Abstract:A new salt LiBOB (lithium bis(oxalato)borate) as the electrolyte solute for lithium ion battery and its configuration, preparation, physical and chemical properties, especially electrochemical properties are introduced in this paper. The preliminary results and recent finding on LiBOB-based electrolyte are summarized. Emphasis is placed on the electrochemistry of the BOB-anion on both graphite anode and metal-oxide-based cathode surfaces. Certain issues associated with the impurity and safety of the salt in lithium ion systems are also discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of LiBOB are generalized. Finally, the emphases and strategies for R&D of electrolyte of improved performance in future are indicated.

Abstract:This review summarizes the current application of lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) in various high voltage cathodes, and compares the advantages and disadvantages of commonly used lithium salts with LiBOB. The functional mechanism of LiBOB is then discussed in three aspects: the classical film formation mechanism; the HF removal mechanism; and the superoxide radical removal mechanism. Finally, the current challenges facing LiBOB use, and strategies for overcoming them, are presented. Lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) is one of the most common film‐forming electrolyte additives used in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), since it can form a dense boron‐containing polymer as a solid electrolyte interlayer (or cathode electrolyte interlayer) in order to isolate the electrode material from the electrolyte and prevent side reactions. LiBOB can serve as HF scavenger to maintain the structural integrity of electrodes via avoiding the transition metal dissolution caused by HF attack. LiBOB also can react with LiPF6 to generate lithium difluoro (oxalate)borate (LiDFOB) that can be further used as a clean‐up agent for reactive oxygen radicals. This article lists the application of LiBOB in high capacity and high voltage cathode materials, and also reviews the working mechanisms of LiBOB used in these materials to improve the performance of LIBs. Finally, it presents the current shortcomings of LiBOB and strategies to overcome these. This article is expected to provide useful insights for employing LiBOB as a feasible method of dealing with the difficulty of running high capacity LIBs stably under high voltage.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries show great energy storage potential due to their high energy density. However, it is difficult for conventional liquid electrolytes to form a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on cathode surface to ensure long-term stable cycling of lithium-oxygen batteries. Herein, LiBOB is added to the LiTFSI-based electrolyte to solve the above-mentioned problems. By introducing LiBOB into LiTFSI single-salt electrolyte system, the electron delocalization of the BOB− anion induces the dissociation equilibrium of the lithium salt to occur positively and the formed electrolyte exhibits good ionic conductivity. Different amounts of LiBOB show different characteristics in electrochemical performance. Trace amounts of LiBOB as an additive increase the solvation of Li+ and improve the discharge capacity of the cell. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of the LiTFSI-LiBOB dual-salt electrolyte forms a protective SEI when LiBOB has a larger proportion of lithium salts in the electrolyte, resulting in comparable cycling performance. This work demonstrates a promising approach to design electrolytes for long-term stable cycling of lithium-oxygen batteries.
The Electrochemical Characterization of Lithium Bis( Oxalato) Borate Synthesized by A Novel Method

Abstract:The solid- state reaction was employed to obtain a lithium salt, lithium bis (oxalato)borate (LiBOB). The best temperature range for preparing LiBOB is from 240 to 280 degrees C. The resulting LiBOB was employed in lithium- ion cells as an electrolyte, and the cells have been observed to perform satisfactorily. At 0.5 and 1C discharge rates, the capacity of the cell with LiBOB electrolyte was almost the same as that of the cell with LiPF6 electrolyte. At 55 degrees C the capacity retention of the cell using the LiBOB electrolyte was much higher than that of the cell using the LiPF6 electrolyte. (c) 2005 The Electrochemical Society.

Abstract:A blank comparison group of lithium salt-free electrolyte system, replacing the lithium salt of electrolyte with a redox shuttle agent, is constructed to give targeted research on the single role of lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) salt, especially of bis(oxalate)borate anions (BOB−) in the film-forming process. By combining and comparing all available studies, such as attenuated total reflectance (IR-ATR), X-Ray photoelectron diffraction spectrum (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests and quantum chemical calculation, the formation mechanism of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film is proposed. Results reveal that the prior reduction of BOB− anions can postpone the reduction potential and hinder the decomposition rate of carbonate solvents, but promote the formation of a dense, conductive and effective SEI film. This work provides a novel way to investigate the film-forming mechanism and has guiding significance for revealing the effect of other kinds of lithium salts on the surface film formation.

Abstract:The electrochemical stability of lithium bis(oxatlato) borate (LiBOB) containing solid polymer electrolyte has been evaluated both by inert electrode and real cathodes. Enhanced intrinsic anodic stability and decreased interface impedance, are obtained by addition of nano-sized MgO to PEO20-LiBOB. It is also found that the LiBOB-containing SPEs exhibit prominent kinetic stability between 3.0 and 4.5 V. For cells using SPEs as the separators, good cycling performance is obtained for real 4 V class cathodes material LiNi 1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 and LiCoO 2. The LiPEO20-LiBOBLiNi1/3Co 1/3Mn1/3O2 cell takes an initial capacity of 156.8 mAh g-1, with retention of 142.5 mAh g-1 after 20 cycles at 0.2C-rate. The cell also works well up to 1C-rate. The addition of nano-sized MgO into PEO20-LiBOB readily reduces the irreversible capacity per cycle, both for LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn 1/3O2 and LiCoO2 cathodes. In addition, the critical role of LiBOB in obtaining kinetic stability and passivating ability towards cathodes are specially discussed. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Crystalline LiBOB which we prepared in our lab was observed by SEM method. Impurities of product were examined by XRD experiment. The decomposition voltage under a deoxidized current was 1V vs. Li(+)/Li, and under a oxidized current the electrochemical stabilities is up to 5V vs. Li(+)/Li. The conductivity of two kinds of LiBOB based electrolytes were both lower than that of LiPF(6) based electrolyte. Through galvanostatic cycling test of the half cells it could be observed that LiBOB cell has a better capacity retention than that of LiPF(6) cell.

Abstract:The stability of the lithium bis(oxalate) borate (LiBOB) salt against lithium peroxide (Li2O2) formation in an aprotic LiO2 (Li-air) battery is investigated. From theoretical and experimental findings, we find that the chemical decomposition of LiBOB in electrolytes leads to the formation lithium oxalate during the discharge of a Li-O-2 cell. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the formation of lithium oxalate as the reaction product is exothermic and therefore is thermodynamically feasible. This reaction seems to be independent of solvents used in the Li-O-2 cell, and therefore LiBOB is probably not suitable to be used as the salt in Li-O-2 cell electrolytes.

Abstract:The impact of lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) electrolyte additive on the performance of full lithium-ion cells pairing the high-voltage spinel cathode with the graphite anode was systematically investigated. Adding 1 wt % LiBOB to the electrolyte significantly improved the cycle life and Coulombic efficiency of the full-cells at 30 and 45 degrees C. As the LiBOB was preferentially oxidized and reduced compared with LiBOB-free electrolyte during cycling, their relative contributions to the improved capacity retention in full-cells was gauged by pairing fresh and LiBOB-treated electrodes with various combinations. The results indicated that a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on graphite produced by the reduction of the LiBOB additive is more robust and stable against Mn dissolution problem during cycling at 45 degrees C compared with the SEI formed by the reduction of the base (LiBOB-free) electrolyte. In addition, a 3 wt % LiBOB-added electrolyte showed reduced Mn dissolution compared with the base electrolyte after storing the fully charged Li1-xNi0.42Fe0.08Mn1.5O4 (LNFMO) electrodes at 60 degrees C for one month. It is believed that LiBOB aids in stabilizing the electrolyte by trapping the PF5, i.e., sequestering the radical which tends to oxidize EC and DEC electrolyte solvents. Thus, oxidation is suppressed on the carbon black particles in the positive electrode, as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses. As a result, HF generation is suppressed, which in turn results in less Mn dissolution from the spinel cathode.
Elucidating the Effect of Borate Additive in High‐Voltage Electrolyte for Li‐Rich Layered Oxide Materials

Abstract:Lithium‐rich layered oxides (LRLO) have attracted great interest for high‐energy Li‐ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity. However, capacity decay and voltage fade during the cycling impede the practical application of LRLO. Herein, the use of lithium bis‐(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) as an electrolyte additive is reported to improve the cycling stability in high voltage LRLO/graphite full cells. The cell with LiBOB‐containing electrolyte delivers 248 mAh g−1 initial capacity and shows no capacity decay after 70 cycles as well as 95.5% retention after 150 cycles over 4.5 V cycling. A systematic mechanism study for the LiBOB‐enabled cycling performance improvement is conducted. Analytical electron microscopy under cryo‐condition confirms the formation of a uniform interphase and less phase transformation on the LRLO particle, accompanied by less voltage decay in the cathode. The formation of B‐F species is identified in the cycled electrolyte, elucidating the HF scavenger effect of LiBOB. Due to less HF corrosion on both electrode interphases, a reduced amount of transition metal dissolution and redeposition on the graphite is proved, thereby mitigating the capacity decay in LRLO/graphite full cells. These findings suggest that the borate additive is a promising strategy to optimize high voltage electrolyte for the industrialization of LRLO. This work reports the use of lithium bis‐(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) as an electrolyte additive to improve the cycling stability in high‐voltage LRLO/graphite full cells. The cell with the LiBOB‐containing electrolyte delivers 248 mAh g−1 initial capacity and shows no capacity decay after 70 cycles and 95.5% retention after 150 cycles. The HF scavenger effect of LiBOB in high‐voltage electrolytes is also studied with multiple advanced characterization tools in this work.

Simultaneous Stabilization of LiNi0.76Mn0.14Co0.10O2 Cathode and Lithium Metal Anode by LiBOB Additive.

Abstract:The long-term cycling performance, rate capability, and voltage stability of lithium (Li) metal batteries with LiNi0.76Mn0.14Co0.10O2 (NMC76) cathodes is greatly enhanced by lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) additive in the LiPF6-based electrolyte. With 2% LiBOB in the electrolyte, a Li vertical bar NMC76 cell is able to achieve a high capacity retention of 96.8% after 200 cycles at C/3 rate (1C=200mAg(-1)), which is the best result reported for a Ni-rich NMC cathode coupled with Li metal anode. The significantly enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the stabilization of both the NMC76 cathode/electrolyte and Li-metal-anode/electrolyte interfaces. The LiBOB-containing electrolyte not only facilitates the formation of a more compact solid-electrolyte interphase on the Li metal surface, it also forms a enhanced cathode electrolyte interface layer, which efficiently prevents the corrosion of the cathode interface and mitigates the formation of the disordered rock-salt phase after cycling. The fundamental findings of this work highlight the importance of recognizing the dual effects of electrolyte additives in simultaneously stabilizing both cathode and anode interfaces, so as to enhance the long-term cycle life of high-energy-density battery systems.

Abstract:The formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on graphite in a lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB)based electrolyte was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effects of SEI film on the cycleabilities of graphite were examined at room temperature (25 degrees C) and at high temperature (70 degrees C). Results showed that the SEI film was formed at around 1.7 V and BOB- ions were reduced to oxalate, which was one of the components of the SEI film. EIS showed that the impedance of the SEI film decreased during the charge/discharge cycle and this was favorable for cycle stability. Whether it was at room temperature or at high temperature, the graphite had better cycleability in the LiBOB-based electrolyte than in the LiPF6-based electrolyte.

Abstract:In recent years, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become widely used in everyday applications such as portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Despite this, the electrochemical performance of LIBs cannot meet the energy demands of rapidly growing technological evolutions. And although significant progress has been made in the development of corresponding anodes based primarily on carbon, oxide and silicon materials, these materials still possess shortcomings in current LIB applications. For example, graphite exhibits safety concerns due to an operating potential close to that of lithium (Li) metal plating whereas Li4Ti5O12 possesses low energy density for high operation potential and silicon experiences limited cyclability for large volume expansion during charging/discharging. Alternatively, polyanionic compounds such as (PO4)3–, (SiO4)4–, (SO4)2– and (BO3)3− as electrode materials have gained increasing attention in recent years due to their ability to stabilize structures, adjust redox couples and provide migration channels for "guest" ions, resulting in corresponding electrode materials with long-term cycling, high energy density and outstanding rate capability. Based on these advantages and combined with recent findings in terms of silicate anodes, this review will summarize the recent progress in the development of polyanion-based anode materials for LIBs and sodium-ion batteries. Furthermore, this review will present our latest research based on polyanion groups such as (GeO4)4– to compensate for the lack of available studies and to provide our perspective on these materials.
Compatibility between electrode materials and LiBOB electrolyte containing ACN

Abstract:The compatibility between the electrolyte of lithium bis(oxalato)borate(LiBOB) and the materials of cathode and anode as well as the rate capability of the cathode material at room temperature was studied by cyclic voltammetry,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and charge-discharge cycle testes.The effect of acetonitrile(ACN) on electrochemical performance of the electrolyte of LiBOB was investigated.The results showed that LiFePO4in the electrolyte of LiBOB showed a remarkable electrochemical performance.The cycle performance was improved when the ACN was added.The anode of shapecontrolled micrographite(SCMG) formed stable and effective SEI film in the electrolyte of LiBOB.The cycle performance declined,while the reversible capacity of the first cycle was promoted a little when ACN was added.

Abstract:Indonesia is rich with natural lithium resource that is expected to be utilized in lithium-ion batteries. Currently brine or sea water is the main source of lithium raw material because it is less costly to extract lithium from brine water than it is from lithium ores. This study aimed to determine the effects of substituting the source of lithium raw material from brine water on the synthesis of LiBOB (lithium bis oxalate borate) electrolyte for lithium-ion battery. LiBOB is synthesized in powder metallurgy method through mixing and heating at multiple stages in vacuum. The materials employed consisted of oxalic acid (H2C2O4.2H2O), boric acid (H3BO3), and lithium sources (Lithium hydroxide (LiOH.2H2O), and Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) from both pro-analysis and technical materials) with the molarity ratio of 2: 1: 1, when using lithium carbonate the molarity ratio is 2: 0.5: 1. The sample variations were based on the different lithium sources, with sample L1 containing Li2CO3 (analytical grade), sample L2 containing LiOH.2H2O (analytical grade), and sample L3 containing the mix of 50 % Li2CO3 from both analytical grade and technical grade materials (brine water as lithium source). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that LiBOB hydrate and impurity phases generated. Those results supported by the presence of the functional groups of LiBOB, although shifts of wavelengths occurred. The LiBOB hydrate phases produced in samples L1, L2, and L3 were 33.4, 70.2, and 74.2 %. The morphological analysis with SEM (scanning electron microscopy) showed that sample L3 exhibited the smoothest surface and similar formation to sample L2. EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopies) is testing produced comparative impedance among samples L1: L2: L3 of 22 : 6 : 3. The sample L3 exhibited the smallest impedance because the SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) formation on the surface of negative electrode could be control. The CV (cyclic voltammetry) testing indicated that sample L3 was more reversible and possessed higher current speed and stability than sample L2.

Abstract:A new unsymmetrical lithium salt containing C6H4O22−[dianion of 1,2-benzenediol] and C2O42−[dianion of oxalic acid], lithium [1,2-benzenediolato(2-)-O,O′ oxalato]borate (LBDOB), is synthesized and characterized. The thermal characteristics of it, lithium bis[1,2-benzenediolato(2-)-O,O′]borate (LBBB) and lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) are examined by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The thermal decomposition in Ar begins at 250, 256, and 302°C for LBBB, LBDOB, and LBOB, respectively. The order of the stability toward oxidation of these organoborates is LBOB>LBDOB>LBBB, which is in the same order of the thermal stability. The cyclic voltammetry study shows that the LBDOB solution in PC is stable up to 3.7V vs. Li+/Li. They are soluble in common organic solvents. Ionic dissociation properties of LBDOB and its derivatives are examined by conductivity measurements in PC, PC+DME, EC+DME, PC+THF, EC+THF (molar ratio 1:1) solutions. Understanding Boron Chemistry as the Surface Modification and Electrolyte Additive for Co‐Free Lithium‐Rich Layered Oxide

Abstract:Lithium‐rich layered oxide (LRLO), modified with a 15 nm lithium borate (LBO) surface modification and using lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) as an electrolyte additive, achieves 82% capacity retention after 400 cycles. The surface modification stabilizes the electrode–electrolyte interphase, reducing HF acid formation and enhancing cycling stability for practical Li‐ion battery applications. Lithium‐rich layered oxide (LRLO) stands out as a highly promising cathode material for the next generation of Li‐ion batteries, owing to its exceptional lithium storage capacity. The absence of cobalt in LRLO's composition provides an additional advantage, enabling cost‐effective production and thereby improving the feasibility of large‐scale manufacturing. Despite these promising attributes, LRLO has encountered challenges related to poor cycling performance and severe voltage decay, impeding its practical application. In addressing these challenges, a surface modification technique involving lithium borate (LBO) is employed through a dry coating method. The LBO‐coated LRLO exhibits a uniform surface layer with a thickness of 15 nm. Furthermore, the performance of LBO‐coated LRLO in a full cell is synergistically enhanced when combined with lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) as an electrolyte additive. A discharge capacity retention of 82% is achieved after 400 cycles at room temperature. These substantial improvements are attributed to the continual reaction between boron species on the LRLO cathode surface and PF6− anions in the electrolyte. This reaction generates BF4− and suppresses HF acid formation during the high voltage charging process, demonstrating LRLO's potential for practical implementation.

Abstract:The long-term cycling performance, rate capability, and voltage stability of lithium (Li) metal batteries with LiNi0.76Mn0.14Co0.10O2 (NMC76) cathodes is greatly enhanced by lithium bis(oxalato)borate (LiBOB) additive in the LiPF6-based electrolyte. With 2% LiBOB in the electrolyte, a Li vertical bar NMC76 cell is able to achieve a high capacity retention of 96.8% after 200 cycles at C/3 rate (1C=200mAg(-1)), which is the best result reported for a Ni-rich NMC cathode coupled with Li metal anode. The significantly enhanced electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the stabilization of both the NMC76 cathode/electrolyte and Li-metal-anode/electrolyte interfaces. The LiBOB-containing electrolyte not only facilitates the formation of a more compact solid-electrolyte interphase on the Li metal surface, it also forms a enhanced cathode electrolyte interface layer, which efficiently prevents the corrosion of the cathode interface and mitigates the formation of the disordered rock-salt phase after cycling. The fundamental findings of this work highlight the importance of recognizing the dual effects of electrolyte additives in simultaneously stabilizing both cathode and anode interfaces, so as to enhance the long-term cycle life of high-energy-density battery systems.
