Abstract:This article is concerned with the influence of welfare culture on society's old age support institutions and practice. It examines the development of old age support programs in contemporary China from a cultural perspective in an attempt to reveal the interaction between social welfare patterns for the elderly and social policy-makers' conception of social welfare and traditional social welfare culture. What stands in the way of the transition of Chinese social welfare for the elderly from a residual to an institutional model is a value system founded on restrictions and lack of awareness of civil rights. These factors limit the role of social welfare in narrowing the gaps between different social strata in the aged population and lead to inequitable welfare resource distribution. Although an aging population and the diffusion of welfare state culture are pushing the Chinese social welfare system toward diversified development, its final establishment still depends on a reexamination by the public and policy-makers of the relationship between individual citizens and the state.

Abstract:The burden of support for the elderly, intergenerational relationships and value realization constitute three vital factors that will shape China's sustainable development in the future. These three issues translate themselves into the problem of "fewer producers and more consumers" in the field of economics, or intergenerational conflicts over distribution of resources and power and the issue of old people's value realization in the field of sociology. From the perspective of demography, old persons who are vulnerable as a result of family planning occupy an ever increasing proportion of the population, and China can expect to see a large number of "elderly people affected by family planning." This concept has been formulated to draw the attention of government and government departments at all levels to the public benefit and welfare character of public services in population and family planning. Aging poses long-term and diverse challenges to a China that is getting old before it gets rich. In response to such challenges, this paper proposes a strategy of "successful aging" that foresees an old age of health, activity, harmony and happiness. In responding to population aging and the challenges it poses, Chinese society has developed a unique approach that combines tradition with modern elements. This approach may be summarized as being based on old age support by families, work units (collectives) and self-help, supplemented by the community, social welfare and philanthropy. The paper concludes with a brief review of the contributions in this special issue within the framework of "China's problem and China's choices."

Abstract:Professor Wucangping, the editor ofBuilding a Moderately Prosperous Society and Coping with Population Ageing Actively puts forward three propositions such as “development”“harmony” and “sharing” to highly summarize the strategic thinking and policy orientation of coping with the ageing of the population actively in our country.The nature of the ageing problem is development, and economic development, social development, cultural development and population development and the development of elderly may promote (positive cycle) or hinder each other(negative cycles).Age covers the meaning of symbols the function, so it can be divided into “symbol age” (calendar age) and the “function age” (condition age).The book has carried on a new discussion of “healthy ageing” and “active ageing”. The inter-generational relations affect signiifcantly the well-being of the elderly. The construction of a harmonious and mutual respectful intergenerational relation is the key meaning of building an ideal society which is “regardless of age, everyone sharing”. Sharing is the basic way to improve the elderly welfare of the elderly.

Abstract:China is entering an aging society at the fastest pace in history, with 14 percent of the total population aged 65 and over in 2022. There would be nearly 500 million older people in China by 2050 if 60 years and over is used as a criterion for defining the elderly population. Population aging, accompanied by large-scale urban-rural population mobility, poses many challenges to urban development and impacts traditional concepts and models of old age. The separation of the elderly from their customary society may lead to fragmentation and atomization of the individual, posing a severe test to their social participation and physical and mental health. In this context, public cultural services, with their unique social and cultural functions, play a unique role in promoting the concept of positive aging. This paper will start from the theoretical foundation of positive aging, explore the cultural dilemmas faced by the aging group, and summarize several suggestions for the development of public cultural services through the case studies of the construction of age-friendly cities in New York and Shanghai.

Abstract:Abstract The deepening of the aging population has increased the pressure on social security and public services, affected social vitality, innovation power, and potential economic growth rate. Fortunately, with the development of science, the "Smart City" is also being built, so how to utilize intelligent technology to deal with the aging issue is a worthy orientation. Abstract:Population aging is a common future vision in the world. The Aging process in the developed country is ahead of that in China and their innovations and reform measures dealing with aging society deserve our learning. In the aspect of coping with aging society, it is emphasized that the government should attach importance to top-level design of economic and social policies, encourage childbirth and positive immigrant projects, and promote human resource development and social participation of the elderly. In the aspect of the solving elderly problem, it is emphasized that the government, market, families and the elderly themselves should face it together. We should not only pay attention to the safeguard for the special elderly, but also reinforce the security to all the old people. It is necessary to advocate "the combination of medical care and the pension", complete health and social care system for the elderly, intensify social pension system and stabilize home-based care system, classify the services, achieve the aim that taking care for both the special group and the health group of the old at the same time.

Abstract:In order to investigate the reading and public library utility condition of the elderly,the author conducted a questionnaire survey among 205 older adults in 5 districts in Beijing,300 older adults in 5 villages of Zhushan county,Hubei province.According to the results,the elderly mainly regard reading as a way for leisure,and they pay less time and money for reading.Besides,their reading situation is affected by education,income and job to some extent.The elderly show passive and restrictive characteristics in reading.They are affected by a lot of factors and spare little time and money in reading.While in public library utility,though public library has certain status in life of the elderly,in general,their cognition and utilization degree are on the low side.Therefore,public library should improve themselves in layout,resource,facilities and service,in which library should pay more attention to the elderly.

Abstract:This paper explores the Confucian roots of elderly care expectations and how these expectations may influence the current state of the elderly and elderly care in modern China. This paper posits that the outdated expectations combined with recent urbanization trends has put unrealistic pressures on society to adequately care for a rapidly aging population. Until expectations are adjusted to reflect modern day families and realities, the elderly will continue to struggle with a sense of inadequate care, which can lead to mental health issues and feelings of isolation. Once the shackles of Confucian expectations are removed, families, governments and private institutions will have the freedom to be more creative in the way they imagine solutions for elderly care.

Abstract:At present, the aging population in cities is growing sharply, and the problem of elderly-oriented urban public spaces is gradually coming to the fore and urgently needs noticing and addressing. As an illustration, we may take Dazhou City as an example. Conclusion can be drew form the questionnaires and offline visits that the elderly generally have difficulties in traveling, shopping and medical care, affected by the lack of community infrastructure, their physical condition, living habits and knowledge structure, etc. We propose to improve the adaptability of the elderly, build a comprehensive system of elderly services, create an elderly-oriented urban space as well as an atmosphere of respect for them to level their well-being index up and settle the issue of elderly-oriented retrofitting of urban public space.

Abstract:In China where people advocate filial piety and share the happiness of a family reunion specifically, how to fulfill the filial duty and take good care of the elderly people who make great contribution to the human and social development, and then provide generous returns to them is regarded as a matter of political event to promote people's livelihood and ensure social harmony and stability. Therefore, based on the trend of "421" and population aging of Chinese families in 21st century, the paper analyzes traditional model of family aged-care and social aged-care. Through field survey and case studies, we propose many new models and ideas such as aged-care at home which is rooted in the family, connected with the community and largely relies on the professional service teams with the purpose of providing intellectual support as well as reference value for the government.

Abstract:With the progress of society and economic development, China has reached an aging population. According tothe Chinese population census data, China has entered the second stage of an aging population society and has become one of the countries with the fastest growth rate of the elderly population in the world. It is expected that the elderly population in China will reach 250 million within the next fifteen years and exceed 450 million by 2050. Additionally, China is a country with uneven development between urban and rural areas. Many young and middle-aged people choose to work in cities, which leads to most rural residents being elderly. Thus, the phenomenon of the elderly living alone by themselves occurs. Therefore, the government and related experts are increasingly concerned about the physical and mental health of the elderly. The establishment of the elderly activity center is to meet the needs of the elderly cultural life, improve the level of elderly physical and mental health, and promote the harmonious development of the countryside. Many countries aware of this problem would emphasize park construction and nursing home design for the needs of the elderly. However, little research are performed on the activity center and public spaces for the elderly in underdeveloped rural areas. Design countermeasures of the public space should consider the physical, psychological, and behavioral needs of the elderly. This study summarizes the influencing factors, design principles, and design methods of public spaces to effectively meet the needs of the elderly for public activities. By creating and improving public social spaces suitable for the elderly in rural areas, the elderly can lead a comfortable life and solve loneliness issues.

Abstract:The problem of population aging is becoming more and more serious, especially under the mode of community-based elderly care, the demand of elderly residents for community public space is becoming more and more prominent. In this paper, through the study of representative elderly care communities in the United States, Japan, Singapore and South Korea, the design strategy of community public space for aging is discussed. The research content covers spatial structure planning, barrier-free design, intelligent elderly care equipment, green landscape proportion, public service facilities distribution and other aspects, aiming to optimize the community environment to meet the physiological and psychological needs of the elderly. Through comparative analysis, this paper puts forward the guidelines for the design of aging, expecting to provide theoretical reference for the development of community-based elderly care mode in the future, and build a more harmonious, stable and livable community.

Abstract:China is in a stage of rapid aging of its population, and its old-age dependency ratio has been increasing for decades. The acceleration of aging of the population and the increasing old-age dependency ratio will significantly increase the pressure on social security and public services, highlight the need for the effective supply of labor, and weaken the demographic dividend, which will continue to affect social vitality, the power to innovate, and potential economic growth rates. Promoting social engagement has been widely recognized as an effective strategy to address these challenges. Such an approach not only promotes the development of social productivity, but it also alleviates the social burden. Actively promoting the social engagement of the elderly is an important task in gerontology in China. Although the development of social engagement of the elderly is on the rise, the infrastructure and institutions to provide social engagement need to be enhanced. Improving social engagement in China is not just the responsibility of older adults themselves but also of the country and society as a whole. In the future, the entire society will fully understand the special role of older adults and increase their value through social engagement to achieve active and healthy aging in China.

Abstract:Along with the increase of aging population and empty-nest families in China,a series of social issues with the aging population have become the focus of academic studies.The Researches at macro-level,such as aging process and ways of caring for the aged,provide policy guidance for the government.On the other hand,if we want to estimate the effects of the government's policies,especially for aged people's daily lives,we should analyze the interactions between the elderly individuals and the environment at micro-level,namely,the research on spatial behaviors of the elderly.Moreover,the research helps provide guidance for urban planning which could improve aged people's life quality and promote social justice in space resources by controlling structural evolution of urban spaces based on the demands of the elderly's lives and their living conditions.In this paper we discuss the current multi-disciplinary researches on the elderly's daily lives in China.Based on the awareness of the elderly's lifestyles and Maslow's hierarchy of needs,we conclude that health seeking,shopping,and leisure behavior are the main activities of senior citizens' daily lives in China.Therefore,this paper focuses on these three types of behaviors,reviews the progress of correlational studies by combing through the domestic literature on the subject,then summarizes the behavioral characteristics of the elderly and the influencing factors,especially the interactive mechanism between urban space and residents' behavior during the transition time in China.We synthetically assess the advantage,disadvantage and inadequacy of the studies we have covered,based on the analyses of the current status and the trend of the elderly's behaviors at home.By comparing to the research status of international geographical gerontology which is composed of multiple academic disciplines,we predict the trend of further studies in the macro background of social-cultural and spatial environment changes,and expect that the high-level needs of self-fulfillment of the elderly could be met in a favorable environment with supporting service facilities and community services.

Abstract:In the current changing society, the elderly need the zest for living. For acquiring satisfactory health care and management, an adequate degree of health literacy would be required. From the research of Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and Short Test of Functional Health Literacy Assessment (S-TOFHLA), significant differences were found in living in urban areas, regular exercise, medical service-seeking behavior, occupation, self-care ability and others. For higher health literacy, the significance of cultural and recreational activities would be advocated, such as sports and music. This continuation would bring appropriate long-term care services and support (LTSS), leading to well-being, satisfaction and happiness.
