Abstract:We predict the existence and study the basic properties of strongly asymmetric matter wave solitons that form at the interface produced by regions with different inter-atomic interaction strengths in pancake Bose-Einstein condensates. We address several types of surface solitons featuring topologically complex structures, including vortex and dipole-mode solitons. We found that the soliton become significantly asymmetric for high number of particles in the condensate. Yet, we reveal that under suitable conditions, that we elucidate, even such strongly asymmetric dipole and vortex solitons can be dynamically stable over wide regions of their existence domains.

Abstract:We reveal that lattice interfaces imprinted in nonlocal nonlinear media support surface solitons that do not exist in other similar settings, including interfaces of local and nonlocal uniform materials. We show the impact of nonlocality on the domains of existence and stability of the surface solitons, focusing on new types of dipole solitons residing partially inside the optical lattice. We find that such solitons feature strongly asymmetric shapes and that they are stable in large parts of their existence domain.

Abstract:We investigate numerically surface-wave solitons occurring at the interface between semi-infinite linear and thermal nonlinear optical media, with the refractive index of the linear medium being greater than that of the nonlinear medium (in the absence of light). We find that the threshold energy flows of the existence of the surface solitons depend on the linear refractive index difference of the two media. Their fitting empirical formula has been obtained. Furthermore, we elucidate that the optical beams propagating in thermal nonlinear optical media, either as a single surface soliton or as a dipole surface soliton, can be attracted to the surface, even when launched from far away.
Solitons in a photonic nonlinear quantum walk: lessons from the continuum

Abstract:We analyse a nonlinear QW model which can be experimentally implemented using the components of the electric field on an optical nonlinear Kerr medium, which translates into a rotation in the coin operator, with an angle which depends (in a nonlinear fashion) on the state of the walker. This simple dependence makes it easy to consider the space-time continuum limit of the evolution equation, which takes the form of a nonlinear Dirac equation. The analysis of this continuum limit allows us, under some approximations, to gain some insight into the nature of soliton structures, which is illustrated by our numerical calculations. These solitons are stable structures whose trajectories can be modulated by choosing the appropriate initial conditions. We have also studied the stability of solitons when they are subject to an additional phase that simulates an external electric field, and also explored if they are formed in higher dimensional spaces.

Interface solitons in locally linked two-dimensional lattices

Abstract:Existence, stability and dynamics of soliton complexes, centered at the site of a single transverse link connecting two parallel 2D (two-dimensional) lattices, are investigated. The system with the on-site cubic self-focusing nonlinearity is modeled by the pair of discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations linearly coupled at the single site. Symmetric, antisymmetric and asymmetric complexes are constructed by means of the variational approximation (VA) and numerical methods. The VA demonstrates that the antisymmetric soliton complexes exist in the entire parameter space, while the symmetric and asymmetric modes can be found below a critical value of the coupling parameter. Numerical results confirm these predictions. The symmetric complexes are destabilized via a supercritical symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation, which gives rise to stable asymmetric modes. The antisymmetric complexes are subject to oscillatory and exponentially instabilities in narrow parametric regions. In bistability areas, stable antisymmetric solitons coexist with either symmetric or asymmetric ones.

Abstract:We address the reflection of vector solitons, comprising several components that exhibit multiple field oscillations, at the interface between two nonlinear media. We reveal that reflection causes fission of the input signal into sets of solitons propagating at different angles. We find that the maximum number of solitons that arises upon fission is given by the number of field oscillations in the highest-order input vector soliton.

Abstract:We present new features of 1D bright solitons in the phenomenological propagation model combining competing focusing and defocusing nonlinearities with different nonlocal lengths. It has been shown that the interplay between the two nonlocal nonlinearities results in new soliton properties, including modifications of the soliton stability and variable character of the in-phase soliton interaction. In particular, an unstable composite type soliton comes to exist and serves as a transition point distinguishing repulsion from attraction behaviors in the interactions of two separate solitons. The existence of competing nonlocal nonlinearity in synthetic metamaterials synthesized from materials with different diffusive media may be possible and has indeed been experimentally confirmed for a strongly temperature dependent liquid crystal (see Warenghem et al 2008 J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 25 1882-7).

Abstract:The Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin-Ono nonlinear wave equations can describe solitary waves, all of which propagate in the same direction and which emerge from collisions with their shapes unchanged. There are technical challenges to giving a description of the thermal equilibrium of a dilute gas of such solitons. These challenges can be overcome by considering a stochastic source of new solitons located at $x=0$. The total intensity and the momentum distributions of the solitons emitted by such sources determine the equilibrium distribution of soliton momenta for $x>0$.

Triangular Bright Solitons in Nonlinear Optics and Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:We demonstrate what we believe to be novel triangular bright solitons that can be supported by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inhomogeneous Kerr-like nonlinearity and external harmonic potential, which can be realized in nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. The profiles of these solitons are quite different from the common Gaussian or sech envelope beams, as their tops and bottoms are similar to the triangle and inverted triangle functions, respectively. The self-defocusing nonlinearity gives rise to the triangle-up solitons, while the self-focusing nonlinearity supports the triangle-down solitons. Here, we restrict our attention only to the lowest-order fundamental triangular solitons. All such solitons are stable, which is demonstrated by the linear stability analysis and also clarified by direct numerical simulations. In addition, the modulated propagation of both types of triangular solitons, with the modulated parameter being the strength of nonlinearity, is also presented. We find that such propagation is strongly affected by the form of the modulation of the nonlinearity. For example, the sudden change of the modulated parameter causes instabilities in the solitons, whereas the gradual variation generates stable solitons. Also, a periodic variation of the parameter causes the regular oscillation of solitons, with the same period. Interestingly, the triangle-up and triangle-down solitons can change into each other, when the parameter changes the sign.

Abstract:An asymmetric pair of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (CNLS) equations has been derived through a multiscale perturbation method applied to a plasma fluid model, in which two wavepackets of distinct (carrier) wavenumbers ( and ) and amplitudes ( and ) are allowed to co-propagate and interact. The original fluid model was set up for a non-magnetized plasma consisting of cold inertial ions evolving against a -distributed electron background in one dimension. The reduction procedure resulting in the CNLS equations has provided analytical expressions for the dispersion, self-modulation and cross-coupling coefficients in terms of the two carrier wavenumbers. These coefficients present no symmetry whatsoever, in the general case (of different wavenumbers). The possibility for coupled envelope (vector soliton) solutions to occur has been investigated. Although the CNLS equations are asymmetric and non-integrable, in principle, the system admits various types of vector soliton solutions, physically representing nonlinear, localized electrostatic plasma modes, whose areas of existence is calculated on the wavenumbers' parameter plane. The possibility for either bright (B) or dark (D) type excitations for either of the (2) waves provides four (4) combinations for the envelope pair (BB, BD, DB, DD), if a set of explicit criteria is satisfied. Moreover, the soliton parameters (maximum amplitude, width) are also calculated for each type of vector soliton solution, in its respective area of existence. The dependence of the vector soliton characteristics on the (two) carrier wavenumbers and on the spectral index characterizing the electron distribution has been explored. In certain cases, the (envelope) amplitude of one component may exceed its counterpart (second amplitude) by a factor 2.5 or higher, indicating that extremely asymmetric waves may be formed due to modulational interactions among copropagating wavepackets. As decreases from large values, modulational instability occurs in larger areas of the parameter plane(s) and with higher growth rates. The distribution of different types of vector solitons on the parameter plane(s) also varies significantly with decreasing , and in fact dramatically for between 3 and 2. Deviation from the Maxwell-Boltzmann picture therefore seems to favor modulational instability as a precursor to the formation of bright (predominantly) type envelope excitations and freak waves.

Abstract:The discovery of a new type of solitons occuring in periodic systems without photonic bandgaps is reported. Solitons are nonlinear self-trapped wave packets. They have been extensively studied in many branches of physics. Solitons in periodic systems, which have become the mainstream of soliton research in the past decade, are localized states supported by photonic bandgaps. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a new type of solitons located at the Dirac point beyond photonic bandgaps. The Dirac point is a conical singularity of a photonic band structure where wave motion obeys the famous Dirac equation. These new solitons are sustained by the Dirac point rather than photonic bandgaps, thus provides a sort of advance in conceptual understanding over the traditional gap solitons. Apart from their theoretical impact within soliton theory, they have many potential uses because such solitons have dramatic stability characteristics and are possible in both Kerr material and photorefractive crystals that possess self-focusing and self-defocusing nonlinearities. The new results elegantly reveal that traditional photonic bandgaps are not required when Dirac points are accessible. The findings enrich the soliton family and provide valuable information for studies of nonlinear waves in many branches of physics, including hydrodynamics, plasma physics, and Bose Einstein condensates.
The Dynamical Generation of Two-Dimensional Matter-Wave Discrete Solitons

Abstract:We suggest a method to experimentally obtain two-dimensional matter-wave discrete solitons with a self-repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate in optical lattices. At the edge of the Brillouin zone, a wavepacket effective mass is negative, which could be treated as an inversion of the nonlinearity sign. Above critical nonlinearity this makes the wavepackets collapse partially into localized modes with a chemical potential located in the gap between the first and the second bands. This critical nonlinearity is also associated with the smallest nonlinearity for which the discrete solitons are possible in the gap. Extensive numerical simulations for square and asymmetric honeycomb lattices in the continuous model illustrate every stage of the process.

Abstract:We show how novel types of long-lived self-localized matter waves can be constructed with Bose-Einstein condensates. The ingredients leading to such structures are a spatial phase generating a flux of atoms towards the condensate center and the dissipative mechanism provided by the inelastic three-body collisions in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. The outcome is an striking example of nonlinear structure supported by dissipation.

Abstract:We propose a nonlinear quantum walk model inspired in a photonic implementation in which the polarization state of the light field plays the role of the coin-qubit. In particular, we take profit of the nonlinear polarization rotation occurring in optical media with Kerr nonlinearity, which allows to implement a nonlinear coin operator, one that depends on the state of the coin-qubit. We consider the space-time continuum limit of the evolution equation, which takes the form of a nonlinear Dirac equation. The analysis of this continuum limit allows us to gain some insight into the existence of different solitonic structures, such as bright and dark solitons. We illustrate several properties of these solitons with numerical calculations, including the effect on them of an additional phase simulating an external electric field.
