Abstract:Over the last decade, there has been a remarkable surge in the development of graphene-based energy generation, storage, transduction, and harvesting devices, driven by the exceptional electronic, optical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of graphene. Notably, the tunable wettability of graphene offers an intriguing opportunity to enhance the performance of energy systems that utilize or involve water during device fabrication and usage stages, such as solar cells, nanogenerators, and supercapacitors. In this review, we provide an extensive overview of the latest research progress in the intrinsic wettability of graphene and its influencing factors, including substrate, contamination, defects, doping, and layer number. Subsequently, we highlight the representative applications in water-involved energy fields of high-quality graphene films synthesized via chemical vapor deposition. Lastly, we discuss current challenges in adopting graphene in the energy fields and propose future directions to promote the adoption of graphene in water-involved energy devices. Overall, this review presents critical insights into the significance of graphene wettability in advancing both the fundamental research and practical applications of graphene in energy fields.

Abstract:In the present work, the wettability of defective graphene oxide (GO) film is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. A water droplet is deposited on the surface of a graphene oxide membrane, and the contact angle is measured by fitting the liquid-vapor interface. Although pristine graphene has few hydrophobic properties with a contact angle of 95 degrees, graphene oxide presents more hydrophilic properties, due to the stronger hydrogen bonds interactions at the interface. Moreover, the introduction of vacancy defects at the graphene oxide surface decreases the wettability of graphene oxide. We find that the contact angle of graphene oxide increases from 70 degrees to 82 degrees, with a defective concentration from 0% to 10%. Our results will help provide a new method for controlling the wetting properties of GO and its additional capabilities in device design for applications.

Abstract:Graphene has unique water wetting properties, which have drawn great research interests recently. On the other side, water condensation and evaporation is a natural phenomenon in our daily life. Here, by combining the wetting properties of graphene and water condensation, a facile optical visualization approach is developed for graphene on a variety of substrates simply with the assistance of water vapor. Monolayer graphene becomes optically visible in several seconds with bellowing of water vapor. The wetting properties of monolayer graphene‐covered surface and uncovered surface on various substrates, including copper, pristine silicon (Si), HF‐treated Si, SiO2/Si, quartz, glass, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and micropatterned PDMS, are studied. It is shown that graphene is visible when it is not fully transparent to wetting for the underlying substrates. The different wetting behavior of graphene‐covered and uncovered surface leads to the difference in the distribution and morphology of water droplets, also gives rise to the interesting confining wall effect of the graphene edge, contributing to the observation of graphene. Moreover, this approach also enables distinguishing the monolayer and nonmonolayer graphene. This simple but powerful method is green, convenient, and repeatable, promising its great potential applications for graphene or other 2D materials.

Abstract:We characterize the wetting properties of graphene oxide by performing classical molecular dynamics simulations. With oxygen-containing functional groups on the basal plane, graphene becomes hydrophilic and the water contact angle decreases with their concentration, c. The concentration dependence displays a transition at c ≈ 11% as defined by the interacting range of hydrogen bonds with oxidized groups and water. Patterns of the oxidized region and the morphological corrugation of the sheet strongly influence the spreading of water droplets with their lateral spans defined by corresponding geometrical parameters and thus can be used to control their behavior on the surface. These results are discussed with respect to relevant applications in graphene oxide-derived functional materials and offer a fundamental understanding of their wetting and flow phenomena.
Recent Developments in Superhydrophobic Graphene and Graphene-Related Materials: from Preparation to Potential Applications

Abstract:In the past decade, graphene has revealed a cornucopia of both fundamental science and potential applications due to its exceptional electrical, mechanical, thermal, and optical properties. Recently, increasing effort has been devoted to exploiting its new features, for example, wetting properties. Benefitting from its inherent material properties, graphene shows great potential for the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces, which could be potentially used for various anti-water applications. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in superhydrophobic graphene and graphene-related materials. Preparation strategies using pure graphene, graphene oxide, and graphene/polymer hybrids are presented and their potential applications are discussed. Finally, our own perspective of this dynamic field, including both current challenges and future demands, has been discussed. It is anticipated that the cooperation of the numerous merits of graphene and superhydrophobicity will lead to new opportunities for high-performance multifunctional devices.

Abstract:We report that graphene coatings do not significantly disrupt the intrinsic wetting behaviour of surfaces for which surface-water interactions are dominated by van der Waals forces. Our contact angle measurements indicate that a graphene monolayer is wetting-transparent to copper, gold or silicon, but not glass, for which the wettability is dominated by short-range chemical bonding. With increasing number of graphene layers, the contact angle of water on copper gradually transitions towards the bulk graphite value, which is reached for ~6 graphene layers. Molecular dynamics simulations and theoretical predictions confirm our measurements and indicate that graphene's wetting transparency is related to its extreme thinness. We also show a 30-40% increase in condensation heat transfer on copper, as a result of the ability of the graphene coating to suppress copper oxidation without disrupting the intrinsic wettability of the surface. Such an ability to independently tune the properties of surfaces without disrupting their wetting response could have important implications in the design of conducting, conformal and impermeable surface coatings.

Breakdown in the Wetting Transparency of Graphene

Abstract:We develop a theory to model the van der Waals interactions between liquid and graphene, including quantifying the wetting behavior of a graphene-coated surface. Molecular dynamics simulations and contact angle measurements were also carried out to test the theory. We show that graphene is only partially transparent to wetting and that the predicted highest attainable contact angle of water on a graphene-coated surface is 96°. Our findings reveal a more complex picture of wetting on graphene than what has been reported recently as complete "wetting transparency."

Abstract:In this work, an effective strategy for nanostructured surface wetting based on the external electric field and the graphene coating is proposed in the context of classic molecular dynamics models. For water-resistant nanogrooves, the wetting transition from the Cassie-Baxter (CB) to the Wenzel (WZ) state is generated in the presence of the monolayer graphene coating under an external electric field of about 0.07 V/Å. Moreover, due to the funnel-like structure, the electrowetting of double-trapezoid nanogrooves can be enhanced relative to that of single-trapezoid nanogrooves. Besides, the calculated profiles of dipole moments and 1D free-energy landscapes exhibit a remarkable reduction in the free energy barrier required for the wetting transition assisted by the electric field and the graphene coating. This study provides atomistic insights into the wetting behavior of nanostructures under a variety of conditions, which is of great help to manufacture micro/nanostructured surfaces.

Abstract:Graphene has to be supported on a substrate in a variety of applications. The underlying substrate can exert a remarkable impact on the wettability of graphene, but the inherent mechanism remains elusive. By quantifying the static contact angles of water (polar liquid) and diiodomethane (nonpolar liquid) droplets on graphene supported on different kinds of substrate, we found that the apparent wetting transparency of the supported graphene with airborne hydrocarbon adsorption depends essentially on polarities of both the liquids and the underlying substrates, and that, in most cases, the supported graphene exhibits wetting translucency. With the Owens-Wench theory, we then identified the specific components of the surface energy, which indicated that inserting graphene does not introduce a polar interaction and that the apparent transmitted polar energy of one layer of graphene is 20% for the investigated substrates. The apparent polarity of supported graphene can potentially be tuned by the underlying substrate. Practically, the wettability of graphene can be determined by investigating the competitive relationship between the reduced dispersive and polar interaction of the substrate and the increased dispersive one introduced via inserting the graphene layers. Our findings may have significant implications in designing functional nanostructures through tuning the surface properties of graphene by its surroundings.

Abstract:The dynamics of water near the nanoscale hydrophobic (graphite-CH3) and hydrophilic (graphite-COOH) plates has been studied in detail with molecular dynamics simulations in this paper. It is shown that these designed surfaces (by growing a layer of methyl or carboxyl groups on top of graphite) can have a significant impact on the neighboring water dynamics, with the hydrophilic carboxyl surface having even more profound effects. The water hydrogen bond lifetime is much longer near both types of surfaces than that in the bulk, while on the other hand the water diffusion constant is much smaller than that in the bulk. The difference in the diffusion constant can be as large as a factor of 8 and the difference in the hydrogen bond lifetime can be as large as a factor of 2, depending on the distance from the surface. Furthermore, the water molecules in the first solvation shell of surface atoms show a strong bias in hydroxyl group orientation near the surface, confirming some of the previous findings. Finally, the possible water dewetting transition between two graphite-CH3 plates and the effect of the strength of the solute-solvent attractions on the water drying transition are investigated. The relationship among the dewetting transition critical distance, van der Waals potential well depth, and water contact angle on the graphite-CH3 surface is also analyzed on the basis of a simple macroscopic theory, which can be used to predict the dewetting transition critical distance.

Abstract:The sensitivity of graphene to the surrounding environment is given by its {\pi} electrons, which are directly exposed to molecules in the ambient. The high sensitivity of graphene to the local environment has shown to be both advantageous but also problematic for graphene-based devices, such as transistors and sensors, where the graphene carrier concentration and mobility change due to ambient humidity variations. In this review, recent progress in understanding the effects of water on different types of graphene, grown epitaxially and quasi-free standing on SiC, by chemical vapour deposition on SiO2, as well as exfoliated flakes, are presented. It is demonstrated that water withdraws electrons from graphene, but the graphene-water interaction highly depends on the thickness, layer stacking, underlying substrate and substrate-induced doping. Moreover, we highlight the importance of clear and unambiguous description of the environmental conditions (i.e. relative humidity) whenever a routine characterisation for carrier concentration and mobility is reported (often presented as a simple figure-of-merit), as these electrical characteristics are highly dependent on the adsorbed molecules and the surrounding environment.

Abstract:Studies on the effect of wall textures and crystallographic grain orientations on graphene coatings and water droplets wettability are conducted. To date, there is almost no data on the effect of surface textures and high temperature annealing on the wettability of the graphene-coated copper. It is generally accepted that the water contact angle on the graphene-coated copper with one graphene layer is approximately 85-86°. However, changing the annealing duration, and using different surface textures, it is possible to change the graphene wettability over a wide range of static droplet contact angles from 81° to 96°, which allows providing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. With the growth of annealing duration, the average grain size increases from 0.1-1 mm to 10 mm and more. By changing the annealing duration and the surface roughness, it is possible to realize the grains orientation (001) and (111), as well as the simultaneous presence of different grains orientations. Molecular dynamic modeling of the influence of orientation and grain size on the wettability of the graphene coating is performed. The calculation results correspond to the experimental data on contact angles. The key factors affecting the wettability of graphene are presented and analyzed.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Metal-catalyzed chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of graphene is one of the most important techniques to produce high quality and large area graphene films. Apart from the outstanding electronic and optoelectronic properties of the metal-catalyzed CVD grown graphene, its wetting behavior also possesses great potential that can be exploited for various applications such as water harvesting, micro-nano fluidics, triboelectricity generation, electrowetting, oil-water separation, biomimetics, etc. In this review article, we discuss the most recent advancements in the wetting behavior based applications of the metal-catalyzed CVD grown graphene. The focus is mainly on the metal-catalyzed CVD grown graphene as it offers better control over the growth of graphene films as compared to other techniques. Moreover, only those wetting behavior based applications are discussed where liquid droplet motion and actuation, and its stable hydrophobic/superhydrophobic state on graphene's surface are exploited. The article starts with a brief introduction of graphene, its metal-catalyzed CVD growth, and surface energy. Thereafter, it is mainly divided into two sections, viz., (1) important concepts and results related to liquid wetting behavior on the surface of metal-catalyzed CVD grown graphene and (2) liquid droplet wetting behavior based applications such as omniphobic/hydrophobic/superhydrophobic 3D graphene foam based filters for oil-water-gas separation, biomimetic surfaces for anti-corrosion and droplet transfer applications, water harvesting and defogging, triboelectric nanogenerators, electrowetting-based liquid lenses, and electro-active flow control devices. Finally, conclusions and outlook of this emerging research field are presented. This article aims to provide up-to-date information about the rapidly emerging research area of wetting behavior based applications of metal-catalyzed CVD grown graphene.

Abstract:Graphene hydrophobic coatings paved the way towards a new generation of optoelectronic and fluidic devices. Nevertheless, such hydrophobic thin films rely only on graphene non-polar surface, rather than taking advantage of its surface roughness. Furthermore, graphene is typically not self-standing. Differently, carbon aerogels have high porosity, large effective surface area due to their surface roughness, and very low mass density, which make them a promising candidate as a super-hydrophobic material for novel technological applications. However, despite a few works reporting the general super-hydrophobic and lipophilic behavior of the carbon aerogels, a detailed characterization of their wetting properties is still missing, to date. Here, the wetting properties of graphene aerogels are demonstrated in detail. Without any chemical functionalization or patterning of their surface, the samples exhibit a super-lipophilic state and a stationary super-hydrophobic state with a contact angle up to $150\pm15^{\deg}$ and low contact angle hysteresis $\approx15^{\deg}$, owing to the fakir effect. In addition, the adhesion force of the graphene aerogels in contact with the water droplets and their surface tension are evaluated. For instance, the unique wettability and enhanced liquid absorption of the graphene aerogels can be exploited for reducing contamination from oil spills and chemical leakage accidents.

Abstract:Controlling the wettability of graphene and its derivatives is critical for broader applications. However, the dynamic dewetting performance of graphene is usually overlooked. Currently, superhydrophobic graphene with an anisotropic wettability is rare. Inspired by natural reed leaves, we report an ingenious fabrication process combining photolithography and laser holography technologies to create biomimetic graphene surfaces that demonstrate anisotropic wettability along two directions of grooved hierarchical structures, which are similar to reed leaf veins. Microgrooved structures with a period of 200 mu m were fabricated via photolithography to endow the substrate with an obvious anisotropic wettability. Two-beam laser interference treatments of the graphene oxide (GO) film on the grooved substrate removed most of the hydrophilic oxygen-containing groups on the GO sheets and increased the surface roughness by introducing additional hierarchical micro-nanostructures. The combined effects endowed the resultant graphene films with a unique anisotropic superhydrophobicity similar to that of reed leaves. Superhydrophobic graphene surfaces with anisotropic antiwetting behavior might allow further innovations based on graphene in the fields of bionics and electronics.
A multifunctional graphene composite coating with switchable wettability

Abstract:<p>Although many encouraging advances have been made, the further development of the switchable wettability surfaces has been limited by complex preparation process, limited substrate materials, and inconvenient switching wettability methods. Herein, a multifunctional graphene composite coating (MGCC) with switchable wettability was fabricated by simple methods. Attributed to the special properties of nano-TiO<sub>2</sub> and graphene, the MGCC can achieve reversible wettability transformation under UV or IR irradiation. The unique wettability and good adhesion make MGCC show potential advantages in many fields. First, spraying MGCC on metal foam or melamine sponge can achieve high-efficiency separation of oil-water layered mixtures (> 97.4%) or emulsions (> 99.1%). Secondly, due to the light-controlled switchable wettability, MGCC platform can obtain different wettability regions by mask method to manipulate droplets or fluids. Different wetting models (Cassie state, Cassie impregnation wetting state, and Wenzel state) could be realized on the same MGCC surface. Thirdly, MGCC can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of metal surface, providing a new solution for corrosion protection. More specifically, the corrosion inhibition efficiency was 99.996%. Finally, MGCC has good anti-icing and active deicing abilities, which are attributed to the superhydrophobicity and excellent photothermal properties of graphene. In particular, ice adhesion strength (IAS) of MGCC surface was only 117 ± 15 kPa, and the ice shear strength (ISS) was only 183 ± 18 kPa. This study provides a new idea for designing a simple, multifunctional, and switchable wettability coating, which is expected to promote the large-scale preparation and application of functional integrated smart surface.</p>

Abstract:Many naturally occurring surfaces have superhydrophobicity that fulfils their functional demands, which has inspired considerable interest to develop similar artificial superhydrophobic surfaces with a variety of functionalities. Graphene is an ideal candidate for functional superhydrophobic surfaces due to its exceptional physicochemical properties. The recent advances in this emerging field are summarized, including the wetting behavior of water on graphene and the formation of crumpling/nanoparticle/foam-induced hierarchical structures, with emphasis on fundamental understanding for related processes. The potential applications in energy, environmental remediation, and thermal management are also discussed.
