Abstract:The paper presents an extensive review on the fundamentals of drying, represented by drying kinetics, and models of some building materials and their importance as highlighted in several studies presented by researchers in this area. The objective of the review is to present gaps and existing approaches that will serve as reference pool for researchers working in this area. This helps to determine the end point of drying process of various building material to avoid negative effects, such as shrinkage, cracks, and deformations. Different developmental approaches for each model and methods of simulation in building materials drying were presented with attention given to the application of variable drying conditions. The review revealed that empirical, such as phenomenological model, mechanistic and numerical models, such as diffusion model and Whitaker model, have been applied to predict the drying behavior of building materials with coefficients and boundary conditions being product specific. The major factors considered in these models were type of material, thickness and its physical characteristics, as well as the operating conditions mainly represented by the temperature and humidity of the drying air. The literature review shows that the available simulation tools were TRHumidade, Wufi Pro software and CFD developed to simulate drying process of building materials. It important to mention that in this study the focus was on the mass transfer and then the presented tools or software were the ones able to show and predict the distribution of the moisture inside the drying product.

Abstract:The modeling and numerical simulation of drying in porous media is discussed in this work by revisiting the different models of moisture migration during the drying process of porous media as well as their restrictions and applications. Among the models and theories, we consider those are ranging from simple ones like the diffusion theory to more complex ones like the receding front theory, the model of Philip and de Vries, Luikov’s theory, Krischer’s theory, and finally Whitaker’s model, in which all mass, heat transport, and phase change (evaporation) are taken into account. The review of drying models as such serves as the basis for the development of a framework for numerical simulation. In order to demonstrate this, the system of equations governing the drying process in porous media resulting from Whitaker’s model is presented and used in our numerical implementation. A numerical simulation of drying is presented and discussed to show the capability of the implementation.

Abstract:Drying is one of the widely used methods of grain, fruit, and vegetable preservation. The important aim of drying is to reduce the moisture content and thereby increase the lifetime of products by limiting enzymatic and oxidative degradation. In addition, by reducing the amount of water, drying reduces the crop losses, improves the quality of dried products, and facilitates its transportation, handling, and storage requirements. Drying is a process comprising simultaneous heat and mass transfer within the material, and between the surface of the material and the surrounding media. Many models have been used to describe the drying process for different agricultural products. These models are used to estimate drying time of several products under different drying conditions, and how to increase the drying process efficiency and also to generalize drying curves, for the design and operation of dryers. Several investigators have proposed numerous mathematical models for thin-layer drying of many agricultural products. This study gives a comprehensive review of more than 100 different semitheoretical and empirical thin-layer drying models used in agricultural products and evaluates the statistical criteria for the determination of appropriate model.

Abstract:The thick-layer drying kinetics of moisture-containing porous material (honeysuckle) at constant temperature and humidity are experimentally investigated, and the drying characteristics under variable temperature and humidity conditions are analyzed in this paper. The results show that the drying rate is constant and linearly/positively corrected with the moisture content under constant temperature and humidity conditions, and the corresponding slope (drying rate constant) decreases exponentially with the increase in the number of stacked layers because of the increased flow resistance and diminished convective migration of water vapor. The migration of saturated water vapor changes from convection-dominated to diffusion-dominated after the thickness of the stacked materials exceeds a critical value. Based on the experimental data, a new semi-theoretical drying model was proposed for thin-layer and thick-layer drying of moisture-containing stacked porous materials, and it was experimentally verified with a coefficient of determination greater than 0.92. The relative humidity of the drying medium is a key factor in determining the drying rate, and reducing the relative humidity of the drying medium at a constant temperature is suitable for drying heat-sensitive materials. This paper can contribute to the development of drying kinetics and provide a theoretical basis for the drying of moisture-containing porous material.

Abstract:The heat and mass transfer in an unsaturated wet cylindrical porous bed packed with quartz particles was investigated theoretically for relatively low convective drying rates. Local thermodynamic equilibrium was assumed in the mathematical model describing the multi-phase flow in the unsaturated porous media using the energy and mass conservation equations to describe the heat and mass transfer during the drying. The drying model included convection and capillary transport of the free water, diffusion of bound water, and convection and diffusion of the gas. The numerical results indicated that the drying process could be divided into three periods, the temperature rise period, the constant drying rate period and the decreasing drying rate period. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental data verifying that the mathematical model can evaluate the drying performance of porous media for low drying rates. The effects of drying conditions such as the ambient temperature, the relative humidity, and the velocity of the drying air, on the drying process were evaluated by numerical solution.

Abstract:The convective drying kinetics of porous medium was investigated numerically. A mathematical model for forced convective drying was established to estimate the evolution of moisture content and temperature inside multi-layered porous medium. The set of coupled partial differential equations with the specified boundary and initial conditions were solved numerically using a MATLAB code. An experimental set-up of convective drying had been constructed and validated the theoretical model. The temperature and moisture content of the potato samples were dynamic measured and recorded during the drying process. Results indicate that thermal diffusion coefficient has significant positive impact on temperature distribution and mass diffusion coefficient might directly affect on the moisture content distribution. Soret effect has a significant impact on heat flux and temperature distribution in the presence of large temperature gradient.

Abstract:Based on non-equilibrium thermodynamic theory and combined with the conservation laws, a comprehensive theoretical model was established to describe heat and mass transfer during convective drying process, and numerical calculation was performed. The results show that: (a) the external convective heat and mass transfer may be treated as the conductive heat transfer with internal heat source and the molecular mass diffusion with internal mass source, respectively, and the ability of heat and mass transfer mainly depends on the strength of the heat source and mass source; the higher the temperature of the drying media, the lower the strength of the internal heat source, but the higher that of the internal mass sources; (b) the evaporation of internal water takes place inside the whole material, and the molecular mass diffusion of the internal vapor is in the direction of decreasing mass transfer potential, not along the decreasing partial pressure of vapor.

Abstract:The drying kinetics of porous media are crucial for controlling the drying process, which is a vital component in many processes. A mathematical model of the drying process in a granular bed was developed using Whitaker's model, and its accuracy was verified through experimental results. The results indicated that the three stages of porous media drying are closely linked to the heat flow to the media and the latent heat of evaporation required by the liquid water inside it. Moreover, as the influence of gravity weakens and the capillary force strengthens, specifically due to the gradual decrease in the pore size of the bed, significant differences in the drying kinetics of the bed are observed, particularly in the third stage of drying, which is most affected. The onset of saturation in the third stage of bed drying varies with the pore size of the particles, with smaller pore sizes exhibiting an earlier onset. Additionally, the temperature change in this stage demonstrates the occurrence of secondary warming as the pore size decreases.

Abstract:In order to study the phase change phenomena of wet capillary porous media during drying, a model of heat and mass transfer with phase change was established. In the model, porous media were separated into two regions: the wet region and the dry region according to the irreducible saturation, and two regions were coupled by a dynamic evaporation front boundary. The finite difference method was used to solve the problem of the model for a one-dimensional drying process. Numerical results show that the appearance of the dry region is the critical point between constant drying rate period and fall drying rate period. At the beginning of drying, porous media surface is heated, pressure in porous media increases while temperature decreases. The temperature keeps constant during constant drying rate period while it increases when the dry region appears. The evaporation front interface moves slowly in the initial stage of dry region appearing, and then it advances quickly when it breaks through 10% thickness of porous media.

Abstract:This work studied the drying kinetics of the organic fractions of municipal solid waste (MSW) samples with different initial moisture contents and presented a new method for determination of drying kinetic parameters. A series of drying experiments at different temperatures were performed by using a thermogravimetric technique. Based on the modified Page drying model and the general pattern search method, a new drying kinetic method was developed using multiple isothermal drying curves simultaneously. The new method fitted the experimental data more accurately than the traditional method. Drying kinetic behaviors under extrapolated conditions were also predicted and validated. The new method indicated that the drying activation energies for the samples with initial moisture contents of 31.1 and 17.2 % on wet basis were 25.97 and 24.73 kJ mol −1 . These results are useful for drying process simulation and industrial dryer design. This new method can be also applied to determine the drying parameters of other materials with high reliability. Abstract:A two-dimensional mathematical model of simultaneous heat and mass transfer for porous media drying was derived based on the Whitaker's theory in the present study. The cylindrical coordinate system, which is more practical than the spherical one, was adopted. The model was solved numerically under the circumstance of fluidized-bed drying. The control-volume method with the fully implicit scheme was applied for discretization of governing equations. Physical properties of apple were selected in the simulation. Under typical operating conditions, heat and mass transfer mechanisms were analyzed based on the profiles of temperature and saturation inside the particles. Effects of the temperature, humidity and inlet velocity of hot gas were examined under different operating conditions. Simulation results show that the drying process can be significantly affected by coupled heat and mass transfer between gas and solid phases. The drying time increases with the increase in temperature and velocity of inlet hot gas, and decreases with the increase in humidity and bed area factor.

Abstract:The drying behavior of a moist object subjected to convective drying was analyzed numerically. A mathematical model for convective drying was developed to predict the transient moisture and temperature distribution inside porous materials. The coupled equations and boundary conditions were solved numerically using finite volume method. A new experimental system had been established to validate the theoretical model. Numerical results indicate that heat transfer coefficient would affect directly temperature distribution and mass transfer coefficient would directly influence on the drying rate. Abstract:The drying process plays an important role in various industries such as chemical engineering, food, agriculture, and construction. The drying process is a complex one due to the phenomena of heat and mass transfer, which take place simultaneously. In principle, these transport processes can be modelling using continuous and discrete approaches. Following the continuous approach, porous media was simulated as continuous, and effective parameters for heat and mass transfer were employed. In this continuous model, the effective diffusivity and effective thermal conductivity parameters had strong effects on the results. The purpose of this research was to develop an algorithm to determine the effective parameters of the drying of porous media by using a continuous model.

Abstract:The flow and distribution of liquid and vapor in the pore space of drying porous media are represented by a simple network model that incorporates the microscopic mechanisms. A method akin to Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics approaches is described for calculating from any such model the macroscopic, ‘volume- averaged’, or effective transport parameters: relative permeabilities for pressure-driven flow, effective diffusivities for molecular diffusion, and so on. The method is to map representative small samples of pore space onto regular networks that have equivalent mean coordination and are made up of biconical pore segments intersecting in pore bodies, all dimensions being drawn from measured or estimated distributions. Evaporation and meniscus curvature, vapor movement by diffusion away from menisci and viscous flow toward them are described by one-dimensional local approximations. The resulting large set of ordinary differential and algebraic equations is solved by computer. Solutions from several such realizations are averaged to determine relative permeability to liquid, capillary pressure, and effective diffusivity of vapor as functions of liquid saturation and drying history. The results are to be used for interpreting, interpolating, and extrapolating experimental measurements of the same quantities.
