Abstract:The ideology about the relation between goodness and beauty for Confucius and the early Confucians is the continuation of the aesthetic tradition long before Confucius’s time, which sees more value in Yuejiao, namely, music/beauty education, than in Lijiao, Moral education. No doubt Confucius’s aesthetic idea is featured as the juxtaposition of Li and Yue, goodness and beauty. But we must not forget that Confucius, taking himself as a preserver of the sages’ tradition, personally values Yue (music/beauty) over Li (ritual/moral). It is in this context that we argue that taking the unity of beauty and goodness as a Confucian aesthetic feature is a misinterpretation of his teaching and is poles apart from the ancient Chinese aesthetic tradition and from Confucius’ aesthetics.

Abstract:Abstract Chinese aesthetics mainly derives from Confucianism and Taoism. This essay attempts to revisit the main theories that run through Confucian and Taoist aesthetics in order to make them comprehensible within a broader global context. Aesthetics in Confucianism pertains to fields as various as literature, art, music and the natural environment. It holds the idea of ren 仁 (human-heartedness) as the essential attribute of beauty. In comparison, Taoist aesthetics emphasizes the centrality of tao 道 (way), which transpires through naturalness, and, as such, considers natural forms to offer the highest degree of beauty. In order to understand variations of representation and interpretation in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, the essay discusses accordingly the three fundamentals of Chinese aesthetics: beauty, feeling of beauty, and artistic image. This comparative study will hopefully bring to light differences and similarities between two traditions, which may also resonate within the wider context of modern global aesthetics.

Abstract:About 60 years ago, Tang Junyi 唐君毅 (Tang Chun-i), Mou Zongsan 牟宗三 (Mou Tsung-san), Xu Fuguan 徐復觀 (Hsu Fu-kuan), and Zhang Junmai 張君勱 (Carson Chang) published "A Manifesto for a Reappraisal of Sinology and Reconstruction of Chinese Culture." In the Manifesto, these major representatives of contemporary New Confucianism tried to rectify Westerners' biases and reestablish Chinese people's cultural confidence by upholding the Confucian learning of the heart-mind as the core of Chinese culture. Following the same approach, some prominent scholars today continue the effort of bringing Confucianism to a new epoch through reappropriating metaphysical theories of the heart-mind and human nature of the Zisi 子思–Mencius lineage, which flourished in the Song-Ming 宋明 period. This article critically reflects on this approach and argues that the Confucian learning of the heart-mind and human nature should not be taken so much as a mirror that reflects metaphysical reality than as a lever that directs and uplifts human vision and gongfu 功夫/工夫 (the art of life). In the cultural context today, revealing the gongfu nature of Confucianism can help us appreciate the real value of Confucianism as a constructive resource for global culture.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the modern analysis of approaches to the image of nature in Ancient Chinese philosophy. In the research, the author focuses attention on the image of nature as an important element for research in ecological and philosophical discourses. The concept of understanding the concept of Nature in ancient Chinese philosophy is revealed. Attention is drawn to the peculiarity of Ancient Chinese philosophy as one of the oldest philosophies in the world, the specifics of its thinking and understanding of nature are revealed, which influenced the development of human civilization in general. The main question of this study is the analysis of approaches to the transcription of the image of nature in ancient Chinese philosophy and its significance for modern human civilization. By reviewing and analyzing the relevant literature, the evolution of this phenomenon is revealed.

Abstract:The entrance of "nature" from English to Chinese and the transformation of the word ziran in Chinese had been intertwined together. In the formal process, "nature" was not translated as ziran at first while in the latter process, the western concept and Chinese ideas of nature combined together with multiple, comprehensive meanings in the history of modern China. This means the second process consists some major transformations of ziran as a key concept in modern China. Firstly, it has been a process of materialization for the traditional concept of ziran from ancient China. Secondly, traditional ideas of nature like tian, tianran, ziran, got revived during their association and collaborations with western understandings of nature as a concept of naturalist philosophy. Thirdly, it was also in this process where a humanistic and existential definition of ziran began to emerge, not only as a response to the materialized understanding of ziran, but also created the confrontation between a material occidental civilization and a spiritual oriental civilization. This dualist view not only ignored other thought like Romantism, Humanism and ideas which go against materialism or scientism, but also overlooked materialism and scientism itself in the history of Modern China.

Abstract:Xunzi insists that human nature is evil.According to Xunzi,the meanings of emo-tion(Qing,情),nature(Xing,性)and desire(Yu,欲)are generally similar.They all manifest as a love of profit and the desire to obtain it.Therefore,a person cannot love morality intrinsical-ly if following his inborn nature.However,the inborn nature(or desire)can be shaped and transformed according to Xunzi.Through this transformation of inborn nature,a person can cre-ate the motivation to pursue morality and ritual principles."T ransforming the inborn nature and developing the acquired nature"(Hua xing qi wei,化性起伪)is a way to realize this moral trans-formation."Transforming the inborn nature"(Hua xing,化性)could modify manifestation pat-terns of inborn nature and desires of a person."Developing the acquired nature"(Qi wei,起伪), which contains changes of one's cognition,deliberation,evaluation,believes and so on,is a fur-ther step after"Transforming the inborn nature"(Hua xing,化性).Because of the influence of this process,one would question himself on his desires and the objects of desires,such as"why to pursue","how to pursue","whether to pursue".And therefore,it then makes creation of new motivation and transformation to moral life possible.

Abstract:The Chinese people lay stress on intuition and the method of imaginative mind that is more irrational, while the thought popularized by political power is rational. The irrational factor in this rational thought had been growing daily in the process of introspection under the influence of Buddhism. Till the middle and later period of Ming Dynasty, when economy was developed, daily life of food and clothe were emphasized, and the social orientation was utilitarian, the threshold of ration was broken through. Geng Dingxiang attacked Li Zhi, and led a wholesome change in value, theory of human nature, ethics and aesthetics. The Chinese thought of humanity and aesthetics has completed a historical transition from the rational to the irrational. This process is identified by the conception of self-life, which is transformed from family ties to non-family ties, the conception of equality, which is transformed from hierarchy to non-authority, the conception of humanistic private interest, which is transformed from humanistic justice to non-justice, the conception of sexual desire ontology, which is transformed from ethical ontology to non-ethical ontology, a conception of the beauty of frankness and directness, which is transformed from the beauty of mediocrity to non-mediocrity.

Abstract:The real grand in modern and contemporary Chinese literatur is moral narration.Its substantial content can find expression in above everything and personal morality first.Though the May 4th literary movement advocated morality against old morality,which was a revolutionary mark of narrative conversion,certain fundamental value principles of traditional moral narration still played a decisive role in the deeper structure of morality.The promotion of new morality is closely related with traditional moral narration.Moral narration,on the one hand,is the extension of the aesthetic principle of above everything,on the other,it gradually develops into aesthetically pragmatic moral narration.
