Abstract:We theoretically investigate the application of coupled optical microcavities as refractive index sensors. Coupled microcavities support a very sharp asymmetrical Fano resonance, which gives rise to faster changes in output transmission than the changes from a single cavity. With the output transmission at a fixed wavelength that varies much faster than it does in a single-cavity resonance, the result is enhanced sensitivity of the device to the changes in refractive index. In addition, it is observed that both thermal and optical Kerr effects can be utilized to improve the sensitivity.

Abstract:The strong photon limiting ability of the resonant cavity makes it a critical general-purpose device. The silicon-based photonic resonant cavity is the most potential high-efficiency, low-cost on-chip solution. The organic combination of mature microelectronic technology and broadband optoelectronic technology in the micro-nano category makes this arrangement a bright future. Fano resonance with the sharp symmetry-broken line shapes occurs when a discrete quantum state interferes with a continuum band of states. Here, we analyze two directly coupled microresonators (a low- Q passive resonator and a high-Q active resonator) using the temporal coupled-mode theory (CMT). High-sensitivity refractometric sensing based on Fano resonance with directly coupled active and passive optical microresonators is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the line shape and amplitude of power transmission spectra is determined by the judgment coefficient and the pump gain of high-Q microresonator. Through modulating the loss rate, pump gain, and the detuning frequency of both cavities, the refractive index sensitivity can be enhanced six order than two directly coupled loss-loss microresonators. As the system response to the slight change of external parameter benefits from the critical behavior, ultrahigh-sensitivity refractometric sensing could be realizable due to the mechanism achieving a large slope with a relatively high extinction ratio. Our scheme is valuable for various applications of refractometric sensing in the future.

Abstract:We reveal that there exists an indirect interaction between two single-mode microcavities which have no direct coupling. This indirect interaction is mediated by coupling the two microcavities to a common waveguide, and it plays a key role in obtaining the asymmetric Fano line shape of the transport spectrum of the coupled cavity system. Finally, we show that this sharp Fano line shape can contribute to highly sensitive sensing, which is immune to most environmental variations.
Novel High Performance Fano Resonance Sensor with Circular Split Ring Resonance

Abstract:This study conducts an in-depth discussion on the Fano resonance phenomenon and its application in optical sensors. A circular split ring was proposed. By designing a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure with specific geometric parameters, we successfully excited the Fano resonance, which produced a unique asymmetric Fano through the coupling of discrete and continuous states. Resonance transmission spectroscopy. The sensitivity of Fano resonance is extremely sensitive to changes in structural parameters. This characteristic provides a theoretical basis for the development of highly sensitive optical sensors. The simulation results show that by optimizing the structural parameters, high sensitivity Fano resonance characteristics can be obtained, further enhancing the performance of the optical sensor. The calculated sensitivity is as high as 1250 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) reaches 54, indicating that the designed MIM waveguide structure has excellent sensing capabilities. This study not only demonstrates the potential of Fano resonance in improving sensor sensitivity, but also provides valuable guidance for the design and development of future optical sensors.
Side-Coupled Cavity-Induced Fano Resonance and Its Application in Nanosensor

Abstract:A compact structure based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) side-coupled cavities for nanosensor is proposed and numerically simulated. Simulation results show that a typical Lorentzian and Fano-like response emerge in the transmission spectrum, and they can be easily tuned by changing the length of the side cavity and the material imbedded in the resonator. Based on above analysis, our structures offer flexibility to design nanosensor with a sensitivity of ~1820 nm/RIU and a figure of merit about 4.5 × 10 4 . By adding another side-coupled cavity, multiple Fano resonances are achieved and the sensing properties are also investigated. Our structures may have important potential applications in highly integrated optical circuits and networks, especially for nanosensor, spectral splitter, and nonlinear devices.

Abstract:Silicon photonic biosensors based on cascaded resonators employing the Vernier effect are shown to be capable of greatly increasing the sensitivity. Two implementation schemes are presented, one using two cascaded ring resonators with a broadband light source, and the other by cascading a Fabry-Perot laser with a silicon ring resonator. Simple intensity interrogation schemes are developed to advance the planar waveguide sensor technology towards low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:By modifying the resonance condition of optical microfiber resonator while considering the strong coupling effect, we theoretically investigate the influence of coupling on the resonant wavelength and refractive index sensitivity, and compare our results with the previously published results. Numerical calculation shows significant difference in resonant wavelength and sensitivity for different coupling strengths. By considering coupling effect, the resonant peak position can be shifted as far as 3.89 nm and the sensitivity can be modified by as much as 83 nm/RIU. This suggests a method to tune the resonant wavelength and sensitivity, by varying the pitch and the coupling between two adjacent microfibers in the coupling area.

Abstract:Based on the basic theory of the microfiber loop resonator, we exploit the application of microfiber loop resonators in biochemical sensing. We set up a reliable theoretical model and optimize the structural parameters of microfiber loop resonators including the radius of the microrfiber, the radius of the loop and the length of the coupling region for higher sensitivity, wider dynamic measurement range, and lower detection limit. To show the convincible and realizable sensing ability we perform the simulation of sensing an extreme small variation of ambient refractive index by employing a set of experimental datas as the parameters in the expression of intensity transmission coefficient, and the detection limit reaches to a varation of ambient refractive index of 10-5 refractive index unit(RIU). This has superiority over the exsiting evanescent field-based subwavelength-diameter optical fiber refractive index sensor.
Slope Tunable Fano Resonances in Asymmetric Embedded Microring Resonators

Abstract:An asymmetric embedded microring resonant system is proposed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) to achieve slope tunable Fano resonances. The Fano resonances originate from the nonlinear phase shift produced by adding an inner ring coupling with the outer ring. The slope of the Fano resonance can be well tuned to be ultra-high by controlling the microheaters to adjust the phase condition. Experimentally, we observe Fano resonance with a maximum extinction ratio of about 40 dB, and the slope can be tuned from -35 dB nm(-1) to -93 dB nm(-1), which shows good agreement with the theoretical analysis. This device could find potential applications in ultra-high sensitivity sensing systems.

Abstract:A highly sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on the cascade of a Fabry-Perot cavity laser and a microring resonator is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges of the microring and the laser cavity are designed to be about the same in order to apply intensity interrogation. The variation of the refractive index of the fluidic sample results in a large shift in the envelope function of the total transmission spectrum of the sensor, and consequently, a large change in the transmitted power. The simple light-source-integrated sensing scheme achieved a high sensitivity of 1000 dB/RIU in the preliminary experiment, demonstrating its principle and potential for low-cost practical applications.

Abstract:We theoretically demonstrate a plasmonic waveguide that allows easy control of the fano profile. The proposed structure is analyzed by the coupled-mode theory and demonstrated by the finite-element method. Due to the interaction of the local discrete state and the continuous spectrum caused by the side-coupled cavity and the baffle, respectively, the transmission spectrum exhibits a sharp and asymmetric profile. The profile can be easily tuned by changing the parameters of the structure. Moreover, the compact structure can easily be extended to several complex structures to achieve multiple fano resonances. These characteristics offer flexibility in the design of the device. This nanosensor yields a sensitivity of 1280 nm/RIU and switches with an on/off contrast ratio of about 30 dB. Our structures may have potential applications for nanoscale optical switching, nanosensors, and slow-light devices in highly integrated circuits.

Abstract:A highly-sensitive integrated optical biosensor based on two cascaded micro-rings resonator (MRR) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The free spectral ranges (FSRs) of two cascaded micro-rings are designed to be slightly different in order to generate Vernier effect. A preliminary investigation of our sensor with a Q factor of 2×104 using different ethanol concentrations shows that the Vernier effect can improve the sensitivity to 1300nm per refractive index unit (RIU), compared to 62nm/RIU for a single ring sensor. The sensor also has a large measurement range of refractive index change up to 1.15×10−2 RIU. It can be useful for low-cost and highly-sensitive optical biosensor system.

Abstract:Systems with coupled cavities and waveguides have been demonstrated as optical switches and optical sensors. To optimize the functionalities of these optical devices, Fano resonance with asymmetric and steep spectral line shape has been used. We theoretically propose a coupled photonic crystal cavity-waveguide structure to achieve Fano resonance by placing partially reflecting elements in waveguide. To enhance Fano resonance, optical gain material is introduced into the cavity. As the gain increases, the transmission line shape becomes steepened and the transmissivity can be six times enhanced, giving a large contrast by a small frequency shift. It is prospected that the gain enhanced Fano resonance is very useful for optical switches and optical sensors.

Abstract:Optical microcavity has proven its potential for unlabeled sensing. Here, we propose and demonstrate in a lithium niobate on insulator microcavity an enhanced sensing approach enabled by the nonlinear mode oscillation generated by the competition between thermal-optic and photorefractive effect, which breaks the intrinsic limitation in wavelength resolution set by the cavity's optical quality factor. It allows us to perform precise measurements of the mode shifting introduced by a nanoscale scatterer with a signal to noise ratio of 13.1 dB and paves a distinctive way to improve resonance shift resolution in widely studied microcavity sensors with a platform of great integration capability.

Abstract:A liquid filled, low refractive index material inner-coated silica micro-tube has been proposed and studied as a coupled micro-resonator sensor to greatly enhance biochemical sensor sensitivity. Its unique coupling phenomenon has been analyzed and utilized to boost the refractive index sensitivity of the device to 967nm/RIU. Through optimization of the coupling strength between the two microresonators, further improvement in refractive index sensitivity up to 1100nm/RIU has been achieved. This mode coupling strategy allows us to design robust, thick-walled micro-tube sensors with ultra-high sensitivity which is useful in practical biochemical sensing applications.

Abstract:The device of free-space self-interference microresonator coupled by fiber tapers is proposed. Different from sensors with similar structures on-chip and benefit to the combination between microcavity and optical fiber sensing, the coupling regime is adjustable and a separated sensing area from coupling regions is available. This method makes it feasible to optimize coupling efficiency in detection and broaden the scope of application in dissipative sensing. The transmission spectrum exhibits a distinct phenomenon under a long optical path of sensing arm, including quasi-sinusoidal modulation and profile split. Based on that, transmission characteristics are analyzed by theoretical stimulations and the subsequent experiments are in good agreement with the theory. In addition, we estimate the sensing performance of this device and that the sensitivity can reach −4.76 dB/(10−7 RIU) with a 1 m sensing arm theoretically when applied in monitoring the refractive index change, which is almost an order of magnitude larger than the previously reported data. Besides being adjustable, compact, and efficient, this device shows great potential in the precision measurement and expands the applicable measurement field of similar structures, such as pull pressure that cannot be detected using bus straight waveguides.

Abstract:Miniaturizing optical devices with desired functionality is a key prerequisite for nanoscale photonic circuits. Based on Fano resonance, an on-chip high-sensitivity sensor, composed of two waveguides coupling with a symmetry breaking ring resonator, is theoretically and numerically investigated. The established theoretical model agrees well with the finite-difference time-domain simulations, which reveals the physics of Fano resonance. Differing with the coupled cavities, the Fano resonance originates from the interference between symmetry-mode and asymmetry-mode in a single symmetry-broken cavity. The spectral responses and sensing performances of the plasmonic structure rely on the degree of asymmetry of cavity. In particular, the plasmonic sensor can detect the refractive index changes as small as 10-5, and the figure of merit (FOM) of symmetry-breaking cavity structure is 17 times larger than that of symmetrical cavity system. Additionally, the sensitivity to temperature of ethanol analyte achieves 0.701 nm/○C. Compared with the coupled cavities, the on-chip high-sensitivity sensor using a single cavity is more compact, which paves the way toward highly integrated photonic devices.
