Abstract:Observability is a basic, yet challenging, issue when studying Boolean control networks (BCNs). Recently, a criterion for observability of controllable BCNs was proposed by using the algebraic representation of logical dynamics based on the technique of the semi-tensor product of matrices. In this paper, we present new necessary and sufficient conditions guaranteeing observability of a BCN without preassuming its controllability. The conditions are hence more general. Our main contribution is that we show that equation systems with bisimilar structure graphs have the same solution. We show that our work conservatively extends earlier work, conducted by Keiren and Willemse, in which dependency graphs were used to analyse a subclass of Boolean equation systems, viz., equation systems in standard recursive form. We illustrate our approach by a small example, demonstrating the effect of simplifying an equation system through minimisation of its structure graph.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of the (reactive) realizability of specifications of theories richer than Booleans, including arithmetic theories. Our approach transforms theory specifications into purely Boolean specifications by (1) substituting theory literals by Boolean variables, and (2) computing an additional Boolean requirement that captures the dependencies between the new variables imposed by the literals. The resulting specification can be passed to existing Boolean off-the-shelf realizability tools, and is realizable if and only if the original specification is realizable. The first contribution is a brute-force version of our method, which requires a number of SMT queries that is doubly exponential in the number of input literals. Then, we present a faster method that exploits a nested encoding of the search for the extra requirement and uses SAT solving for faster traversing the search space and uses SMT queries internally. Another contribution is a prototype in Z3-Python. Finally, we report an empirical evaluation using specifications inspired in real industrial cases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that succeeds in non-Boolean LTL realizability.

Abstract:The work is devoted to Computability Logic (CoL) -- the philosophical/mathematical platform and long-term project for redeveloping classical logic after replacing truth} by computability in its underlying semantics (see <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>). This article elaborates some basic complexity theory for the CoL framework. Then it proves soundness and completeness for the deductive system CL12 with respect to the semantics of CoL, including the version of the latter based on polynomial time computability instead of computability-in-principle. CL12 is a sequent calculus system, where the meaning of a sequent intuitively can be characterized as "the succedent is algorithmically reducible to the antecedent", and where formulas are built from predicate letters, function letters, variables, constants, identity, negation, parallel and choice connectives, and blind and choice quantifiers. A case is made that CL12 is an adequate logical basis for constructive applied theories, including complexity-oriented ones.

Defining Logical Systems via Algebraic Constraints on Proofs

Abstract:We present a comprehensive programme analysing the decomposition of proof systems for non-classical logics into proof systems for other logics, especially classical logic, using an algebra of constraints. That is, one recovers a proof system for a target logic by enriching a proof system for another, typically simpler, logic with an algebra of constraints that act as correctness conditions on the latter to capture the former; for example, one may use Boolean algebra to give constraints in a sequent calculus for classical propositional logic to produce a sequent calculus for intuitionistic propositional logic. The idea behind such forms of reduction is to obtain a tool for uniform and modular treatment of proof theory and provide a bridge between semantics logics and their proof theory. The article discusses the theoretical background of the project and provides several illustrations of its work in the field of intuitionistic and modal logics. The results include the following: a uniform treatment of modular and cut-free proof systems for a large class of propositional logics; a general criterion for a novel approach to soundness and completeness of a logic with respect to a model-theoretic semantics; and, a case study deriving a model-theoretic semantics from a proof-theoretic specification of a logic.

Abstract:Abstract The stability of Boolean networks and the stabilization of Boolean control networks are investigated. Using semi‐tensor product of matrices and the matrix expression of logic, the dynamics of a Boolean (control) network can be converted to a discrete time linear (bilinear) dynamics, called the algebraic form of the Boolean (control) network. Then the stability can be revealed by analyzing the transition matrix of the corresponding discrete time system. Main results consist of two parts: (i) Using logic coordinate transformation, the known sufficient condition based on incidence matrix has been improved. It can also be used in stabilizer design. (ii) Based on algebraic form, necessary and sufficient conditions for stability and stabilization, respectively, are obtained. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:It is known that a (concept) lattice contains an n-dimensional Boolean suborder if and only if the context contains an n-dimensional contra-nominal scale as subcontext. In this work, we investigate more closely the interplay between the Boolean subcontexts of a given finite context and the Boolean suborders of its concept lattice. To this end, we define mappings from the set of subcontexts of a context to the set of suborders of its concept lattice and vice versa and study their structural properties. In addition, we introduce closed-subcontexts as an extension of closed relations to investigate the set of all sublattices of a given lattice.

Abstract:The control properties of discrete-time switched linear systems (SLS) with switching signals generated by logical dynamic systems are studied using the semi-tensor product (STP) approach. With the algebraic state space representation (ASSR), the linear modes and the logical generators are aggregated as a hybrid system, leading to the criteria of reachability, controllability, observability, and reconstructibility of the SLSs. Algorithms for checking these properties are given. Then, two kinds of realization problems concerning whether the logical dynamic systems can generate the desired switching signals are investigated, and necessary and sufficient conditions for the realisability of the required switching signals are given with respect to the cases of fixed operating time switching and finite reference signal switching.

Completeness of two fragments of a logic for conditional strategic reasoning

Abstract:Classical logics for strategic reasoning, such as Coalition Logic and Alternating-time Temporal Logic, formalize absolute strategic reasoning about the unconditional strategic abilities of agents to achieve their goals. Goranko and Ju introduced a logic ConStR for strategic reasoning about conditional strategic abilities. However, its completeness is still an open problem. ConStR has three featured operators, and one of them has the following reading: For some action of A that guarantees the achievement of her goal, B has an action to guarantee the achievement of his goal. The logic about this operator is called CConStR. In this paper, we prove completeness for two fragments of CConStR. The key notions of our proof approach include downward validity lemma, grafted models, and upward derivability lemma. The proof approach has good potential to be applied to the completeness of ConStR and other logics.

On linear rewriting systems for Boolean logic and some applications to proof theory

Abstract:Linear rules have played an increasing role in structural proof theory in recent years. It has been observed that the set of all sound linear inference rules in Boolean logic is already coNP-complete, i.e. that every Boolean tautology can be written as a (left- and right-)linear rewrite rule. In this paper we study properties of systems consisting only of linear inferences. Our main result is that the length of any 'nontrivial' derivation in such a system is bound by a polynomial. As a consequence there is no polynomial-time decidable sound and complete system of linear inferences, unless coNP=NP. We draw tools and concepts from term rewriting, Boolean function theory and graph theory in order to access some required intermediate results. At the same time we make several connections between these areas that, to our knowledge, have not yet been presented and constitute a rich theoretical framework for reasoning about linear TRSs for Boolean logic.

Boolean Matching Reversible Circuits: Algorithm and Complexity

Abstract:Boolean matching is an important problem in logic synthesis and verification. Despite being well-studied for conventional Boolean circuits, its treatment for reversible logic circuits remains largely, if not completely, missing. This work provides the first such study. Given two (black-box) reversible logic circuits that are promised to be matchable, we check their equivalences under various input/output negation and permutation conditions subject to the availability/unavailability of their inverse circuits. Notably, among other results, we show that the equivalence up to input negation and permutation is solvable in quantum polynomial time, while its classical complexity is exponential. This result is arguably the first demonstration of quantum exponential speedup in solving design automation problems. Also, as a negative result, we show that the equivalence up to both input and output negations is not solvable in quantum polynomial time unless UNIQUE-SAT is, which is unlikely. This work paves the theoretical foundation of Boolean matching reversible circuits for potential applications, e.g., in quantum circuit synthesis.

Abstract:Firstly, the authors analyzed the properties of primary-onditionals and secondary-conditionals, establish the minimum system C2Lm of primary- conditionals and secondary-conditionals, and then prove some of the formal theorems of the system which have important intuitive meanings. Secondly, the authors constructed the neighborhood semantics, prove the soundness of C2Lm, introduce a general concept of canonical model by the neighborhood semantics, and then prove the completeness of C2Lm by the canonical model. Finally, according to the technical results of the minimum system C2Lm, the authors discuss some of the important problems concerning primary-conditionals and secondary-onditionals.

Abstract:Observabililty is an important topic of Boolean control networks (BCNs). In this paper, we propose a new type of observability named online observability to present the sufficient and necessary condition of determining the initial states of BCNs, when their initial states cannot be reset. And we design an algorithm to decide whether a BCN has the online observability. Moreover, we prove that a BCN is identifiable iff it satisfies controllability and the online observability, which reveals the essence of identification problem of BCNs.

Abstract:Efficient procedures for satisfiability verification are foundations of numerical simulation and algorithmic analysis of NP-complete problems. Previous researches in this direction include well-known Davis-Putnam-Logemann-Loveland (DPLL) and leaf removal procedures. In this paper, we propose a new procedure called Leaf-removal Gaussian Elimination procedure (LGC) to verify the satisfiability of a class of NP-complete problems. This novel procedure is much simpler and faster than the original DPLL procedure. We also provide estimation of the phase transition point based on this procedure. Numerical experiments are conducted for Boolean equations systems with different parameters and the results verify the validity and efficiency of our novel techniques.

Abstract:Automata networks, and in particular Boolean networks, are used to model diverse networks of interacting entities. The interaction graph of an automata network is its most important parameter, as it represents the overall architecture of the network. A continuous amount of work has been devoted to infer dynamical properties of the automata network based on its interaction graph only. Robert's theorem is the seminal result in this area; it states that automata networks with an acyclic interaction graph converge to a unique fixed point. The feedback bound can be viewed as an extension of Robert's theorem; it gives an upper bound on the number of fixed points of an automata network based on the size of a minimum feedback vertex set of its interaction graph. Boolean networks can be viewed as self-mappings on the power set lattice of the set of entities. In this paper, we consider self-mappings on a general complete lattice. We make two conceptual contributions. Firstly, we can view a digraph as a residuated mapping on the power set lattice; as such, we define a graph on a complete lattice as a residuated mapping on that lattice. We extend and generalise some results on digraphs to our setting. Secondly, we introduce a generalised notion of dependency whereby any mapping $\phi$ can depend on any other mapping $\alpha$. In fact, we are able to give four kinds of dependency in this case. We can then vastly expand Robert's theorem to self-mappings on general complete lattices; we similarly generalise the feedback bound. We then obtain stronger results in the case where the lattice is a complete Boolean algebra. We finally show how our results can be applied to prove the convergence of automata networks.
