Abstract:The advances in catalytic polymer membranes and membrane reactors were reviewed.The preparation methods and technologies of bifunctional catalytic polymer membranes,as well as the types of catalytic membrane reactors for applications involing different chemical reactions were summarized.The advantages and existing problems of catalytic polymer membranes and membrane reactors were also discussed.Additionally,the prospects of catalytic polymer membranes and membrane reactors were proposed.

Abstract:Several intrinsic drawbacks exist in the conventional photocatalytic oxidation process in terms of the application forms of photocatalyst,which can be overcome effectively by using photocatalytic membrane reactor,directly coupling the photocatalytic oxidation process with the membrane separation technology.Considering the lackness of the basis of the theory in choosing the type and pore size of coupled membrane,several theoretical principles and a corresponding reasonable procedure were put forward for the first time in this paper in respect to the advisable membrane choice,in addition to a brief but comprehensive description of technical characteristics of each kind of the coupled process.

Abstract:<p>Membrane reactors - as promising technology for pursuing the Process Intensification Strategy in various chemical processes - were reviewed in the field of steam reforming of methane and liquid hydrocarbons for sustainable hydrogen production. A summary of the advantages and disadvantages of each considered process was presented. Drawbacks and current issues of the traditional reactors in fuel processing processes, which can be overcome using membrane reactors, were also described.</p><p>In particular, steam reforming processes are the major hydrogen production methods; therefore, in this review the effects of different operating parameters, such as reaction temperature, pressure, feed composition, reactor configuration, feed and sweep gas flow rates were analyzed and discussed in terms of methane conversion, hydrogen recovery, hydrogen yield and CO selectivity. A deep discussion was proposed about the effects of the hydrogen removal from reaction zone (the so called "shift effect") toward the permeation zone in the membrane reactors, highlighting the benefits of their adoption over the traditional reactors.</p>

Abstract:Technologies for conversion of microbial energy have recently attracted interest to transform waste into bioenergy, thus addressing simultaneously environmental and energy issues. Nonetheless, actual microbial systems for energy conversion have limitations such as low rate of mass transfer, uneven energy distribution and strong inhibition of products and by-products. These technical bottlenecks can be alleviated by using membranes, which regulate the transfer of mass, heat and energy. Here we review applications of membranes for microbial energy conversion. We discuss mechanisms, functions and development of membranes for feedstock preparation, bioenergy production and bioproduct post-treatment. We present key membrane factors that control the efficiency of microbial fuel cells. We address membrane biofouling problems and anti-fouling approaches, in order to improve future commercialization.

Abstract:Micro-reactor (MR) technology is known as an alternative technique for producing materials in a more sustainable way. The advantages of micro-reactors and membrane separation which are combined in membrane micro-reactors (MMR) listed as improved heat and mass transfer, high surface area to volume ratio, enhanced catalytic efficiency with no equilibrium limitation, flexibility in reactor design, a short distance of molecular diffusion as well as high operational safety. The restriction of low production capacity of micro-reactors can be easily solved by using parallel micro-channels in a reactor chip. This mini-review represents firstly the definition of micro-reactors as well as the advantages and disadvantages of membrane micro-reactors. Furthermore, the theoretical basics of membrane micro-reactors and their fabrication methods are presented. At last, the application of catalytic membrane micro-reactors in different processes is given especially in biofuel production. The achieved results of previous researches for hydrogen and other fuels production show better performance of catalytic MMRs in terms of reaction conversion and coke deposition compared with convectional reactors at the same reaction conditions.

Abstract:Membrane reactors combine reaction and separation in a single unit operation, the membrane selectively removing one or more of the reactant or product species. Most commonly these reactors have been used with reactions, whose yields are limited by thermodynamic equilibrium. For such reactions, membrane reactors seem to offer potential advantages over more traditional reactors. Membrane reactors have also been proposed for other applications; for increasing the yield of enzymatic and catalytic reactions by influencing, through the membrane, the concentration of various intermediate species; for selectively removing species, which would otherwise poison or deactivate the reaction; and for providing a controlled interface between two or more reactant species. Membrane reactors are currently being tested with a number of catalytic reactions. Reactions studied by our group include catalytic dehydrogenation of ethane, and methane steam reforming. Theoretical models have also been developed for these reactors to explain the experimental data. A brief description of our experimental and theoretical studies is presented here.

Abstract:Membrane (ion membrane) electrolysis technology has gained a lot of attention and development because of its function and advantage of making full use of the two-stage reaction and separating the products of the two poles. In particular, the membrane electrolysis industry has a great potential to grow in the context of the transformation from "carbon-driven" to "electrically driven." There are many systems that require membrane or ion membrane electrolysis. Typical ones are electrolytic water to hydrogen, chlor-alkali, electrodialysis, electrometallurgy, etc. In this paper, several typical membrane (ion membrane) electrolysis scenarios are selected and analyzed in detail with respect to their principles, development history, characteristics, problems faced, and development prospects. A theoretical basis is laid for the development and application of efficient industrialized membrane electrolysis technology, which will be beneficial to the technological progress in this field.

Abstract:This work reviews the recent patents and progresses of novel membrane contactors used in gas/liquid separation. Compared with conventional separation facilities, membrane contactors will play more and more important role in waste treatment in the near future. The advantages in separation include wider operation range, higher separation efficiency, independent flow between liquid and gas, linear scale-up and compact structure, etc. The structure of hollow fiber membrane contactor are emphatically analyzed and typical gas/liquid separation process such as membrane adsorption, membrane distillation and membrane structured packing in waste treatment are investigated in detail. Abstract:The increasing demand for hydrogen as a clean energy carrier, driven by global efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, necessitates advancing efficient hydrogen production technologies. Membrane reactors, at the forefront of these technologies, offer a promising avenue for enhancing hydrogen production through integrating novel catalysts, innovative membrane designs, and utilizing renewable energy sources. This review explores the latest developments in membrane reactor technology, highlighting the synergistic application of advanced catalysts and membrane designs to improve hydrogen yield and efficiency. Integrating renewable energy sources is especially emphasized to achieve sustainable hydrogen production, alongside exploring nanotechnology to introduce new materials and configurations that elevate hydrogen generation. This review further explores the advancements in high-temperature membrane reactors, unlocking significant improvements in operational efficiency and the purity of the produced hydrogen. Moreover, it explores the up-and-coming potential of green chemistry for developing eco-friendly hydrogen production methods and optimizing these membrane reactors through advanced control strategies. A particular focus is given to the bio-hydrogen production and the application of mixed ionic-electronic conductors to elevate the reactor performance further.

Abstract:Membrane extraction is a new separation technique combining membrane separation with liquid liquid extraction. Applications of membrane extraction are described in this paper. Its applications in extracting metals, organic substances, bio products and pharmaceuticals and in membrane extractive biodegradation reactors and enzyme membrane reactors are reviewed respectively. It is pointed out that the key to putting membrane extraction into operation lies in the development of membrane materials and the enhancement of mass transfer. It is also pointed out that the extractor based on hollow fiber is the key device for membrane extraction.
