Abstract:Among various models of antagonism between the local regime and the Central Government in the 1930s,the model of the Southwest regime vs.the Nanjing Government was a typical one.The Southwest regime itself remained a political complex full of contradictions: On the one hand, they joined together because of their similar political orientation and mutual dependence for their interest;on the other hand, they contended with each other due to their different political aims and strategies. The complicated relationships of both unity and struggle were very common in the conflicts of Kuomintang cliques. The discovery of new historical material made it possible to make a thorough investigation of the internal power structure of the Southwest regime. An analysis of this structure, therefore, will further our understanding of the history of Kuomintang cliques and advance the study of the history of the Republic of China.
