Abstract:I begin by chronicling the introduction of Marx’s philosophy into China, its influence on a few individuals including Mao Zedong, and the remarkably rapid rise of Marxism, or Marxism/Leninism, as the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party and eventually of the government after the defeat of the Guomintang. I then devote a comparatively brief section to Mao’s thought and leap forward, so to speak, to the ideological situation of the present as I see it, focusing on the three issues of religion, the ‘free market’, and international relations. There are very obvious tensions involved in the whole idea of Communism or Marxism with Chinese characteristics. I analyze them as well, I hope, as an outsider is able to do. But it seems clear to me that there are few if any ‘insiders’ who are able fully to resolve the tensions, either. Meanwhile, the Communist Party flag, featuring the hammer and sickle, flies proudly throughout the country.

Abstract:In an article in the October 1967 issue of Foreign Affairs, former vice president Richard Nixon advocated a more active US foreign policy toward China, declaring" Th ere is no place on this small planet for a billion of its potentially most able people to live in ang-ry lsolation."! During the next several years, the perception of a China insulated from the outside world would receive confirmation as the country spiraled further into the Cultural Revolution maelstrom at home and engaged in conflicts with both the United States and the Soviet Union abroad. In science, technology, and education, almost all universities and research institutes were shut down, international scientific interactions ceased, and importation of foreign journals and books stopped. Yet less than five years later Nixon, as president, would land in Beijing, and a new era in the history of the Cold War and in China's scientific relations with the rest of the world would begin.In this chapter I will sketch, in very general terms, how the Cold War reshaped China's scientific enterprise, especially its transnational character. The Cold War will be understood here not as a straightforward bipolar US-Soviet competition, but rather as a series of triangular US-Soviet-Chinese geopolitical interactions with alternating periods of alliance and hostility as seen from the Chinese perspective." Abstract:Abstract There are three overlapping objectives in the article. The first objective is to present three different Marxist perspectives, while focusing on the interpretation of the base/superstructure dialectic which is the key to the understanding of Marxian political economy. The second objective is to make sense of the first and second “Cold Wars” based on the different interpretations of the base/superstructure dialectic. The last objective is to reassert the materialist essence of the base/superstructure dialectic by evoking Marx and his concepts of “Labor” and “Capital”. The three different perspectives are analyzed based on this reassertion. Through these three objectives, two deductions were made: the first deduction is that scientific Marxism requires the acknowledgement of the overdetermination of the economic base (its dominance in the last instance) in the analysis of abstractions, empirical and historical data. The “totality of the relations of production” within the economic base appears abstract in nature, but it represents the ontological category of “Labor” that defines human history since its beginning. It has a transhistorical essence. Human beings work together to produce their basic needs, according to historically specific (abstract) relations of production. The superstructure determines the specificity of the relations of production; it defines the “historical” side of the relations of production in the economic base. In the era of capitalism, “Capital” (the private appropriation of social wealth) is the dominant relation that comes to dictate the “totality of the relations of the production” within the economic base, through the superstructure. Total capital is then the real “subject” of history, and all abstractions gain purpose and practicality based on the class struggle between Labor and Capital. The second deduction relates to real history explained on the basis of the first deduction. Looking at the historical development of the class struggle against monopoly-finance capital (the centralized and concentrated capital) in the 20th century, the First Cold War never truly ended even though the global socialist ideology became weak and the ideological struggle against the imperialist superstructure watered down.

Abstract:South Koreans hold against Japan to this day, according to Chung, the process of the Sino–South Korean normalization was special, and this special character was based on cultural bonds rather than on strategic calculations, economic considerations, or diplomatic maneuvers. The Cold War divided both China and Korea, creating two sets of relationships: the South Korea–Taiwan and North Korea–China alliances. Chung compares the manner in which Beijing and Seoul sought cooperation with each other at the expense of their longtime partners Pyongyang and Taipei. He concludes that in the process of improving relations Beijing showed more sensitivity to the reactions and feelings of North Korea than Seoul to Taiwan. Because of the unavailability of primary documents, Chung’s discussion of the decision-making process of the Sino–South Korean rapprochement is at times spotty and tentative. Some of his assertions are not supported by documents. For instance, he suggests that the Korean War veterans in China might have played a key role in blocking the progress of improving relations with South Korea, but he produces no evidence to support his suggestion. Liu Yazhou, a People’s Liberation Army officer, was included in the Small Group on South Korea, not because the civilian leadership wanted to make a gesture toward the military establishment but because Liu had been associated with a company that had economic ties with South Korea. In the Chinese political system, the Party dominates the military, and when the Party issues an order, the military follows. In sum, Chung’s book makes an important contribution to the study of Sino–South Korean relations in particular and the international relations in East Asia in general. Abstract:In their early history, the Chinese and Korean Communists had little contact with one another. However, similar fates brought them together, and some Korean revolutionaries in China voluntarily joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). After a futile effort to establish a Communist party in Korea, the Korean Communists shifted their attention to Chinese Manchuria. Under extremely difficult circumstances, different factions of the Korean Communist organizations either willingly or under force disbanded. However, after winning support from the Comintern, the CCP recruited a substantial number of Korean Communists. Thus, within a short period of time, the CCP expanded its strength in Manchuria. It also shouldered responsibility for assisting the Korean Communists in their efforts to establish their own party. In the aftermath of the September 18th Incident in 1931 the CCP Central Committee called for an armed struggle against the Japanese invaders. The Korean Communists in Manchuria became a force to be reckoned with. After the CCP gradually shifted the focus of its policy toward the War of Resistance against Japan, the Korean Communists in China became integrated into the CCP army.

Scholars have long recognized that an understanding of Moscow's role during the pivotal year and a half prior to the Xian Incident, and especially of possible conflict between the Comintern and Mao Zedong over the issue of a united front with Chiang Kai-shek, was essential to an evaluation of subsequent CCP-Soviet relations. This article is a contribution to our understanding of this important problem.

Abstract:China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution: Master Narratives and Post-Mao Counternarratives, edited by Woei Lien Chong. Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield, 2002. xix + 410 pp. US$80.00 (hardcover), US$34.95 (paperback). This volume explores the tension created by the Communist Party's 1991 decision to block public reassessments of the Cultural Revolution, at a time when the Red Guard generation, now in its 50s, has moved into positions of leadership throughout China's institutions. Inevitably, aging Red Guards have reflected upon the experiences of their youth, and are often dissatisfied with an official perspective that dismisses any positive aspect to their years of rebellion. Earlier versions of half of these chapters (on "Master Narratives") have appeared in China Information. These are supplemented by new essays on "Post-Mao Counternarratives". This is a very professional collection of essays. Standards of scholarship are high, and the essays are often provocative and informative. However, although reviewers do not judge books by their covers, consumers often do, so it is unfortunate that this volume's intellectual appeal is undermined by an unnecessarily ugly cover. Bernard J. ter Haar's chapter links the Cultural Revolution to a "demonological paradigm" in Chinese history. He traces the Cultural Revolution's management of violence to earlier practices, especially among the Taiping revolutionaries. The approach is idealist, leading to the odd speculation that modern China's stress on hygiene is a "replacement to fill the emptied semantic categories of the demonological paradigm" (p. 55), rather than a response to the poor quality of public sanitation. Ter Haar's explanation of the Cultural Revolution by way of ancient exorcisms fits poorly with the rest of the volume, which is overwhelmingly concerned with the Cultural Revolution's impact and later interpretations. Nick Knight undertakes to disentangle Mao from the movement which he initiated. Although many regard Mao as the puppet-master implementing a fake revolution of his own design, Knight argues that he was unable to control the movement. In contrast to most commentators, Knight does not treat the Cultural Revolution as a product of Mao's Utopian impulses. Instead, he interestingly argues that Mao's thought grew more pessimistic as the Cultural Revolution loomed, and as he replaced themes of harmony with those of struggle. Anne-Marie Brady examines China's small community of foreign experts from the Cultural Revolution's beginning through the 9th Party Congress in 1969. Rising nationalism turned xenophobic, making it difficult for foreign friends of China to support the movement without encountering a backlash. Many were treated as spies, and Chinese who were part of their personal networks were ill-treated. Some, of the experts were imprisoned, and others left China. At the lowest point, only 59 remained. Brady is nuanced in her handling of the factionalism and personal rivalries among these friends of China. Stefan Landsberger's chapter, "Deification of Mao", traces the Cultural Revolution through changes to the image of the Chairman. Most of the 27 Illustrations may be found in color on Landsberger's outstanding web site. Landsberger goes beyond poster images to include songs and other ritual aspects of the Mao cult. This chapter contains the book's clearest review of the history of the Cultural Revolution, and may be especially welcomed by newcomers. Only 124 novels were published during the Cultural Revolution. Lan Yang analyzes the 24 that have agrarian themes. …

Abstract:China’s policy toward the Korean Peninsula can be largely characterized as being to maintain “stable status quo”, and this has been a constant feature since the founding of the PRC in 1949. Even when China turned to the “Far Left” and encouraged revolutions in the Third World in the early 1960s, it did not however encourage North Korea to attack the South. Nevertheless, the reasons and objectives behind China’s foreign policy towards the Korean Peninsula to keep the “status quo”differed at different times. These differences in the same policy have been overlooked. Therefore, this paper attempts to highlight the different reasons that led to the PRC to maintain the same policy. Through a scrutiny of the Sino-North Korean and Sino-South Korean relationships, juxtaposing side by side a from historical perspective, this article will provide useful clues in better understanding China’s policy towards the Korean Peninsula and elucidate the surrounding international political context.

Abstract:The People's Republic of China, like the Chinese Communist Party that ruled it, was from its conception internationalist in premise and in promise. The PRC in its formative years would be Moscow's most faithful and self-sacrificing ally, a distinction earned in blood in Korea and by the fact that, unlike the East European “people's democracies,” the PRC's allegiance was not bought at gunpoint. This article researches one of the most ambitious international undertakings of that era: the effort to plan the development of half the world and to create a socialist world economy stretching from Berlin to Canton. What was China's role in this undertaking, and how did it shape the early PRC? How did this socialist world economy work (or not work)? How successfully internationalist was a project negotiated by sovereign (and Stalinist) states? Why did Mao Zedong ultimately destroy it, and with it, the dream of communist internationalism?

Abstract:In 1949 and 1950, three ethnic Korean divisions of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) returned to North Korea. While some historians have cited their return in terms of Chinese and Soviet encouragement for Kim Il Sung's invasion of South Korea, this article argues that this was simply an attempt to enhance North Korea's self-defence capabilities, rather than to invade South Korea. The rationales behind the Soviet and Chinese decisions are analysed here. The Soviet Union's viewpoint will be explained, taking into account the high degree of tension on the Peninsula in early 1949. The Chinese perspective will be examined vis-a-vis the close Sino-Korean relationship, China's domestic economic pressures, and requests by the Korean soldiers themselves. Furthermore, this paper argues that at no time did North Korea dispatch troops to Northeast China in order to help Chinese communists in the Chinese Civil War, showing the limits of both reciprocity and fraternal socialism in the Sino-North Korean relationship.

Abstract:The historical course of researches on Marxism studies in the west by Chinese scholars can be divided into three stages. Stage One starts from the late 1970s and ends at the early and mid 1980s. Stage Two covers the years from around 1989 to the mid 1990s. And Stage Three refers to the period from the year 2000 till now. The author holds that at a more profound level, the results of these researches have reflected that the discipline of Marxism studies is closely relevant to Marxist philosophy in terms of the research methods and historical development.

Abstract:The informed perspective presented here may rouse a sensitivity to the differences in reading Marxist philosophy from the perspective of the Inseparability of One and Many worldview and philosophy (a doctrine of internal, constitutive, relations––“intimacy”) on the part of Chinese intellectuals, particularly Mao Zedong, a great campaigner for philosophic and discursive Sinicization of Marxism. Marxism has provided an opportunity for a philosophical conversation with Chinese tradition, and this conversation was not launched by a government or official campaign, but instead by the efforts made on the part of countless grassroots intellectuals. It is argued that the reason for this was perhaps due to the fact that certain of Marx’s cosmological assumptions, in contrast to those of the main Western categories, are more capable of being understood and Sinicized in terms of particular philosophical currents in the Chinese tradition. This was particularly so for the two decades of the 1950s and 1960s, and until the end of the 1970s when Deng Xiaoping came to power and openly declared the start of his “Economic Reform” with the slogan “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.”

Abstract:During the central decades of the Cold War, China was Albania’s only ally. The aim of this article is to analyse how the Chinese Cultural Revolution affected Sino-Albanian relations. This article argues that the events in China threatened to undermine the Sino-Albanian alliance, because Albania did not endorse most of the Cultural Revolution’s policies, but supported it only for the sake of relations with China and the benefits received from this alliance. In a time when the Cultural Revolution caused enormous difficulties to the Chinese economy, Albania nonetheless received an increasing amount of aid. Based on recently released archives, this case study sheds light on this underexplored Cold War alliance and adds to our understanding of how the Cultural Revolution had implications beyond China’s borders.

Abstract:Political and security considerations based on the identical ideology served as a starting point for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-North Korean cooperation during the Chinese Civil War. The CCP used North Korea as a passage for goods and personnel between northern and southern areas liberated by the CCP in Northeast China. From an economic perspective, the cooperation between the CCP and North Korea was mutually beneficial. North Korea could secure much-needed food and bituminous coal through trade with CCP bases in Northeast China, while supplying industrial goods and daily essentials. North Korea supplied electricity to the CCP-liberated areas in Northeast China. However, the two parties conflicted over electricity apportionment and ownership of Supung Power Station on the Yalu River. In general, the economic cooperation between the CCP and North Korea was carried out according to international trading standards, sometimes prioritizing its own economic interests.

Abstract:Among various models of antagonism between the local regime and the Central Government in the 1930s,the model of the Southwest regime vs.the Nanjing Government was a typical one.The Southwest regime itself remained a political complex full of contradictions: On the one hand,they joined together because of their similar political orientation and mutual dependence for their interest;on the other hand,they contended with each other due to their different political aims and strategies.The complicated relationships of both unity and struggle were very common in the conflicts of Kuomintang cliques.The discovery of new historical material made it possible to make a thorough investigation of the internal power structure of the Southwest regime.An analysis of this structure,therefore,will further our understanding of the history of Kuomintang cliques and advance the study of the history of the Republic of China.
