CONNOTATORS, BLENDED SPACES, AND FIGURES OF GRAMMAR: REFLECTIONS ON TRADITIONAL CHINESE POETICS THROUGH A SEMIOTIC STUDY OF SU MANSHU’S POETRY

Abstract:This essay probes into the craft and criteria of traditional Chinese poetry through a study of Su Manshu’s poetry. Su Manshu has been praised as one of the last representative figures of classical Chinese poetry, while his distinctive poetic techniques rendered him a precursor of the New Literary Movement in the early years of the Republic of China. A semiotic examination of Su Manshu’s poetry and its intricate relationship with tradition and transformation in Late Qing literary arena makes an ideal case study of the criteria of classical Chinese poetry. Su Manshu’s poetry is interwoven with connotative elaboration —allusions, metaphors and multifarious figures of speech. Meanwhile, function words, colloquial markers and illocutionary acts play in its “less poetic” grammar, making it the construction of both archaic and modern transmutations in the era of paradigm shifts. The approaches of semiotics and linguistics are expected to offer novel perspectives of the poet, providing a methodology hitherto rarely used, if ever, in studies of Chinese poetics.

Abstract:To connect or to make connections is an indispensable procedure in interpersonal contact and understanding, a determining factor in the organization and development of human society, and a fundamental cause for the rise and growth of literature and arts. In the history of literature and arts, the places of making connections are those non-places where writers and artists meet and make friends and influence one another. Such non-places as salons, inns, coffee houses, and gathering places like Left Bank in Paris are very important in promoting literature and arts, but are somehow neglected by literary and art critics. This paper tries to examine the roles these non-places play in- and outside literature from the perspective of super-modernity, and meanwhile invites readers to experience personally the connections in the seemingly unconnected parts of the paper.

Abstract:Poetry-conception is the distinct characteristic of Chinese culture. With the poetry-conception, the process of urban planning is also the process of seeking and creating the Poem-city. There are positive meanings for urban planning to rear the ecology concept of harmonious relationship between the human and nature, to break the hackneyed pragmatistic work-mode that planning is same as the “executing" according to the normative and immovable procedure, and to rebuild the speaking-power of Chinese culture in the realm of urban planning.This paper elucidate that it is a new way of contemporory planning with characteristic of Chinese culture that having a poetry-heart, borrowing and developing rationaly the “fengshui",validating it with the theory of modern urban planning(including the theory of urban ecology), and finally looking for the sublimation of poetry-conception by the inspiration of Chinese poetry spirit.

Abstract:While modern adaptations of Chinese classics have drawn keen scholarly interests lately, the comic adaptation of Chinese traditional poetry remains under-investigated. Extending the previous research on intersemiotic translation and comics, this paper, drawing on the analytical framework of systemic functional semiotics, examines distribution of process types of language in poems in comparison with that in comic images in the exemplary case drawn by Cai Zhizhong, using UAM image as the annotation tool. The comic book formulates a multimodal corpus that consists of 1,097 clauses and 605 images. We have manually analyzed the process type of the poems and their corresponding comic panels. Our quantitative and qualitative results show that there are distinct patterns of process-type distributions between verbal poems and images. Poems have been turned into perceptions, actions, and verbal processes in comic strips, which serve various purposes such as construction of the poet's gaze, relations building, storyline development, dramatization, metaphor visualization, etc. The paper is concluded with discussion on how the intersemiotic translation of poems might produce effects on readers.

Abstract:The most essential character of modern poetry is that they are "written by lines",but it is seldom regarded by scholars as an important question.With respect to their tonal pattern,rhyme scheme and antithetical couplet,we can define the classical poetry as "the art of rhyme and meter",and they influenced modern rhyme-metered poetry.But with the development of modern poetry,the "art of lines" showed more and more important.Lines give modern poetry a natural "poetic space",nevertheless,there are independence and alienation between line and line.How to use the independence and alienation between lines becomes a special art of modern poetry,and to some extent it determines the level of obscurity of a poem.The use of enjambment is an important art in modern poetry;it affects the rhythm,style and ambiguity of a poem.With the "art of lines",the syntaxes of modern poetry also inherit some typical characters of classical poetry.

Abstract:The contemporary construction of ancient literary theory has been confusing Chinese academic cirle for a long time.It is urgent to reflect historically on the ancient literary theory resources and interpret them in a poetic way in the new century.Based on these worries,the Poetic Space of the Ancient Literary Theory show us the contemporary scholars' breadth of vision.The article expresses the idea that only under poetic construction can man and himself,man and object,man and the world be a whole,not separate.It is the ancient scholars' nearly mysterious poetic thoughts that make the world,the life and literature benefit from one another and bring man and the world into harmonious unity and the origin.So only by reconstructing the poetic space of the ancient literary theory,can the spiritual home of the modern people be restored in an effective way.

Abstract:Abstract In Heidegger, “thinking” and “poetry” are inseparable, and the interpretation of poetry is an important approach for him to express his philosophical thinking. His phenomenological approach is a path to return to the things themselves, i.e, to see the facticity and understand the meaning of existence in the lived experience of existential situations. Themes such as “anxiety”, “alien”, “soul and Earth”, “words” can reveal the existential situations in Chinese and German poems through a cross-cultural interpretation from Heidegger’s perspective.

Current Issues in Tourism

Abstract:Poetry discloses the fundamentals of truths and values about lives. Tourism in its purpose enhances tourists' well-being through inhabiting the environments of poetics and authenticity compared to everydayness. This study employs a hermeneutic phenomenological analysis of Three Hundred Tang Poems , guided by Heidegger's ideas of Dasein and being-in-the-world, to explore the intrinsic connection between poetry and tourism. This study also proposes a conceptual framework of 'tourist being-in-the-world'. Through the manual qualitative identification method, the findings reveal that: (a) the interpretation of the tourism essence should be grounded on the existential state of human being; (b) tourist being-in-the-world should be considered as a constitution of Dasein, as the most connotations in Three Hundred Tang Poems are associated with tourism (86.9%). Seeing life as a journey, men are born tourists in philosophy, who make sense of the experience of a tourist being-in-the-world (the appearance of authentic selves). Our findings elucidate how tourism destinations were depicted, manifested, and transcended by the Tang Poetry and highlight that the traditional Eastern ideologies of 'nature as humanity' and 'humanized nature in the sense of spirituality' were embedded in tourism.

Abstract:An important achievement of Tang Dynasty poetry was the birth of the theory of "Yijing". The theory of "Yijing" was an important category in Chinese classical aesthetics. During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the theory of "imagery" had been put forward. However, aestheticians in the Tang Dynasty did not stop at "imagery". In terms of one category, it is possible to elevate "imagery" to a new category of "yijing" through the enlightenment of Chan thought, which further promoted the development of poetry after the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:Abstract: The Tang and Song Dynasties were a time when Zen Buddhism was prevalent, and it was also a critical period for the rapid development of ancient Chinese literature. The literati at this time were generally influenced by Zen Buddhism thoughts, and their literary ideas were all-encompassing and rich in layers. Poetry was introduced into Buddhist gatha to explain Buddhist principles, and the infiltration of Zen made poetry have a pure and distant Zen state. Poetry and Zen merged with each other in the literati’s works, thus shining brilliantly in the history of ancient Chinese literature. This paper will start with the times’ background and specific poetic texts, focusing on the relationship between Zen Buddhism thoughts and poetic works in the Tang and Song Dynasties, in order to explore how the two combine and influence each other.

Abstract:The shaping of artistic characteristics and prosperity of the Tang poetry are closely related to its system of three dominant styles, current style, classic style and Yuefu style. The poets in the Tang Dynasty had superior advantages in utilizing the system of current and classic styles to later generations, hence the term “advantages of the style system of Tang poetry”, which offers us a different view in understanding and studying Tang poetry. The relationship between poem and song and between current and classic styles in the style system of Tang poetry reveals the two leading contradictions and, through interaction of the two contradictions, becomes the two dominant advantages in the system.

Abstract:Phonological beauty is an important aesthetic feature of poetry. Reproduction of Chinese ancient poetry’s phonological beauty in English translation is of great significance. Professor Xu Yuanchong is an accomplished poetry translator who creatively reproduce original Chinese poems’ phonological beauty by employing various techniques such as alliteration, end rhyme, repetition, onomatopoeia, etc. This suggests that Chinese poetry’s phonological beauty can be reproduced in English translations although they realize their respective phonological beauties through their respective unique devices.

Abstract:YAN Shu was a ci poet who had, in his ci creations, his rich emotions and feelings fused into the sober rationalness, His ci poems depict the elapsing of for in a meticulous way and with a keen sense of realization, embodying philosophy of extreme joy begetting sorrow, and giving vent to emotions and feelings in such a way as being joyful without wantonness and being sorrowful without self-injury, to the extent that they display the beautiful of the golden mean of the Confucian doctrine. The style of his ci poems is refreshing, lively, elegant, clear and quiet, possessing a literary value no one was able to afford to overlook in the world of ci poetry in the begining of the Song Dynasty.

Abstract:As a contribution to comparative East-West poetics, this essay descries a common resource of Western and classical Chinese literatures in certain “apophatic” modes of thought and discourse that are oriented to what cannot be said, to what is manifest only in and through a certain evasion and defiance of all efforts to verbalize and conceptualize it. This argument is developed in critical counterpoint with the work of interpreting Chinese classical poetry and thought by the French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien. Jullien acutely apprehends and elegantly expounds the deeply apophatic bent of Chinese poetics. However, he sets Chinese thought and poetry categorically apart from Western approaches, whereas my analysis brings them together under the aegis of their common inspiration from the experience of the limits of language vis-à-vis an unspeakable origin of thinking and its source in reality.
