Abstract:Thermal analysis (TA) is a technology that can be applied to evaluate the relationship between the physical properties of substances and temperature changes under programmed temperature control. It has been widely used in many fields and is particularly useful for determining the thermal stability and service life of polymers and other materials, the stability of drugs, and the danger of flammable and explosive materials. Simultaneously, the mechanism of dehydration, decomposition, and degradation of inorganic materials or dissociation of complexes can be studied and the decomposition rates of environmental pollutants can be estimated. Recently, TA kinetics has become the most extensively studied topic in TA research. The main purpose of kinetic analysis is to obtain the three kinetic triplets of a reaction process, namely, activation energy E-a, pre-exponential factors A, and mechanism function f(a). For a solid-state reaction, many mathematical models and corresponding data processing methods can be used for the study of TA kinetics. These methods can be classified as either isothermal or non-isothermal methods and further divided into integral and differential methods in the form of the kinetic equation. These equations can be divided into a single scanning rate and multiple scanning rate methods (isoconversion method) by the operation method. The isoconversion method can calculate activation energies without the mechanism function, and the complexity of the reaction can be determined by the change in activation energy as a function of conversion rate. Therefore, the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (ICTAC) recommends the isoconversion method for processing TA data. Because of the limitation of traditional isoconversion methods, novel isoconversion methods have been proposed over the past 10 years. The relationship among the existing dynamic analysis methods must be complementary, instead of competitive, because the reliability of the analysis results can be improved only through complementarity. Further efforts to popularize modern integral and differential methods with equal conversion rates are essential. Herein, the progress in isoconversion method development is briefly introduced. A novel kinetic equation and seven new isoconversion methods are reviewed, and the characteristics and limitations of these methods are discussed. In addition, the development trends and prospects of TA kinetics research methods are highlighted. We suggest that the Arrhenius formula should be modified on the basis of the relationship between the rate constant and temperature. The rate equation that is more suitable for non-isothermal and heterogeneous reactions should be used. The mechanism of multi-step solid-state reactions should be studied in depth, and unified standards must be adopted for the study of thermal decomposition kinetics. This represents imminent and important progress in the study of TA kinetics.

Abstract:The honeycomb paperboard drying process determines its forming quality.The research of honeycomb paperboard drying process and the drying part structure optimization is of important theoretical value and practical application value. Based on the theory of moisture migration in sold matters during drying,here we introduce the main theory of moisture transfer in solid material and establish the honeycomb paperboard drying part model.With the simulation analysis and simplifying calculation,we can get the temperature field distribution,moisture distribution,pressure distribution and the hot air flow direction in drying part.

Abstract:Abstract The paper presents a description of the modified temperature-moisture relationships, selected on the basis of the analysis of the kinetics of drying of liquid dispersed products on substrates and the methods of engineering calculation of the kinetics of drying with their application. Classification of the types of kinetic curves characterizing the change in the type of thermogram, such as a change in the angle of inclination, deformation and degeneration of the wet-bulb thermometer and boiling plateaux, allows obtaining a modified type of temperature-moisture relationships for their use in calculations of the drying kinetics. The choice of the type of temperature-moisture relationship is carried out on the basis of the solution developed by the authors of the forecast model of the kinetic curve type. The engineering method for calculating the kinetics of drying liquid dispersed products on substrates is based on solving the basic equation of drying kinetics, choosing the type of temperature-moisture relationship, calculating the coordinates of the reference points of temperature-moisture relationship, determined on the basis of the drying mode and the properties of the dried material.

Abstract:The research is based on an engineering project to develop an efficient and energy-saving sludge drying apparatus. A heat and mass transfer model was developed to understand the drying mechanism in a turbine thin-layer dryer. Numerical simulation was performed to investigate the changes in sludge content, temperature, and moisture content under different paddle angles. The results showed that the paddle angle of 45° provided the optimal effect of water evaporation and sludge conveying. Subsequently, a turbine thin-layer drying system was established and drying experiments were conducted to explore the influence of different operating parameters on the drying efficiency. The experimental drying results were compared with the simulation results, which showed that the developed model could predict the experimental results. The residence time experiment showed that the developed dryer was efficient in treating highly viscous sludge. The results of the orthogonal experiments showed that the heat source temperature and the rotating speed were the main influencing factors of the moisture content and energy consumption, respectively. A sensitivity analysis determined the optimal operating parameters for the experimental apparatus.

Abstract:The paper presents an extensive review on the fundamentals of drying, represented by drying kinetics, and models of some building materials and their importance as highlighted in several studies presented by researchers in this area. The objective of the review is to present gaps and existing approaches that will serve as reference pool for researchers working in this area. This helps to determine the end point of drying process of various building material to avoid negative effects, such as shrinkage, cracks, and deformations. Different developmental approaches for each model and methods of simulation in building materials drying were presented with attention given to the application of variable drying conditions. The review revealed that empirical, such as phenomenological model, mechanistic and numerical models, such as diffusion model and Whitaker model, have been applied to predict the drying behavior of building materials with coefficients and boundary conditions being product specific. The major factors considered in these models were type of material, thickness and its physical characteristics, as well as the operating conditions mainly represented by the temperature and humidity of the drying air. The literature review shows that the available simulation tools were TRHumidade, Wufi Pro software and CFD developed to simulate drying process of building materials. It important to mention that in this study the focus was on the mass transfer and then the presented tools or software were the ones able to show and predict the distribution of the moisture inside the drying product.

Abstract:In this paper,microwave drying equipments and the application of microwave drying technology in Chinese medicine were introduced.Advantages of microwave drying in the preparation of Chinese medicine extracts and products were also summarized.Advantages of microwave drying include fast drying,high energy utilization,uniform drying effect,effective sterilization,and easy automatic control.Meanwhile,three suggestions were proposed to solve the application problems,which include the study of drying processes mechanism,development of online testing technology and evaluation improvement of microwave drying methods.

Abstract:The effects of heat on moisture diffusion, inner evaporation and internal-heat generation were considered by numerically simultaneous models of heat and mass transfer for microwave drying on apple, assuming that the heat-transfer and mass-transfer coefficients are variable. Application was made to drying by finite difference calculus and predicted results agree with the experimental data.

Abstract:The kinetics of the heterogeneous, condensed-phase systems studied in thermal analytical techniques are often complex and usually affected by many experimental factors such as specimen geometry, thermal history, gaseous environment, etc. These complications impose many problems in experimental design, data analysis, and especially in interpretation of results. This paper concerns itself with practical applications of thermal analysis kinetics. Ways of overcoming, or at least ameliorating, some of the above problems are suggested, and caveats concerning overly simple and “canned” techniques of analysis of kinetics data are given. The limitations of one's reasonable expectations for the theoretical significance and empirical application of derived kinetics parameters are discussed.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><p>In recent years, many infrared (IR) and IR-assisted drying methods such as IR-hot air, IR-vacuum, IR-microwave, and vibration aided IR-dryer have been reported for drying of food materials due to its rapid drying behavior and less processing time due to high drying rate, consumes less energy, offers better control over temperature, superior quality products, less ecological footprint and also easily it can be combined with other modes of heating technologies. The combination of IR radiation with other drying methods is very promising as it not only improves the drying rate but also preserve the food quality. IR and IR-assisted drying have been proved as a potential drying method for many food products. Drying kinetics of food materials during IR drying is very critical for the design of IR dryer, selection of appropriate drying parameters, product quality maintenance, and control and optimization of the drying process. Therefore, this paper aims to report the optimum process parameters for IR and IR-assisted drying of food materials and its drying kinetics. Similarly, critically reviewed the effect of various factors on the IR drying process such as drying rate, specific energy consumption, effective moisture diffusivity, and activation energy during drying of various food materials.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Practical applications</h3><p>Infrared (IR) heating allows more uniform heating resulting in better quality characteristics of dried products than other drying methods. The combination of hot air and IR improves the effectiveness of drying. Drying kinetics of food materials and the factors affecting the drying characteristics of food materials during IR and IR-assisted heating are essential for the optimization of the drying process and the successful design of IR dryers with improved efficiency. Most of the IR and IR-assisted drying technologies developed for the food drying and dehydration process in the thermal food processing sector are still in a laboratory or experimental stage only. This review paper helps to analyze the further possibilities for scaling up of these technologies to industrial level or design of innovative dryer would be very beneficial to the food processing industries.</p></section>

Abstract:Freeze-drying is usually applied to dry bioproducts, pharmaceuticals, and high-valued foodstuffs. Due to high running cost and energy consumption of conventional freeze dryers, wider applications of freeze-drying technology are restricted. A freeze dryer based on a closed regeneration loop of hygroscopic solution is proposed here. Hygroscopic solutions such as LiCl-water solution are used as working fluid to absorb the vapor sublimated from the stuffs. The low vapor pressure of hygroscopic solution leads to a higher operating temperature of water vapor absorber compared with the operating temperature of traditional vapor condenser. Thermodynamic analyses are conducted to illustrate the advantages of this new freeze dryer. A case study performed with coffee shows a coefficient of performance improvement of 25.1% of the refrigeration system and a reduction of 14.6% of energy consumption, in which 8.0% cut of heat consumption is obtained because of the reuse of regeneration heat. Parametric analyses on the impacts of evaporation temperature and condensing temperature are also performed. It is demonstrated that the new freeze dryer has high potential of energy saving in wide operation ranges. The security issue of using hygroscopic solution in food freeze-drying has also been discussed. Considering other benefits altogether, it is believed that such a freeze dryer is promising in practical freeze-drying of foodstuffs.

Abstract:The convective drying kinetics of porous medium was investigated numerically. A mathematical model for forced convective drying was established to estimate the evolution of moisture content and temperature inside multi-layered porous medium. The set of coupled partial differential equations with the specified boundary and initial conditions were solved numerically using a MATLAB code. An experimental set-up of convective drying had been constructed and validated the theoretical model. The temperature and moisture content of the potato samples were dynamic measured and recorded during the drying process. Results indicate that thermal diffusion coefficient has significant positive impact on temperature distribution and mass diffusion coefficient might directly affect on the moisture content distribution. Soret effect has a significant impact on heat flux and temperature distribution in the presence of large temperature gradient.

Abstract:In view of the escalating cost of energy, potential legislation curtailing carbon emissions and the need to dry diverse new products, it is expected that drying R&D will continue to thrive in the coming decades, even after a continuous upswing over the past three decades. It is becoming increasingly important that new green dryers with smaller carbon footprints will be demanded, not simply preferred, over the next decade of unprecedented industrial expansion of the developing economies of the world. To develop new drying technologies one needs to seek a cost-effective and speedier way of arriving at new designs. This article proposes that mathematical modeling is one such approach to intensify drying technology innovation. In spite of the limitations of exiting drying theories it is proposed that one can consider innovative conceptual designs of dryers through the modeling approach. However, modeling cannot supplant experimental verification in view of our lack of detailed knowledge of the fundamental drying principles. Some examples of model-based innovation are given along with brief tabulated summaries of various modeling approaches and a list of recent literature reports on modeling dryers that have appeared in Drying Technology.

Abstract:The research progress of sludge drying equipment,common drying process types and their working principle at home and abroad were introduced.The advantages,disadvantages and technical difficulties of different drying processes and equipment were analyzed.The key technical mains during the type selection and development of sludge drying equipment were summarized.It was put forward that energy consumption and system security were the key factors for drying equipment selection and design.For the energy consumption,the heat source and drying process should be considered,and the heat loss should be decreased using the relevant technical means to improve the drying efficiency;for the control of the security,consideration should be given to reducing dust concentration and oxygen content.

Abstract:Drying has been widely studied as a necessary process in biomass utilization. The steam diffusion law plays an important role in drying kinetics. The drying kinetics of a single biomass particle using Fick’s second law of diffusion was studied in this paper. A parabolic relationship appeared between the critical moisture content and temperature. The critical moisture content decreased with the increase in drying temperature and the initial moisture content. The drying temperature had a significant effect on the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the dramatically falling period of the biomass drying process. However, it was affected by the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the slowly falling period. The initial moisture caused the opposite effect during the different periods. The normalized biomass moisture content generally increased with the increase in drying temperature, and decreased with the increase in initial moisture content. The initial moisture content had an effect on the normalized biomass moisture during the slowly rising period. Meanwhile, the drying temperature had an effect on the normalized biomass moisture during the whole period. The critical moisture content and the normalized biomass moisture content had negative relevant relationship. This study provides some valuable conclusions regarding the biomass drying process.

Abstract:The review summarizes the current state, outlook and development of the field of thermal analysis, emphasizing the study of thermal effects as the basis of all other methodologies. Heat and its understanding intertwines throughout the entire civilization from the Greek philosophers through the middle ages to today's advanced technological era. The foundations of the field of thermal analysis, where heat acts as its own agent, date back to the nineteenth century, and the calorimetric evaluation of heat fluxes became the basis. It views the processes of calibration and rectification specifies the iso- and noniso- degrees of transformation, explains the role of the equilibrium background, which is especially necessary in kinetics. It introduces a new concept of thermodynamics with regard to the constancy of first derivatives and discusses the role of standard temperature and its non-equilibrium variant—tempericity. It describes the constrained states of glasses and assesses the role of dimensions in material science. Finally yet importantly, it deals with the influence of thermoanalytical journals, their role in presenting unusual results, and discusses the role of the dissident science. It also describes the level and influence of adequate books and finally describes discussions and perspectives, i.e. where to look better interpretation for and what is the influence of current over-sophisticated devices.

Abstract:<p>Thermodynamics is a science concerning the state of a system, whether it is stable, metastable or unstable, when interacting with the surroundings. In this overview, fundamentals of thermodynamics are briefly reviewed through the integration of first and second laws of thermodynamics for open and nonequilibrium systems to demonstrate that the reversible equilibrium and irreversible nonequilibrium thermodynamics can be integrated to enhance the power and utilities of thermodynamics. The recent progresses in computational thermodynamics, the remaining challenges, and potential impacts in broad scientific fields are discussed. It is shown that computational thermodynamics enables the modeling of thermodynamics of a state as a function of both external and internal variables and enables quantitative calculations of a broad range of properties of a multicomponent system in terms of first and second derivatives of energy, including not only equilibrium states when there are no driving forces for any internal processes and but also non-equilibrium states with driving forces for internal processes. Consequently, external constraints such as fixed strain and internal degree of freedoms such as ordering and defects can be described in a coherent framework and applied to materials design. Furthermore, two important but largely overlooked aspects in thermodynamics will be discussed, i.e. the rigorous application of statistical thermodynamics with the probability of configurations and their contributions to system properties, and the applications of second derivatives of energy with respect to either two extensive variables or two potentials or a mixture of them in terms of understanding and predicting emergent behaviors, critical phenomena, kinetic coefficients, and mechanical properties.</p>
