Abstract:The imidization of poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) with aniline by reactive extrusion is investigated in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. During this reactive extrusion, the process temperature is much higher than the boiling point of the aniline. Accordingly, most of the aniline should be vaporized immediately after being fed into the extruder, occupies the unfilled part of the extruder, and is transferred to the melt phase where it is consumed through the reaction. Based on the mechanism of this vapor-melt heterogeneous process and experimental data for residence time distribution (RTD) in the extruder, a continuous process model is developed. The effects of operating conditions including temperature, throughput, and screw rotation speed on the reaction kinetics are discussed by both experimental data and model simulation. The results indicate that the residence time and the mass transport of aniline from vapor to melt phase should play significant roles in this heterogeneous reactive extrusion process.

Abstract:We present a design strategy of in-line mixers for 3D printing and an evaluation protocol that comprehensively characterizes the performance of hydrodynamics, reagent mixing, heat exchange, and reaction behavior. For demonstration, we engineer a split-and-recombination (SAR)-type mixer with stationary oblique baffles which effectively blends two streams in the laminar flow regime, particularly at low and intermediate Reynolds number. The 3D printing technique that opens up new design freedom and enables rapid model evaluation and optimization is low-cost and easy to implement in the laboratory. Simulations of hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer including reactions form a solid foundation of mixer evaluation. Experimental results of the Villermaux-Dushman reaction and pressure measurement validate the numerical model and illustrate the difference between the designed SAR mixer and a conventional T-mixer. In addition, superior mixing performance of the SAR mixer is confirmed by the mixing intensity simulations, as compared with T-/helical mixers. The presented model yields new insights into the scalability and applicability of the 3D-printed integrated reactor.
A Method for Assessing Micromixing in TSE and Its Application

Abstract:Micromixing quality is one of the most important parameters in twin-screw extruder (TSE) operation. A new parallel competitive reaction system of macromolecules composed by the reaction between PSt-co-TMI (copolymer of styrene and α,α-dimethyl meta-isopropenyl benzyl isocyanate) and MAMA (9-(methylamino-methyl) anthracene) as the fast reaction and the reaction between PSt-co-TMI and e-caprolactam as the slow reaction was designed and used to assess the micromixing quality of high-viscous system formed by macromolecular reaction in the TSE. The segregation index and conversion ratio of the competitive reactions in different positions of the TSE were examined. Furthermore, the influences of feed rate and screw speed were studied. It indicates that the proposed macromolecular competitive system can be used to well assess the micromixing quality of the high-viscous materials in TSE; the micromixing is accomplished very quickly after polymer melting, and then the micromixing quality keeps unchanging. As to the impellent type elements of the TSE, under the same feed rate, the micromixing quality decreases with the increase of the screw rotation speed. It was found that the filling degree of the TSE is an important parameter which controls the micromixing quality of the TSE operation. Under some special conditions, with the increase of feed rate the micromixing performance of the TSE is improved instead, which is due to the rise of filling degree of the TSE.

Abstract:The process of water-assisted injection molding(WAIM) was analyzed.In the work cycle,every step in WAIM was discussed.Water hydraulic proportional system for WAIM was designed and the work states were investigated based on the design.The timing parameters were also calculated.By considering the interaction and coordination between the water hydraulic system and the injection molding machine,the method of timing control for WAIM system was provided including settings of directional valve switching and control flows were considered.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of various inner cylinder configurations on micromixing and fluid dynamics within a Taylor-Couette (TC) reactor using the inner cylinders with different surface designs, including the traditional smooth-surfaced rotor cylinder. The four innovative inner cylinders were specifically designed with axial corrugations (N40 and N80) and three-dimensional rough surfaces (NZ40 and NZ80). Micromixing efficiency was assessed experimentally using the iodide-iodate reaction as a probe. To further understand the impact of the rotors' surface structures on micromixing, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling was utilized to analyse the fluid dynamics within the TC reactor. An incorporation model was employed to calculate the micromixing time. The experimental findings reveal that the segregation index decreases with increasing rotation speed for all inner cylinders. Besides, NZ80 ' s micro-mixing efficiency surpasses that of its counterparts, NZ40, N40, and N80. The CFD modelling results underscore the significant influence of the inner cylinder's surface configuration on the turbulence dissipation rate and volume probability distribution, which are likely to contribute positively to the micromixing efficiency within the TC reactor. Furthermore, the empirical correlations obtained have been established to understand the micro-mixing time within TC reactors using different rotating cylinders.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel control system is introduced for a micro process system for the manufacturing of nanoparticles. An impinging-jet micromixer is used as the microreactor for mixing two fluid phases. In order to increase the scalability of the manufacturing system, a high speed image acquisition and processing subsystem is utilized to provide real-time visual feedback. Jet slope and shape are calculated automatically to evaluate the outcome of the mixing. A control algorithm consisting of a feed forward and feedback components is then implemented to control the pump's flowrate to deliver guaranteed performance even with the presence of external disturbance and system uncertainty. Experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed solution.
Analysis of Mixing Efficiency in Continuous Polymer Processing Equipment

Abstract:[Continuous mixing equipment is widely used in polymer processing. Typical continuous mixers include single screw and twin screw extruders. The flow field in these mixing devices is difficult to analyze due to the complex geometry. In this work, a fluid dynamics analysis package-FIDAP, using the finite element method, was implemented to simulate the three dimensional, isothermal flow patterns in the region of conveying elements and shearing discs of a Leistritz intermeshing counterrotating twin screw extruder model LSM30.34, a 2{dollar}{bsol}sp{lcub}{bsol}prime{bsol}prime{rcub}{dollar} Welding Engineers tangential counterrotating twin screw extruder and the MCT section of a Multi-Cut Transfermix extrusion system. The rheology of the fluid was described by a power-law model. The problem of time dependent flow boundaries was solved by selecting a number of sequential geometries to represent a complete mixing cycle. The dispersive mixing in the region of conveying elements and shearing discs of the intermeshing counterrotating twin screw extruder was characterized in terms of shear stresses generated in the flow field and a parameter {dollar}{bsol}beta{dollar} quantifying the elongational flow components. The influence of screw rotational speed and axial pressure difference on these flow characteristics was analyzed. Comparisons of the flow characteristics in the regio n of conveying elements and in the shearing discs, and between corotating and counterrotating modes in the shearing discs were also presented. A framework was developed to evaluate distributive mixing efficiency in the intermeshing and tangential counterrotating twin screw extruders and in the Multi-Cut Transfermix. The dynamics of distributive mixing was studied numerically by means of tracking the evolution of particles originally gathered as clusters. The extent or goodness of mixing was characterized in terms of length stretch, pairwise correlation function and volume fraction of islands. The length stretch reflects the capability of the mixer to spread particles away from their neighbors initially present in the same cluster. The pairwise correlation function characterizes the global distribution of particles in the mixing region. The volume fraction of islands quantifies the regions void of minor component and provides a more local mixing analysis. This framework can then be used to differentiate among various operating conditions or various designs of the same type of equipment. Abstract:The double-screw conical mixer, as a mixing device, has been widely used in lots of industries for its high mixing rate and quality. However, a deeper understanding as well as a large-scale simulation on particle mixing in this kind of mixer is still lacking. In this paper, discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to investigate the flow pattern of particles and the mixing performance of the double-screw conical mixer with particle number from 0.5 to 1.1 million. The effects of the rotation speed and the sweeping speed on mixing rate and quality are studied. The particle size ratio is also investigated to reveal the mixing performance of this mixer. The simulation results indicate that particles are well mixed in the overall and local mixing domain as well as in the binary system with a large particle diameter ratio of 1:3. When the rotation ratio is at a specific value, the mixer will have a better mixing performance. Considering both the mixing performance and the power consumption, the optimal condition for operation can be obtained. It also can be found that particle breakage is less likely to occur here. Compared with other parts of the mixer, the wear rate on the screw edge is larger.

Abstract:Agitation is an unit progress commonly used in process industry.In this article,the development of mixing equipment design was summarized.The current design methods for mixing equipment can be classified as the design based on classical design manual, research design with the combination of expertise and experiment and the design based on CFD,all of which were described and analyzed herein.It was indicated that the optimum design of mixing equipment need to emphasize the effective coupling of characteristics in process and equipment,and it was also pointed that the intellectual design based on computer network is the trend of mixing equipment design.
Melt-Mixing by Novel Pitched-Tip Kneading Disks in a Co-Rotating Twin-Screw Extruder

Abstract:Melt-mixing in twin-screw extruders is a key process in the development of polymer composites. Quantifying the mixing performance of kneading elements based on their internal physical processes is a challenging problem. We discuss melt-mixing by novel kneading elements called "pitched-tip kneading disk (ptKD)". The disk-stagger angle and tip angle are the main geometric parameters of the ptKDs. We investigated four typical arrangements of the ptKDs, which are forward and backward disk-staggers combined with forward and backward tips. Numerical simulations under a certain feed rate and screw revolution speed were performed, and the mixing process was investigated using Lagrangian statistics. It was found that the four types had different mixing characteristics, and their mixing processes were explained by the coupling effect of drag flow with the disk staggering and pitched-tip and pressure flows, which are controlled by operational conditions. The use of a pitched-tip effectively to controls the balance of the pressurization and mixing ability.

Experimental Approaches for Understanding Mixing Performance of A Minireactor

Abstract:Three experimental approaches are presented to determine the mixing characteristics of a new kind of high-efficiency membrane dispersion minireactor in which microfiltration membranes are applied as the dispersion media. Residence time distribution (RTD) curves were measured for determining the macromixing characteristics. A typical Dushman reaction (iodide-iodate) coupled with a neutralization and precipitation reaction of BaSO4 were introduced to characterize the micromixing performance of a single-phase mixing process. A dye extraction method was also applied to study the micromixing performance of a two-liquid phase-mixing system. The RTD result showed that the flow performance in the minireactor was almost in the plug flow condition. The micromixing performance was expressed with a segregation index, which could be < 0.002. The single-phase micromixing performance reached the desired level. The result of precipitation of BaSO4 showed that the mixing performance had a substantial influence on the particle size and size distribution. It was found that in the single-phase mixing process the mixing performance was mainly influenced by the phase flux and the membrane pore size. With decreasing dispersed fluid flux or the membrane pore size, or with increasing continuous fluid flux, the micromixing performance was enhanced. The dye extraction method can correctly determine the mixing performance of a two-liquid phase-mixing system. Unlike the single-phase mixing process, in the two-liquid phase-mixing process there was a minimum value for the mixing efficiency with the change of the continuous or dispersed-phase flux, when the membrane pore size was > 0.9 mu m. Abstract:Due to the problems of the traditional mixed injection molding production, such as unsatisfactory of the injection molding machine cylinder temperature control, the dispersed devices, the low automation degree and the lack of supervision for the whole production process, the production line of the mixed injection molding machine has been modified. The fuzzy self-adaptive PID control method is used to improve the temperature control accuracy and stability. Two sets of equipments of the injection molding machine have been communicated via the bus technology to realize automation production. And the computer monitoring system has been designed by VB technology to monitor the operating status and parameters of the entire production process. This transformation design can achieve to shorten production cycle, reduce labor costs and covering area, and also improve the production automation level and efficiency.

Abstract:To control the multicomponent reactions in extrusion, reactive-mixing flow in a co-rotating twin screw extruder was numerically studied in the present paper. Effects of initial species distribution, rotating speed and flow rate on a competitive-parallel reaction were investigated and the relationship between mixing and reactions was discussed from the view of chemical reaction engineering. The simulation results show the studied operational parameters, which determine residence time distribution, earliness of mixing and segregation degree of reactive-mixing flows, affect the local species concentration and reaction time and hence have significant influences on the reaction extent. Orthogonal test was adopted to clarify the significance of operational parameters. The analysis shows that initial species distribution and flow rate are the most important factors in the control of reaction extent, and effect of rotating speed is conditional depending on the micro-mixing status of the fluid.

Abstract:The circulatory mixing in a miniature conical twin screw extruder(MCTSE)under the condition of batch filling was evaluated numerically using finite element modeling. The simulation was implemented with mesh superposition technique to generate velocity profiles and particle trajectories for the extrusion process of polymer melt. Based on the statistical analysis of tracking particles,the dispersive mixing was evaluated using shear stress and mixing index,and the distributive mixing was assessed using the length of stretch and the scale of separation. The mixing performance in different screw pitch and rotating speed were also examined. The results showed that the mixing of MCTSE was dependent on stretching flow cooperation with shear flow. Both the dispersive mixing and distributive mixing were improved by either increasing the rotating speed of screw or decreasing the screw pitch, yet an opposite tendency was displaying for the mixing efficiency. The preference was given to the proper process rather than the screw structure of MCTSE on the basis of the composite analysis of different mixing parameters.

Abstract:A novel fluidic mixer, which takes advantage of impingement mixing and is designed according to the constructal approach, is evaluated by the Villermaux/Dushman method. The effects of different configurations (including the structure of the fluid collector and the diameter of the nozzles on the fluid injector) on the mixing performance (i.e. the segregation index and the energy dissipation rate) are determined. The segregation index is smaller, or in other words the degree of mixing is better, when a branch type fluid collector or smaller nozzles are used, however, at the cost of higher energy dissipation rate. When the flow rate is sufficiently high, mixing caused by the impingement of streams is almost complete, rendering the mixing in the branched channels unnecessary. As a result, if very high degree of mixing is pursued, the collector with a simple empty space should be used in the mixer to reduce energy consumption.

Abstract:The kneading elements play a crucial role in the distributive and dispersive mixing in the conventional co-rotating twin screw extruders. A novel kind of asymmetrical dual-speed co-rotating non-twin kneading elements (NTKE) with a zero staggered angle was designed to introduce symmetry break to improve mixing. Finite element method was applied to solve the time-dependent flow field where mesh superposition technique was used to impose the boundary conditions of moving parts and further to avoid the remeshing at every time steps. The flow and mixing of several fluids obeying the Carreau constitutive model with the different power law exponents were investigated numerically and compared with the conventional co-rotating twin kneading elements (TKE). Distributive mixing was evaluated through evolution of tracer droplets and decaying of variance index with time. Moreover, the dispersive mixing was examined in terms of the statistical distributions of mixing index. An integral function with regard to the mixing index was proposed to evaluate the proportion of tracer particles subjected to the elongation.

Abstract:Abstract Aiming at the special production process of an environmental protection building material, a new mixing equipment, high-speed centrifugal mixer, was designed. In this paper, the mixing characteristics of high-speed centrifugal mixer were studied by using discrete element method (DEM). By constructing the contact model and establishing the evaluation system, the mixing process was simulated and analyzed by EDEM software, and the mixing situation of the two raw materials in the centrifugal mixer was obtained. At the same time, according to the two important factors affecting the mixing results, the comparative experimental analysis was carried out under different conditions, and finally the optimization suggestions for the equipment were put forward.
