uniform layer of carbon film was formed on the surface of particles and some filamentous amorphous carbon was formed between the particles after sintering.The particle growth was inhibited during sintering and a complete conduc-tive network was formed due to the effective carbon coating,hence the utilization of active materials was im-proved and the electrochemical properties were enhanced.

Abstract:In this paper, carbon-coated LiFePO4 nano-hollow spheres (LFP@C HSs) were successfully synthesized using lithium phosphate (Li3PO4) nano-spheres as templates and precursors. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) demonstrated the crystal structure of LFP@C HSs. The morphology of LFP@C HSs was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Compared with LiFePO4 nano-hollow spheres without carbon coating (LFP HSs) and commercial LiFePO4 (commercial LFP), the rate performance of LFP@C HSs has been evidently improved by carbon coating and hollow structure. At the highest rate of 5 C, LFP@C HSs still maintains a capacity of 101.4 mA h−1 g−1. LFP@C HSs show excellent cycling performance at a current density of 1 C, maintaining 92.5% of the initial capacity after 500 cycles.

Abstract:A novel composite consisted of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon-coated Li2FeSiO4 nanoparticles (Li2FeSiO4/CNTs/C) has been successfully synthesized by using spray drying technology and carbon chemical vapor deposition method. The Li2FeSiO4 nanoparticles are dispersed homogeneously in CNTs network and assembled as micro-sized porous spherical particles. Such special composite structure constructs an efficient Li+ and electron channel, which significantly enhance the Li+ diffusion coefficient and reduced the charge transfer resistance, hence may lead to exhibit high specific capacity and excellent rate performances. The Li2FeSiO4/CNTs/C composite exhibits both high initial discharge capacity and excellent cycling stability (189.2mAhg−1 at 0.1C and 71.6mAhg−1 at 5C). We believe that adding CNTs and using carbon chemical vapor deposition are effective ways to improve the electrochemical performance of Li2FeSiO4 cathode material.

Abstract:Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) for lithium-ion batteries is considered as perfect cathode material for various military applications.Carbon coating has a great influence on the properties of lithium iron phosphate. In this paper, the effects of in-situ carbon coating and non-in-situ carbon coating on the structure and properties of lithium iron phosphate were analyzed.For LiFePO4/C synthesized by carbon coating, no matter it is non-in-situ coating or in-situ coating, it can improve the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4. In this paper, ascorbic acid was used as the carbon source, and the sample coating layers formed by in-situ carbon coating and non-in-situ carbon coating were 10nm and 20nm respectively. Through the electrochemical measurements, In situ carbon coated and non-in-situ carbon coated lithium iron phosphate, the specific capacity of charge and discharge for the first time reached 125 mAhg-1 and 112 mAh∙g-1 respectively at the rate of 0.1C..Meanwhile, comparing the two coating methods, The structure and properties of in-situ carbon coating are better than those of non-in-situ carbon coating.

Abstract:To improve the performance of battery cathode materials that consist of carbonaceous organic material, carbon coatings on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4/C) materials were synthesized by different carbon sources. LiFePO4/C was synthesized by a combination method of sol–gel and gas-phase diffused permeation. LiFeO4/C materials were prepared by coating different carbon contents. High-performance composite materials were prepared by combining carbon with element doped by two modified methods. The elements of Fe and C came from Fe3+ and sucrose, glucose, citric acid. Thermogravimetry–differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), cycle voltammetry (CV), and charge–discharge test were used to characterize and test the surface morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance. The results show that LiFePO4/C synthesized with sucrose has higher specific discharge capacity than the other materials. The specific discharge capacity of this material is 84.27 mAh·g−1. The capacity retention could attain 94 % of the initial discharge capacity after 30 cycles, showing good electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Carbon-coated LiCoPO4 submicron particles have been successfully synthesized by combining a facile hydroxide precipitation and the solid-state reaction method. The submicron particles and carbon-coated structure are revealed by scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy with selected area electron diffraction measurements. The intial and 30th discharge capacity of the LiCoPO4 nanoparticle electrodes at 0.2 C is 108.9 and 66.6 mAh g(-1), respectively. Abstract:Three kinds of LiFePO 4 materials, mixed with carbon (as LiFePO 4 /C), doped with Ti (as Li 0.99 Ti 0.01 FePO 4 ), and treated both ways (as Li 0.99 Ti 0.01 FePO 4 /C composite), were synthesized via ball milling by solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure and electrochemical behavior of the materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction, SEM, TEM, cyclic voltammetry, and charge/discharge cycle measurements. It was found that the electrochemical behavior of LiFePO 4 could be increased by carbon coating and Ti-doping methods. Among the materials, Li 0.99 Ti 0.01 FePO 4 /C composite presents the best electrochemical behavior, with an initial discharge capacity of 154.5 mAh/g at a discharge rate of 0.2 C, and long charge/discharge cycle life. After 120 cycles, its capacity remains at 92% of the initial capacity. The Li 0.99 Ti 0.01 FePO 4 /C composite developed here can be used as the cathode material for lithium ion batteries.
