Abstract:We observe Fano resonance in a single microresonator, in which two modes are excited simultaneously through a fiber taper. Our analysis reveals that the Fano resonance originates from an indirect-coupling of two originally orthogonal modes.

Abstract:Measurements of the intensity transfer function of a silica microfiber resonator are shown to follow a wide variety of hysteresis cycles, depending on the cavity detuning and the scanning frequency of the range of input powers. We attribute these observations to a nonlinear phase shift of thermal origin and provide a simple model that reproduces well our measurements. The response time is found to be around 0.6 ms.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transmission spectrum of a coupled resonator structure in which a low-Q microdisk and a high-Q microtoroid indirectly interact with each other mediated by a fiber taper. Asymmetric Fano resonances were observed and could be controlled to change periodically by adjusting the distance between the two microresonators. It is revealed that the Fano resonance originates from the coupling of the two modes belonging to the two microresonators. The observed period of distance change is around 8 μm, which shows good agreement with the theoretical prediction by the beat of multiple propagating modes in the fiber taper.

Abstract:Fano resonances, sometimes behaving like electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT)-like resonances in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities are attracting much attention due to the important applications in high-sensitivity biosensing, optical switch, and slow light. In this paper, Fano resonances in several WGM systems are reported, including in a single WGM photonic microcavity and in coupled WGM microcavities. Specifically, in a single WGM microcavity system, Fano or EIT-like resonances in both polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated silica microtoroid and bare silica microtoroid are experimentally investigated. In coupled microcavity system, we report a theoretical study of EIT-like resonance in an array of microcavities indirectly coupled through a parallel waveguides system. Finally, we experimentally investigate the Fano resonance in two microcavities indirectly coupled via a single fiber taper.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally an ultracompact resonant system exhibiting sharp asymmetric Fano-resonance, in which a tiny photonic crystal nanobeam cavity is laterally coupled to a waveguide Fabry-Perot resonator. Under the presence of cavity intrinsic loss, we find that the system produces sharper and higher extinction ratio Fano resonance spectra only if appropriate phase is selected. The whole device (∼6 μm2) is implemented on silicon on insulator platform, and experimentally we observe steep-slope Fano resonance with extinction ratio of 7.3 dB, slope above 5 dB/nm, and average insertion loss less than 1.8 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, a resonant system is demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator wafer to achieve tunable Fano resonances. In this system, the Fano resonance originates from the interference of two beams resonant in the microring resonator. The shapes of the Fano resonances are tunable through controlling the phase difference of the two beams. Both large slope and high extinction ratio (ER) are obtained when the phase difference is 0.5π or 1.5π. Experimental results show that Fano resonances with steep slope and ER over 20 dB are achieved in the whole free spectral range by controlling the microheaters to meet the phase condition.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new type of whispering gallery mode microsphere resonator with microsphere-microsphere coupling. The device is based on two cascaded microspheres glued on a single mode fiber tip. The incident light from the fiber core diverges in the first microsphere and part of light is coupled to the surface of the second microsphere, exciting whispering gallery mode resonance when the angle between the connection line of the two microsphere centers and the fiber axis is appropriate. Such a whispering gallery mode microsphere resonator is robust in structure, compact in size, easy in fabrication and stable in operation.

Abstract:In this study, a baffled metal – insulator – metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with a whispering gallery mode resonator (WGMR) is proposed. This structure could excite quadruple Fano resonances. The asymmetric Fano resonance transmittance spectrum and the electric field at the resonance peak were numerically simulated using the finite difference time domain method. The obtained data were fitted using the multimode interference coupled mode theory. The number of Fano resonance peaks was tuned by the outer radius of the WGMR. With other geometric parameters unchanged, the number of Fano resonance peaks increased with increasing outer radius of the WGMR. When the ring width was fixed, the structure could excite multiple Fano resonances within a certain outer radius range. This structure was used for refractive index sensing and its sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) were 3004 nm/RIU and 3.14× 104 in a gas environment, respectively. Therefore, the proposed structure can excite multiple Fano resonances and achieve a high sensitivity and FOM, providing a theoretical basis for micro and nano applications.

Abstract:We report Fano-like asymmetric resonances modulated by optical gain in a whispering-gallery-mode resonator fabricated from erbium-doped silica. A time-dependent gain profile leads to dynamically varying sharp asymmetric resonances with features similar to Fano resonances. Depending on the scan speed of the frequency of the probe laser and the pump-probe power ratio, transmission spectra of the active microcavity exhibit a resonance dip, a resonance peak, or a Fano-like resonance.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the resonant response in a microsphere coupled with a biconical microfiber coupler (MFC) composed of single- and/or few-mode fibers. The evolution between Lorentz and Fano resonances dependent on the phase difference of the supermodes is demonstrated along the coupling region of the MFC. A flexible narrow-linewidth add-drop filter can be simultaneously achieved with the advantage of easy alignment and efficiently evanescent coupling. In addition, the mode conversion process of the microsphere is demonstrated, and the purity of the LP11 mode in a coupler at the whispering gallery mode resonance is analyzed. The proposed MFC coupling system holds great promising applications in optical filtering and sensing, mode switching, and micro-resonator-based combs.

Abstract:We reveal that there exists an indirect interaction between two single-mode microcavities which have no direct coupling. This indirect interaction is mediated by coupling the two microcavities to a common waveguide, and it plays a key role in obtaining the asymmetric Fano line shape of the transport spectrum of the coupled cavity system. Finally, we show that this sharp Fano line shape can contribute to highly sensitive sensing, which is immune to most environmental variations.

Abstract:Thermally tunable Fano and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer assisted Bragg grating-microring coupled resonant system on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. In this paper, the destructive and constructive coupling between the two resonators, the microring resonator and the Fabry-Perot resonator formed by two Bragg gratings, give rise to the Fano and EIT resonances, respectively. The resonance lineshape can be controlled and converted by tuning the optical path length of the MZI arm. The device performance has been theoretically analyzed by using a specially developed numerical model. The coupled resonant system was designed, fabricated, and characterized on a commercial (SOI) platform. The tuning and conversion of the resonance lineshape by thermo-optical effect have been experimentally observed and verified, with good agreement between the experimental data and the simulations.

Abstract:An asymmetric embedded microring resonant system is proposed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) to achieve slope tunable Fano resonances. The Fano resonances originate from the nonlinear phase shift produced by adding an inner ring coupling with the outer ring. The slope of the Fano resonance can be well tuned to be ultra-high by controlling the microheaters to adjust the phase condition. Experimentally, we observe Fano resonance with a maximum extinction ratio of about 40 dB, and the slope can be tuned from -35 dB nm(-1) to -93 dB nm(-1), which shows good agreement with the theoretical analysis. This device could find potential applications in ultra-high sensitivity sensing systems.

Abstract:We measure and analyze reflection spectra of directly coupled systems of waveguides and cavities. The observed Fano lines offer insight in the reflection and coupling processes. Very different from side-coupled systems, the observed Fano line shape is not caused by the termini of the waveguide, but the coupling process between the measurement device fiber and the waveguide. Our experimental results and analytical model show that the Fano parameter that describes the Fano line shape is very sensitive to the coupling condition. A movement of the fiber well below the Rayleigh range can lead to a drastic change of the Fano line shape.

Abstract:Here we propose and demonstrate a new type of microsphere whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator with microsphere-microsphere coupling. The coupler consists of a microsphere attached to a single mode fiber (SMF) tip by use of UV adhesive. The microsphere-microsphere coupling system is robust, compact in size, easy in fabrication and stable in operation and has good Q-factor of 4.72×10 3 . The WGM resonator developed in this work is also explored for vibration measurement.

Novel High Performance Fano Resonance Sensor with Circular Split Ring Resonance

Abstract:This study conducts an in-depth discussion on the Fano resonance phenomenon and its application in optical sensors. A circular split ring was proposed. By designing a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure with specific geometric parameters, we successfully excited the Fano resonance, which produced a unique asymmetric Fano through the coupling of discrete and continuous states. Resonance transmission spectroscopy. The sensitivity of Fano resonance is extremely sensitive to changes in structural parameters. This characteristic provides a theoretical basis for the development of highly sensitive optical sensors. The simulation results show that by optimizing the structural parameters, high sensitivity Fano resonance characteristics can be obtained, further enhancing the performance of the optical sensor. The calculated sensitivity is as high as 1250 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) reaches 54, indicating that the designed MIM waveguide structure has excellent sensing capabilities. This study not only demonstrates the potential of Fano resonance in improving sensor sensitivity, but also provides valuable guidance for the design and development of future optical sensors.
Analysis of formation and evolution of double Fano resonance in sub-wavelength dielectric grating/MDM Waveguide/periodic photonic crystal

Abstract:Based on the diffraction principle and the mode coupling theory, a composite micro-nano structure of sub-wavelength dielectric grating/ metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide/periodic photonic crystal is proposed. Combined with the angle spectrum of reflection, the transmission characteristics of the surface plasmon and the generation mechanism of double Fano resonance at different incident angles and fixed wavelength are analyzed. The studies show that the physical mechanism of double Fano resonance is that the surface plasmon resonance generated at the interface of sub-wavelength dielectric grating and upper metal Ag film, and the waveguide mode resonance occurring in the MDM waveguide, provide the independently tunable double discrete states, under the condition of satisfying wave vector matching, which can be respectively coupled in the near field with the continuous state formed by the photonic band gap effect in the photonic crystal, thereby achieving the double Fano resonance. Then the influence of the structural parameters on the double Fano characteristics is analyzed quantitatively, and the evolution law of the double Fano resonance is explored by the change of the reflection spectra of resonance curves. The results show that the tuning between double Fano resonance curves and the resonance angles can be realized by changing the structural parameters. And under optimal conditions, the figure of merit (FOM) values of FR a and FR b in resonance A region can be as high as 460.0 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M3">\begin{document}$ 4.00 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>, and the FOM values of FR a and FR b in resonance B region can be as high as 269.2 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M4">\begin{document}$ 2.22 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>. The structure can provide an effective theoretical reference for designing the refractive index sensors based on Fano resonances.

Abstract:In this study, for the first time a near full‐lineshape selectivity of the Fano resonance is demonstrated in two isolated tuning dimensions of the frequency and transverse space. With a carefully designed waveguide‐taper coupled micro‐ring resonator structure and the assistance with the grating‐coupler, arbitrary lineshapes including the Lorentzian‐dip, asymmetric Fano peak, or electromagnetically‐induced‐transparency (EIT)‐like peak can be obtained at a specific resonance wavelength in the whole C‐band. Corresponding to the different phase‐shifts of the interference modes, the whispering gallery mode resonator‐based Fano resonance exhibits a variety of unique spectral lineshapes that can be applied to sensing, optical signal processing, and so on. However, most approaches to lineshape tuning aim to alter the propagation phase‐shift or coupling strength, and generally suffer from relatively low efficiency and limited tuning range. In this paper, with a carefully designed waveguide‐taper coupled micro‐ring resonator structure and the assistance with the grating‐coupler, for the first time a near full‐lineshape selectivity of the Fano resonance is demonstrated in two isolated tuning dimensions of the frequency and transverse space, which means arbitrary lineshapes including the Lorentzian‐dip, asymmetric Fano peak or electromagnetically‐induced‐transparency (EIT)‐like peak can be obtained at a specific resonance wavelength in the whole C‐band. In addition to the different types of line shapes, the extinction ratio can also be enhanced by dynamically tuning the coupling position. This research provides an efficient approach to manipulate the transmission spectra of the Fano resonance, which is of great importance in promoting its further applications on integrated photonics platforms.

Abstract:Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circular resonators are investigated. Conformal transformation is used to transform circular resonators to more simplified structures. The principle of transverse resonance is utilized to calculate the resonant frequencies. Transmission line theory is applied to calculate the fields of electromagnetic waves. The resonant frequencies and field distributions in different high-Q resonators, including small resonators of several micrometers and large resonators of several millimeters in diameters, are investigated. The method provides a more efficient way to analyze the devices incorporating circular resonators.
