Abstract:Abrasive machining is a widely-employed finishing process for different materials such as metals,ceramics,glass,rocks etc.to achieve close tolerances and good dimensional accuracy and surface integrity.High speed and super-high speed abrasive machining technologies are the newest-developed advanced machining processes to satisfy super-hardness and difficult-to-machining materials machined.In the present paper,high efficiency abrasive machining technologies relating to ultra high speed grinding,high speed point-grinding,high efficiency deep grinding are analyzed.The efficiency and parameters range of these abrasive machining processes are compared.The key technologies and the newest development and current states of high speed and super-high speed abrasive machining are investigated.It is concluded that high speed and super-high speed abrasive machining are a promising technology in the future abrasive machining.

Abstract:In this paper, the concept of the unsteady-state grinding technique is proposed and compared with the conventional grinding technique. Experimental work was performed to establish the existence of the unsteady state in the process of ultra-precision grinding with a common abrasive wheel. From the results of the observation of the wheel topography, the whole grinding process in the unsteady state was separated into three stages, namely cutting by grains peaks, micro-cutting by micro-edges of the broken grains, and rubbing without material removal. By utilizing the common abrasive wheel newly redressed to damage the finished surface of silicon nitride and comparing the finished surface with the damaged surface in aspects of their scanning electronic microscope (SEM) pattern and surface roughness, the existence of cutting and micro-cutting actions in the unsteady-state grinding process was confirmed.

Abstract:Ultra-precision grinding for advanced ceramics has been achieved by the unsteady-state grinding technique. This paper deals mainly with observing and analyzing the surface quality of silicon nitride ground by a pink fused alumina wheel with different grinding parameters. To optimize the grinding parameters in the process of unsteady-state grinding, experiments of X-ray diffraction, energy spectrum analysis, SEM observation and roughness measurement were performed. The results show that there do exist optimum grinding conditions such as grain size, coolant, and cutting depth, etc. Finally, the surface roughness Ra can be as good as 0.01μm under optimum conditions.

Abstract:This paper reports a systematic investigation of high speed grinding of hard-to-machining of titanium alloys. The ground surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, and the effects of different grinding parameters on roughness were discussed. A numerical model was established to predict surface roughness based on the evolutionary neural network optimized by Genetic Algorithm (GA). The modeled results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:This paper study on the influence of ultrasonic vibration assisted grinding (UAG) process on surface topography and properties of C/SiC composites. Through the surface quality experiments of common grinding (CG) and UAG, the height distribution parameters and function parameters are obtained and used to analyze the characteristics of the material surface topography. The relationship between grinding process and the composites surface quality is pointed out by experimental research. The orthogonal design is employed to optimize ultrasonic parameters and grinding parameters. The optimized condition is carried out to modify the surface quality. The results show that ultrasonic vibration has a great influence on height and surface bearing properties; the surface roughness is improved by the small vibration amplitude and low frequency. The grinding depth is the key factor on surface topography modification and the feed rate is the second. According to the research, an important technical support is carried out to improve the surface performance of C/SiC composites.

Abstract:In this paper, a new method of improving uniformity of surface roughness through controlling feed rate was proposed. A CNC grinding software based on feed rate controlling and error compensation for aspheric surface was developed. The structure and function of the software system was described. An experimental test for grinding aspheric surface of WC mould was conducted for evaluating the performance of the compensation process by using this developed software. After compensation grinding for several times, form accuracy of PV 126 nm, roughness of Ra 3.4 nm can be obtained.

The paper presents the abrasive grain motion equations, removal rate model,grinding force model and grinding force ratio model.According to the grinding force model, the grinding force will decrease as the spindle speed, vibration amplitude and vibration frequency increase. The grinding force increase as the grinding depth and feed rate increase.

The conception, applications and history of ultra-precision machining are introduced in this article, and the developments of ultra-precision machining technologies, especially ultra-precision grinding, ultra-precision cutting and polishing are also reviewed. The current state and problems of this field in China are analyzed. Finally, the development trends of this field and the coping strategies employed in China to keep up with the trends are discussed.

Abstract:High-speed grinding (HSG) is an advanced technology for precision machining of difficult-to-cut materials in aerospace and other fields, which could solve surface burns, defects and improve surface integrity by increasing the linear speed of the grinding wheel. The advantages of HSG have been preliminarily confirmed and the equipment has been built for experimental research, which can achieve a high grinding speed of more than 300 m/s. However, it is not yet widely used in manufacturing due to the insufficient understanding on material removal mechanism and characteristics of HSG machine tool. To fill this gap, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of HSG technologies. A new direction for adding auxiliary process in HSG is proposed. Firstly, the combined influence law of strain hardening, strain rate intensification, and thermal softening effects on material removal mechanism was revealed, and models of material removal strain rate, grinding force and grinding temperature were summarized. Secondly, the constitutive models under high strain rate boundaries were summarized by considering various properties of material and grinding parameters. Thirdly, the change law of material removal mechanism of HSG was revealed when the thermodynamic boundary conditions changed, by introducing lubrication conditions such as minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), nano-lubricant minimum quantity lubrication (NMQL) and cryogenic air (CA). Finally, the mechanical and dynamic characteristics of the key components of HSG machine tool were summarized, including main body, grinding wheel, spindle and dynamic balance system. Based on the content summarized in this paper, the prospect of HSG is put forward. This study establishes a solid foundation for future developments in the field and points to promising directions for further exploration.

Abstract:The high-speed and high-precision motorized spindle is the future development trend of the CNC machine tool field, and has become the focus of research in the world. High-speed motorized spindles tend to develop in the direction of high precision, high speed, low energy consumption, high efficiency, and high reliability. We undertake a through, systematic review of the development history perspective of the research on precision bearing technology, dynamic balancing technology, thermal error measurement and compensation technology with regard to the key technologies of high-speed motorized spindles. On this basis, the current level of development of key technologies for high-speed motorized spindles is analyzed, and the objective advantages and disadvantages of existing technologies are summarized. Finally, the development tendency of high-speed motorized spindle technology is predicted and foreseen.

Abstract:The time-dependent performance of grinding is expressed as the change of process output measures as a function of time during grinding. Although the wheel capability will be restored by dressing, the time-dependent performance of grinding during one dressing skip is the determinant on the grinding quality variation in terms of surface integrity and workpiece geometric accuracy. Therefore, understanding of grinding time-dependent performance in relation with the wheel-workpiece microscopic interaction is critical for wheel and process development to achieve stable grinding processes. In this article, the grinding of superalloy with cubic boron nitride (cBN) grinding wheels is performed. The time-dependent performance is recorded to represent the characteristic features, and the microscopic wheel topography is measured under scanning electron microscope (SEM) throughout the grinding process, so as to reveal the root cause for the time-dependent performance and its impact on the workpiece quality variation. The experiment results indicate that during the grinding process, there exist three characteristic stages, namely, initial wheel wear stage, severe wheel wear stage, and wheel resharpening stage. Moreover, the change trend of spindle power consumption, workpiece quality on surface hardness and roughness, wheel wear condition, and G ratio are consistent with the wheel topography evolution reflected by SEM photos, which can be used to present the three grinding stages. The wear and replacement of the efficient grain cutting edges result in the time-dependent performance during superalloy high-speed grinding with cBN wheels.

Abstract:Super high-strength steel has an important demand in manufacturing key components inside gear transmission systems of heavy-duty helicopter owing to its superior comprehensive mechanical property. However, the high-performance machining of super high-strength steel is confronted with great challenges owing to the high cutting force, serious tool wear, and impoverished machining quality. Comparative trials in grinding ultra-high strength steel under conventional grinding (CG) and ultrasonic vibration-assisted grinding (UVAG) processes were conducted with white alumina (WA) and microcrystalline alumina (MA) wheels. Grinding performances, including grinding forces, force ratio, ground surface quality, and abrasive wheel morphologies, were discussed in detail. Experimental results show that the separation property between wheels and workpiece in UVAG process contributes to alter the material removal process, reducing the chip clogging and adhesion. In addition, the micro-fracture of abrasive grains can effectively improve the self-sharpening ability of abrasive wheels. UVAG possesses a shorter grinding scratch owing to the ultrasonic vibration than that of CG, which is beneficial to improve machining quality under the same wheel. Meanwhile, in comparison of WA wheels, MA wheels have the narrower grinding marks and better surface quality, which is due to the sharp edges produced by its higher strength, toughness, and excellent self-sharpening.

Abstract:Ultrasonic vibration-assisted grinding (UVAG) technology, by superposing high-frequency and micro-amplitude ultrasonic vibration on the conventional grinding operation, has significant advantages and broad application prospects in the high-efficiency and high-quality manufacturing area of aviation and aerospace, advanced machine tools, high-speed railway, energy and power technologies owing to the low grinding force and temperature, high materials removal rate and improved ground surface quality.At present, lots of research work on UVAG technology and equipment has been carried out, and the relevant results have been applied in the machining of various difficult-to-machine materials and key parts.Based on the overview of the basic operating principle, working advantages and main classifications of UVAG technology, this paper systematically reviews the achievements of UVAG equipment, material removal mechanism and surface topography generation mechanism in the past decades.Finally, the future development trend and important research issues of UVAG technology are provided.

Abstract:Currently, the lack of proper manufacturing technology that takes productivity and quality into account is still considered as the bottleneck for large-scale applications of glass-ceramic. This work proposed a multi-step high-speed grinding technology for Zerodur glass-ceramics machining. Not only the experimental investigation of the effects of feed speed and grinding depth on the machining behaviors of glass-ceramics were performed, but also the theoretical analysis of machining behaviors was conducted. The effects of grinding parameter on machining behaviors were compared as well and the results showed that the effects of feed speed were greater. Based on these experimental results and the theory of brittle-to-ductile transition, a strategy for optimizing suitable grinding parameters was proposed and the optimal process combination parameters were obtained. A comparison of various existing grinding processes and the multi-step high-speed grinding technology was given in the end and verified the unique advantages and application prospects of the technology.

Abstract:Gears are important mechanical parts for transmitting power and play an increasingly important role in the machinery industry. The electric vehicle industry developed rapidly and became a vital development field of the automotive industry over the past few years. The conversion of energy increases the requirements for electric vehicle transmissions, which promotes the development of high-speed and low-noise transmission gear. This paper elaborates on the research progress of high-speed and low-noise gear finishing methods. Firstly, this review analyses the machining requirements, finishing, and specific machining technologies of high-speed and low-noise gears. The importance of gear grinding and honing in high-speed and low-noise gear machining is highlighted. Secondly, the applications of gear grinding and honing in gear modification, error compensation, and texture control are analyzed. Furthermore, the role of precision machining technology in improving gear performance is clarified. Finally, the design and processing methods of the modified tooth flank for gear modification are summarized. In addition, the influence of tooth surface texture on noise is described, and the texture change methods are explored. The well-known open problems of gear finishing are finally identified, and some new research interests are also pointed out. This review will provide valuable references for further research on gear finishing.

Abstract:Ultra-fine microgrinding (UMG) with tool diameter of about 100 μm is a promising processing method in producing microstructures, but its service life has always been an important factor restricting its development. In this paper, through the simulation of grain trajectory, the influences of machining parameters, tool diameter, grain size, and distribution on the number of effective grains in UMG are analyzed. The characteristics of UMG and the effects of machining parameters on the surface quality are analyzed; an undeformed chip thickness model considering the non-uniformity of grinding tool morphology also is established. It is found that the influence law of machining parameters on undeformed chip thickness in traditional grinding is not fully applicable to UMG, but the influence law of feeding velocity and cutting depth on UMG machining quality is consistent with that in traditional grinding. Besides, it is found that blindly increasing rotation speed, reducing cutting depth and feeding velocity are not conducive to improving the number of effective grains and the service life of UMG tools. In view of this, machining parameters in UMG are optimized by response surface method, and the optimized processing parameters are experimentally verified.
