Abstract:The concept of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) emerged in the last decade, with various applications proposed.It was envisioned that the ubiquitous sensing and communication devices would soon be integrated into our daily life, to provide information and convenience wherever and whenever we need.However, to date, we have yet to see mass adoption of such applications, mainly due to the lack of viable wireless sensing devices, as well as the fragmentation of the data storage, computing, and networking infrastructure.Recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing, as well as concurrent attempts in standardization in low-power wireless networking and security, are paving the way for the commercialization of WSN applications.With the commercial ecosystem getting in place and infrastructures becoming mature, the challenge lies in the research and development in low-cost, miniaturized, and self-sustaining circuits and systems, to realize sensing and wireless communication functionalities which are critical in the future WSN landscape.In this special issue, the latest research efforts on circuits and systems for wireless sensing are presented.10 research papers are published in this issue, covering a wide variety of topics including MAC and routing protocols for wireless sensor networks, integrated circuits, and devices for wireless sensors, as well as complete wireless sensor systems for real world applications.The highlights of these papers are summarized as follows."A 5 V-to-3.3V CMOS Linear Regulator with Three-Output Temperature-Independent Reference Voltages" by
Low-power, intelligent sensor hardware interface for medical data preprocessing

Abstract:This work proposes an interface design of a low-power programmable system on chip for intelligent wireless sensor nodes to reduce the overall power consumption of the heart disease monitoring system, by lending them the capability of processing complex functions and performing rapid computations on a large amount of data at the node. This facilitates the node to intelligently monitor a medical signal for impending events instead of transmitting the signal to the base station constantly. Lowering the transmission data rate decreases the transmission power consumption in a node, thereby lengthening the node life and in turn increasing the reliability of the network. This work also implements a thresholding technique, which controls the data transmission rate depending on the value of the monitored signal, and a cardiac monitoring system that performs computations at the node for the detection of either a skipped heart beat or a reduced heart rate variability, in which event the signal is transmitted to the base station for monitoring/recording or alerting the crew. The performance analysis of the system shows that there are reductions in the system power consumption and data transmission rate, which in turn reduces the network traffic and averts congestion.

Abstract:With the developing technologies of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, intelligent IoT (iIoT) is prevailing currently. Design and implementation of integrated IoT nodes with continuous perception capability are indispensable to realize various smart terminal devices, which would also be vital to reduce the power consumption, improve the real-time performance, and enhance the security/privacy of the IoT system. In this paper, we present the architecture of “Sensing with Computing” and its chip design for smart sensing applications, which would support multi-modal perception signal processing with multi-dimension extension ability. Specially, we explore the analog/mixed-signal circuit designs and algorithm-hardware co-design methodologies for perception signal processing, and we also study the multi-modal integration of novel sensors and their interface technologies. Additionally, some multi-modal smart sensing systems with “Sensing + Computing in Memory” mixed-signal chips would be fabricated, which would support typical always-on smart sensing tasks.

Abstract:A low-power wearable wireless sensor measuring both molecular biomarkers and physiological signals is proposed, where the former are measured by a microfluidic biosensing system while the latter are measured electrically. The low-power consumption of the sensor is achieved by an all-analog circuit implementing Analog Joint Source-Channel Coding (AJSCC) compression. The sensor is applicable to a wide range of biomedical applications that require real-time concurrent molecular biomarker and physiological signal monitoring.

Abstract:People-to-people (P2P) technology-assisted interconnections, embedded in a global environment, will be at the core of 21st century communications and will command the technological development of the future. The Internet-of-Things (IoT) comprises only machine-to-machine (M2M) communications handling only data and things. Expanding itself beyond IoT, the Internet-of-Everything (IoE) also incorporates intelligently the interaction of people and process (providing at a precise moment the correct knowledge to the exact person/machine). In general, IoT comprises all physical or cyber objects (things) with an address that can transmit information without human-to-machine interactions (data), while the IoE also involves communications (processing) among the users (people) and the whole universe of electronic gadgets. Further, they both operate with data acquired from analog sources, thus connecting two different realities, the analog (physical/real) and the digital (cyber/virtual) worlds. Since the interface between the two realms deals with analog signals, its mandatory functions involve sensing, measuring, filtering, converting, processing, and connecting, with the accuracy and precision of the analog layer ruling the entire system. Such interface integrates several analog and mixed-signal subsystems that include signal sensing, transmission and reception, frequency generation, energy harvesting (EH), in-memory processing, and data and power conversion. This paper presents state-of-the-art designs of the most critical building blocks of the analog/digital interface highlighting new and innovative circuit architectures and techniques. It addresses capacitive sensor interfaces, ultra-low-power wireless transceivers, key technologies for wireline transceivers, oscillators and frequency generators, integrated energy harvesting (EH) interfaces, in-memory processing, as well as, data and power converters, all exhibiting high-quality performance with low power consumption, high energy-efficiency and high speed, thus enabling a reliable and consistent development of the IoE while enlarging its frontiers.

Abstract:In this paper, a pair of integrated circuits for general purpose contactless measurement of diverse analog quantities, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, etc., is designed and fabricated in low-cost CMOS process. With one master and one slave chip, the chipset works on the principle of near-field communication (NFC), in which the master chip transmits magnetic energy to power up the slave chip and reads back digitized data via impedance modulation. Compared with traditional NFC-based radio-frequency identification systems, the self-locking operating frequency range is significantly extended from 8 to 12 MHz, providing a robust self-adaptive stability in impedance-varying environments. Apart from an analog port digitized by a built-in 12-bit self-calibrated analog-to-digital converter, up to three switch quantity ports are simultaneously integrated, enabling the chipset to monitor the change of static binary voltages, and provide additional control functions. The fabricated chipset has been successfully characterized and applied to contactless temperature measurement and the switch's on-off detection in a mass-produced household appliance product, showing great potential in various industrial and instrumental applications.
On a Novel Low-Cost Web-Based Power Sensor Via the Internet

Abstract:This paper presents the design of a novel distributed measurement system for power monitoring via the Internet, called IP Power Sensor. The IP Power Sensor, a typical application of smart network sensors, offers portable design architecture for Internet-based remote monitoring. Based on IEEE 1451 standard, the IP Power Sensor is composed of smart transducer interface module (STIM) and network capable application processor (NCAP). STIM performs the tasks of measuring electric-parameters and saving information from the sensor, while NCAP enables the sensor to enter into the Internet and work as a web server. Meanwhile, the web-based human–machine interface and the tool software have been developed to allow users to configure the IP Power Sensor's adjustable parameters, to upgrade its web pages, and to monitor and archive the real-time measured electric-parameters. Furthermore, a prototype is built for the performance tests in the real industrial fields. Experimental results show that the designed IP Power sensor is feasible for power monitoring.

It also implies that to improve the performance of a system one needs to employ advanced sensor solutions. The performance requirements vary from one application to another, but are always associated with accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility, range, power consumption, ease of installation, and maintenance. In the modern era of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, there is an ever-increasing need for low-cost, high-performing sensors in high volumes.

Abstract:Multiple parameter environment monitoring via wireless internet of thing sensors is growing rapidly, thanks to low power techniques of the node. More importantly, the ever more complex and highly efficient energy harvesting systems enable long-term continuous monitoring in inaccessible environments without needing to change the battery. This paper reviews existing energy harvesting modalities, including photovoltaic, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, electromagnetic, and vibration, together with circuit techniques of interfacing power management circuits for energy harvesters. Moreover, techniques used to interface with multiple mode energy harvesters to obtain a stable output power with optimal power efficiency are discussed as an emerging direction. The state-of-the-art energy harvesting systems together with future development trends are provided.

Abstract:Traditionally, most of the sensor interfaces must be tailored towards a specific application. This approach results in a high recurrent design cost and time to market. On the other hand, generic sensor interface design reduces the costs and offers a handy solution for multisensor applications. This paper presents a generic sensor interface chip (GSIC), which can read out a broad range of capacitive sensors. It contains capacitance-to-voltage converters, a switched-capacitor amplifier, an analog-to-digital converter, oscillators, clock generation circuits and a reference circuit. The system combines a very low-power design with a smart energy management, which adapts the current consumption according to the accuracy and speed requirements of the application. The GSIC is used in a pressure and an acceleration monitoring system. The pressure monitoring system achieves a current drain of 2.3 $mu{hbox {A}}$ for a 10-Hz sample frequency and an 8-bit accuracy. In the acceleration monitoring system, we measured a current of 3.3 $mu{hbox {A}}$ for a sample frequency of 10 Hz and an accuracy of 9 bits.

Abstract:Wearable wireless biomedical sensors will play important roles in future prevention-oriented healthcare. The strictly restricted power budget for the wearables rendered Nyquist sampling scheme unsuitable for this type of sensors. This is because the Nyquist sampling does not make use of the sparse characteristics of biomedical signal. In this paper we presented an alternative sampling scheme, called event-driven sampling, which takes advantage of sparsity in the biomedical signal and generates considerable fewer sampling points compared to Nyquist sampling scheme. Traditionally, event-driven ADC uses two comparators to generate outputs, which limits the minimum power of the ADC. We propose a new ADC structure that utilizes only one high-resolution comparator to generate output while a low-resolution comparator determines the direction of input. In this way, the minimum power of a level-crossing ADC can be reduced almost half compared to traditional level-crossing ADC.

Abstract:This paper presents an integrated ultra-low-power (ULP) wireless sensor system-on-chip (SoC) that can be used for voltage sensing in both Internet of Things applications and bio-potential monitoring. In order to increase the energy efficiency of the analog front-end (AFE), we propose a noise and power efficient push-pull low noise instrumentation amplifier (LNIA) with a built-in ripple reduction loop based on capacitor reuse. A low-power ISM-band harmonic injection locked on-off-keying transmitter (OOK-TX) is also implemented for energy efficient wireless connectivity. Circuit implementations, design considerations, and detailed analysis are presented to improve the overall energy efficiencies of the SoC including the AFE, TX and, the power management unit. The proposed ULP-SoC is fabricated in 130 nm CMOS technology with a total area of 1.92 mm<sup>2</sup>. The total power consumption of the proposed system-on-chip is $197.1~mu text{W}$ which is one of the lowest among state-of-the-art wireless sensor SoC.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) is an interface with the physical world that usually operates in random-sparse-event (RSE) scenarios. This article discusses main challenges of IoT chips: power consumption, power supply, artificial intelligence (AI), small-signal acquisition, and evaluation criteria. To overcome these challenges, many works recently aimed at IoT system design have emerged. This work reviews the architecture and circuit innovations that have contributed to IoT developments. This paper does not cover security of IoT. Event-driven architectures and nonuniform sampling ADCs significantly reduce the long-term average power. Besides, embedding AI engines in IoT nodes (AIoT) is one critical trend. The computing-in-memory technique improves the energy efficiency of the AI engine. Asynchronous spike neural networks (ASNNs) AI engines show low power potential. In addition to data processing, small-signal acquisition is also critical. The charge-domain analog-front-end (AFE) techniques such as floating inverter-based amplifiers improve energy efficiency. In addition to the above low power and high energy efficiency technologies, energy harvesting can also enhance the lifetime of AIoT devices. This article discusses recent ambient RF and natural energy harvesting approaches and high-efficiency DC-DC with a wide load range. Finally, novel evaluation criteria are introduced to establish benchmark standards for AIoT chips.

Abstract:Combining with on-chip heat management application scenario, firstly, this paper introduces the advantages of resistance-based frequency-domain readout all-digital temperature sensor and its poor ability to resist power supply fluctuation, as well as the existing solutions, the basic principle of digital temperature sensor with anti-power fluctuation suppression is analyzed, and its feasibility is proved by system modeling and theoretical analysis. Secondly, based on the proposed architecture, a new kind of near-digital temperature sensor architecture is proposed, which adopts a ring oscillator dominated by leakage current, thus it can work directly in a wide voltage range from 0.8 V to 1.3 V without the need for a separate regulator. Finally, to further optimize the power consumption, a delay cell structure with lower power consumption and stronger robustness is proposed to further reduce the overall power consumption. The results show that the improved temperature sensor achieves lower power consumption and higher energy efficiency while keeping a small area, and it is advanced compared with other high level temperature sensors.

Abstract:Sensor networks play an important role in our modern information society. These networks are used for a variety of activities in different domains, including traffic monitoring, environmental analysis, transport and personal health. In general, systems generate data in their own format with little or no associated semantics. As a result, data must be managed individually and significant human effort is required to analyze data and develop ad-hoc applications for different end-user requirements. The research presented here proposes a holistic and comprehensive approach to significantly reduce the human effort in analyzing networks of sensors. The goal is to facilitate any form of sensor network, enabling users to combine related semantics with sensor data, and facilitate the end-user transformation of data necessary to provide more complex query expressions, and thus meet the analytical requirements.
A universal intelligent system-on-chip based sensor interface

Abstract:The need for real-time/reliable/low-maintenance distributed monitoring systems, e.g., wireless sensor networks, has been becoming more and more evident in many applications in the environmental, agro-alimentary, medical, and industrial fields. The growing interest in technologies related to sensors is an important indicator of these new needs. The design and the realization of complex and/or distributed monitoring systems is often difficult due to the multitude of different electronic interfaces presented by the sensors available on the market. To address these issues the authors propose the concept of a Universal Intelligent Sensor Interface (UISI), a new low-cost system based on a single commercial chip able to convert a generic transducer into an intelligent sensor with multiple standardized interfaces. The device presented offers a flexible analog and/or digital front-end, able to interface different transducer typologies (such as conditioned, unconditioned, resistive, current output, capacitive and digital transducers). The device also provides enhanced processing and storage capabilities, as well as a configurable multi-standard output interface (including plug-and-play interface based on IEEE 1451.3). In this work the general concept of UISI and the design of reconfigurable hardware are presented, together with experimental test results validating the proposed device.
