Abstract:The integration of electronic devices into composite materials is an inevitable requirement for the development of multifunctional composite materials and structures (MFCMS), which can achieve multiple functions to improve the efficiency of structure or system. In this study, the copper yarn/Kevlar yarn 3D woven spacer hybrid composites (3DWSHCs) with superb mechanical properties and structural integrity were proposed, which showed great potential applications in multifunctional composites. Based on 3DWSHCs, by weaving the conductive yarns in top and bottom layers into antenna structures through 3D weaving method, a 3D woven spacer composite antenna (3DWSCA) was realized for effective wireless signal transmitting. Consequently, the as-produced 3DWSCA overcomes the conflict between structure and electromagnetic performances of antenna, exhibiting superb structural integrity and superb radiation properties with a good impedance matching (S 11 value < − 20 dB) and a working frequency near the designed frequency of 2.45 GHz. Although conductive yarns were embedded in 3DWSHCs, they can maintain superb lightweight characterization with a low density of 0.7 g/cm 3 . In addition, the 3DWSHCs demonstrated higher mechanical properties in terms of flatwise compression (3.96 MPa) and edgewise compression strength (5.42 MPa) in comparison to 3D woven spacer composites (3DWSCs) without conductive yarns. Furthermore, 3DWSHCs showed superb structure stability, exhibiting suitable strength retention rates even after treated in extreme low/high temperatures. Considering the high conformability, lightweight, structure integrity and temperature tolerance characteristics, the proposed 3DWSHCs and 3DWSCA can be straightforwardly incorporated into the structural component of airplanes, satellites, or high-speed aircrafts, signifying great potential applications in multifunctional composites.
