Abstract:We reveal that there exists an indirect interaction between two single-mode microcavities which have no direct coupling. This indirect interaction is mediated by coupling the two microcavities to a common waveguide, and it plays a key role in obtaining the asymmetric Fano line shape of the transport spectrum of the coupled cavity system. Finally, we show that this sharp Fano line shape can contribute to highly sensitive sensing, which is immune to most environmental variations.

Abstract:An asymmetric embedded microring resonant system is proposed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) to achieve slope tunable Fano resonances. The Fano resonances originate from the nonlinear phase shift produced by adding an inner ring coupling with the outer ring. The slope of the Fano resonance can be well tuned to be ultra-high by controlling the microheaters to adjust the phase condition. Experimentally, we observe Fano resonance with a maximum extinction ratio of about 40 dB, and the slope can be tuned from -35 dB nm(-1) to -93 dB nm(-1), which shows good agreement with the theoretical analysis. This device could find potential applications in ultra-high sensitivity sensing systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the Fano resonance in the “eye-like” microring resonator system (EMRS) is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The asymmetric Fano-resonance line shape of EMRS is generated by adding a microring inside and coupling with the outer ring to produce a nonlinear phase shift. The EMRS was fabricated on silicon-on-insulator wafer by the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible process. Compared to the conventional single-stage microring add-drop filter structure, the maximum sharpness of the transmission of the drop port is enhanced 3 times, and the drop port extinction ratio is increased by about 20 dB. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transmission spectrum of a coupled resonator structure in which a low-Q microdisk and a high-Q microtoroid indirectly interact with each other mediated by a fiber taper. Asymmetric Fano resonances were observed and could be controlled to change periodically by adjusting the distance between the two microresonators. It is revealed that the Fano resonance originates from the coupling of the two modes belonging to the two microresonators. The observed period of distance change is around 8 μm, which shows good agreement with the theoretical prediction by the beat of multiple propagating modes in the fiber taper.

Abstract:We measure and analyze reflection spectra of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities. The observed Fano lines offer insight in the reflection and coupling processes. Very different from side-coupled systems, the observed Fano line shape is not caused by the termini of the waveguide, but the coupling process between the measurement device fiber and the waveguide. Our experimental results and analytical model show that the Fano parameter that describes the Fano line shape is very sensitive to the coupling condition. A movement of the fiber well below the Rayleigh range can lead to a drastic change of the Fano line shape.

Abstract:We explain the Fano peak (an asymmetric resonance peak) as an interference effect involving resonant states. We reveal that there are three types of Fano asymmetry according to their origins: the interference between a resonant state and an anti-resonant state, that between a resonant state and a bound state, and that between two resonant states. We show that the last two show the asymmetric energy dependence given by Fano, but the first one shows a slightly different form. In order to show the above, we analytically and microscopically derive a formula where we express the conductance purely in terms of the summation over all discrete eigenstates including resonant states and anti-resonant states, without any background integrals. We thereby obtain microscopic expressions of the Fano parameters that describe the three types of the Fano asymmetry. One of the expressions indicate that the corresponding Fano parameter becomes complex under an external magnetic field.

Abstract:We present a dynamically frequency tunable Fano resonance planar device composed of periodically asymmetric graphene nanodisk pair for the mid-infrared region. The two asymmetric graphene nanodisks can be directly excited by the light simultaneously and produce two kinds of reflected light with almost the same spectrum linewidth. By studying the local field distributions of our structure, we find that there are two kinds of modes for the two asymmetric graphene nanodisks, i.e., the symmetric mode and antisymmetric mode. Resonance coupling between the symmetric and antisymmetric modes generates the Fano resonance in our structure. This Fano resonance generation mechanism is different from it in traditional Fano resonance structure. In the traditional Fano resonance structure, the Fano resonance comes from the coupling effect between continuum and discrete structure. Moreover, we find that both of the Fano resonance amplitude and frequency of the structure can be dynamically controlled by varying the Fermi energy of graphene. Resonance transition in the structure is studied to reveal the physical mechanism behind it.
Ultra-sharp asymmetric Fano-like resonance spectrum on Si photonic platform

Abstract:In this paper, we report the generation of an ultra-sharp asymmetric resonance spectrum through Fano-like interference. This generation is accomplished by weakly coupling a high-quality factor (Q factor) Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity and a low-Q factor FP cavity through evanescent waves. The high-Q FP cavity is formed by Sagnac loop mirrors, whilst the low-Q one is built by partially transmitting Sagnac loop reflectors. The working principle has been analytically established and numerically modelled by using temporal coupled-mode-theory (CMT), and verified using a prototype device fabricated on the 340 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform, patterned by deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography. Pronounced asymmetric resonances with slopes up to 0.77 dB/pm have been successfully measured, which, to the best of our knowledge, is higher than the results reported in state-of-the-art devices in on-chip integrated Si photonic studies. The established theoretical analysis method can provide excellent design guidelines for devices with Fano-like resonances. The design principle can be applied to ultra-sensitive sensing, ultra-high extinction ratio switching, and more applications.

Abstract:By breaking the symmetrical arrangement of double micro-ring resonator, the formation mechanism and performance of reflection and transmission spectrum and optical field distribution are investigated. The reflection spectrum is Fano shape. The Fano resonance has an asymmetric and sharp resonance peak can be independently tuned by changing the asymmetric coupling factor of the first micro-ring. The transmission spectrum is electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT)-like shape. The (EIT)-like resonance can be independently tuned by changing the absorption factor and the phase shift factor of the second micro-ring. The Fano and EIT-like resonance have low loss and high near-field localization characteristics, our research has promising applications in optical communication and opto-electronic modulators.

Abstract:Dual Fano resonance was demonstrated in a compact coupling system without additional large footprint tunable devices consisting of a grating-coupled waveguide and a micro-racetrack resonator on thin film lithium niobate. A multimode interference model was proposed for the dual Fano resonance system. The inverse design method was used to realize model fitting, validate our model, and analyze our model. Based on the parameters obtained by the inverse design, we further analyzed the influence of different parameters. Our research also shows that through the interaction of two Fano resonance modes, tunable line shape and enhanced extinction ratio can be realized in the transmission spectrum, which has potential applications in optical sensing.

Abstract:The interaction between plasmonic resonances, sharp modes, and light in nanoscale plasmonic systems often leads to Fano interference effects. This occurs because the plasmonic excitations are usually spectrally broad and the characteristic narrow asymmetric Fano line-shape results upon interaction with spectrally sharper modes. We investigate a plasmonic waveguide system using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, which consists of a metal-insulator-metal waveguide coupled with a rectangle and a ring cavity. Numerical simulations results show that the sharp and asymmetric Fano-line shapes can be created in the waveguide. Fano resonance strongly depends on the structural parameters. This has important applications in highly sensitive and multiparameter sensing in the complicated environments.

Abstract:Nowadays nanotechnology allows to scale-down various important devices (sensors, chips, fibres, etc), and, thus, opens up new horizon for their applications. Nevertheless, the efficiency most of them is still based on the fundamental physical phenomena, such as resonances. Thus, the understanding of the resonance phenomena will be beneficial. One of the well-known examples is the resonant enhancement of the transmission known as Breit-Wigner resonances, which can be described by a Lorentzian function. But, in many physical systems the scattering of waves involves propagation along different paths, and, as a consequence, results in interference phenomena, where constructive interference corresponds to resonant enhancement and destructive interference to resonant suppression of the transmission. Recently, a variety of experimental and theoretical work has revealed such patterns in different branches of physics. The purpose of this Review is to demonstrate that this kind of resonant scattering is related to the Fano resonances, known from atomic physics. One of the main features of the Fano resonances is the asymmetric profile. The asymmetry comes from the close coexistence of resonant transmission and resonant reflection. Fano successfully explained such a phenomenon in his seminal paper in 1961 in terms of interaction of a discrete (localized) state with a continuum of propagation modes. It allows to describe both resonant enhancement and resonant suppression in a unified manner. All of these properties can be demonstrated in the frame of a very simple model, which will be used throughout the Review to show that resonant reflections observed in different complex systems are indeed closely related to the Fano resonances.

Abstract:A symmetry-breaking nanostructure is proposed to achieve multiple Fano resonances. The nanostructure consists of an asymmetric ring resonator coupled to a plasmonic waveguide. The broken symmetry is introduced by deviating the centers of regular ring. New resonant modes that are not accessible through a regular symmetric ring cavity are excited. Thus, one asymmetric cavity can provide more than one resonant mode with the same mode order. As a result, the interval of Fano resonances is greatly reduced. By combining different rings with different degrees of asymmetry, multiple Fano resonances are generated. Those Fano resonances have different dependences on structural parameters due to their different physical origin. The resonance frequency and resonance peak number can be arbitrarily adjusted by changing the degree of asymmetry. This research may provide new opportunities to design on-chip optical devices with great tuning performance.

Analysis of formation and evolution of double Fano resonance in sub-wavelength dielectric grating/MDM Waveguide/periodic photonic crystal

Abstract:Based on the diffraction principle and the mode coupling theory, a composite micro-nano structure of sub-wavelength dielectric grating/ metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide/periodic photonic crystal is proposed. Combined with the angle spectrum of reflection, the transmission characteristics of the surface plasmon and the generation mechanism of double Fano resonance at different incident angles and fixed wavelength are analyzed. The studies show that the physical mechanism of double Fano resonance is that the surface plasmon resonance generated at the interface of sub-wavelength dielectric grating and upper metal Ag film, and the waveguide mode resonance occurring in the MDM waveguide, provide the independently tunable double discrete states, under the condition of satisfying wave vector matching, which can be respectively coupled in the near field with the continuous state formed by the photonic band gap effect in the photonic crystal, thereby achieving the double Fano resonance. Then the influence of the structural parameters on the double Fano characteristics is analyzed quantitatively, and the evolution law of the double Fano resonance is explored by the change of the reflection spectra of resonance curves. The results show that the tuning between double Fano resonance curves and the resonance angles can be realized by changing the structural parameters. And under optimal conditions, the figure of merit (FOM) values of FR a and FR b in resonance A region can be as high as 460.0 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M3">\begin{document}$ 4.00 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>, and the FOM values of FR a and FR b in resonance B region can be as high as 269.2 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M4">\begin{document}$ 2.22 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>. The structure can provide an effective theoretical reference for designing the refractive index sensors based on Fano resonances.

Abstract:We reveal that metasurfaces created by seemingly different lattices of (dielectric or metallic) meta-atoms with broken in-plane symmetry can support sharp high-Q resonances arising from a distortion of symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum. We develop a rigorous theory of such asymmetric periodic structures and demonstrate a link between the bound states in the continuum and Fano resonances. Our results suggest the way for smart engineering of resonances in metasurfaces for many applications in nanophotonics and metaoptics.

Abstract:It is reported both experimentally and numerically that dual-band acoustic Fano resonances (AFRs) of low-frequency sound are realized by a compound unit array composed of two types of multiple-cavity unit cells with different inner radii. Eigenmode analyses show that two types of monopolar Mie resonance (MMR) modes can be observed below 650 Hz, which arise from the coupling resonance of the overall structure and the Helmholtz resonance of each resonance cavity, respectively. Based on the MMRs with the out-of-phase characteristic induced by the mutual coupling of the two types of unit cells, the dual-band AFRs, in which the quality factor of the AFR II can exceed 600 when the ratio of the inner radii is closed to 1.0, can be observed. More interestingly, the application of the dual-band AFRs in sound encryption communication is further discussed. The proposed multiple-cavity unit cell and its associated dual-band AFRs provide diverse routes to design multiband sound devices with versatile applications, such as filtering, sensing, and communication.

Abstract:Fano resonance presents an asymmetric line shape formed by an interference of a continuum coupled with a discrete autoionized state. In this paper, we show several simple circuits for Fano resonances from the stable-input impedance mechanism, where the elements consisting of inductors and capacitors are formulated for various resonant modes, and the resistor represents the damping of the oscillators. By tuning the pole-zero of the input impedance, a simple circuit with only three passive components e.g. two inductors and one capacitor, can exhibit asymmetric resonance with arbitrary Q-factors flexiblely. Meanwhile, four passive components can exhibit various resonances including the Lorentz-like and reversely electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) formations. Our work not only provides an intuitive understanding of Fano resonances, but also pave the way to realize Fano resonaces using simple circuit elements.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate a plasmonic waveguide that allows easy control of the fano profile. The proposed structure is analyzed by the coupled-mode theory and demonstrated by the finite-element method. Due to the interaction of the local discrete state and the continuous spectrum caused by the side-coupled cavity and the baffle, respectively, the transmission spectrum exhibits a sharp and asymmetric profile. The profile can be easily tuned by changing the parameters of the structure. Moreover, the compact structure can easily be extended to several complex structures to achieve multiple fano resonances. These characteristics offer flexibility in the design of the device. This nanosensor yields a sensitivity of 1280 nm/RIU and switches with an on/off contrast ratio of about 30 dB. Our structures may have potential applications for nanoscale optical switching, nanosensors, and slow-light devices in highly integrated circuits.
