Abstract:Graphene, as the fundamental 2D carbon structure with exceptionally high crystal and electronic quality, has emerged as a rapidly rising star in the field of material science. Its sudden discovery in 2004 led to an explosion of interest in the study of graphene with respect to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, opening up a new research area for materials science and condensed-matter physics, and aiming for wide-ranging and diversified technological applications. In this critical review, we will describe recent advances in the development of graphene-based materials from the standpoint of electrochemistry. To begin with, electron transfer properties of graphene will be discussed, involving its unusual electronic structure, extraordinary electronic properties and fascinating electron transport. The next major section deals with the exciting progress related to graphene-based materials in electrochemistry since 2004, including electrochemical sensing, electrochemiluminescence, electrocatalysis, electrochemical energy conversion and FET devices. Finally, prospects and further developments in this exciting field of graphene-based materials are also suggested (224 references).
Three dimensional graphene based materials: Synthesis and applications from energy storage and conversion to electrochemical sensor and environmental remediation

Abstract:With superior electrical/thermal conductivities and mechanical properties, two dimensional (2D) graphene has become one of the most intensively explored carbon allotropes in materials science. To exploit the inherent properties fully, 2D graphene sheets are often fabricated or assembled into functional architectures (e.g. hydrogels, aerogels) with desired three dimensional (3D) interconnected porous microstructures. The 3D graphene based materials show many excellent characteristics including increased active material per projected area, accessible mass transport or storage, electro/thermo conductivity, chemical/electrochemical stability and flexibility. It has paved the way for practical requirements in electronics, adsorption as well as catalysis related system. This review shows an extensive overview of the main principles and the recent synthetic technologies about fabricating various innovative 3D graphene based materials. Subsequently, recent progresses in electrochemical energy devices (lithium/lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and solar cells) and hydrogen energy generation/storage are explicitly discussed. The up to date advances for pollutants detection and environmental remediation are also reviewed. Finally, challenges and outlooks in materials development for energy and environment are suggested.

Abstract:Lightweight, flexible electrodes based on three-dimensional (3D) graphene have received increasing attention because of their application potential in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Integrating 3D graphene networks with other active components endows electrodes with large capacity/capacitance, high energy and power densities, and ultrastable cycling at high rates. This review highlights the fabrication techniques for self-supported 3D porous graphene structures and their integrated electrodes with metal oxides/hydroxides for battery, supercapacitor, and oxygen reduction reaction applications. Merits and demerits of different preparation methods and the associated electrochemical properties are presented. General advantages of graphene-based integrated electrodes are discussed.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous networks of planar 2D graphene have attractive features with respect to sensing. These include a large electroactive surface area, good inner and outer surface contact with the analyte, ease of loading with (bio)catalysts, and good electrochemical sensitivity. 3D free-standing graphene can even be used directly as an electrode. This review (with 140 refs.) covers the progress made in the past years. Following an introduction into the field (including definitions), a large section is presented that covers methods for the synthesis of 3D graphene (3DG) (including chemical vapor deposition, hydrothermal methods, lithography, support assisted synthesis and chemical deposition, and direct electrochemical methods). The next section covers the key features of 3DG and its composites for use in electrochemical sensors. This section is subdivided into sections on the uses of 3D porous graphene, 3DG composites with metals and metal oxides, composites consisting of 3DG and organic polymers, and electrodes modified with 3DG, 3DGs decorated with carbon nanotubes, and others. Abstract:The demand for high performance electrochemical energy storage devices has significantly increased in recent years and many efforts have been made to develop advanced electrode materials. In this respect, graphene-based materials, considered promising high performance electrode materials, have drawn great attention because they can increase the performance of the currently-used devices, such as the Lithium-ion battery and supercapacitor, and make next generation devices, such as the Lithium–sulfur battery, Lithium–O2 battery and Sodium-ion battery, more practical. This review summarizes the current uses of graphene-based materials in these devices and demonstrates their advances. It also discusses the opportunities for graphene in high performance electrode material preparation and device configuration, and more importantly, the challenges of graphene for practical use in these devices. Finally, perspectives and possible breakthroughs for future graphene-based materials are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a type of porous material with high surface area, have gained widespread attention as good precursors or templates for the derivation of metal oxides and composites. By combining MOFs with graphene, which possesses high conductivity and a large specific surface area, the next generation of electrochemical energy storage applications will realize new breakthroughs. In this review, we summarize a wide range of applications for MOF–graphene composite materials in lithium-ion batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, and supercapacitors. Finally, based on the scientific knowledge and experimental evidence reported in the existing literature, some breakthrough directions for MOF–graphene composite materials have been proposed. Our goal is to help researchers in this area gain a comprehensive understanding of the application of MOF–graphene composite materials in electrochemistry so that they can improve the performance of the material.

Abstract:Single-layer graphene has received much attention because of its unique two-dimensional crystal structure and properties. In this review, we focus on the graphene devices in solution, and their properties that are relevant to chemical and biological applications. We will discuss their charge transport, controlled by electrochemical gates, interfacial and quantum capacitance, charged impurities, and surface potential distribution. The sensitive dependence of graphene charge transport on the surrounding environment points to their potential applications as ultrasensitive chemical sensors and biosensors. The interfacial and quantum capacitance studies are directly relevant to the on-going effort of creating graphene-based ultracapacitors for energy storage.

Abstract:Graphene is a special allotrope of carbon with two-dimensional monolayered sheet network of sp2 hybridized carbon. It possesses novel electronic, mechanical and conducting properties and these properties could be exploited in the field of scientific community in nanotechnology. Numbers of methods have been developed for the production of graphene such as micromechanical exfoliation, chemical vapor deposition, epitaxial growth, arc discharge method, intercalation methods in graphite, unzipping of CNTs, electrochemical and chemical methods. Graphene and graphene based composite materials are highly versatile materials and find wide applications in numerous fields of research. In this review, we discussed about different kind of graphene based electrode materials, which were applied in energy storage devices (supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells and solar cells), electrochemical sensors, biosensors and pesticide sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Graphene has a unique atom-thick two-dimensional structure and excellent properties, including high conductiv-ity and electron mobility at room temperature, large specific surface area, and excellent mechanical properties. Graphene also possesses a variety of promising electrochemical properties, such as a wide potential window, low charge-transfer resistance, high electrocatalytic activity and fast electron transfer rate. Furthermore, chemically modified graphene materials, particu-larly graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), can be produced in a large scale and at low costs. They have good processability and can be assembled, blended or fabricated into macroscopic electrode materials with controlled compo-sitions and microstructures. Thus, graphene and its chemically modified derivatives are unique and attractive electrode materials for electrochemical biosensing. For example, GO is a chemically modified graphene and an important precursor of graphene. GO sheets have a large amount of carboxyl groups at their edges, which can be used to covalently immobilize en-zymes, realizing the detection of biomolecules. GO can also enhance the direct charge transfer of protein because of its irre-versible adsorption to protein and abundant catalytic sites. However, the oxygen functional groups of GO heavily destroy the conjugated planes of graphene sheets, decreasing the electrical property and limiting the practical applications of GO. Chemical, electrochemical, or thermal reduction can partly restore the conjugated structure, converting GO to conductive rGO. On the other hand, graphene is a material with zero band gap. Doping graphene with heteroatoms can modulate its band gap and improve its electrocatalytic properties. Graphene materials also frequently have to be blended with other functional materials to improve their dispersibility and processibility, enhance their electrochemical activity and/or selectivity. This review will summarize the recent research achievements in electrochemical biosensing based on the electrodes modified with pristine graphene ( e.g . GO, rGO, and doped graphene) or graphene composites with biomolecules, polymers, ionic liquids, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. A perspective of developments in this research field is also provided.

Abstract:Due to their unique properties, together with their ease of synthesis and functionalization, graphene-based materials have been showing great potential in energy storage and conversion. These hybrid structures display excellent material characteristics, including high carrier mobility, faster recombination rate and long-time stability. In this review, after a short introduction to graphene and its derivatives, we summarize the recent advances in the synthesis and applications of graphene and its derivatives in the fields of energy storage (lithium ion, lithium-air, lithium-sulphur batteries and supercapacitors) and conversion (oxygen reduction reaction for fuel cells). This article further highlights the working principles and problems hindering the practical applications of graphene-based materials in lithium batteries, supercapacitors and fuel cells. Future research trends towards new methodologies to the design and the synthesis of graphene-based nanocomposite with unique architectures for electrochemical energy storage and conversion are also proposed.

By combining the merits of 3D graphene (3DG), e.g., a porous and interconnected network, a high electrical conductivity, a large accessible surface area, and excellent mechanical strength and thermal stability, with the high chemical/electrochemical activities of active materials, 3DG-based composites show great promise as high-performance electrode materials in various energy devices. This article reviews recent progress in 3DG-based composites and their applications in energy storage/conversion devices, i.e., supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, dye-sensitized solar cells, and fuel cells.

Abstract:Graphene is a two dimensional (2D) planar and hexagonal array of carbon atoms and has been studied extensively as advanced nanomaterials for important technological applications. This review summarizes the recent developments in chemistry, materials and energy applications of graphene, doped graphene and their composites with nanoparticles (NPs). It first highlights the new chemistry used to synthesize high quality graphene. It then outlines the methodologies developed to dope graphene with heteroatoms to modify and control graphene properties. It further describes the general approaches to graphene–NP composites via either direct NP growth onto graphene or self-assembly of the pre-formed NPs on graphene surface. These graphene–NP composites provide some ideal systems for studying synergistic effects between graphene and NPs on catalysis. The review focuses on applications of graphene–NP composites in increasing electrochemical energy storage density and in catalyzing chemical reactions with much desired electrochemical efficiencies.

Abstract:Graphene and graphene-like carbons (G-carbons) have many excellent properties, such as a high specific surface area, and good electrical and thermal conductivities. Recent advances in the synthesis of large amounts of G-carbons from biomass are discussed, including the types of biomass materials used as the precursors and the various synthesis routes. The latter include high-temperature graphitization, growth on substrates, template-assisted synthesis, template-free catalysis, a g-C3N4-derived approach, plasma-assisted synthesis, and laser-induced synthesis. The uses of G-carbons in electrochemical energy storage and conversion, and sensing are also discussed.

Abstract:Graphene is very popular in recent years, due to its unique electrical, thermal, mechanical, optical and electrochemical properties. With these useful advantages, graphene has been used as a substance to incorporate various kinds of functional materials. Among them, graphene/conducting polymer composites have attracted a great deal of interest owing to their new properties or enhanced performance during the past few years, because conducting polymers have been widely used for electronic, optical and electrochemical applications thanks to their low cost, good environmental stability, interesting electroactivity, high pseudocapacitance and unusual doping/dedoping chemical characters. This review discusses the current development of graphene/conducting polymer composites. After introduction of the properties of graphene and conducting polymers. This review summarizes various methods to synthesize graphene/conducting polymer composites, as well as their enhanced properties. Finally, the applications of graphene/conducting polymer composites, such as supercapacitors, sensing platforms, fuel cells, solar cells, electrochromic devices, lithium ion batteries and so on, are also described.

Abstract:Energy storage devices are important components in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and the electrical distribution grid. Batteries and supercapacitors have achieved great success as the spearhead of electrochemical energy storage devices, but need to be further developed in order to meet the ever-increasing energy demands, especially attaining higher power and energy density, and longer cycling life. Rational design of electrode materials plays a critical role in developing energy storage systems with higher performance. Graphene, the well-known 2D allotrope of carbon, with a unique structure and excellent properties has been considered a "magic" material with its high energy storage capability, which can not only aid in addressing the issues of the state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, but also be crucial in the so-called post Li-ion battery era covering different technologies, e.g., sodium ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, structural batteries, and hybrid supercapacitors. In this feature article, we provide a comprehensive overview of the strategies developed in our research to create graphene-based composite electrodes with better ionic conductivity, electron mobility, specific surface area, mechanical properties, and device performance than state-of-the-art electrodes. We summarize the strategies of structure manipulation and surface modification with specific focus on tackling the existing challenges in electrodes for batteries and supercapacitors by exploiting the unique properties of graphene-related materials.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials are widely explored as the active electrode materials for energy storage and conversion devices, especially supercapacitors (SCs). Their high electrochemically active surface area, hierarchical porous structure, excellent compressibility, and high mechanical stability, as well as excellent conductivity, are the critical merits for providing robust and facilitative channels for charge transport. Various studies have explored many possible ways to utilize the maximum potential of graphene-based SC electrodes, and graphene research is booming, given its exceptional charge storage properties. This review focuses on the class-specific electrode materials for different types of SCs, followed by the classification and critical review of graphene-based electrodes reported in the past five years. The current challenges in the field have also been discussed with a focus on promising pathways for future research.

Abstract:In recent years, graphene-based magnetic composites have attracted tremendous research interest owing to its exceptional properties, such as huge surface area, large delocalized π-electron system, strong magnetic responsiveness, and excellent mechanical/thermal stability. These promising properties together with the ease of processibility and functionalization render graphene-based magnetic composites to be ideal adsorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction. In this review, we outline the state of the art on the preparation approaches for different graphene-based magnetic composites and its application as adsorbents in preconcentrating organic compounds, biological macromolecules, and metal ions. In addition, future research directions of this type of magnetic materials are identified as well.

Abstract:Three-dimensional graphene (3DG)/metal–organic framework (MOF)-based composites have attracted more and more attention in the field of energy due to their unique hierarchical porous structure and properties. The combination of graphene with MOFs can not only effectively overcome the limitations of poor electrical conductivity and low stability of MOFs, but also prevent the aggregation and reaccumulation between graphene sheets. Moreover, 3DG/MOF composites can also be used as multifunctional precursors with adjustable structures and composition of derivatives, thus expanding their applications in the field of electrochemistry. This feature article elaborates the latest synthesis methods of 3DG/MOF composites and their derivatives, along with their applications in batteries, supercapacitors (SCs) and electrocatalysis. In addition, the current challenges and future prospects of 3DG/MOF-based composites are discussed.

Abstract:Over the last decade, there has been a remarkable surge in the development of graphene-based energy generation, storage, transduction, and harvesting devices, driven by the exceptional electronic, optical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of graphene. Notably, the tunable wettability of graphene offers an intriguing opportunity to enhance the performance of energy systems that utilize or involve water during device fabrication and usage stages, such as solar cells, nanogenerators, and supercapacitors. In this review, we provide an extensive overview of the latest research progress in the intrinsic wettability of graphene and its influencing factors, including substrate, contamination, defects, doping, and layer number. Subsequently, we highlight the representative applications in water-involved energy fields of high-quality graphene films synthesized via chemical vapor deposition. Lastly, we discuss current challenges in adopting graphene in the energy fields and propose future directions to promote the adoption of graphene in water-involved energy devices. Overall, this review presents critical insights into the significance of graphene wettability in advancing both the fundamental research and practical applications of graphene in energy fields.
