Abstract:Hexavalent chromium-containing electroplating wastewater was treated by barium salt precipitation. The effects of pH pre-adjustment of wastewater, cyanide decomposition method, and addition of Cr(VI) precipitator on the removal of hexavalent chromium, total chromium, copper, and nickel were studied. The influence of the dosage of sulfuric acid on the recovery of hexavalent chromium was examined. The optimal process parameters for treatment of hexavalent chromium-containing electroplating wastewater by barium salt precipitation are as follows:pre-adjusted pH 8, barium salt dosage 2.5 times of the theoretical value, cyanide decomposition with hydrogen peroxide, and final pH 10 adjusted with liquid caustic soda. After treating under the optimal process conditions, the total chromium content and nickel content in effluent is 0.4 mg/L and 0.3 mg/L, and no copper is detected, all of which are below the emission limits of Table 2 in the GB 21900–2008 standard. The recovery of hexavalent chromium in barium chromate sediment reaches 65% by solid–solid transformation using sulfuric acid. The costs for reagent and treatment of hazardous solid waste by barium salt precipitation are higher than those of traditional chemical reduction. Barium salt precipitation is suitable for professional chrome plating factories and plating industrial parks where chromium wastewater is strictly discharged and collected individually.

Abstract:Chromium sludge is a hazardous solid waste which cannot be effectively treated but only piled up and abandoned, causing serious environment pollution and resource wasting. This work proposes an effective novel process to separately recover all resources in chromium sludge via a sustainable way. The obtained acid solving liquid from chromium sludge is desiliconized by cationic flocculant (PCAM) to induce coprecipitation of polysilicate gel and PCAM, which mixture is calcinated to generate the product of white carbon black in purity of 94.35% with a recovery of 92.58%. After desiliconization, V in the solving liquid is selectively extracted by microemulsion (ME), which is recovered as V2O5 in purity of 99.34% with a recovery of 95.53% by the subsequent procedure of stripping-precipitation-calcination. The Fe3+ in raffinate is reduced to Fe2+ cations by Na2SO3, and is then recovered by H2C2O4 precipitation to generate the FeC2O4 product in purity of 99.12% with a recovery of 98.25%. Cr3+ cations in residual solution are recovered by alkaline precipitation and calcination to generate the Cr2O3 product in purity of 98.25% with a recovery of 92.68%. This work provides fresh penetrations into the synchronous detoxification, resource recovery and value-added utilization of hazardous industrial solid wastes.

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) waste produced by chrome plating activities pollutes the surrounding environment and harms human health. However, information about the chromium (Cr) pollution characteristics of actual electroplating sites is still lacking. In this study, the concentration, leachability and speciation of Cr in soils from a typical chrome plating site were analyzed. Our results showed that this site was severely contaminated by Cr (7.2 to 7735.2 mg/kg) and Cr(VI) reached the mean concentration of 138.7 mg/kg. The spatial distribution of Cr(VI) was related to the plating processes. Chrome plating and sewage treatment areas could be considered as the hot spots of contaminated sites. The vertical distribution of Cr(VI) was mainly affected by soil properties, where the loam layer retained and reduced a large amount of Cr(VI) due to its high content of iron minerals and finer particle fractions. Additionally, the chemical extraction results showed that Cr was mainly in non-residual fractions and the existence of Cr(VI) led to a high leaching toxicity based on the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed the speciation of Cr in the long-term contaminated soils. A large amount of Cr(VI) was reduced into Cr(III) and mainly existed as Cr(OH)3 and Cr2O3. Furthermore, Cr(VI) tended to precipitate as CaCrO4 and persisted in soils. Therefore, it is necessary to find appropriate strategies to remediate these contaminated soils. Overall, these findings strengthen our understanding of Cr(VI) behaviors and lay a foundation for the future pollution investigation, ecological remediation and risk assessment of sites contaminated by electroplating.
Study on Treatment of Chromium Wastewater by Steel Slag

Abstract:[Objective] The research aimed to study Cr wastewater treatment by steel slag.[Method] Steel slag was used as adsorbent to remove Cr from wastewater,and influence factors of the Cr wastewater treatment by steel slag were studied.[Result] Removal rate of Cr(VI) by steel slag was quite low,and the highest removal rate only reached 8.9%.Cr(Ⅲ) removal by steel slag was quite effective.For 50 ml of Cr(VI) solution(100 mg/L),after reduction,0.30 g of steel slag(100 meshes) was added to oscillate for 35 min,and total Cr removal rate was up to 90%.Cr adsorption by steel slag was an exothermal process,and physical adsorption was dominant.Steel slag was suitable for treating acidic Cr wastewater,and its adsorption process on Cr followed Frenndlich isothermal adsorption model.[Conclusion] It could reach the aim of waste treatment by wasteby using steel slag to treat Cr wastewater.

Abstract:Leather processing requires substantial inputs of energy, water and chemicals. Additionally, it generates significant amounts of liquid and solid waste, severely impacting the environment. Processing 1 Mg of raw hides yields up to 600-700 kg of waste, considerable amounts of which are solid tannery waste. Such waste contains chromium (Cr) compounds, which are commonly used as tanning agents. This paper reviews solid tannery waste treatment technologies, with emphasis on waste incineration in a specially designed experimental tunnel incinerator. Three different types of tannery waste were subjected to tests: trimmings, shavings and buffing dust. As the research revealed, the process can be applied to all types of solid tannery waste. Moreover, it enables the reuse of the heat of the process and results in a Cr concentrate in the process residues. The conducted analyses (carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen elemental analysis; inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy; powder X‑ray diffraction) proved that there is no or little organic content in the obtained residual ash, which contains up to 53.1%(w/w) Cr in the form of Cr (III) oxide. Such material may be used as a Cr ore substitute in the chemical or metallurgical industries.

Abstract:Recycling treatment of wastewater containing hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] has always been an important environmental issue. In this paper, taking advantage of the natural affinity of CrO42− and lead ions, lead carbonate was selected as a precipitant to recover Cr (VI) in the form of chrome yellow (PbCrO4). Firstly, the variation of Cr (VI) and lead species in K+-CrO42−-Pb2+-CO32− solution system with pH and PbCO3 dosage was calculated by Visual MINTEQ. The results show that the treatment effect is better under acidic conditions. Then, the effects of parameters on the removal rate of Cr, including the initial pH of solution, reaction time, reaction temperature, and the dosage of lead carbonate, were studied by batch experiments. Results show that the initial pH of solution, reaction time, and the dosage of lead carbonate have great influence, whereas reaction temperature has slight influence. And the concentration of Cr (VI) could be reduced from 100 mg/L to 0.043 mg/L at an initial pH of 3, a reaction time of 45 min, and the dosage of lead carbonate as n(PbCO3)/n(K2CrO4) = 2. The precipitates are analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS,and the results are consistent with the predictions of Visual MINTEQ, that is, the newly produced substance is only PbCrO4. The reaction mechanism of Cr (VI) on the surface of lead carbonate was studied by the adsorption kinetic model, and the results showed that the reaction was more fit with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that CrO42− could effectively react with lead atoms with unsaturated coordination bonds on the surface of lead carbonate and free lead ions leached from the surface of lead carbonate to form lead chromate. Under acidic conditions, the removal of Cr (VI) by PbCO3 may involve two main mechanisms: the mineralization and precipitation of lead and chromate ions dissolved from the surface of cerussite and the chemical adsorption of chromate ions on the surface of cerussite. This study provides a new and efficient strategy for the resource treatment of Cr (VI)-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Chromium from industrial wastewater, waste, pesticides, fertilizers, etc., always causes serious environmental problems. High levels of chromium pollution can have adverse effects on environments and living organisms. In this study, titanium salt was used to react with green tea extract to form a composite material, and the material was further used to remove hexavalent chromium in solution. The removal effect of hexavalent chromium was investigated under different reaction conditions, namely temperature, time, pH, and initial chromium concentration. The results showed that the chromium removal effect was the best under the conditions of acid to neutral pH, 45°C, reaction time of 24 h, and initial chromium concentration of 80 mg/L. This study provides a feasible method to solve the problem of chromium pollution and has high application value in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Despite trivalent chromium’s manifold functionalities in industrial manufacturing processes, when it is improperly treated and disposed to the environment, due to external environmental factors it could get converted to hexavalent chromium that has toxic effects on humans and our environment. Hence, there is a stringent need to optimize the current industrial practices of chromium handling, management, and disposal. This paper puts forth the inferences from comparative studies conducted using chemical precipitation and biochar adsorption to ascertain if the current chromium removal practice in the chrome tanning leather industry under study is an optimal method or not. Results indicate that the current industrial practice of achieving 86~90 % removal efficiency using 2000 mg/L of MgO at pH6 can be optimized by carrying out chemical precipitation at pH8 for 96~99% removal efficiency; a combination of NaOH and Ca(OH)2 in varying ratios resulted in 80-96 % removal efficiency at pH7 and ~99% at all the ratios at pH8, but the sludge volumes were higher than twice the volumes generated by MgO precipitation; inactivated biochar in similar proportions to that of chemical precipitants did not yield encouraging results and the maximum removal efficiency was 73.2% at 48000 mg/L dosage. Therefore, if not for complete treatment of tannery wastewater with biochar, residual chromium in the supernatant should be treated with biochar as it could be effective in treating lower concentrations of chromium.
A New Method (Ball Milling and Sodium Sulfide) for Mechanochemical Treatment of Soda Ash Chromite Ore Processing Residue

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium in soda ash Chromite Ore Processing Residue (COPR) is harmful to the environment, it is imperative to develop a low cost, efficient, and effective treatment. Herein, a new method (ball milling+sodium sulfide) was developed for mechanochemical treatment of water-leached COPR (W-COPR, about 900 mg/kg non-exchangeble Cr(VI) and mostly chromite bounded). Under a stoichiometric ratio of S2- to Cr(VI) of 5, milling speed of 200 rpm, milling time of 30 min, ball-to-powder weight ratios of 8.5, and, a total Cr(VI) of 76.88 mg/kg and a Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) total Cr value of 1.15 mg/L were achieved after treatment. Results of the mineral liberation analyser (MLA) analyses showed 10% increase of chromite grains liberation and grain size reduction were beneficial to the chromite-bound Cr(VI) reduction. Similar effects were also observed on magnesioferrite encapsulated Cr(VI). Particle aggregation and formation of glass phase colloid precipitation could potentially impede Cr(VI) reduction. Results of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses indicated that the treatment method reduced the actual Cr(VI) concentration to 312 mg/kg with Cr(VI) reduction efficiency of 98% being achieved. Overall, the new method is simple and efficient, and provides a guidance for future industrial application.
Stabilization of hexavalent chromium with pretreatment and high temperature sintering in highly contaminated soil

Abstract:This study explored the effectiveness and mechanisms of high temperature sintering following prereduction with ferric sulfate (FeSO4), sodium sulfide (Na2S), or citric acid (C6H8O7) in stabilizing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in highly contaminated soil. The soil samples had an initial total Cr leaching of 1768.83 mg/L, and Cr(VI) leaching of 1745.13 mg/L. When FeSO4 or C6H8O7 reduction was followed by sintering at 1000°C, the Cr leaching was reduced enough to meet the Safety Landfill Standards regarding general industrial solid waste. This combined treatment greatly improved the stabilization efficiency of chromium because the reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) decreased the mobility of chromium and made it more easily encapsulated in minerals during sintering. SEM, XRD, TG-DSC, and speciation analysis indicated that when the sintering temperature reached 1000°C, almost all the chromium in soils that had the pre-reduction treatment was transformed into the residual form. At 1000°C, the soil melted and promoted the mineralization of Cr and the formation of new Cr-containing compounds, which significantly decreased subsequent leaching of chromium from the soil. However, without reduction treatment, chromium continued to leach from the soil even after being sintered at 1000°C, possibly because the soil did not fully fuse and because Cr(VI) does not bind with soil as easily as Cr(III).

Abstract:Chromium is widely presented in industrial solid wastes like tannery sludge, electroplating sludge and metallurgical slag. These industrial solid wastes usually undergo thermal treatment process to reduce volume and toxicity. However, a significant amount of low-toxicity and low-mobility Cr(III) is determined to be oxidized to highly-toxic and highly-mobile Cr(VI) at high temperature, posing a greater threat to humans and the ecological environment. This paper summarizes the forms of Cr in solid wastes containing Cr, redox reactions mechanisms for different Cr forms, and methods to inhibit Cr(VI) formation during thermal treatment process. The Cr(III) compounds in solid waste containing Cr mainly include Cr(III) hydrates, Cr(III) oxides, Cr(III) hosting spinels and Organic-Cr(III). Cr(III) hydrates are usually oxidized at temperatures above 100 °C, even without the induction of alkali and alkaline earth metals. Compared to the direct reaction of Cr(III) oxides and spinels with O 2 , Cr(III) can be induced to oxidize at lower temperatures by alkali and alkaline earth metals. A large amount of Cr(III) is oxidized usually at 600–900 °C. Organic-Cr is generally pyrolyzed to CrO 3(g) , CrO 2 Cl (g) and Cr 2 O 3(s) at high temperature. CrO 2 Cl (g) can be released directly into the atmosphere with CrO 3(g) , or captured by CaO to form CaCrO 4 . The reduction of Cr(VI) at high temperatures includes the decomposition of unstable Cr(VI) compounds driven solely by temperature, as well as reduction facilitated by acidic oxides. The reduction of Cr(VI) at high temperatures involves the decomposition of unstable Cr(VI) compounds, driven solely by temperature, as well as reduction facilitated by acidic oxides. Typical unstable Cr(VI) compounds include CrO 3 and CaCrO 4 , which begin to decompose at temperatures above 270 °C and 1000 °C, respectively. Cr(III) oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction at high temperature are strongly dependent on the system basicity and the temperature. Subsequently, reducing oxygen content in atmosphere and the system basicity by adding common acidic oxides such as silicon dioxide, phosphate and sulfates exhibited a significant effect on inhibiting Cr(VI) formation during heating solid waste containing Cr. However, Cr oxidation and reduction mechanisms at molecular level have not yet been explored, and more effective measures to inhibit Cr(III) oxidation during thermal treatment of solid waste also should be developed in further works.

Abstract:Various industries produce large amounts of wastewater containing chromium complexes, such as tanning, electroplating, printing and dyeing. The complete removal of chromium complexes through traditional precipitation and coagulation processes is difficult, which is a great challenge in meeting strict chromium discharge standards. To date, a large number of literature reviews on chromium ions removal processes have been published, but none on the removal of chromium complexes. To tackle the challenge and provide reference for future research, this review summarized the difficulties of chromium complex removal and systematically explores the research status of chromium-complex-removal technologies. The researches on chromium complex removal are mainly focused on the precipitation, biotechnology, adsorption and redox process. These technologies are reviewed in detail in terms of their technological mechanisms, main advantages and shortcomings. In general, the researches available are still not sufficient to solve this problem to date. And finally, the future research directions of chromium complex removal have been proposed.
Chromium (VI) Retrieval from Chromium Ore Processing Residues by Electrokinetic Treatment

Abstract:Electrokinetics (EK) was investigated as a possible technique for in-situ treatment of leachable chromium at a built site contaminated with chromium ore processing residues (COPR). A preliminary EK experiment was carried out at the laboratory scale on an undisturbed COPR core sample. Methods applied for material and pore water characterization before and after EK treatment addressed physical aspects by laser diffraction granulometry, pycnometry and pore water content, mineralogical aspects by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and chemical aspects by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy for elemental composition, spectrophotometry for Cr(VI) analysis, and potentiometry for pH determination. EK was run at 1 V/cm with no external constraints on current intensity. The EK experiment reached an extraction of 72% of the total leachable Cr(VI) after only 10 days of treatment and 84% after 20 days. Material texture, composition, and pH remained similar. These results indicate that EK presents a potential solution for extracting leachable Cr(VI) from COPR sites. The impounded COPR material appeared to be heterogeneous in composition at all scales, from field to lab sample, adding to the challenge of in-situ treatment.

Abstract:The pollution of chromium wastewater is becoming more and more serious. Biological adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is an effective waste water treatment technology. In this work, non-treated leaves (NL), sulfuric acid modified leaves (SL), and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified leaves (CL) were used to remove Cr (VI) from the water. Indeed, leaves are highly effective and low-cost biosorbents, and were proven to achieve a recovery of resources from waste. In the batch experiments, the adsorption of Cr (VI) onto SL and CL was shown to be influenced by several factors, including the initial pH of the solution, the adsorbent dosage, and temperature. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results suggest that the reduction of Cr (VI) to the less harmful trivalent chromate Cr (III) occurred during the adsorption processes; this was followed by Cr (III) adsorption onto the surface of the adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities obtained for Cr (VI) at 35 degrees C were 170.8 and 137.9 mg/g for SL and CL at pH 2, respectively. The results show that SL and CL, as cheap and effective biosorbents of Cr (VI), realized the recycling of wastes and have good application prospects.

Abstract:Chromium is a hazardous compound from industrial processes, known for its toxicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity. Chemical methods are efficient but cost-effective alternatives with reduced sludge are sought. Electro-coagulation, utilizing low-cost iron plate electrodes, was explored for factual tannery wastewater treatment in this manuscript. Operating parameters such as initial chromium concentration, voltage, electrode number, operating time, agitation speed and current density has been studied to evaluate the treatment effeciency. Under optimal conditions (15 V, 0.4 mA/cm 2 , 200 rpm, 330 ppm chromium, 8 iron electrodes with a total surface area of 0.1188 m 2 , 3 h), chromium elimination was 98.76%. Iron anode consumption, power use, and operating cost were 0.99 gm/L, 0.0143 kW-h/L, and 160 EGP/kg of chromium eliminated, respectively. Kinetics studies were pursued first-order reaction (97.99% correlation), and Langmuir isotherms exhibited strong conformity (Langmuir R 2 : 99.99%). A predictive correlation for chromium elimination (R 2 : 97.97%) was developed via statistical regression. At HARBY TANNERY factory in Egypt, industrial sewage treatment achieved a final chromium disposal rate of 98.8% under optimized conditions.

Abstract:Coal is an abundant resource which can be used to produce low-cost energy; however, its usage causes great environmental damage. Before mineral coal can be used, it must be processed to remove coal tailings. These tailings contain pyrite and accumulate in large dumps, presenting significant environmental liabilities, such as acid mine drainage. Another industry that generates environmental liabilities is the chrome-plating industry, mainly because it produces hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) waste. The main aim of this work was to evaluate Cr6+ as a reduction agent in trivalent chromium (Cr3+) conversion in the leaching of coal-mine waste containing pyrite. Cr3+ is about 100 times less toxic than Cr6+ and can be easily removed from industrial effluents by alkaline precipitation. There are several sources of effluents containing Cr6+—a compound which is known worldwide to be toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic. A leaching and treatment device was developed and tested for waste treatment. The results indicated that the developed treatment system reduced 100% of Cr6+ to Cr3+ through pyrite leaching in a Cr6+ wastewater sample from the electroplating industry. In addition, the chromium sludge resulting from the treatment process, after calcination, was tested in a ceramic glaze as a pigment and, when compared with an industrial pigment, showed similar mineralogical characteristics.

Abstract:The recycling of industrial solid by-products such as red mud (RM) has become an urgent priority, due to their large quantities and lack of reutilization methods can lead to resource wastage. In this work, RM was employed to fabricate green hydrochar (HC) to prepare zero-valent iron (ZVI) modified carbonous materials, and conventional iron salts (IS, FeCl3) was applied as comparison, fabricated HC labeled as RM/HC and IS/HC, respectively. The physicochemical properties of these HC were comprehensively characterized. Further, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal performance was assessed (375.66 and 337.19 mg/g for RM/HC and IS/HC, respectively). The influence of dosage and initial pH were evaluated, while isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics analysis were also conducted, to mimic the surface interactions. The stability and recyclability of adsorbents also verified, while the practical feasibility was assessed by bok choy-planting experiment. This work revealed that RM can be used as a high value and green fabricant for HC the effective removal of chromium contaminants from the wastewater.
