Abstract:In this paper, the sinter pot experiments were carried out by adding different contents of hematite concentrate, the result shows that hematite concentrate content of mixed material has seriously influence on the finished sinter mineralogy, meantime it is found that sinter has better metallurgical property when the content of hematite concentrate is during 15%-16.5%, when the proportion of hematite concentrate was increased in the sintering raw materials will not only reduce the yield of sinter, but also decrease the content of needle-like calcium ferrite which has the excellent deoxidation performance.

Abstract:The high temperature sintering characteristics of ten kinds of iron ore fines in Masteel,such as assimilation,liquid phase fluidity,self-strength of bonding phase,the forming ability of SFCA and intergrowth bonding strength etc.were studied in this paper.Based on this,according to complementary principle of high temperature characteristics of iron ore fines,five groups of sintering proportioning optimization schemes were designed and sintering pot test was carried out,and good sintering effect was achieved for all schemes.The feasibility of sintering proportioning optimization method based on high temperature characteristics of iron ore fines was verified,and countermeasures were provided for Masteel to fully utilize iron ore fines resources,reduce proportioning cost and improve sinter quality.

Abstract:One of the most concerned quality in iron ore thermal agglomeration process is the mechanical strength of sinter and thus the size degradation of sinter product which occurs during transportation could be minimized. Due to the complexities of porous structure and brittle nature of sinter, it is difficult to determine their influences on the mechanical properties. Under this prospect, pilot-scale sinter pot tests have been carried out under the conditions of a wide range of coke rates. X-ray computed tomography was applied to reconstruct the sinter porous structures with the resolution of 40 µm and following simulations for obtaining the distribution of stress and displacement in the compressed sinter samples at the micro level were performed. The strength of sinter product was also experimentally evaluated by the shatter and tumbler tests at the macro level. The obtained experimental and numerical results showed that, sinters produced in the low coke rate cases have relatively large porosity and irregular structures, exhibiting more locations with high stress values including bridges with the small cross-sections and pore-shaped notches with the small fillet radius. Those sinters are more easily to be breaked at the macro scale, resulting in their smaller mean diameter and tumbler strength index compared to the sinters under the condition of high coke rates. The increase of coke rate greatly increases the maximum bed temperature in flame front, promoting the melt formation, material coalescence and densification therefore sinters with better mechanical property could be achieved.

Abstract:This work reports effect of the powder grain size distributions on the bending strength sintered Ni-30%Fe alloys obtained from mixed coarse-fine micron size metal powders. Two dissimilar particle sizes of Ni and Fe metal powders were mixed by subjecting them to translational and rotational agitations using the T2F Turbula Shaker Mixer. The mixed powders were moulded using graphite dies and sintered in vacuum and at constant pressure using Spark Plasma Sintering furnace (HHPD-25). The ratios of the two metals were varied as well as the sintering temperature and time. The morphology and microstructures of both powders and sinters were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (JSM-7600F) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) facilities. The phases in the sintered specimens were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The densities of the samples were determined, The Vickers microhardness at room temperature and bending strength of the sintered alloy specimens were measured. Comparatively, low heating rate (50 oC/min) produced enhanced microstructures hence higher bonding, bending strength and densification than samples at high heating rate (150 oC/min).

Abstract:In this study, varying powder particle size fractions (<25, 25 to 45, 45 to 63 µm) of a TRIP steel powder were compacted by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Densification initiated at a slightly lower temperature with decreasing particle size due to increasing green density. With decreasing powder particle size fraction, the as-sintered materials exhibited smaller grain sizes. Compression tests revealed a slight decrease of the compressive yield strength with increasing particle size and, accordingly, larger grain size. A few large deformation bands formed in bigger grains, while many thin deformation bands were formed in smaller grains. α′-Martensite nuclei formed successively inside the deformation bands, reducing the mean free path of (partial) dislocation slip. Due to the size of the deformation bands, α′-martensite formation started at lower strains with increasing particle size. When α′-martensite formation was initiated, work hardening was influenced more by α′-martensite formation than by the grain size of the steel matrix. Hence, work hardening increased with increasing particle size.

Abstract:The contributions of three operating parameters (moisture content, hydrated lime addition, magnetite concentrate substitution) to the crushing strength and Young's modulus of granules in each stage of iron ore sintering were studied by applying the Taguchi method. The results indicated that the strength properties of the iron ore granules were greatly affected by its structure, which is composed of inner nuclei and an outer adhering layer. The granules with a thick adhering layer showed a clear changing trend in strength with increasing temperature, whereas those with a thin adhering layer showed additional fluctuations as their force-displacement responses were greatly determined by the nuclei. The granules with a thick adhering layer were generally more deformable and easier to break than that those with the thin adhering layer in most states. The signal-to-noise ratio and variance analysis indicated that moisture was the dominant parameter affecting the strength properties of the iron ore granules, as this factor controls the primary granule structure and material distribution. With the progress of sintering, the contribution of moisture to the quality characteristics gradually decreased (from similar to 80% to 50%), whereas the contributions of hydrated lime and magnetite concentrate increased correspondingly (from similar to 5% to 20%). Abstract:Powder compaction and sintering are critical stages of powder metallurgy in manufacturing high performance particle reinforced metal matrix composites. In this paper, particulate scale numerical investigations on the warm compaction and solid-state sintering of TiC/316L composite powders with different particle size ratios (PSRs, R316L/RTiC) and TiC contents were performed using multi-particle finite element method (MPFEM) in two dimensions. The effects of PSR and TiC content, compaction pressure and temperature, and sintering temperature on the compaction and sintering processes were comprehensively analyzed. On this basis, a variety of macro- and microscopic analyses were conducted to further identify the densification dynamics and mechanisms. The results indicate that green compacts with higher relative density and more uniform stress distribution can be readily achieved by warm compaction. The large-scale plastic deformation of 316L particles caused by the cooperative actions of temperature and pressure is the main densification mechanism in warm compaction. During solid-state sintering, the improvement of relative density is mainly achieved by the vanishing or shrinkage of residual pores along with the growth of sintering necks, accompanied by the deformation of 316L particles. Large displacements of particles mainly occur in contacting areas of adjacent particles. Moreover, the equivalent stress in 316L particles is smaller than that in TiC particles. With the increase of PSR and TiC content, lower relative density of green compacts and sintered parts were obtained and more irregular morphologies of 316L particles can be observed.

Abstract:The influence of particle size distributions of submicron high-purity α-alumina powders on forming and sintering behavior in an agglomerate-free condition were investigated. Nine kinds of alumina powders with the same median diameter (dPM50=0.53 μm) and different geometrical standard deviations (σ=1.2-2.0) in lognormal particle size distributions were prepared by blending spherical-like commercial α-alumina powders, and were also adjusted to near ideal distributions so that σ of a mass distribution was comparable with one of the number distribution. In order to prevent the agglomerate and contamination of the impurities, forming was performed by means of the colloid process, i.e., the slip casting method using the porous alumina molds. Relative densities of green compacts and bodies sintered at up to 1300°C increased with increasing σ, but densities of bodies sintered at 1500°C or more increased with decreasing σ. The width of the grain size distributions of those bodies increased with increasing σ. The abnormal grains over 30 μm of the grain size generated at more than 1.7 of σ for alumina bodies sintered at 1700°C and those grains contained many pores. The powder with a narrow distribution in size is better to fabricate a translucent material.

Abstract:Depletion trend of high-grade iron ore resources have become significant due to the recent increase in world steel production. Therefore, effective utilization of low-grade and low-quality ores has been and will be strongly required. Since iron ore concentrates obtained by beneficiation processes are usually fine, e.g., less than 100 mu m in particles size, it is difficult to directly use a large amount of them to the sintering process. To cope with such a problem, the composite sintering process, namely MEBIOS (Mosaic EmBedding Iron Ore Sintering), has been proposed, which pre -granulates fine ores to be green pellets. The present study deals with the effects of limestone size and substituting ratio with burnt lime on the compression strength of the sintered pellets. The green pellets were prepared using fine hematite ores, limestone and burnt lime and sintered at up to 1300 degrees C. The compression strength of the sintered pellet increased with a decrease in particles size of limestone when it was less than 500 pm, although relatively higher strength was obtained for the case using limestone having 500-1000 mu m in size. The porosity of the pellets prepared by the partial substitution of limestone with burnt lime decreased and their compression strength increased with an increase in the substitution ratio. It seems due to the dispersion effect of extreme ly fine slacked lime particles formed by the hydration reaction of burnt lime.

Abstract:Al 2O 3 particle with the sizes of 2 μm,7 μm and 10 μm and volume factions of 5%, 10% and 15% reinforced Cu matrix composites were fabricated by briquette sintering plus repress and resintering. The results show that sintering process is a dominant factor influencing the density of Al 2O 3/Cu composites, and the repress and resintering can further improve the density and mechanical properties of the composites. Microstructure observation indicates that Al 2O 3 particle is uniformly distributed in the matrix, exhibiting the good bonding in interface.

Abstract:Iron and steelmaking process, especially the iron ore sintering process is regarded as a major fixed generation source of PM2.5. This study aims to obtain fundamental knowledge on the grain size and chemical composition of PM2.5 formed during sintering process. A laboratory-scale sintering simulator was used to simulate the iron ore sintering process, and a part of the outlet gas was introduced to a cascade impactor to collect the PM2.5 in particle size stepwise. Concentration of PM in the outlet gas became highest when the admixing ratio of CaO was set at 20 mass%, and it appears that there are two different formation patterns of PM in different size. Obtained PM with the particles size from 0.25 to 2.5 pm were composed of hematite, calciumferrite and some gangue materials. The liquidus temperature of CaO (20%) - Fe2O3 is lower than the maximum sintering bed temperature and therefore iron oxides in the melt tend to be reduced at coke surface promote to form CO bubbles. Then the bubbles move to the melt surface and burst forming many fine droplets. PM with the particles size less than 0.25 mu m contains sulfates of Na, K and Ca in addition to hematite and calciumferrite. When coke containing a certain sulfur was replaced by graphite, the major components of the formed PM (-0.25 mu m) was chlorides of Na and K.

Abstract:In order to investigate the influence on mechanical properties of grain size in the near-micrometer regime, samples of Fe with nearly full density were prepared using the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique with average grain sizes of 1.0 mu m, 2.6 mu m and 4.0 mu m. In each of these samples the resulting sintered material was in a nearly fully-recrystallized condition with a random texture. The mechanical properties of the samples were examined via tensile testing. A strong dependence of the tensile flow characteristics on the average grain size was observed in this size regime, with the 1.0 mu m grain-size sample showing a very high strength, but no uniform elongation and a large yield drop developed in the 2.6 mu m grain-size sample. Analysis of the grain size dependence of yield strength suggests a positive Hall-Petch deviation from the expected grain boundary strengthening in the SPS Fe samples, assuming a typical range of values for the grain boundary strength (Hall-Petch coefficient). Pre-compression of the 2.6 mu m grain-size prior to tensile testing sample results in a removal of the yield drop and a corresponding large decrease in the yield stress by as much as 145 MPa. The observations suggest that the positive Hall-Petch deviation seen previously in the near-micrometer regime for fully recrystallized Al and Cu may also be present in Fe, and highlight the likely importance of dislocation source hardening in this grain size regime.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of varying powder size on porosity, pore parameters, and intermetallic phase reaction during the reactive sintering of porous TiAl alloys. Ti52Al48 alloys were prepared using coarse (200 mesh) and fine (325 mesh) Ti powders through elemental powder metallurgy and were subsequently sintered at different temperatures, 600 and 1200 °C. Our findings reveal a consistent pore morphology and intermetallic phase microstructure across both alloys. However, samples containing fine Ti powder exhibited a higher number density of small pores compared to those incorporating coarse Ti powders. Additionally, alloys prepared with fine Ti powders demonstrated a higher porosity than those prepared with coarse powders. Consequently, fine Ti powder promoted enhanced diffusion between Ti and Al during sintering, as reflected by the lower onset temperature and enthalpy of intermetallic reaction during sintering.

Abstract:Abstract This work studied the effect of particle size gradation on the structure and sintering properties of alumina ceramics manufactured by stereolithography after sintering, including room temperature flexural strength, sintering shrinkage, porosity and microstructure morphology. Seven different particle size gradations from coarse to fine were studied, and each particle size gradation was coarse particles: fine particles=6:4. With the increase of the sintering temperature, the degree of sintering and the bonding strength of the interface increased, the shrinkage in all directions, and the bending strength and the closed porosity increased, the open porosity decreased. For the same sintering temperature, the flexural strength and shrinkage in all directions decreased and the open porosity increased with the increase of particle size. The ratio of the height (4mm) shrinkage of each particle size to the length (50mm) shrinkage is about 1.5 times. Due to the presence of the lateral edge resin layer, the width shrinkage of the coarse particles was different from the length shrinkage but closer to the height shrinkage. The width shrinkage gradually approached the length shrinkage as the particle size decreased. When the gradation ratio is the same, and the particle size was ten times different (30μm/5μm, 3μm/0.5μm; 20μm/3μm, 2μm/0.3μm), there was a big difference. When the sintering temperature was above 1500℃, the differences of sintering properties of the comparison groups are 2~10 times. Considering the alumina-based ceramic core, 20/3 has been evaluated comprehensively. It maintains excellent flexural strength and porosity under the condition of slight shrinkage.

Abstract:Nanostructured spinel(Ni_(0.2)Zn_(0.6)Cu_(0.2)Fe_2O_4) powders were fabricated by a citrate precursor sol-gel method.The original particle size was dominated by different calcining temperature.The nanocrystal powders can be sintered by different sintering methods under a low temperature(≤950℃).The sintering behavior,microstructures and electromagnetic properties of ferrite ceramics were investigated by X-ray diffractometer(XRD),transmission electron microscope(TEM),scanning electron microscope(SEM) and measurements of permeability and resistivity.The effect of particle size on sintering,microstructure and electromagnetic properties were obtained,and we achieved high performance NiCuZn ferrite with ultrafine microstructure and high initial permeability of up to 1000 and DC resistivity above 10~(10)Ω·cm.

Abstract:Abstract Aiming at dense sintering of silicon carbide ceramic, magnesium alloy powder was taken as additive, and silicon carbide powders with two different particle size were sintered by the same hot pressure sintering process. Result shows that ceramic sintered by the powder with larger particle size is denser. Magnesium and carbon segregation is observed in the sample prepared by powder with smaller particle size, in which silicon carbide particles cannot be uniformly dispersed by sintering additives. However, sintering additives distribute homogeneously among silicon carbide particles in the sample prepared by powder with larger particle size, which can effectively play a bonding role. In the selection of liquid phase sintering additives, particle size matching of raw material and sintering additives should be emphasized.

Abstract:<p>It is well known that changes in the starting powder can have a significant impact on the laser powder bed fusion process and subsequent part performance. Relationships between the powder particle size distribution and powder performance such as flowability and spreadability are generally known; however, links to part performance are not fully established. This study attempts to more precisely isolate the effect of particle size by using three customized batches of 17-4 PH stainless steel powders with small shifts in particle size distributions having non-intersecting cumulative size distributions, designated as Fine, Medium, and Coarse. It is found that the Fine powder has the worst overall powder performance with poor flow and raking during spreading while the Coarse powder has the best overall flow. Despite these differences in powder performance, the microstructures (i.e., porosity, grain size, phase, and crystallographic texture) of the built parts using the same process parameters are largely the same. Furthermore, the Medium powder produced parts with the highest mechanical properties (i.e., hardness and tensile strength) while the Fine and Coarse powders produced parts with effectively identical mechanical properties. Parts with good static mechanical properties can be produced from powders with a wide range of powder performance.</p>
