Abstract:Influences of normalizing and tempering temperature on mechanical properties and microstructure of steel casting were investigated in this paper. The results showed that as the normalizing temperature increased, tensile strength increased, while tensile stretch increased slowly at first and decreased at last. Steel casting got best comprehensive mechanical properties after a 970°C normalizing treatment. Normalized at 970°C and tempered at the rage of 500 °C and 550°C, steel casting got best comprehensive mechanical properties. The relation between mechanical properties and temperature was gotten using Matlab Software. The microstructure was ferrite and pearlite after normalizing, and tempered sorbite after high tempering.

Abstract:Weld and base metals require hot or cold working during the steel equipment manufacturing process. As a result, the components should be subjected to a normalizing heat treatment in order to recover their mechanical properties. In this study, the submerged-arc welding of the high strength low alloy (HSLA) thick steel plate(13MnNiMoR) is adapted for the vessel head under the normalizing and tempering heat treatment. The findings showed that the material toughness decreases after heating to simulate a vessel head forming process. The stamping process is carried out under the conditions of 980 °C for one hour, normalizing at 920 °C for 1 h and tempering between 600–660 °C for 2 h, respectively. The martensite-austenite (M-A) constituent is distributed in granular bainite and the boundary of austenite in island constituent. Therefore, it was deemed to be the most detrimental to Charpy-V impact toughness. Between normalizing and tempering, intercritical normalizing at 740 °C was added. As a result of the ferrite with fine particles M-A constituent, the toughness increases significantly.

Abstract:The appropriate heat treatment process may obviously enhance the material mechanics performance, lengthens the service life of the machine parts , reduces the exploitation conditions of the material . This article uses mechanical properties test and the optical microscope research quenching and tempering comprehensive heat treatment craft is 15mm controls to thickness controlled rolling and controlled cooling (TMCP) condition tissue and the properties of the EH36 level ship plate steel influence. The result indicated that, after the heat treatment the TMCP condition ship plate steel overall performance has enhances greatly, although has the drop slightly in the intensity, but its plasticity, the low temperature impact performance all has the distinct improvement in particular.

Abstract:The construction of heavy polar icebreakers is usually done with special hull steels, which require comprehensive properties such as good low-temperature toughness, high strength, and superior fatigue resistance. Reasonable and satisfactory heat treatments should be investigated and applied to acquire the required high strength and superior low-temperature toughness, since this is deemed an effective approach to ameliorate the combined properties of high-strength hull steels. Regarding this, the present study specifically explores the effects of different laboratory-based quenching (850 to 930 °C) and tempering (580 to 660 °C) heat treatments on the final low-temperature toughness of the high-strength hull steels. The low-temperature toughness is eventually improved without significantly sacrificing the strength. The results show that a favourable combination of properties can be obtained in the specimens under 900 °C quenching and 660 °C tempering processes. Additionality, the specimens tempered at 620 °C present the highest hardness, owing to the higher percentage of tempered martensite. Detailed mechanisms of the enhanced properties of the typical specimens subjected to the corresponding quenching and tempering processing are analysed and explicated.

Abstract:Hot forming is an advanced manufacturing technique emerged in recent years which are specially used to produce automobile high strength steel sheet stamping parts.In this paper,the principle of the shaping method was presented;the influences of forming parameters such as heating temperature,heating time,forming velocity and cooling speed,etc.on the forming process were discussed.Some hot forming experiments for an automobile typical part were successfully carried out.The results show that the component has an optimal lath martensite microstructure with a tensile strength of up to 1 500 MPa.It can fully meet the production requirements.

Abstract:The paper describes physical and numerical simulations of a manufacturing process composed of hot forging and controlled cooling, which replace the conventional heat treatment technology. The objective was to investigate possibilities and limitations of the heat treatment with the use of the heat of forging. Three steels used to manufacture automotive parts were investigated. Experiments were composed of two sets of tests. The first were isothermal (TTT) and constant cooling rate (CCT) dilatometric tests, which supplied data for the identification of the numerical phase transformation model. The second was a physical simulation of the sequence forging-cooling on Gleeble 3800, which supplied data for the validation of the models. In the numerical part, a finite element (FE) thermal-mechanical code was combined with metallurgical models describing recrystallization and grain growth during forging and phase transformations during cooling. The FE model predicted distributions of the temperature and the austenite grain size in the forging, which were input data for further simulations of phase transformations during cooling. A modified JMAK equation was used to calculate the kinetics of transformation and volume fraction of microstructural constituents after cooling. Since the dilatometric tests were performed for various austenitization temperatures before cooling, it was possible to include austenite grain size as a variable in the model. An inverse algorithm developed by the authors was applied in the identification procedure. The model with optimal material parameters was used for simulations of hot forging and controlled cooling in one of the forging shops in Poland. Distributions of microstructural constituents in the forging after cooling were calculated. As a consequence, various cooling sequences during heat treatment could be analyzed and compared.

Abstract:On the teeth and groove of large steel chain wheel,large number of MT thin lines were disclosed. By analysis of numerical simulation,we found that the cross solid/liquid interface was very low and the low temperature gradient will lead to micro-porosity. Then metallographic analysis through getting slices in the tangential and cross section was made to verify the numerical judgment. On the basis of increasing temperature gradient,15 foundry plots had been designed and a best one was selected to be poured,and the corresponding pouring castings showed that the selected plan was excellent. By the same principle,we succeeded in optimizing the foundry technology of bearing support. A conclusion is made that to get sound steel casting,the temperature in the solidification direction should be high enough to make the solid/liquid interface solidify in layer-by-layer solidification mode.

Abstract:Heavy forging is a very important hot working process for pressure vessels in nuclear reactors. The need of outer shape, size, and inner microstructure in heavy forgings can be met by optimum forging processing parameters. The dynamic softening mechanism on the steel of ASME SA508 3 during hot working was researched with Thermal Mechanical method. The relationships of true stress strain were obtained under different deformation conditions. The critical strains for dynamic recrystallization and the relationship between grain size and parameter Z were studied. The unique of parameter Z and the range of application for dynamic recrystallization were analysised. The relationships among mechanics, physical, and materials play very significant role theoretically and practically in microstructure control forging.

Abstract:Additive Manufacture (AM) offers great potential for creating metallic parts for high end products used in critical application i.e. aerospace and biomedical engineering. General acceptance of AM within these fields has been held back by a lack of confidence in the consistency of the mechanical properties of AMed parts associated by the occurrence of porosity, large columnar grains and texture. In this research, to counters this problem we have combined hot forging and subsequent heat treatment. Although, perhaps not best suited to components featuring fine detail, this technique should be well suited to the manufacture of forged components such as fan blades. Here, AM is able to create a near net-shape blank which is then hot forged to size, eliminating intermediate production stages and generating good mechanical properties in the final component. The material used in the current study is AM 316 L Stainless Steel. By altering the printing parameters of the AM machine, two batches of samples were built, each displaying a different porosity content. This allowed the influence of initial build quality to be illustrated. By comparing the two sample batches, it was possible to gain an insight into the possibilities of controlling porosity and material microstructure. The success of the proposed hot forging and heat treatment technique was validated by mechanical testing (i.e. tensile and hardness experiments) and microstructure evolution characterization (i.e. optical microscopy observation and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques). The results revealed that the post processing strategy reduced material porosity and enabled the creation of a more robust microstructure, resulting in improved mechanical properties of the AM material.

Abstract:In our previous study, intercritical quenching from the dual-phase region of ferrite and austenite regions, which is called lamellarizing (L) treatment, brought a clear improvement of balance between the strength and toughness of Cu-containing low alloy steel based on American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) A707 5L grade. Moreover, the results imply that the reverse transformation behavior during L treatment is very important in order to optimize the L treatment temperature. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to clarify the mechanism by which L treatment improves the mechanical properties in terms of reverse transformation behavior. Additionally, offshore structures require good weldability, because the structures generally have a lot of weld joints. Therefore, weldability was also investigated in this study. The investigation revealed that coarse Cu precipitates are observed in the not-transformed α phase, so the strength tendency in relation to the L treatment temperature is relevant to the area ratio of the not-transformed α phase and the transformed γ phase during L treatment. From the in situ electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) results, it is believed to be possible to enhance the mechanical properties of Cu-containing low alloy steel by controlling the area ratio of the reverse-transformed gamma phase and selecting the appropriate L treatment temperature. Furthermore, the long part forging of Cu-containing low alloy steel has a good weldability, since the maximum hardness of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) is less than 300 HV, and the HAZ of steel has a good crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) property with less than 2.3 kJ/mm of heat input of GTAW.

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of the tempering process on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of E690 marine steel, aiming to replicate actual production conditions and reduce costs. Various techniques, including metallurgical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, impact experiments, tensile tests, and electrochemical corrosion tests, were employed to evaluate the material's properties and performance. The results indicated that as the tempering temperature increased, the tempering degree in the tempered martensite structure improved, martensite strips coarsened, the size of precipitated carbides increased, and the proportion of large-angle grain boundaries decreased. Consequently, the tensile and yield strengths initially increased and then decreased, while the impact toughness and elongation gradually improved. At a tempering temperature of 600 °C, the steel exhibited the best overall mechanical properties, with a tensile strength of 729 MPa, a yield strength of 649 MPa, and an elongation of 18%. Furthermore, at a tempering temperature of 550 °C, the test steel showed optimal corrosion resistance, with a corrosion rate of 0.03233 mm/y and an open-circuit potential of -0.36 V.

Abstract:Abstract With the help of QForm simulation software, a comprehensive assessment of the production of a pipe billet with a flange is carried out. The paper studies the influence of the temperature of the die tooling on the technological extrusion force, the stress-strain state in the workpiece, as well as the change in the temperature of the semi-finished product, die and punch in the process of hot forging. The article presents the force graphs, the maximum values of the intensity of stresses and the intensity of deformations in the part, as well as the highest values of temperatures.

Abstract:Leveled steel plates were taken from hot-rolled strip steel with tensile strength of 780 MPa, which had been widely used in building cranes and concrete pump trucks by cold forming. In the present work, the plates were tem-pered on a production line, and their mechanical properties, welding performance, cold forming property and microstruc-tures were investigated. The results show that the strength and hardness of the steel increased significantly after the temper-ing, while the impact toughness and elongation rate decreased slightly. The difference between the mechanical properties in transverse direction and these in longitudinal direction decreased due to the tempering. The mechanical properties of the welded joints were improved showing reduced strength-loss after welding. The cold forming performance was also greatly improved. No significant change in phase constituents was observed due to the tempering, however, some ferrites grains were coarsened and their dislocation density decreased associated with increasing of cellular dislocation. Increased precipi-tates containing Ti, Nb, Mo were observed, resulting in the precipitation hardening.

Abstract:During the stage of holding pressure and cooling process in the hot forming process, the control of various parameters is very important to ensure the quality of hot forming parts. With binding reasonable die design and finite element simulation, the paper puts forward optimum technological parameters of holding pressure and cooling process. On the basis of above study, the constitutive equation is established in the paper with experimental data which can reflect the true flow stress under different conditions. Through finite simulation results, it can be seen that there is very important effect of holding time on hot forming temperature field and stress and strain state. Therefore, it is very necessary to design reasonable holding pressure time in order to make the temperature even and stress and strain reasonable.

Abstract:1 000 MPa high-strength steel plates for construction machinery are welded by metal active gas(MAG) welding method with GHS90 welding wire as filler material and the weld joints are treated at 250 ℃, 480 ℃, 600 ℃ for 2 h, respectively. Microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints with different post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is analyzed by tensile test, microhardness measurement, optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and electron back-scattered diffraction(EBSD). The results show that with the increase of PWHT temperature from 250 ℃ to 600℃, the average strength of welded joint reduces from 1 014.5 MPa to 934.5 MPa and the average–20 ℃ impact absorbing energy of weld metals decreases from 66 J to 24 J. With higher PWHT temperature, larger bainitic lath and coarser carbide precipitates result in lower toughness of weld metal. Meanwhile, the size of effective grains becomes larger and the density of high-angle grain boundary is decreased, which led to the degradation of impact property of weld metal.

Abstract:Temper embrittlement is a major challenge encountered during the heat treatment of high-performance steels for large forgings. This study investigates the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of Cr-Ni-Mo-V thick-walled steel, designed for large forgings with a tensile strength of 1500 MPa, under different tempering cooling rates. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were employed to analyze the microstructural features. The results demonstrate that the embrittlement occurring during air cooling after tempering is attributed to the concentration of impurities near Fe3C at the grain boundaries. The low-temperature impact toughness at -40 °C after water quenching reaches 29 J due to the accelerated cooling rate during tempering, which slows down the diffusion of impurity elements towards the grain boundaries, resulting in a reduced concentration and dislocation density and an increased stability of the grain boundaries, thereby enhancing toughness. The bainite content decreases and the interface between martensite and bainite undergoes changes after water quenching during tempering. These alterations influence the crack propagation direction within the two-phase microstructure, further modifying the toughness. These findings contribute to the understanding of temper embrittlement and provide valuable guidance for optimizing heat treatment processes to enhance the performance of high-performance steels in large forgings.

Abstract:A microstructure consisted of granular bainite, upper bainite, acicular ferrite, polygonal ferrite, and a little of pearlite was obtained by controlling rolling and cooling in marine steel. The grain size of the two steels was refined to 5-9 μm. The size of the MA island was about 3-6 μm. Both steels had higher tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness, and the performance of steel B was better than that of steel A. Both steels exhibited large and deep dimples at -80 °C impact fracture. The longitudinal impact energy of the specimens was above 250J, and the steel B even exceeded 300J. Its longitudinal impact performance was better than lateral impact performance. Both steels had achieved good performance due to fine grain strengthening, MA island strengthening, precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening caused by controlled rolling and cooling. The alloying element nickel effectively improved the low temperature impact toughness of the experimental steel. Excellent impact energy of both steels was attributed to higher texture strength for RD specimens.

Abstract:Abstract The direct quenching and tempering process of 1000MPa low alloy high strength steel had been studied in this paper. When the tempering temperatures were between 550°C and 610°C after direct quenching, carbides began to precipitate in the test steel, and the main microstructure were tempered martensite. When tempering temperatures were between 640°C and 670°C, the recovery stage of martensite lath basically ended and recrystallization began. The precipitated carbides grew up and the microstructure were mainly tempered sorbite. The results showed that the optimum tempering temperature range of the test steel was 610°C∼640 °C. The yield strength and tensile strength of the test steel were greater than 1000MPa, and the comprehensive properties of the test steel were better. It provided guidance for the production of 1000MPa high strength steel by direct quenching and tempering process in industry.

Abstract:For M50 bearing steel, which is widely used in aerospace engine main bearings, fretting wear is an important but neglected category of wear failure during engine cold startup. High temperature tempering is crucial in heat treatment to enhance its microstructure and wear resistance. In order to investigate the influence of different tempering conditions on fretting wear performance of M50 steel, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive study. This research explores how heat treatment processes affect the fretting wear properties of M50 steel by varying the tempering temperature (450 °C, 500 °C, 550 °C, 600 °C, and 650 °C). We analyzed the microstructure evolution and fretting wear behavior under different conditions using SEM, EDS, XRD and other characterization methods. The results show that the tempering temperature influences fretting wear through martensite, retained austenite, and carbide transformations. In the 450 °C–600 °C range, wear volume and wear rate decrease with hardness. At 550 °C tempering, M50 achieves the highest hardness (59.71 HRC) and a lower wear rate (9.661 × 10−8 mm3/(N·mm)). M50 steel exhibits optimal fretting wear performance at 550 °C tempering. Overall, wear behavior occurs in the mixed slip regime, shifting towards partial slip with higher tempering temperatures. When the tempering temperature is low, the fretting wear mechanism is predominantly dominated by fatigue wear and abrasive wear, while at higher tempering temperatures, the fretting wear mechanism is primarily governed by oxidative wear and adhesive wear.
