Abstract:We present a linear stability analysis of stationary states (or fixed points) in large dynamical systems defined on random directed graphs with a prescribed distribution of indegrees and outdegrees. We obtain two remarkable results for such dynamical systems: First, infinitely large systems on directed graphs can be stable even when the degree distribution has unbounded support; this result is surprising since their counterparts on nondirected graphs are unstable when system size is large enough. Second, we show that the phase transition between the stable and unstable phase is universal in the sense that it depends only on a few parameters, such as, the mean degree and a degree correlation coefficient. In addition, in the unstable regime we characterize the nature of the destabilizing mode, which also exhibits universal features. These results follow from an exact theory for the leading eigenvalue of infinitely large graphs that are locally tree-like and oriented, as well as, for the right and left eigenvectors associated with the leading eigenvalue. We corroborate analytical results for infinitely large graphs with numerical experiments on random graphs of finite size. We discuss how the presented theory can be extended to graphs with diagonal disorder and to graphs that contain nondirected links. Finally, we discuss the influence of small cycles and how they can destabilize large dynamical systems when they induce strong enough feedback loops.

Non-hyperbolicity at large scales of a high-dimensional chaotic system

Abstract:The dynamics of many important high-dimensional dynamical systems are both chaotic and complex, meaning that strong reducing hypotheses are required to understand the dynamics. The highly influential chaotic hypothesis of Gallavotti and Cohen states that the large-scale dynamics of high-dimensional systems are effectively uniformly hyperbolic, which implies many felicitous statistical properties. We obtain direct and reliable numerical evidence, contrary to the chaotic hypothesis, of the existence of non-hyperbolic large-scale dynamical structures in a mean-field coupled system. To do this we reduce the system to its thermodynamic limit, which we approximate numerically with a Chebyshev basis transfer operator discretisation. This enables us to obtain a high precision estimate of a homoclinic tangency, implying a failure of uniform hyperbolicity. Robust non-hyperbolic behaviour is expected under perturbation. As a result, the chaotic hypothesis should not be {\it a priori} assumed to hold in all systems, and a better understanding of the domain of its validity is required.

Abstract:After a 3D Lorenz-like system has been revisited, more rich hidden dynamics that was not found previously is clearly revealed. Some more precise mathematical work, such as for the complete distribution and the local stability and bifurcation of its equilibrium points, the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles as well as homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, and the dynamics at infinity, is carried out in this paper. In particular, another possible new mechanism behind the creation of chaotic attractors is presented. Based on this mechanism, some different structure types of chaotic attractors are numerically found in the case of small b > 0. All theoretical results obtained are further illustrated by numerical simulations. What we formulate in this paper is to not only show those dynamical properties hiding in this system, but also (more mainly) present a kind of way and means - both "locally" and "globally" and both "finitely" and "infinitely" - to comprehensively explore a given system.

Abstract:We study general random dynamical systems of continuous maps on some compact metric space. Assuming a local contraction condition and uniqueness of the stationary measure, we establish probabilistic limit laws such as the central limit theorem, the strong law of large numbers, and the law of the iterated logarithm. Moreover, we study exponential synchronization and synchronization on average. In the particular case of iterated function systems on $\mathbb S^1$, we analyze synchronization rates and describe their large deviations. In the case of $C^{1+\beta}$-diffeomorphisms, these deviations on random orbits are obtained from the large deviations of the expected Lyapunov exponent.

However, this general conclusion is not always supported by empirical observation: from cells to biomes, biological systems are large, complex and, often, stable. In this paper, we revisit May's argument in light of recent developments in both ecology and random matrix theory. Using a non-linear generalization of the competitive Lotka-Volterra model, we show that there are, in fact, two kinds of complexity-stability relationships in disordered dynamical systems: if self-interactions grow faster with density than cross-interactions, complexity is destabilizing; but if cross-interactions grow faster than self-interactions, complexity is stabilizing.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider random dynamical systems formed by concatenating maps acting on the unit interval in an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) fashion. Considered as a stationary Markov process, the random dynamical system possesses a unique stationary measure . We consider a class of non-square-integrable observables , mostly of form , where is a non-recurrent point (in particular a non-periodic point) satisfying some other genericity conditions and, more generally, regularly varying observables with index . The two types of maps we concatenate are a class of piecewise expanding maps and a class of intermittent maps possessing an indifferent fixed point at the origin. Under conditions on the dynamics and , we establish Poisson limit laws, convergence of scaled Birkhoff sums to a stable limit law, and functional stable limit laws in both the annealed and quenched case. The scaling constants for the limit laws for almost every quenched realization are the same as those of the annealed case and determined by . This is in contrast to the scalings in quenched central limit theorems where the centering constants depend in a critical way upon the realization and are not the same for almost every realization.

Abstract:In this paper, we first provide a criterion on uniform large deviation principles (ULDP) of stochastic differential equations under Lyapunov conditions on the coefficients, which can be applied to stochastic systems with coefficients of polynomial growth and possible degenerate driving noises. In the second part, using the ULDP criterion we preclude the concentration of limiting measures of invariant measures of stochastic dynamical systems on repellers and acyclic saddle chains and extend Freidlin and Wentzell's asymptotics theorem to stochastic systems with unbounded coefficients. Of particular interest, we determine the limiting measures of the invariant measures of the famous stochastic van der Pol equation and van der Pol Duffing equation whose noises are naturally degenerate. We also construct two examples to match the global phase portraits of Freidlin and Wentzell's unperturbed systems and to explicitly compute their transition difficulty matrices. Other applications include stochastic May-Leonard system and random systems with infinitely many equivalent classes.

Abstract:We study the long-time behaviour of large systems of ordinary differential equations with random data. Our main focus is a Hamiltonian system which describes a distinguished particle attached to a large collection of heat bath particles by springs. In the limit where the size of the heat bath tends to infinity, the trajectory of the distinguished particle can be weakly approximated, on finite time intervals, by a Langevin stochastic differential equation. We examine the long-term behaviour of these trajectories, both analytically and numerically. We find ergodic behaviour manifest in both the long-time empirical measures and in the resulting auto-correlation functions.

Persistence of steady-states for dynamical systems on large networks

Abstract:The goal of this work is to identify steady-state solutions to dynamical systems defined on large, random families of networks. We do so by passing to a continuum limit where the adjacency matrix is replaced by a non-local operator with kernel called a graphon. This graphon equation is often more amenable to analysis and provides a single equation to study instead of the infinitely many variations of networks that lead to the limit. Our work establishes a rigorous connection between steady-states of the continuum and network systems. Precisely, we show that if the graphon equation has a steady-state solution whose linearization is invertible, there exists related steady-state solutions to the finite-dimensional networked dynamical system over all sufficiently large graphs converging to the graphon. The proof involves setting up a Newton--Kantorovich type iteration scheme which is shown to be a contraction on a suitable metric space. Interestingly, we show that the first iterate of our defined operator in general fails to be a contraction mapping, but the second iterate is proven to contract on the space. We extend our results to show that linear stability properties further carry over from the graphon system to the graph dynamical system. Our results are applied to twisted states in a Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators, steady-states in a model of neuronal network activity, and a Lotka--Volterra model of ecological interaction.

Abstract:When being constructed, complex dynamical networks can lose stability in the sense of Lyapunov (i. s. L.) due to positive feedback. Thus, there is much important worthiness in the theory and applications of complex dynamical networks to study the stability. In this paper, according to dissipative system criteria, we give the stability condition in general complex dynamical networks, especially, in NW small-world and BA scale-free networks. The results of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that the stability i. s. L. depends on the maximal connectivity of the network. Finally, we show a numerical example to verify our theoretical results.
Stability of large complex systems with heterogeneous relaxation dynamics

Abstract:We study the probability of stability of a large complex system of size $N$ within the framework of a generalized May model, which assumes a linear dynamics of each population size $n_i$ (with respect to its equilibrium value): $ \frac{\mathrm{d}\, n_i}{\mathrm{d}t} = - a_i n_i - \sqrt{T} \sum_{j} J_{ij} n_j $. The $a_i>0$'s are the intrinsic decay rates, $J_{ij}$ is a real symmetric $(N\times N)$ Gaussian random matrix and $\sqrt{T}$ measures the strength of pairwise interaction between different species. Unlike in May's original homogeneous model, each species has now an intrinsic damping $a_i$ that may differ from one another. As the interaction strength $T$ increases, the system undergoes a phase transition from a stable phase to an unstable phase at a critical value $T=T_c$. We reinterpret the probability of stability in terms of the hitting time of the level $b=0$ of an associated Dyson Brownian Motion (DBM), starting at the initial position $a_i$ and evolving in `time' $T$. In the large $N \to \infty$ limit, using this DBM picture, we are able to completely characterize $T_c$ for arbitrary density $\mu(a)$ of the $a_i$'s. For a specific flat configuration $a_i = 1 + \sigma \frac{i-1}{N}$, we obtain an explicit parametric solution for the limiting (as $N\to \infty$) spectral density for arbitrary $T$ and $\sigma$. For finite but large $N$, we also compute the large deviation properties of the probability of stability on the stable side $T < T_c$ using a Coulomb gas representation.

Abstract:We analyse the stability of linear dynamical systems defined on sparse, random graphs with predator-prey, competitive, and mutualistic interactions. These systems are aimed at modelling the stability of fixed points in large systems defined on complex networks, such as, ecosystems consisting of a large number of species that interact through a food-web. We develop an exact theory for the spectral distribution and the leading eigenvalue of the corresponding sparse Jacobian matrices. This theory reveals that the nature of local interactions have a strong influence on system's stability. We show that, in general, linear dynamical systems defined on random graphs with a prescribed degree distribution of unbounded support are unstable if they are large enough, implying a tradeoff between stability and diversity. Remarkably, in contrast to the generic case, antagonistic systems that only contain interactions of the predator-prey type can be stable in the infinite size limit. This qualitatively feature for antagonistic systems is accompanied by a peculiar oscillatory behaviour of the dynamical response of the system after a perturbation, when the mean degree of the graph is small enough. Moreover, for antagonistic systems we also find that there exist a dynamical phase transition and critical mean degree above which the response becomes non-oscillatory.

Abstract:Significance This paper sheds light on the phase portrait structure of a “minimal model” for a large nonlinear system of many randomly interacting degrees of freedom equipped with a stability feedback mechanism. In this way, it significantly extends local stability analysis of large complex systems, which was undertaken by Robert May in 1972. We show that the transition from stability to instability is characterized by the exponential explosion in the number of unstable equilibria, with drastically reduced probability of finding truly locally attracting equilibria. At the same time, we demonstrate abundance of equilibria with a large proportion of stable directions, which arguably can slow down the system dynamics for sufficiently long time and induce aging effects.

Abstract:A persistent dynamical system in $\mathbb{R}^d_{> 0}$ is one whose solutions have positive lower bounds for large $t$, while a permanent dynamical system in $\mathbb{R}^d_{> 0}$ is one whose solutions have uniform upper and lower bounds for large $t$. These properties have important applications for the study of mathematical models in biochemistry, cell biology, and ecology. Inspired by reaction network theory, we define a class of polynomial dynamical systems called tropically endotactic. We show that two-dimensional tropically endotactic polynomial dynamical systems are permanent, regardless of the values of (possibly time-dependent) parameters in these systems. These results generalize the permanence of two-dimensional reversible, weakly reversible, and endotactic mass action systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the transverse stability of random dynamical systems (RDS). Suppose a RDS on a Riemann manifold possesses a non-random invariant submanifold, what conditions can guarantee that a random attractor of the RDS restrained on the invariant submanifold is a random attractor with respect to the whole manifold? By the linearization technique, we prove that if all the normal Lyapunov exponents with respect to the tangent space of the submanifold are negative, then the attractor on the submanifold is also a random attractor of the whole manifold. This result extends the idea of the transverse stability analysis of deterministic dynamical systems in [1, 3]. As an explicit example, we discuss the complete synchronization in network of coupled maps with both stochastic topologies and maps, which extends the well-known master stability function (MSF) approach for deterministic cases to stochastic cases.
