Abstract:We study effects of nonlocality of the cubic self-focusing nonlinearity on the stability and symmetry-breaking bifurcation (SBB) of solitons in the model of a planar dual-core optical waveg- uide with nonlocal (thermal) nonlinearity. In comparison with the well-known coupled systems with the local nonlinearity, the present setting is affected by the competition of different spatial scales, viz., the coupling length and correlation radius of the nonlocality, $\sqrt{d}$. By means of numer- ical methods and variational approximation (VA, which is relevant for small d), we find that, with the increase of the correlation radius, the SBB changes from subcritical into supercritical, which makes all the asymmetric solitons stable. On the other hand, the nonlocality has little influence on the stability of antisymmetric solitons. Analytical results for the SBB are also obtained (actually, for antisymmetric "accessible solitons") in the opposite limit of the ultra-nonlocal nonlinearity, using a coupler based on the Snyder-Mitchell model. The results help to grasp the general picture of the symmetry breaking in nonlocal couplers.

Symmetry-breaking transitions in quiescent and moving solitons in fractional couplers

Abstract:We consider phase transitions, in the form of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) bifurcations of solitons, in dual-core couplers with fractional diffraction and cubic self-focusing acting in each core, characterized by Levy index $\alpha$. The system represents linearly-coupled optical waveguides with the fractional paraxial diffraction or group-velocity dispersion (the latter system was used in a recent experiment, which demonstrated the first observation of the wave propagation in an effectively fractional setup). By dint of numerical computations and variational approximation (VA), we identify the SSB in the fractional coupler as the bifurcation of the subcritical type (i.e., the symmetry-breaking phase transition of the first kind), whose subcriticality becomes stronger with the increase of fractionality $2 - \alpha$, in comparison with very weak subcriticality in the case of the non-fractional diffraction, $\alpha = 2$. In the Cauchy limit of $\alpha = 1$, it carries over into the extreme subcritical bifurcation, manifesting backward-going branches of asymmetric solitons which never turn forward. The analysis of the SSB bifurcation is extended for moving (tilted) solitons, which is a nontrivial problem because the fractional diffraction does not admit Galilean invariance. Collisions between moving solitons are studied too, featuring a two-soliton symmetry-breaking effect and merger of the solitons.

Abstract:Recently, we analysed spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of solitons in linearly coupled dual-core waveguides with fractional diffraction and cubic nonlinearity. In a practical context, the system can serve as a model for optical waveguides with the fractional diffraction or Bose–Einstein condensate of particles with Lévy index . In an earlier study, the SSB in the fractional coupler was identified as the bifurcation of subcritical type, becoming extremely subcritical in the limit of . There, the moving solitons and collisions between them at low speeds were also explored. In the present paper, we present new numerical results for fast solitons demonstrating restoration of symmetry in post-collision dynamics.

Abstract:We show that incoherently coupled soliton pairs can exist in nonlocal Kerr-type nonlinear media. Such solitons can propagate in bright-bright, dark-dark, and gray-gray configurations. When the nonlocal nonlinearity is absent, these bright-bright and dark-dark soliton pairs are those observed previously in local Kerr-type nonlinear media. Our analysis indicates that for a self-focusing nonlinearity the intensity full width half maximum （FWHM） of the bright-bright pair components increases with the degree of nonlocality of the nonlinear response, whereas for a self-defocusing nonlinearity the intensity FWHM of the dark-dark and gray-gray pair components decreases with the increase in the degree of nonlocality of the nonlinear response. The stability of these soliton pairs has been investigated numerically and it has been found that they are stable.

Abstract:In the paper, the symmetry broken solutions for the variable coefficient coupled NNLS equations are studied by employing the similarity transformations. Based on the solutions, the dynamics of bright solitons and the interactions between dark and antidark solitons under the different dispersion and nonlinearity modulation are discussed. The results show that for periodically modulated dispersion and nonlinearity, they exhibit the evolution behaviors of periodic oscillation and periodic collision, and while under the modulation of the exponential dispersion and nonlinearity, they exhibit non-oscillatory evolution and are governed by the exponential dispersion and nonlinearity modulation. These properties can be used for manipulation of soliton.

Abstract:We study two-component surface solitons in a pair of linearly coupled truncated waveguiding arrays with the Kerr nonlinearity. Symmetric solitons have a very small stability area, while those that are antisymmetric and asymmetric are stable in vast regions. Below a critical value of the coupling constant, branches of the symmetric and asymmetric modes separate, and accordingly, asymmetric solitons cease to bifurcate from the symmetric ones, providing the first example of asymmetric modes in nonlinear couplers that do not originate from symmetric counterparts.
Symmetry breaking bifurcations and excitations of solitons in linearly coupled NLS equations with PT-symmetric potentials

Abstract:We address symmetry breaking bifurcations (SBBs) in the ground-state (GS) and dipole-mode (DM) solitons of the 1D linearly coupled NLS equations, modeling the propagation of light in a dual-core planar waveguide with the Kerr nonlinearity and two types of PT-symmetric potentials. The PT-symmetric potential is employed to obtained different types of solutions. A supercritical pitchfork bifurcation occurs in families of symmetric solutions of both the GS and DM types. A novel feature of the system is interplay between breakings of the PT and inter-core symmetries. Stability of symmetric GS and DM modes and their asymmetric counterparts, produced by SBBs of both types, is explored via the linear-stability analysis and simulations. It is found that the instability of PT-symmetric solutions takes place prior to the inter-core symmetry breaking. Surprisingly, stable inter-core-symmetric GS solutions may remain stable while the PT symmetry is broken. Fully asymmetric GS and DM solitons are only partially stable. Moreover, we construct symmetric and asymmetric GS solitons under the action of a pure imaginary localized potential, for which the SBB is subcritical. These results exhibit that stable solitons can still be found in dissipative systems. Finally, excitations of symmetric and asymmetric GS solitons are investigated by making the potential's parameters or the system's coupling constant functions, showing that GS solitons can be converted from an asymmetric shape onto a symmetric one under certain conditions. These results may pave the way for the study of linear and nonlinear phenomena in a dual-core planar waveguide with PT potential and related experimental designs.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a one-dimensional model of coupled fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a double-well potential applied to one component. This study examines ground state (GS) solitons, observing spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in both the actuated field and the partner component due to linear coupling. Numerical simulations reveal symmetric and asymmetric profiles arising from a slightly asymmetric initial condition. Asymmetry is influenced by nonlinearities, potential depth, and coupling strength, with self-focusing systems favoring greater asymmetry. Fractional diffraction affects the amplitude and localization of symmetric profiles and the stability of asymmetric ones. We identify critical Lévy index values for generating coupled GS solitons. Stability analysis of unstable, centrally asymmetric GS solitons demonstrates oscillatory dynamics, providing new insights into SSB in fractional systems and half-trapped solitons.

Abstract:In this work, we theoretically investigate the evolution of the soliton pairs in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media, which is modeled by the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Taking two pairs of solitons as an example, which initial incident directions have a mirror symmetry, a set of mathematical expressions are derived to describe the soliton pairs’ propagation, the soliton spacing, the area of the optical field. The results demonstrate that the motion state of the soliton pairs is mirror-symmetry. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the quintessential propagation properties.
One-dimensional Townes solitons in dual-core systems with localized coupling

Abstract:The recent creation of Townes solitons (TSs) in binary Bose-Einstein condensates and experimental demonstration of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in solitons propagating in dual-core optical fibers draw renewed interest to the TS and SSB phenomenology in these and other settings. In particular, stabilization of TSs, which are always unstable in free space, is a relevant problem with various ramifications. We introduce a system which admits exact solutions for both TSs and SSB of solitons. It is based on a dual-core waveguide with quintic self-focusing and fused (localized) coupling between the cores. The respective system of coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations gives rise to exact solutions for full families of symmetric solitons and asymmetric ones, which are produced by the supercritical SSB bifurcation (i.e., the symmetry-breaking phase transition of the second kind). Stability boundaries of asymmetric solitons are identified by dint of numerical methods. Unstable solitons spontaneously transform into robust moderately asymmetric breathers or strongly asymmetric states with small intrinsic oscillations. The setup can be used in the design of photonic devices operating in coupling and switching regimes.

Abstract:It is well known that the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity supports a family of stable fundamental solitons, as well as solitary vortices (alias vortex rings), which are stable for sufficiently large values of the norm. We study stationary localized modes in a symmetric linearly coupled system of two such equations, focusing on asymmetric states. The model may describe "optical bullets" in dual-core nonlinear optical waveguides (including spatiotemporal vortices that were not discussed before), or a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded into a "dual-pancake" trap. Each family of solutions in the single-component model has two different counterparts in the coupled system, one symmetric and one asymmetric. Similarly to the earlier studied coupled 1D system with the CQ nonlinearity, the present model features bifurcation loops, for fundamental and vortex solitons alike: with the increase of the total energy (norm), the symmetric solitons become unstable at a point of the direct bifurcation, which is followed, at larger values of the energy, by the reverse bifurcation restabilizing the symmetric solitons. However, on the contrary to the 1D system, the system may demonstrate a double bistability for the fundamental solitons. The stability of the solitons is investigated via the computation of instability growth rates for small perturbations. Vortex rings, which we study for two values of the "spin", s = 1 and 2, may be subject to the azimuthal instability, like in the single-component model. We also develop a quasi-analytical approach to the description of the bifurcations diagrams, based on the variational approximation. Splitting of asymmetric vortices, induced by the azimuthal instability, is studied by means of direct simulations. Interactions between initially quiescent solitons of different types are studied too.

Abstract:Soliton interactions for the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, governing the propagation of envelopes of electromagnetic waves in birefringent optical fibers, are investigated with symbolic computation. Based on the Hirota method, analytic two- and three-soliton solutions for this model are derived. Relevant interaction properties are discussed. Stationary bound vector solitons with the periodic attraction and repulsion are obtained. Soliton intensity could be reduced if the nonlinearity in optical fibers is enlarged, while the soliton period could be prolonged as the group velocity dispersion in the anomalous dispersion regime of optical fibers increases. Through the asymptotic analysis for the two-soliton solutions, interactions between two solitons are proven to be elastic. Besides, parallel soliton transmission systems without soliton interactions are presented. Moreover, interactions between the regular and bound vector solitons are studied. Dual complex structures and triple-soliton bound states are presented. Results could be of certain value to the studies on the soliton control and optical switching technologies.

Abstract:We investigate the incoherently and strongly coupled Manakov vector dipole soliton pairs in nonlocal nonlinear media. We use variational approach, to describe analytical properties of these solutions in a strongly nonlocal regime. We show that the presence of fundamental component improve stability of the dipole nonlocal soliton. In the limit of highly nonlocal nonlinearity, the evolution behaviors of the vector solitons is determined by their total power.

Abstract:We introduce one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) models of parity-time ($% \mathcal{PT}$) -symmetric couplers with the mutually balanced linear gain and loss applied to the two cores, and cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity acting in each one. The 2D and 1D models may be realized in dual-core optical waveguides, in the spatiotemporal and spatial domains, respectively. Stationary solutions for $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric solitons in these systems reduce to their counterparts in the usual coupler. The most essential problem is the stability of the solitons, which become unstable against symmetry breaking with the increase of the energy (norm), and retrieve the stability at still larger energies. The boundary value of the intercore-coupling constant, above which the solitons are completely stable, is found by means of an analytical approximation, based on the CW (zero-dimensional) counterpart of the system. The approximation demonstrates good agreement with numerical findings for the 1D and 2D solitons. Numerical results for the stability limits of the 2D solitons are obtained by means of the computation of eigenvalues for small perturbations, and verified in direct simulations. Although large parts of the solitons families are unstable, the instability is quite weak. Collisions between 2D solitons in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric coupler are studied by means of simulations. Outcomes of the collisions are inelastic but not destructive, as they do not break the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry.

Abstract:In an inhomogeneous nonlinear light guide doped with two-level resonant atoms, the generalized coupled variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger-Maxwell-Bloch system can be used to describe the propagation of optical solitons. In this paper, the Lax pair and conservation laws of that model are derived via symbolic computation. Furthermore, based on the Lax pair obtained, the Darboux transformation is constructed and soliton solutions are presented. Figures are plotted to reveal the following dynamic features of the solitons: (1) Periodic mutual attractions and repulsions of four types of bound solitons: of two one-peak bright solitons; of two one-peak dark solitons; of two two-peak bright solitons and of two two-peak dark solitons; (2) Two types of elastic interactions of solitons: of two bright solitons and of two dark solitons; (3) Two types of parallel propagations of parabolic solitons: of two bright solitons and of two dark solitons. Those results might be useful in the study of optical solitons in some inhomogeneous nonlinear light guides.
