Abstract:This work reports the preparation of new quaternary sulfides Cs2Ln3CuS8 (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Tb), their original crystal and electronic structures, and their magnetic properties. The sulfides were prepared using a reactive flux method from mixtures of Ln2S3 (EuS), Cs2S6, Cu2S, and S. They crystallize in a new type of structure (C2/m space group) and exhibit a layer-like crystal structure, which is a hybrid of those of the ACe2CuS6 series (A = Cs, K) and that of K2CeCu2S4. The values of the optical band gap calculated by the Kubelka-Munk equation are in the range of 1.2-2.62 eV depending on the nature of the Ln ion. The Cs2Gd3CuS8 compound displays relatively great magnetic refrigerating properties at cryogenic temperature with the mass entropy change (-ΔSM) reaching 19.5 J kg-1 K-1 at 3.5 K for ΔH = 5 T.

Abstract:The crystal structures of three new intermetallic ternary compounds in the LnNiSb3 (Ln=Pr, Nd and Sm) family have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. PrNiSb3, NdNiSb3 and SmNiSb3 all crystallize in an orthorhombic space group, Pbcm (No. 57), Z=12, with a=12.5700(2)Å, b=6.2010(4)Å, c=18.670(6)Å, and V=1431.64(11)Å3; a=12.5090(2)Å, b=6.1940(3)Å, c=18.3350(6)Å, and V=1420.61(9)Å3; and a=12.3900(1)Å, b=6.1760(3)Å, c=18.2650(6)Å, and V=1397.65(8)Å3, for Ln=Pr, Nd and Sm, respectively. These compounds consist of rare-earth atoms located above and below layers of nearly square, buckled Sb nets, along with layers of highly distorted edge- and face-sharing NiSb6 octahedra. Resistivity data indicate metallic behavior for all three compounds. Magnetization measurements show antiferromagnetic behavior with TN=4.5K (PrNiSb3), 4.6K (NdNiSb3), and 2.9K (SmNiSb3). Effective moments of 3.62μB, 3.90μB and 0.80μB are found for PrNiSb3, NdNiSb3 and SmNiSb3, respectively, and are consistent with Pr3+ (f2), Nd3+ (f3), and Sm3+ (f4).

Abstract:The first antimony oxychloride sulfide, namely, La3OSCl2[SbS3], has been designed by isovalent anion substitution strategy. It belongs to the polar hexagonal space group P63 mc (No. 186) with a = 9.327(5) Å, c = 7.075(5) Å, V = 533.0(5) Å3, and Z = 2. It is composed of three-dimensional (3D) cationic [La3OSCl2]3+ networks hosting covalent [SbS3] molecular anions. The 3D cationic [La3OSCl2]3+ are formed by the one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal columns of corner-shared [(Cl/S)La3] polyhedra propagating along the 63 axis situated in (0,0,z) and [OLa3] trigonal pyramids via corner-sharing. Moreover, the alternating [SbS3] and [OLa3] trigonal pyramids are arranged along the 3-fold axis located at (1/3, 2/3, z), generating a dipole moment component along the c-direction. Another remarkable structural motif is the occurrence of the empty octahedra formed by the disordered Cl/S anions, which further share the face to form 1D chains extending along the 63 axis located at (0,0,z). Interestingly, the occurrence of the isolated [La3SbOS3]4+ cubane-like clusters instead of the “chains of [La3SbOS3]4+” make the title compound distinct from the related La4OCl2S4 featuring common chains of [La4OS3]4+. The preliminary nonlinear optical (NLO) measurement indicates a moderate second-harmonic-generation (SHG) signal (ca. 0.7 × AgGaS2) at 2050 nm laser. Moreover, calculated birefringence for La3OSCl2[SbS3] is ∼0.269 at 2050 nm. In addition, the optical energy gap of 2.5 eV for La3OSCl2[SbS3] was derived, which can be assigned to the charge transition from the highest value of valence band derived dominantly from the of S 3p states to the lowest value of conduction band mainly made up of the Sb 5p and of La 5d states.

Abstract:New lanthanide thioantimonate(V) compounds, [Ln(en)3(H2O)x(mu(3-x)-SbS4)] (en = ethylenediamine, Ln = La, x = 0, Ia; Ln = Nd, x = 1, Ib) and [Ln(en)4]SbS4.0.5en (Ln = Eu, IIa; Dy, IIb; Yb, IIc), were synthesized under mild solvothermal conditions by reacting Ln2O3, Sb, and S in en at 140 degrees C. These compounds were classified as two types according to the molecular structures. The crystal structure of type I (Ia and Ib) consists of one-dimensional neutral [Ln(en)3(H2O)x(mu(3-x)-SbS(4))]infinity (x = 0 or 1) chains, in which SbS4(3-) anions act as tridentate or bidentate bridging ligands to interlink [Ln(en)3]3+ ions, while the crystal structure of type II (IIa, IIb, and IIc) contains isolated [Ln(en)4]3+ cations, tetrahedral SbS4(3-) anions, and free en molecules. A systematic investigation of the crystal structures of the five lanthanide compounds, as well as two reported compounds, clarifies the relationship between the molecular structure and the entity of the lanthanide(III) series, such as the stability of the lanthanide(III)-en complexes, the coordination number, and the ionic radii of the metals.

Abstract:Isostructural series of homologous silicides Lnn(n+1)+xNin(n+5)+ySi(n+1)(n+2)-z (n = 4–6) have been obtained with Ln = Ce, Pr and Gd at 1000 C. All of them crystallize in the hexagonal space group type P63/m, exhibit short unit cell c parameters and variable but strongly correlating a parameters (n = 4: a = 20.795–20.826(9), c = 3.994–4.041(1) Å; n = 5: a = 24.693–24.726(4), c = 4.000–4.066(1) Å, and n = 6: a = 28.716–28.760(1), c = 3.9983–4.0734(3) Å). The crystal structures are represented by fused oligomeric SrPtSb -type blocks – La-centered Ni6Si6 hexagonal prisms forming equilateral domains with the edge size equal to n. The polyanionic triangular motifs and the cationic components alternate along all crystallographic axes. The newly discovered compounds Lnn(n+1)+xNin(n+5)+ySi(n+1)(n+2)-z represent asymmetric higher-n Ni-rich compositional and structural mirrors to the rare reported Ln-rich representatives Ln(n+1)(n+2)Nin(n-1)+2Sin(n+1). Unit cell parameter trends and magnetic measurements suggest the intermediate valence character of the Ce atoms.

Abstract:We report on the novel heterometallic quaternary sulfides SrLnCuS3 (Ln = La, Nd, Tm), obtained as both single crystals and powdered samples. The structures of both the single crystal and powdered samples of SrLaCuS3 and SrNdCuS3 belong to the orthorhombic space group Pnma but are of different structural types, while both samples of SrTmCuS3 crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm with the structural type KZrCuS3. Three-dimensional crystal structures of SrLaCuS3 and SrNdCuS3 are formed from the (Sr/Ln)S7 capped trigonal prisms and CuS4 tetrahedra. In SrLaCuS3, alternating 2D layers are stacked, while the main backbone of the structure of SrNdCuS3 is a polymeric 3D framework [(Sr/Ln)S7]n, strengthened by 1D polymeric chains (CuS4)n with 1D channels, filled by the other Sr2+/Ln3+ cations, which, in turn, form 1D dimeric ribbons. A 3D crystal structure of SrTmCuS3 is constructed from the SrS6 trigonal prisms, TmS6 octahedra and CuS4 tetrahedra. The latter two polyhedra are packed together into 2D layers, which are separated by 1D chains (SrS6)n and 1D free channels. In both crystal structures of SrLaCuS3 obtained in this work, the crystallographic positions of strontium and lanthanum were partially mixed, while only in the structure of SrNdCuS3, solved from the powder X-ray diffraction data, were the crystallographic positions of strontium and neodymium partially mixed. Band gaps of SrLnCuS3 (Ln = La, Nd, Tm) were found to be 1.86, 1.94 and 2.57 eV, respectively. Both SrNdCuS3 and SrTmCuS3 were found to be paramagnetic at 20-300 K, with the experimental magnetic characteristics being in good agreement with the corresponding calculated parameters.

Abstract:Sb4O5Br2 crystallizes plate‐shaped in the monoclinic space group P21/c with the lattice parameters a=660.82(5) pm, b=513.71(4) pm, c=1346.35(9) pm and β=97.876(3)° for Z=2. Its crystal structure contains ∞2 {[Sb4O5]2+} layers with connected [(Sb1)O3+1]5− ψ1‐units and undisturbed pyramidal [(Sb2)O3]3− ψ1‐units, where the free electron pair is counted as a pseudo‐ligand (ψ). The bromide anions required for charge compensation of these cationic ∞2 {[Sb4O5]2+} layers form single sheets and are only bonded via van‐der‐Waals interactions in this crystal structure, as the nearest distance to antimony cations is at least 300 pm. NdSb2O4Br crystallizes plate‐shaped in the monoclinic space group P21/c as well, but with the lattice parameters a=896.24(6) pm, b=801.16(5) pm, c=799.27(5) pm and β=92.129(3)° for Z=4. The [NdO8]13− polyhedra are linked to each other via four edges and thus form fluorite‐related layers ∞2 {[NdO 8/2e ]5−}, which run parallel to the (100) plane. The [SbO3]3− anions share vertices to build chains ∞1 {[SbO 2/2v O 1/1t ]−} along [001], which align parallel within the (100) plane. The isolated Br− anions arrange in layers and show a minimum distance of 319 pm to the next Sb3+ cation. ErSb2O4Br crystallizes plate‐shaped in the non‐centrosymmetric tetragonal space group P4212 with the lattice parameters a=774.76(4) pm, c=899.53(6) pm and c/a=1.161 for Z=4. The erbium‐oxygen environment appears to be roughly the same as in NdSb2O4Br, so the main difference is the linkage of the ψ1‐[SbO3]3− units. Four of these [SbO3]3− anions assemble in a ring structure ∞0 {[Sb4O8]4−} by sharing corners. Layers of rings are located in the (001) plane and almost planar bromide‐anion slabs assemble between the antimony‐oxygen layers. In this article, all three crystal structures are compared with each other and single‐crystal Raman spectra were recorded and analyzed for NdSb2O4Br and ErSb2O4Br.

Abstract:Two new lanthanide sulfates [C6H14N2]2[Ln2(SO4)4(H2O)4][SO4]·6H2O (Ln = Pr 1, Nd 2) have been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and TGA. Single crystal X-ray diffraction illuminates that both 1 and 2 crystallize in orthorhombic crystal system, space group Pbna with cell dimensions: a = 10.1362(13) Å, b = 13.4782(17) Å, c = 25.565(3) Å, V = 3492.6(8) Å3, Z = 4 for 1; a = 10.1243(12) Å, b = 13.4438(16) Å, c = 25.550(3) Å, V = 3477.6(7) Å3, Z = 4 for 2. Structure analysis indicates that both 1 and 2 are layered structures and the sulfate ions as well as the organic templates reside among the layers. Magnetic property of compound 1 was investigated further.

Strongly Correlated Electrons

Abstract:The antimonides RE2Ir3Sb4 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) were synthesized by arc-melting of the elements and subsequent annealing or via high-frequence melting. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and the four structures were refined from sin-gle-crystal X-ray diffraction data: Pr2Ir3Sb4-type, Pnma, Z = 4, a = 1621.9(2), b = 458.60(8), c = 1099.8(1) pm, wR2 = 0.036, 1558 F2 values for La2Ir3Sb4, a = 1616.6(8), b = 456.5(2), c = 1094.8(5) pm, wR2 = 0.092, 1080 F2 values for Ce2Ir3Sb4, a = 1613.0(5), b = 454.9(2), c = 1094.1(5) pm, wR2 = 0.057, 1428 F2 values for Pr2Ir3Sb4, and a = 1609.8(6), b = 452.9(2), c = 1092.3(5) pm, wR2 = 0.052, 1472 F2 values for Nd2Ir3Sb4, with 56 parameters per refinement. The Sb1 atoms show enhanced displace-ment off the mirror planes at y = 1/4 and y = 3/4. A series of temperature dependent structure refinements of Pr2Ir3Sb4 down to 90 K are indicative of static disorder. The iridium and antimony atoms build up complex covalently bonded three-dimensional [Ir3Sb4] networks with Ir-Sb distances ranging from 256-269 pm (Nd2Ir3Sb4). The two crystallographically independent rare earth sites fill cavities of coordination numbers 17 (8 Ir + 9 Sb) and 15 (6 Ir + 9 Sb) within the [Ir3Sb4] polyanions. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a stable trivalent ground state for the ce-rium compound. No magnetic ordering was evident down to 3 K.

Abstract:Single phase (Sb1-xPbx)(2)(Mn1-ySby)O-4 (0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.608, 0.0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.372) samples with the Sb-2-MnO4-type structure were prepared at 650 C by solid-state reaction in evacuated sealed silica tubes. A replacement of Sb by Pb results in the oxidation of Sb3+ to Sb5+, which in turn replaces Mn2+ cations in octahedrally coordinated positions within the infinite rutile-type chains. The crystal structures of Pb-0.44-Sb1.64Mn0.92O4, Pb0.75Sb1.48Mn0.77O4, Pb1.07Sb1.26Mn0.67O4, and Pb1.186Sb1.175Mn0.639O4 were refined from X-ray powder diffraction data. Increasing the Pb content leads to a decrease of the a parameter from a = 8.719(2) Angstrom to a = 8.6131(8) Angstrom and to an increase of the c parameter from c = 5.999(2) Angstrom to c = 6.2485(7) Angstrom (for Sb2MnO4 and Pb1.216Sb1.155Mn0.628O4, respectively). This occurs due to increasing average cation size at the Pb/Sb position and decreasing cation size at the Mn/Sb position that leads to strong deformation of the (Mn/Sb)O-6 octahedra. Starting from the Pb(0.75)Sb(1.48)Mno(0.77)O(4) composition a modulated structure with q = yc* was observed by electron diffraction. Hig-resolution electron microscopy observations revealed that Mn and Sb ions order forming layers of octahedrally coordinated positions filled either by Mn2+ or by Sb5+ cations and alternating along the c axis. The dilution of the magnetic Mn-2divided by cations by nonmagnetic Sb5+ entities leads to a suppression of the antiferromagnetic intrachain interaction and disappearance of long-range magnetic order at high doping level. At T = 20 K the A(xy) spin component was found to be dominant in the AFM structure of the Pb(0.44)Sp(1.64)Mn(0.92)O(4) sample by neutron diffraction.
