Abstract:The stress-based criteria have long been adopted as the major guideline in the design of line pipes, but for those under the displacement control, such as pipelines in seismic regions, landslide areas and subsea environment, the stress-based criteria tend to be relatively conservative, instead the strain-based criteria will be more economic and reasonable to use in the pipe design. Hence, the strain-based design methods in different international standards were summarized and compared, as well as their applicable conditions. In view of the different formulas of the ultimate compressive strain of local buckling in the standards of Norway, Canada, etc., calculations of the ultimate compressive strain were conducted under different radius-thickness ratios and design pressures. It is revealed that the Canadian standard expression and Japanese SUZUKI formula are more conservative. To meet the demand of real engineering application, it was suggested that 0.3 t/D (t refers to the pipe wall thickness; D refers to the external diameter of pipes) be adopted as a conservative estimation of the ultimate compressive strain in the absence of design pressure, and that the Canada standard expression be employed while the design pressure can not be ignored. Because the strain-based design process has not been proposed in the Chinese pipeline codes, the work of this paper can serve as a reference for the research in the relevant areas in present China.
Theoretical Analysis and Numerical Simulation of Large-Diameter and Thin-Wall Pipelines During Ultra-Deep J-Lay Installation

Abstract:In this paper,a nonlinear differential equation of pipelines is established by considering the BRAZIER effect.Then,the analytical solution to the J-Lay pipeline configuration is obtained through the singular perturbation theory,and such key parameters as the bending moment and the axial force of the pipeline are solved by means of the iterative method.Meanwhile,the analytical solution of the pipeline is proved to be correct by means of the finite element method.Finally,the influences of the tension,the water depth and the ocean currents on the configuration and bending moment of the J-Lay pipeline are investigated.Theoretical results show that (1) in the laying process of the J-Lay pipeline,the peak of the bending moment is always present in the pipeline section near the touch down point;(2) when the tension is increased in a certain range,the more smooth the pipeline configuration is,the smaller the peak value of the bending moment will be,which is beneficial to the pipeline laying;(3) when the other parameters are constant and the water depth increases,the increase of the bending moment peak value of the pipeline is not monotonous;and (4) when the current force is in the opposite direction of the pipe laying,the bending moment peak value of the pipeline increases,which is detrimental to the pipeline laying.

Abstract:The pipe configuration and internal loads along the pipeline during the pipeline laying process have long been the focus of engineers. Most researchers simplify the seabed to be rigid and the water to be calm, ignoring the pipe embedment into the seabed and the influence of ocean currents. In this paper, a novel numerical approach is proposed for the laying of pipelines in the so-called J-lay method, taking into account the importance of both pipe embedment and ocean currents. The pipeline is divided into two parts, one part suspended in water, and the other laid on the seabed. The continuity of the two parts at the touch down point (TDP) is guaranteed to make a whole. The feasibility of the model is proved by the comparison between the present model and an analytical model, which shows good agreement in both pipeline configuration and bending moment distribution. Finally, parametric study was performed to consider the influence of current velocity, water depth, top inclination angle, and seabed stiffness, and conclusions are drawn.

Abstract:S-lay method is widely used in pipeline installation from shallow water to deep water for decades. However, previous researches on S-lay method are not so complete because they are based on some assumptions, such as calm water and rigid seabed, which make the results deviate from precision. In this paper, a novel numerical model for analyzing pipelines in the S-lay problem is proposed to investigate the overall configuration, internal forces and strain of the pipeline taking into account the influence of ocean currents and seabed stiffness. Such a model is of great advantage because it can properly consider many influential factors in the real situation, including the variation position of the liftoff point, the change of stinger radius, the influence of ocean currents, seabed stiffness and the strain of the pipeline. Moreover, the solution process of this model is easy and not time consuming, so it is suitable for engineering application.

Abstract:A method based on three-dimensional technology to aided design of new pipe inserting into underground water supply and drainage pipe has been researched on. Because of its distinct curvature and multiple distortions, the spatial model is very complex, so the general three-dimensional pipe design software can’ t be used in this pro-ject. The unreliability will be existed if the planar design is on the basis of the profile diagram. Therefore, the com-puter three-dimensional graphics technology can be a feasible solution to this problem. The maximum diameter of new pipe is obtained by using the three-dimensional object collision detection. Three-dimensional arc fitting based on spherical linear quaternion interpolation was adopted and three-dimensional modeling of complex pipe was real-ized. The adopted object collision detection algorithm based on triangle unit is simple and applicative. A modeling and collision demonstration software based on OpenSceneGraph three-dimensional engineer was developed to in-spect and verify a design project, the correctness of the method was confirmed by the result.

Abstract:In order to overcome the deficiencies of traditional design methods in general layout of pipeline engineering,the building information modeling (BIM) has been incorporated into general layout design.On the basis of the collaborative design of Civil 3D and Infraworks which are developed with BIM,data from all stages (e.g.planning,design,construction and operation) is imported into the 3D model,so that precise and complete data could be available for the operating staff when they use the model during the whole life cycle of the engineering project.This collaborative design method was applied to the general layout design of an oil depot.It is shown that the designers can get rid of trivial and superfluous design modification and concentrate morn attention on the design itself.Moreover,the design results are shown in three dimension.In this way,the design results can be displayed in WYSIWYG format.It provides a valuable reference for the innovation and development of general layout design in the oil and gas storage and transportation engineering in the future.

Abstract:The S-lay method has been widely used in pipeline installation from shallow water to deep water for decades. In this paper, a novel numerical model for analyzing pipelines in the S-lay problem is proposed to investigate the overall configuration, internal forces, and strain of the pipeline taking into account the influence of ocean currents and seabed stiffness. The influence of many important factors, including the variation position of the liftoff point, the change of stinger radius, ocean currents, seabed stiffness are investigated in detail. Some useful results are obtained: the stress state of the pipeline is found to vary greatly during the whole laying process; the train of the pipeline at both the upper and the lower sides is very important; ocean currents have negligible influence on the pipeline; traditional "touchdown factor" is not suitable to predict the real pipe embedment; and soil stiffness plays an important role in pipeline behavior on the seabed. The illustrative examples and comparison with a previous work demonstrate the widespread applicability of this model. Abstract:With the vigorous development of my country's economy, the process of large-scale urbanization has brought unprecedented demand for new construction. In the face of increasing complexity of project design, short design cycle and tight construction period, traditional computer-aided design methods have encountered multiple difficulties. This article uses literature search method and comparative analysis method to compare CAD technology and BIM technology, studies and analyzes the problems of traditional construction, and summarizes the advantages of BIM technology in traditional construction, and then analyzes the results based on the case. Shows that the use of BIM technology can save expenses and reduce construction period.

Abstract:The safety of offshore pipeline has drawn a great deal of attention during deepwater installation due to the combined actions of high external pressure, axial tension, and bending moment. Meanwhile, the pipeline configuration has a remarkable effect on the structural behaviour of the tube. The special studies focus on the deepwater S-lay technique in the present paper. The stiffened catenary theory is applied to establish the static equilibrium governing differential equation of a pipe element, and the solution equations of the total pipeline configuration from a lay-barge over a stinger to the seabed are derived. The numerical iteration method for solving pipeline configuration is described in detail, and the corresponding program is developed to conduct the analysis of effects of various parameters such as laying water depth, pipe diameter, thickness of concrete weighted coating layer, stinger length, control strain, and axial tension on pipeline configuration. The results show that the laying water depth, the submerged weight of the pipe, and the axial tension are the critical factors influencing pipeline configuration. In addition, geometrical parameters of the stinger such as length, radius, and shape have an important effect on the pipe-laying capacity of the vessel. The validity of the program is further verified by means of a comparison with results obtained from the commercial finite element software OFFPIPE.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization, the demand for water supply and drainage pipe networks has increased significantly. In the planning of urban construction, it is necessary to optimize the design of the water supply and drainage system pipe network to effectively save energy while providing residents with more accessible water resources. Therefore, the municipal water supply and drainage system and the water transmission methods should be designed according to the geographical conditions of the city. In this paper, we mainly analyze the design of municipal water supply and drainage systems and the selection of water transmission methods. Besides, the optimization of the water supply and drainage network zoning process and pipe network maintenance is also discussed, so as to provide a reference for municipal water supply and drainage work.

Abstract:The pipe–soil interaction at the touchdown zone (TDZ) during pipeline installation is of great importance as the pipe embedment has significant influence on various aspects of the performance of the pipeline. Most of the published works focus on the pipe–soil interaction at a pipe segment of unit length ignoring the lay effects, or simplify the seabed as a series of springs. Deepwater deposits are usually very soft, exhibiting low strength and plasticity. This paper aims to reveal the pipe–soil interaction mechanism on plastic seabed during J-lay through an analytical model. The seabed deforms plastically during loading with certain stiffness, but the stiffness during unloading is infinitely large so that the deformation of the seabed is irrecoverable. This model is established based on a system of 15 nonlinear equations and the continuity of displacement, inclination angle, bending moment and shear force along the pipeline is all guaranteed. On the basis of this model, the influences of static and dynamic laying effects on both soil resistance and pipe embedment are quantitatively studied through analytical analysis. In addition, a comparison with a model with a traditional elastic seabed is made, which reveals that the seabed model has great influence on both the inner load distribution and soil resistance along the pipeline.

Pipelines in the areas of ground movement from slope instability, seismic sideslip, loess collapse, mining subsidence, frost heave and thaw settlement in discontinuous permafrost can experience displacement-controlled plastic strain. The current paper describes the application of strain-based design of pipelines and introduces relevant codes, standards, and criteria of other countries. Some major issues in strain-based design such as geologic conditions, strain limits, mechanical performance, etc., are mentioned. The prospect of strain-based design of pipelines is discussed with reference to the geologic conditions and the state of the pipeline industry. Finally the requirements on parameters of line pipe materials, including yield stress, yield and tensile strength ratio, stress ratio, weld mismatch, anisotropy etc., and their influence on strain-based design are discussed.

Abstract:Highway, railway, waterway and pipeline are ways to transport oil. The pipeline has irreplaceable superiority, such as high throughput, low energy consumption and low cost. So the pipeline is the artery of energy source of national economy and very important to the development of social economy. When the pipeline is constructed, crossing some rivers is inevitable. If the crossing method and engineering management were unreasonable, the environment will be damaged, especially the pipeline may be destroyed seriously by the third party damage. Recently, the techniques of design, construction and management of pipeline river-crossing have made a great progress in the world. But pipeline river-crossing is still a technical problem, it needs hydrological research and analysis, geological prospecting and scheme selection. Qing-Tie crude oil pipeline locates in the Northeast of China and has been operated 35 years. It crosses 121 rivers. In these rivers, most sections of the pipeline are attacked by water directly because of the covering soil was washed away. Some sections are baring and hanging tens of meters. It is hidden trouble of security of operation. Especially the pipeline crosses Chai River in Liaoning province, it is laid by culvert of stone, once has an accident it can't be remedied. So remaking the crossing project scheme is essential. This paper has introduced the basic situation of Qing-Tie pipeline and Chai River. The stratum description, weather and hydrogeology, earthquake situation and the stability of bank are analyzed and evaluated. Heavy excavation, directional drilling, shield pushing and drilling blasting are compared by merits and drawbacks, construction period and engineering cost. Finally, the directional drilling is considered to be the best. The crossing horizon, embedded point, out point and laying parameters are worked out. The establishment and implementation of the project scheme is reference for the technique of pipeline river-crossing. © 2011 ASCE.

Abstract:J-lay is widely accepted as a favorable method for deepwater pipeline installation. The configuration and internal force of the pipeline during the laying process are key factors for its safety, and the embedment induced during pipeline installation plays an important role for pipeline stability in service. Traditionally, the seabed in the analysis of J-lay is assumed to be elastic, whereas deepwater deposits are usually very soft, exhibiting low strength and obvious plasticity. This paper presents an analytical model for pipelaying on plastic seabed. This model simplifies the pipeline as the combination of four segments: a natural catenary in water, a boundary-layer segment, a beam on the seabed (touchdown zone) where the soil deforms plastically, and a freely laid horizontal segment. The comparison with a traditional elastic-seabed model reveals that both models have similar pipeline configurations, although the elastic-seabed model slightly underestimates the maximum bending moment. In contrast, the pipeline embedment depths in the two models differ with deeper ultimate penetration predicted in the plastic-seabed model. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)WW.1943-5460.0000109. The goal is to fundamentally elevate the quality standards of these designs, ensuring they meet the criteria for engineering project excellence. Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to contribute to the improvement and sustainability of water supply and drainage systems, safeguarding the well-being of residents.
A Distance-Field-Based Pipe-Routing Method

Abstract:Pipes are commonly used to transport fuels, air, water, gas, hydraulic power, and other fluid-like materials in engine rooms, houses, factories, airplanes, and ships. Thus, pipe routing is essential in many industrial applications, including ship construction, machinery manufacturing, house building, laying out engine rooms, etc. To be functional, a pipe system should be economical while satisfying spatial constraints and safety regulations. Numerous routing algorithms have been published to optimize the pipe length and the number of elbows. However, relatively few methods have been designed to lay out pipes which strictly meet the spatial constraints and safety regulations. This article proposes a distance-field-based piping algorithm to remedy this problem. The proposed method converts the workspace into a 3D image and computes a distance field upon the workspace first. It then creates a feasible space out of the workspace by peeling the distance field and segmenting the 3D image. The resultant feasible space is collision-free and satisfies the spatial constraints and safety regulations. In the following step, a path-finding process, subjected to a cost function, is triggered to arrange the pipe inside the feasible space. Consequently, the cost of the pipe is optimized, and the pipe path rigidly meets the spatial constraints and safety regulations. The proposed method works effectively even if the workspace is narrow and complicated. In three experiments, the proposed method is employed to lay out pipes inside an underwater vehicle, a machinery room, and a two-story house, respectively. Not only do the resultant pipes possess minimal costs, but they also meet the spatial constraints and safety regulations, as predicted. In addition to developing the routing procedure, we also design a visualization subsystem to reveal the progression of the piping process and the variation of the workspace in the run time. Based on the displayed images, users can therefore evaluate the quality of the pipes on the fly and tune the piping parameters if necessary.
