Abstract:Major challenges existing in the photocatalytic gas-liquid mixing system model include the mass transfer limit at the gas-liquid interface and the depth of light penetration. For this purpose, amphiphilic molecular catalysts were prepared by monovacancy phosphomolybdate modified by propyltrimethoxysilane. It is also used as a photocatalyst in the model reaction (molecular oxygen oxidation of aromatic alcohol). The amphiphilic molecular catalyst in the reaction is similar to surfactant behavior, not only can adsorb in the gas-liquid interface, ensure the direct contact between oxygen, catalyst and reactants, improve the efficiency of mass transfer, and also reduce the surface tension of aromatic alcohol, gas-liquid-solid three-phase system into foam system. The formed foam system amplifies the interface area of the reaction, enhances the light penetration depth and significantly promotes the reaction rate. The insights gained from our study provide a new perspective on the design of photocatalysis in a gas-liquid hybrid system.

Abstract:Mass transfer of guest molecules in nanoporous crystalline materials has gained attention in catalysis, separation, electrochemistry, and other fields. Two mechanisms, surface barriers and intracrystalline diffusion, dominate the mass transport process. Lack of methods to separately quantify these two mechanisms restricts further understanding and thus rational design and efficient application of nanoporous materials. Here we derive an approximate expression of uptake rate relying solely on surface permeability, offering an approach to directly quantify surface barriers and intracrystalline diffusion. By use of this approach, we study the diffusion in zeolitic materials, and find that the intracrystalline diffusivity is intrinsic to the topological structure of host materials at low molecular loading for the given guest molecules, while the surface permeability is sensitive to the non-ideality of a crystalline surface owing to the physical and chemical properties of the crystalline surface, host–guest interaction at the surface, and change of the environment.

High-performance Heterogeneous Catalysis with Surface-Exposed Stable Metal Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Surface and interface designs are an efficient strategy to fabricate innovative and advanced catalysts. A prerequisite for this is a fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relations of catalyst nanoparticles, which, however, remains a formidable challenge due to the complexity of heterogeneous catalysis. Recent progresses in catalytic nanocrystals with uniform and well-defined structures, in situ characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations have offered opportunities for the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis, and the achieved outputs are turning the innovation of efficient catalysts via surface and interface designs into a reality. Herein, the recent advances in the fundamental-understanding-directed rational surface and interface designs for heterogeneous catalysis, including crystal phase design, morphology/facet design, and size design, are presented. Perspectives are also discussed for the innovation of efficient catalysts via the fundamental-understanding-directed surface and interface designs followed by controlled synthesis.
New Perspectives for Evaluating the Mass Transport in Porous Catalysts and Unfolding Macro- and Microkinetics

Abstract:In this article we shed light on newly emerging perspectives to characterize and understand the interplay of diffusive mass transport and surface catalytic processes in pores of gas phase metal catalysts. As a case study, nanoporous gold, as an interesting example exhibiting a well-defined pore structure and a high activity for total and partial oxidation reactions is considered. PFG NMR (pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance) measurements allowed here for a quantitative evaluation of gas diffusivities within the material. STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy) tomography furthermore provided additional insight into the structural details of the pore system, helping to judge which of its features are most decisive for slowing down mass transport. Based on the quantitative knowledge about the diffusion coefficients inside a porous catalyst, it becomes possible to disentangle mass transport contributions form the measured reaction kinetics and to determine the kinetic rate constant of the underlying catalytic surface reaction. In addition, predictions can be made for an improved effectiveness of the catalyst, i.e., optimized conversion rates. This approach will be discussed at the example of low-temperature CO oxidation, efficiently catalysed by npAu at 30 °C. The case study shall reveal that novel porous materials exhibiting well-defined micro- and mesoscopic features and sufficient catalytic activity, in combination with modern techniques to evaluate diffusive transport, offer interesting new opportunities for an integral understanding of catalytic processes.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials of diverse architecture are ubiquitous in industrial catalysis. They offer exciting prospects to tackle various sustainability challenges faced by society. Since the introduction of the concept a century ago, researchers aspire to control the chemical identity, local environment and electronic properties of active sites on catalytic surfaces to optimize their reactivity in given applications. Nowadays, numerous strategies exist to tailor these characteristics with varying levels of atomic precision. Making headway relies upon the existence of analytical approaches able to resolve relevant structural features and remains challenging due to the inherent complexity even of the simplest heterogeneous catalysts, and to dynamic effects often occurring under reaction conditions. Computational methods play a complementary and ever-increasing role in pushing forward the design. Here, we examine how nanoscale engineering can enhance the selectivity and stability of catalysts. We highlight breakthroughs towards their commercialization and identify directions to guide future research and innovation.

Abstract:Defects that commonly exist on the surface of zeolites pose notable mass transport constraints and influence the catalytic performance. The mechanism underlying the surface defects inducing molecular transport limitations, however, is not fully understood. Herein, we use versatile spectroscopy, imaging techniques, and multiscale simulations to investigate the effect of surface defects on the molecular surface transport in zeolites, intending to establish the terminal structure–mass transport–performance relationship. Isolated silanol, which represents the foremost and eventual chemical defective accessible site at zeolite termination for guest molecules from the bulk fluid phase into zeolites or vice versa, is taken as a showcase. We demonstrate that isolated silanol at H-SAPO-34 zeolite termination not only enhances the adsorptive interaction between the polar molecules/alkenes and interface but also narrows the local 8-membered-ring pore at the external surface. The exterior surface with more isolated silanol could cause a higher diffusion barrier and hamper the accessibility of intracrystalline active sites. This work is expected to shed light on the mechanism underlying the zeolite catalyst upgrading via terminal surface modifications at zeolites.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has driven scientific advances in catalytic materials and processes over the past few decades. Unique physicochemical and electronic properties that emerge when materials are engineered from the bulk to the nanoscale have been exploited for a wide range of applications, including environmental remediation such as catalytic pollutant destruction. Recent advances in the catalytic synthesis of fuels and value-added chemicals explore the properties of materials, noble and transition metal catalysts in particular, when they are engineered to be below nanoscale and at the single-atom limit. In addition to the maximized efficiency of atomic utilization due to size reduction, significantly reduced costs and the potential to achieve highly selective catalysis are particularly appealing to the environmental application of single-atom catalysts, overcoming certain limitations that the field has been unable to address with nanotechnology. This critical review, built upon a comprehensive discussion of fundamental properties, synthesis methods, and application examples, evaluates in depth the opportunities and challenges of single-atom catalysts as new frontier materials for environmental remediation applications beyond nanomaterials.

Abstract:Surface and interfacial catalysis plays a vital role in chemical industries, electrochemistry and photochemical reactions. The challenges of modern chemistry are to optimize the chemical reaction processes and understand the detailed mechanism of chemical reactions. Since the early 1960s, the foundation of surface science systems has allowed the study of surface and interfacial phenomena on atomic/molecular level, and thus brought a number of significant developments to fundamental and technological processes, such as catalysis, material science and biochemistry, just to name a few. This themed issue describes the recent advances and developments in the fundamental understanding of surface and interfacial catalysis, encompassing areas of knowledge from metal to metal oxide, carbide, graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, as well as under realistic reaction conditions.

Abstract:The interface, referred to as the boundary between two phases, has been demonstrated to play a critical role in catalysis. Fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena occurring in catalysis will favor the rational design of high-performance catalysts. With the thriving of nanoscience, the nanointerface has also received tremendous attention in nanocatalysis. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the delicate design and the fine control of various complex nanomaterials with well-defined interfaces based on progress in nano-synthetic methodologies, including metal-metal oxide, metal-metal, metal-non-oxide and metal in confined spaces. Then the challenging issues in the synthetic control of a nanointerface, based on the authors' experiences, are discussed. Finally, the prospects and outlooks for engineering nanointerfaces for nanocatalysis towards renewable energy are presented.
Enhancement of Catalytic Properties by Adjusting Molecular Diffusion in Nanoporous Catalysts

Abstract:The nanoporous catalysts with advantages of high surface areas and abundant nanoporosity have been widely used in heterogeneous catalytic processes, but their catalytic performances are generally lower than those of the corresponding homogeneous catalysts due to distinguishable exposed active sites and molecular diffusion. Recent results show that molecular diffusion strongly influences catalytic performances. Therefore, adjusting the molecular diffusion in the nanoporous catalysts is an efficient route for catalytic enhancement of heterogeneous catalysts. In this chapter, recent developments are briefly summarized on rational adjustment of molecular diffusion in the heterogeneous nanoporous catalysts, including the use of hierarchical zeolites for fast mass transfer, active sites such as metal and metal oxide nanoparticles fixed inside nanoporous crystals such as zeolites and MOFs for shape-selective diffusion, and employment of nanoporous polymer-based catalysts for controlling the catalyst wettability, where the relationship between molecular diffusion and catalytic properties is particularly emphasized. Finally, the perspectives and challenges for the adjustment of molecular diffusion in the heterogeneous catalysts such as sustainable preparation of hierarchical zeolites and introduction of functionalized groups in the nanoporous catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Catalysis, as a key and enabling technology, plays an increasingly important role in fields ranging from energy, environment and agriculture to health care. Rational design and synthesis of highly efficient catalysts has become the ultimate goal of catalysis research. Thanks to the rapid development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and in particular a theoretical understanding of the tuning of electronic structure in nanoscale systems, this element of design is becoming possible via precise control of nanoparticles’ composition, morphology, structure and electronic states. At the same time, it is important to develop tools for in situ characterization of nanocatalysts under realistic reaction conditions, and for monitoring the dynamics of catalysis with high spatial, temporal and energy resolution. In this review, we discuss confinement effects in nanocatalysis, a concept that our group has put forward and developed over several years. Taking the confined catalytic systems of carbon nanotubes, metal-confined nano-oxides and 2D layered nanocatalysts as examples, we summarize and analyze the fundamental concepts, the research methods and some of the key scientific issues involved in nanocatalysis. Moreover, we present a perspective on the challenges and opportunities in future research on nanocatalysis from the aspects of: (1) controlled synthesis of nanocatalysts and rational design of catalytically active centers; (2) in situ characterization of nanocatalysts and dynamics of catalytic processes; (3) computational chemistry with a complexity approximating that of experiments; and (4) scale-up and commercialization of nanocatalysts.

In situ study on molecular diffusion phenomena in nanoporous catalytic solids

Abstract:As an omnipresent phenomenon in nature, diffusion is among the rate-determining processes in many technological processes. This is in particular true for catalytic conversion in nanoporous materials. We provide a critical review of the possibilities of exploring diffusion phenomena over microscopic dimensions in such media by direct experimental observation. By monitoring the probability distribution of molecular displacements as a function of time, the pulsed field gradient technique of NMR (PFG NMR) records the rate of molecular re-distribution. By varying the observation time, PFG NMR is thus able to trace even hierarchies of transport resistances as occurring, e.g., in catalyst particles in the form of binder-compacted assemblages of zeolite crystallites. Alternatively, and complementary to this information, interference microscopy (IFM) and IR microscopy (IRM) are able to follow the evolution of intracrystalline concentration profiles during uptake and release. This allows, in particular, an accurate quantification of the transport resistances on the surface of the individual crystallites and of the probability that reactant molecules from the gas phase, upon colliding with the external surface, are able to penetrate through such "surface barriers" into the crystal bulk phase. Being able to distinguish between different molecular species, IRM is able to record the evolution of intracrystalline concentration profiles even during multi-component adsorption and catalytic reactions (169 references).

Abstract:Exciting new opportunities are emerging in the field of catalysis on the basis of the controlled integration of ultrafine metal nanoparticles (UMNPs) and high-surface-area materials, providing the ability to create advanced nanocatalysts to investigate and optimize a broad range of catalytic processes. The immobilization of UMNPs to high-surface-area materials with nanoporous or two-dimensional nanolayer structures provides great advantages for catalytic applications in terms of controlling the nucleation and growth of UMNPs with a clean surface, protecting them from aggregation and harvesting the synergistic effects between the UMNPs and the supports. This review summarizes recent progress in the field of immobilized UMNPs by focusing on their preparation and catalytic applications.

Abstract:The last decade has seen rapid expansion and development in the field of density functional theory (DFT) simulation on the complex chemical processes that occur at surfaces and interfaces. The understanding of the phenomena in surface science and heterogeneous catalysis has benefited tremendously from these quantum mechanic calculations. This article reviews current progress in the theory of reactions on surfaces, in particular, those relevant to the barrier and the active site of surface reactions. Two representative reactions, namely, NO dissociation and CO oxidation, are selected to illustrate how these theoretical concepts are applied to understand catalytic reactions. Here, the pathways and energetics of these reactions under various catalytic conditions are described in detail, and the understanding of the reactions is generalized. It is concluded that DFT-based methods can be well applied to catalysis to understand the electronic structure of chemical processes and to elucidate mechanisms of complex surface reactions.

Abstract:Growth of nanostructures and nanopillars is considered in a model of deposition of atoms diffusing from solution to the forming surface structure. Surface restructuring is accounted for, yielding morphologies of interest in catalysis. Kinetic Monte Carlo approach is utilized to explore the emergence of face-centered cubic-symmetry surface features in Pt-type metal nanostructures. Results exemplify evaluation of the fraction of the active sites with desirable properties for catalysis, suggesting optimal growth regimes.

Confined Catalysis Under Two-Dimensional Materials

Abstract:Confined microenvironments formed in heterogeneous catalysts have recently been recognized as equally important as catalytically active sites. Understanding the fundamentals of confined catalysis has become an important topic in heterogeneous catalysis. Well-defined 2D space between a catalyst surface and a 2D material overlayer provides an ideal microenvironment to explore the confined catalysis experimentally and theoretically. Using density functional theory calculations, we reveal that adsorption of atoms and molecules on a Pt(111) surface always has been weakened under monolayer graphene, which is attributed to the geometric constraint and confinement field in the 2D space between the graphene overlayer and the Pt(111) surface. A similar result has been found on Pt(110) and Pt(100) surfaces covered with graphene. The microenvironment created by coating a catalyst surface with 2D material overlayer can be used to modulate surface reactivity, which has been illustrated by optimizing oxygen reduction reaction activity on Pt(111) covered by various 2D materials. We demonstrate a concept of confined catalysis under 2D cover based on a weak van der Waals interaction between 2D material overlayers and underlying catalyst surfaces.

Abstract:Gas-liquid-solid catalytic reactions are widespread in nature and man-made technologies. Recently, the exceptional reactivity observed on (electro)sprayed microdroplets, in comparison to bulk gas-liquid systems, has attracted the attention of researchers. In this perspective, we compile possible strategies to engineer catalytically active gas-liquid-(solid) interfaces based on membrane contactors, microdroplets, micromarbles, microbubbles, and microfoams to produce commodity chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and formic acid. In particular, particle-stabilized microfoams, with superior upscaling capacity, emerge as a promising and versatile platform to conceive high-performing (catalytic) gas-liquid-(solid) nanoreactors. Gas-liquid-(solid) nanoreactors could circumvent current limitations of state-of-the-art multiphase reactors (e.g., stirred tanks, trickle beds, and bubble columns) suffering from poor gas solubility and mass transfer resistances and access gas-liquid-(solid) reactors with lower cost and carbon footprint.
