Abstract:The movement of nanoparticles across cell membranes in a controlled manner is important for developing applications related to filtration, penetration, and biological systems. Here, the tunable transport of metal nanoparticle suspensions with well‐defined particle sizes and surface groups through a ≈1 mm‐thick porous carbon nanotube sponge filter is reported. Au particles with a relatively large diameter (40 nm) alone are easily trapped by the nanotube sponge even in a dilute water flow, but they can quickly pass through the sponges by the addition of much smaller particles (4 nm) to the suspension. A mechanistic study shows that the dominating interaction mode between Au particles and the sponge is physical trapping within the nanotube networks rather than Coulomb attraction. In the nanoparticle mixture, surface groups on the small particles tend to form hydrogen bonds with groups on large particles, thereby increasing interparticle distances, and preventing formation of severe agglomerates; large particles can therefore move across interconnected nanotubes more smoothly. It might be possible to switch the transport of many different nanoparticles across porous media on and off by adding or removing smaller particles of the same type.
Transport and Retention of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles under Unfavorable Deposition Conditions Caused by Repulsive Van Der Waals Force in Saturated Porous Media.

Abstract:Currently, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have been widely used in industry, manufacturing and agriculture. The transport and retention of CuO NPs are vital to understanding the fate as well as the life cycle of CuO NPs in the environment. This study systematically investigates the transport and retention of CuO NPs in saturated porous media, and the experimental results were explained by the CFT and DLVO theory. The van der Waals force between CuO NPs and collector was repulsive, resulting in the unfavorable deposition condition. Column experiments were conducted with saturated quartz sand under environmentally relevant pH (6, 8, 9), ionic strength (IS, 1, 10, 50 mM), and humic acid (HA, 0.1-10 mg-C/mL). Experimental results show that the breakthrough curves (BCTs) were affected by different pH and IS. Under pH 6 and 9, the mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by high IS while the mobility was inhibited by high IS under pH 8. The mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by humic acid and the effect was best at 0.5 mg-C/mL HA. The experimental results were successfully explained by CFT and DLVO theory, the main mechanisms were aggregation of CuO NPs, interaction energy and collision between CuO NPs and collector. In general, these findings can improve our understanding of the transport and retention of CuO NPs in subsurface environments, and suggest pH, IS, HA may be key factors governing mobility and stability of CuO NPs in natural environment. Abstract:Titania nanotube arrays were fabricated through anodic oxidation of Ti substrates in a glycol‐based electrolyte and sensitized with pyrite FeS2 by using cathodic electrodeposition of Fe/Fe2O3 followed by sulfurizing with evaporative sulfur. The field emission scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, Raman, and XPS characterizations evidenced a successful sensitization of the nanotubes with ca. 3.8 wt% FeS2. The UV‐Vis spectra confirmed the extension of the absorption edge to visible light for the titania nanotube arrays after the sensitization. The much‐enhanced visible light response of the FeS2‐sensitized film under the simulated solar light was revealed by the photocurrent and open‐circuit potential measurements. Because of the high light‐harvesting efficiency, the pyrite FeS2 is found to be an effective sensitizer for titania nanotube arrays to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under solar light illumination.

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.
Porous Carbon–titania Nanocomposite Films for Spectrally Solar Selective Absorbers

Abstract:Selective solar absorbers based on composition of porous titania and carbon with a well-defined interconnected macropores structure have been fabricated by a photopolymerization-induced phase-separation method in the framework of a sol–gel technique. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry were used to characterize the C–TiO2 films. The results showed that the macroporous structures of the films could be tuned by changing the reaction parameters. The reduction of the HNO3 concentration in the solution effectively decreases the mean size of pores, carbon content, and the thickness of the nanocomposite films, leading to an optimization of the spectral selective absorption performance. The solar absorptance (α) and thermal emittance (ε) of the optimized single layer film with a thickness of about 300nm were about 0.95 and 0.12, respectively. The films also show good stability under the high temperature (~500°C). Based on these results, porous carbon–titania composite films proved to be a good candidate as solar selective absorbers.

Abstract:The mechanism of water infiltration into a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) was investigated based on the molecular dynamics simulation. The influence of chemical functionalisation treatment on unsaturated carbon atoms at the entrance of a SWCNT was explored. The chemical functionalisation treatment with hydroxyl groups can effectively reduce the critical pressure barrier and facilitate water molecules to invade a SWCNT. Conversely, the hydrogen groups can intensify the non-wetting ability of a SWCNT. In addition, the hydrogenated entrance system is of higher recovery performance under dynamic loading, while the system with hydroxylated entrance shows poor performance. The observed unique mechanisms provide a possible method in energy absorption and conversion.
Hindered Nanoparticle Diffusion and Void Accessibility in A Three-Dimensional Porous Medium

Abstract:The inherent pore-scale heterogeneity of many natural and synthetic porous materials can make it difficult to model and predict porous transport because the underlying microscopic processes are often poorly understood. Here we present the results of single-particle tracking experiments in which we followed the pore-scale diffusion of individual nanoparticles, deep within a three-dimensional porous material of moderate porosity. We observed significant hydrodynamic damping of particle motion at subpore length scales, resulting in heterogeneous and spatially dependent mobility. The accessibility of the void space was strongly dependent on particle size, and related to the heterogeneous hydrodynamics. Our results suggest that pore-scale diffusion is more heterogeneous and volume accessibility more limited than previously expected. The method demonstrated here will enable studies of a broad new class of materials including porous polymers of technological interest.

Abstract:The transport behaviors of proton into nanoporous materials were investigated using different Monte Carlo simulation codes such as GEANT4, Deeper and SRIM. The results indicated that porous structure could enhance the proton scattering effects due to a higher specific surface area and more boundaries. The existence of voids can deepen and widen the proton distribution in the targets due to relatively lower apparent density. Thus, the incident protons would transport deeper and form a wider Bragg peak in the end of the range, as the target materials are in a higher porosity state and/or have a larger pore size. The existence of voids also causes the local inhomogeneity of proton/energy distribution in micro/nano scales. As compared, the commonly used SRIM code can only be used to estimate roughly the incident proton range in nanoporous materials, based on a homogeneous apparent density equivalence rule. Moreover, the estimated errors of the proton range tend to increase with the porosity. The Deeper code (designed for evaluation of radiation effects of nuclear materials) can be used to simulate the transport behaviors of protons or heavy ions in a real porous material with porosity smaller than 52.3% due to its modeling difficulty, while the GEANT4 code has shown advantages in that it is suitable and has been proven to simulate proton transportation in nanoporous materials with porosity in its full range of 0%~100%. The GEANT4 simulation results are proved consistent with the experimental data, implying compatibility to deal with ion transportation into homogeneously nanoporous materials.

Abstract:Optical absorption and photocatalytic activity can be enhanced by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, but the charge transfer (CT) mechanism between the dispersed noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and the semiconductor matrix has been ignored. Herein, we adduce a direct and strong evidence in Ag-nanoparticle-dispersed BaTiO3 (Ag/BTO) composite films through X-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence spectra which reveals the CT from BTO trapped by Ag NPs under UV light and from Ag NPs to BTO under visible light. Owing to the broadened optical absorption and efficient CT from Ag NPs to BTO, the Ag25/BTO film manifests the optimal photocatalytic activity under the irradiation of visible light rather than UV–Vis light. Our work provides a helpful insight to design highly efficient plasmonic photocatalyst through considering the synergetic effect of the CT between metal and semiconductor on the enhanced photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Iron-filled carbon-nitrogen ( Fe/CNx) nanotubes and iron-filled carbon ( Fe/C) nanotubes were synthesized at 900 degrees C through a pyrolysis reaction of ferrocene/acetonitrile and ferrocene/xylene, respectively. The differences of structure and composition between the Fe/CNx nanotubes and Fe/C nanotubes were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy ( EELS). It was found that the morphology of Fe/CNx nanotubes is more corrugated than that of the Fe/C nanotubes due to the incorporation of nitrogen. By comparing the Fe L-2,L-3 electron energy-loss spectra of Fe/CNx nanotubes to those of the Fe/C nanotubes, the electron states at the interface between Fe and the tubular wall of both Fe/CNx nanotubes and Fe/C nanotubes were investigated. At the boundary between Fe and the wall of a CNx nanotube, the additional electrons contributed from the doped 'pyridinic-like' nitrogen might transfer to the empty 3d orbital of the encapsulated iron, therefore leading to an intensity suppression of the iron L-2,L-3 edge and an intensity enhancement of the carbon K edge. However, such an effect could not be found in Fe/C nanotubes. Microwave absorption properties of both Fe/CNx and Fe/C nanocomposites at 2-18 GHz band were studied.
Systematic Determination Of Absolute Absorption Cross-Section Of Individual Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Optical absorption is the most fundamental optical property characterizing light-matter interactions in materials and can be most readily compared with theoretical predictions. However, determination of optical absorption cross-section of individual nanostructures is experimentally challenging due to the small extinction signal using conventional transmission measurements. Recently, dramatic increase of optical contrast from individual carbon nanotubes has been successfully achieved with a polarization-based homodyne microscope, where the scattered light wave from the nanostructure interferes with the optimized reference signal (the reflected/transmitted light). Here we demonstrate high-sensitivity absorption spectroscopy for individual single-walled carbon nanotubes by combining the polarization-based homodyne technique with broadband super-continuum excitation in transmission configuration. To our knowledge, this is the first time that high-throughput and quantitative determination of nanotube absorption cross-section over broad spectral range at the single-tube level was performed for more than 50 individual chirality-defined single-walled nanotubes. Our data reveal chirality-dependent behaviors of exciton resonances in carbon nanotubes, where the exciton oscillator strength exhibits a universal scaling law with the nanotube diameter and the transition order. The exciton linewidth (characterizing the exciton lifetime) varies strongly in different nanotubes, and on average it increases linearly with the transition energy. In addition, we establish an empirical formula by extrapolating our data to predict the absorption cross-section spectrum for any given nanotube. The quantitative information of absorption cross-section in a broad spectral range and all nanotube species not only provides new insight into the unique photophysics in one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, but also enables absolute determination of optical quantum efficiencies in important photoluminescence and photovoltaic processes.

Abstract:In this study, effects of different nanoparticles and porosity of absorber tube on the performance of a Concentrating Parabolic Solar Collector (CPSC) were investigated. A section of porous-filled absorber tube was modeled as a semi-circular cavity under the solar radiation which is filled by nanofluids and the governing equations were solved by FlexPDE numerical software. The effect of four physical parameters, nanoparticles type, nanoparticles volume fraction (φ), Darcy number (Da) and Rayleigh number (Ra), on the Nusselt number (Nu) was discussed. It turns out that Cu nanoparticle is the most suitable one for such solar collectors, compared to the commonly used Fe3O4, Al2O3, TiO2. With the increased addition of Cu nanoparticles all the parameters φ, Da and Ra shows a significant increase against the Nu, indicates the enhanced heat transfer in such cases. As a result, low concentration of Cu nanoparticle suspension combined with porous matrix was supposed to be beneficial for the performance enhancement of concentrating parabolic solar collector.
In Situfabrication of Hierarchically Porous G-C3n4 and Understanding on Its Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity Based on Energy Absorption

Abstract:A novel strategy is proposed to in situ synthesize hierarchically porous g-C3N4 foam (FCN) with no carbon residue by low-cost polyurethane sponge as single template. The porous system consists of interconnected micron (1-2 mu m) and nano-scale (20-80 nm) pores, which is usually constructed tediously. For visible light catalysis, the FCN with unique hierarchical pores possesses higher efficiency for H-2 generation (8 times) and phenol degradation (4 times) over pristine g-C3N4 due to the increased BET surface area, accelerated mass transfer and improved efficiency of exciton generation and dissociation, which all derive from the hierarchical pore system. Further, an optical simulation is initially adopted to illustrate the effect of the hierarchical porosity with micron and nano-scale pores on the ability of light absorption and penetration over FCN and an energy-absorption-based explanation is proposed to deeply explain the enhanced photocatalytic activity, which opens a window to directly understand the relationship of the enhanced photocatalytic activities and absorbed light energy increased by the hierarchical pores system.
Enhancement And Suppression Effect Of Molecules On Nanocavity Plasmon Emissions Excited By Tunneling Electrons

Abstract:We use tunneling electron induced luminescence techniques to investigate the role of adsorbed molecules in nanocavity plasmon (NCP) mediated emissions. Porphyrin molecules directly adsorbed on metals are found to suppress NCP emissions, while molecules on top of an inserted ultrathin oxide layer on the metal substrate yield enhanced NCP emissions. We attribute such difference in enhancement versus suppression to a competing mechanism of two major roles of molecules on the local field enhancement: geometrical spacer and dynamic dipole oscillator. The latter could become dominant when molecules are sufficiently decoupled from the substrate, leading to the overall enhancement of NCP emissions. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Abstract:Semiconducting nanoparticles with lower bandgap (e.g., CdS) are alternative photocatalysts to TiO2, since they have a potentially wider range light of absorption and improved catalytic efficiency. However, they must be securely anchored on a porous substrate for practical applications. Here, we report a hybrid porous photocatalyst fabricated by grafting 4–6 nm diameter CdS nanoparticles uniformly throughout the entire macroporous structure of a three-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge. The unique feature of our structure is that only the CdS nanoparticles grafted on the outside surface are active in photocatalysis, while other nanoparticles are stored inside the sponge in the fresh state for use when the catalyst is recycled. Our CdS-CNT hybrid sponges show high efficiency in removing organic contaminants from water. Spectroscopic measurements show that the hybrid sponges are multifunctional, simultaneously performing organic molecular adsorption (using the inter-CNT spacing), and photocatalytic decomposition (by the CdS nanoparticles grafted on the surface), both of which contribute to water purification. Furthermore, the surface part of the sponges can be stripped off to expose inner nanoparticles for use when the catalyst is recycled, without performance degradation.

Abstract:Here we report the presence of an unexpected fluorescence enhancement zone (E-zone) in the mechanically mixed system of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and upconversion fluorescent nanoparticles (UCNPs). This new finding differs from the traditional consideration that black SPIONs are always strong light absorbers. Our study also showed that the quenching behavior of UCNPs in the quenching zone (Q-zone) by SPIONs is surface state-dependent, with a lower quenching effect when UCNPs was shielded with a hydrophilic silica shell.

Abstract:Abstract Three-dimensional Au network films with flexibility and transferability were fabricated based on sputtering deposition onto electrospun nanofibers as a template. The films are constructed using long Au nanotubes that are cross-linked with each other and that have dense nanoparticles on the tube wall surface. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks for the films are tunable in a wide range, from visible light to the near-infrared region, by tuning the inner diameter and/or wall thickness of the nanotubes. Such structured film exhibits significant surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity with good signal uniformity and stability, and possesses great potential in the in situ detection of trace organic pollutants on a solid surface by simple transferring. This study provides a Au film with a unique structure and widely tunable SPR for in situ SERS sensing and other needs.

Abstract:Porous nanosponges, percolated with a three-dimensional network of 10-nm sized ligaments, recently emerged as promising substrates for plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy and (photo-)catalysis. Experimental and theoretical work suggests surface plasmon localization in some hot-spot modes as the physical origin of their unusual optical properties, but so far the existence of such hot-spots has not been proven. Here we use scattering-type scanning near-field nano-spectroscopy on individual gold nanosponges to reveal spatially and spectrally confined modes with 10 nanometer localization lengths by mapping the local optical density of states. High quality factors of individual hot-spots of more than 40 are demonstrated. A statistical analysis of near-field intensity fluctuations unveils plasmonics in the strong localization regime. The observed field localization and enhancement make such nanosponges an appealing platform for a variety of applications ranging from nonlinear optics to strong-coupling physics.
