Abstract:Clustering is a general phenomenon observed in light nuclei, especially in neutron-rich nuclei in which molecular configurations can be formed with various combinations of valence neutrons. Thus far, many theoretical models have been developed to describe nuclear clustering phenomena. These models are outlined in this review article, with an emphasis on their basic formulations and physical ingredients. In addition, various experimental tools, such as inelastic excitation and decay, transfer reactions, and resonant scattering reactions, have been applied to investigate the cluster structures inside the nucleus. Each tool possesses certain advantages and favorable applications, which are also described. In the case of neutron-rich nuclei, cluster structures may be configured as molecular states that form rotational bands with an extremely large moment of inertia and generate relatively large cluster decay width. The major experimental criteria for the identification of cluster formation are discussed herein.

Abstract:Cluster structures in nuclei have been studied for half a century and one central problem is how to understand and describe the relative motion of clusters. In 2001, the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Ropke) wave function was proposed for exploring the possible alpha condensation in n alpha nuclei. This novel microscopic cluster wave function provides us with a new perspective for understanding general cluster correlations in nuclei. In this article, we will review a new understanding for cluster structures, that is the concept of nonlocalized clustering, which is inspired by the THSR wave function. The concept of nonlocalized clustering is characterized as the dimensional size parameter rather than the traditional inter-cluster distance parameter. Based on this concept, a container picture is introduced for describing and understanding the complicated motion of clusters in nuclei.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:The study of cluster structures in light nuclei is extending to the heavy nuclei in these years. As for the stable N = Z nuclei, from the lighter 8Be, 12C nuclei to the heavier 20Ne and even the 40Ca and 44Ti medium nuclei, the α cluster structures have been well studied and confirmed. In heavy nuclei, due to the dominated mean field, the existence of α cluster structure is not clear as light nuclei but some clues were found for indicating the core+α cluster structure in some nuclei, in particular, the 208Pb+α structure in 212Po. We review some recent progress about the theoretical and experimental explorations of the α-clustering effects in heavy nuclei. We also discuss the possible α cluster structure of heavy nuclei from the view of α decay.

Abstract:Nucleus is essentially composed of protons and neutrons, which are commonly known as nucleons. Interestingly, some of nucleons may group together and exhibit collective behavior inside a nucleus. Such clustering effects have been known since the early stages of nuclear physics because of the observation and description of α-cluster decay from many heavy nuclei. Subsequent studies demonstrated that cluster structures exist in many nuclear systems, especially in weakly bound or excited states, and are complementary to the shell-like structures. In this review article, we provide a brief historical recall of the field, and follow it with a conceptual and logical description of the major theoretical models that have been frequently applied in the literature to describe nuclear clustering. Experimental methods and progress are outlined, recent outcomes are emphasized, and perspectives relevant to future studies of heavy neutron-rich systems are discussed.
New Look at Geiger-Nuttall Law and Α Clustering of Heavy Nuclei

Abstract:The Geiger-Nuttall (GN) law of α decay is commonly explained in terms of the quantum tunneling phenomenon. In this study, we show that such an explanation is actually not enough regarding the α particle clustering. Such a conclusion is drawn after exploring the involved coefficients of the GN law based on the conventional description of α decay, namely the formation of an α cluster and its subsequent penetration. The specific roles of the two former processes, in the GN law, manifest themselves via the systematical analysis of the calculated and experimental α decay half-lives versus the decay energies across the \begin{document}$ Z=82 $\end{document} and \begin{document}$ N=126 $\end{document} shell closures. The α-cluster preformation probability is then found to behave in a GN-like pattern. This previously ignored point is explicitly demonstrated as the product of an interplay between the mean-field and pairing effect, which in turn reveals the structural influence on the formation of the α cluster in a simple and clear manner. In addition to providing an effective method to evaluate the amount of surface α clustering in heavy nuclei, the present conjecture supports other theoretical treatments of the α preformation probability.

Abstract:Alpha clustering in nuclei is considered with the quartet model (QM) where four valence nucleons (the quartet) move on the top of the core (daughter) nucleus. In the QM approach, it is assumed that the intrinsic wave function of the quartet is changed from the pure cluster configuration to the shell-model configuration when it crosses some critical radius and enters into the core nucleus. The QM approach could give not only the level scheme, the electromagnetic transition, the nuclear radius, but also the alpha-cluster formation probability. Numerical results are calculated for ^20Ne, ^44Ti, and ^212Po, where a quartet moves on top of a double magic nucleus. Good agreement with experimental data and previous theoretical studies is obtained. The QM approach is a useful complement to the present phenomenological and microscopic models and could help deepen our understanding of alpha clustering across the nuclide chart.

Abstract:Formation of neutron clusters from strongly correlated neutrons has become one of the hottest topics in nuclear physics. They lie at the heart of understanding the exotic structure of nuclei around the neutron drip line and provide an important basis for testing nuclear interactions due to the absence of Coulomb interaction and further developing theoretical models. Moreover, neutron clusters composed purely of neutrons could serve as a mini prototype of neutron matter to study the still elusive properties of the extremely neutron-rich nuclear matter, building a bridge between finite nuclei and neutron stars. In this paper, we will briefly review the recent highlights of experimental and theoretical works on neutron clusters.

Abstract:We explore the connection between the appearance of quasi-stable structures in mean-field type calculations, which arise as a result of the evolution of the underlying shell structure as a function of deformation, and -clustering in light even-even nuclei. The Nilsson-Strutinsky mean-field approach employs a macroscopic liquid-drop whose energy is modified by a shell correction term derived using the Strutinsky method. This method reflects the variations in the energies of the single-particle states with deformation. As such, there is no obvious connection to clustering. Here we use the changing level scheme of the deformed harmonic oscillator as a function of triaxial deformation to fully explore the variation in stability of -cluster structures in light even-even nuclei. The energies of the harmonic oscillator levels are used to deduce the energy required to disrupt the -cluster as a function of the triaxial deformation. We find that there is good agreement between variations in the shell correction energy in the mean-field method and the energy required to disrupt the -cluster. This provides a necessary link between understanding of the appearance of quasi-stable -cluster structures and quasi-stable shapes appearing in mean-field calculations.

New Insight into Α Clustering of Heavy Nuclei Via Their Α Decay

Abstract:Based on the available experimental data of nuclear charge radii and neutron skin thickness, we have renewed the two-parameter Fermi (2pF) form of nucleon density distributions in heavy nuclei. Subsequently, we focus on the α clustering phenomenon of heavy nuclei in terms of the preformation probability of α cluster before its penetration in α decay. Through the experimental decay data, the α preformation factor Pα is extracted for a large range of nuclei above the N=126 shell, leading to the interesting recognition on the behavior of α cluster formation factor. It is found that the present α preformation factor varies more smoothly towards the large neutron–proton ratio, as compared to those from the previous evaluations. This may be explained by the fact that we have separately considered proton and neutron density distributions of related nuclei, while they are treated as the same form in our previous studies. Meanwhile, the presence of the Z=92 subshell is somewhat revealed by the picture of α formation factor in this study. Moreover, the similarity between the Pα value and the pairing gap is clearly demonstrated, indicating the crucial role of pairing correlation involved in the α decay process.

Abstract:We investigate the α+^{16}O cluster structure in the inversion-doublet band (Kπ=0(1)±}) states of 20Ne with an angular-momentum-projected version of the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (THSR) wave function, which was successful "in its original form" for the description of, e.g., the famous Hoyle state. In contrast with the traditional view on clusters as localized objects, especially in inversion doublets, we find that these single THSR wave functions, which are based on the concept of nonlocalized clustering, can well describe the Kπ=0(1)- band and the Kπ=0(1)+ band. For instance, they have 99.98% and 99.87% squared overlaps for 1- and 3- states (99.29%, 98.79%, and 97.75% for 0+, 2+, and 4+ states), respectively, with the corresponding exact solution of the α+16O resonating group method. These astounding results shed a completely new light on the physics of low energy nuclear cluster states in nuclei: The clusters are nonlocalized and move around in the whole nuclear volume, only avoiding mutual overlap due to the Pauli blocking effect.

Abstract:Coupling of cluster and deformed structures are important for dynamics of nuclear structure. Threshold energy has been discussed to explain cluster structures coupling to deformed states but relation between threshold energy and excitation energy has open problems. Negative-parity superdeformed (SD) states were observed by a $\gamma$-spectroscopy experiment in $^{35}$Cl but its detailed structure is unclear. By analyzing coupling of cluster structures in deformed states and high-lying cluster states in $^{35}$Cl, cluster structures coupling to deformed states and excitation energy of high-lying cluster states are investigated. The antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) and the generator coordinate method (GCM) are used. An AMD wave function is a Slater determinant of Gaussian wave packets. By energy variational calculations with constraints on deformation and clustering, wave functions of deformed structures and $\alpha$- and $t$-cluster structures are obtained. Adopting those wave functions as GCM basis, wave functions of ground and excited states are calculated. Various deformed bands are obtained and predicted. A $K^\pi = \frac{1}{2}^-$ deformed band, which corresponds to the observed SD band, dominates deformed structure and compact $\alpha$- and $t$-cluster structure components. Particle-hole configurations of the dominant components with deformed and cluster structures are similar. In high-lying states, almost pure $\alpha$- and $t$-cluster states are obtained in negative-parity states, and excitation energies of the $t$-cluster states are higher than those of $\alpha$-cluster states. In conclusions, particle-hole configurations of cluster structure with small intercluster distance are important for coupling to low-energy deformed states. Threshold energies reflect to excitation energies of high-lying almost pure cluster states.

Abstract:The formation of clusters in low density matter formed in near Fermi energy heavy ion collisions has been investigated using the NIMROD multi-detector at Texas A&M University. Emphasis is on elucidation of the low density equation of state. Temperature and density dependent symmetry free energies derived from isoscaling analyses of the yields of nuclei with A <= 4 are far above those obtained in common effective interaction calculations, reflecting the cluster formation. A possible extensionof the experimental techniques to investigations of nuclear Bose condensates is also discussed.

Abstract:Photon-nuclear reaction in a transport model frame, namely an extended quantum molecular dynamics model, has been realized at the photon energy of 70-140 MeV in the quasi-deuteron regime. For an important application, we pay a special focus on photonuclear reactions of C-12(gamma,np)B-10 where C-12 is considered as different configurations including a clustering. Obvious differences for some observables have been observed among different configurations, which can be attributed to spatial-momentum correlation of a neutron-proton pair inside nucleus, and therefore it gives us a sensitive probe to distinguish the different configurations including a clustering with the help of the photonuclear reaction mechanism.

Abstract:We introduce our recent works on the clustering effects in atomic nuclear systems.The clustering structures for 20Ne and 9,10Be isotopes are studied with the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R(o)pke (THSR) wave function.It is found that a single THSR wave function can provide good description for the cluster state.The nonlocalised aspect of cluster dynamics is discovered with the hybrid-THSR-Brink wave function.Extensions are made for the THSR wave function to enable studies of N ≠ Z nuclei.The nuclear molecular orbit structures in low lying states of 9,10Be isotopes are correctly reproduced with this wave function.We also discuss the α-decay processes for proton/neutron-rich nuclei.The effect of proton/neutron skin is found to be considerable on α-decay half-life.

Abstract:The $\alpha$ cluster states are discussed in a model frame of extended quantum molecular dynamics. Different alpha cluster structures are studied in details, such as $^8$Be two-$\alpha$ cluster structure, $^{12}$C triangle structure, $^{12}$C chain structure, $^{16}$O chain structure, $^{16}$O kite structure, and $^{16}$O square structure. The properties studied, include as the width of wave packets for different $\alpha$ clusters, momentum distribution, and the binding energy among $\alpha$ clusters. It is also discussed how the $\alpha$ cluster degree of freedom affects nuclear collective vibrations. The cluster configurations in $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O are found to have corresponding characteristic spectra of giant dipole resonance (GDR), and the coherences of different $\alpha$ clusters's dipole oscillation are described in details. The geometrical and dynamical symmetries of $\alpha$-clustering configurations are responsible for the number and centroid energies of peaks of GDR spectra. Therefore, the GDR can be regarded as an effective probe to diagnose different $\alpha$ cluster configurations in light nuclei.

Abstract:A container picture is proposed for understanding cluster dynamics where the clusters make nonlocalized motion occupying the lowest orbit of the cluster mean-field potential characterized by the size parameter "B" in the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Ropke (THSR) wave function. The nonlocalized cluster aspects of the inversion-doublet bands in Ne-20 which have been considered as a typical manifestation of localized clustering are discussed. An as-yet-unexplained puzzling feature of the THSR wave function, namely that after angular-momentum projection for two-cluster systems the prolate THSR wave function is almost 100% equivalent to an oblate THSR wave function, is clarified. It is shown that the true intrinsic two-cluster THSR configuration is nonetheless prolate. The proposal of the container picture is based on the fact that typical cluster systems, 2 alpha, 3 alpha, and O-16 + alpha, are all well described by a single THSR wave function. It is shown for the case of linear-chain states with 2- and 3 alpha clusters, as well as for the O-16 + alpha system, that localization is entirely of kinematical origin, that is, attributable to the intercluster Pauli repulsion. It is concluded that this feature is general for nuclear cluster states.

Abstract:Radioactive ion beams were produced through the projectile fragmentation induced by 69MeV/nucleon 36 Ar primary beam on a 9 Be target. Measurements of reaction cross section (σR) for some proton-rich nuclei on carbon target at intermediate energies around 30MeV/nucleon have been performed on RIBLL of HIRFL by transmission method and transmission plus transportation method. The experimental σR values for 23Al and 27P are abnormally large compared with their neighboring nuclei and that of 17F has an enhancement compared with the neighboring isotopes. It suggests anomalously large matter root-mean-square radii and proton halo structure in 23 Al and 27 P . The experimental σR values and momentum distribution of fragmentation reaction product for 31 Cl , 32 Cl , 33 Cl , 28 S , 29 S were performed also on RIBLL by transmission and transportation method. These data are in analyzing. The calculation of relativistic density-dependent Hartree shows that the nuclei 23 Al , 27 P , 31 Cl may have proton-halo structure and 17F, 32Cl may have proton-skin structure. New experiment on the search for new nuclides 25 P and 26 S in proton drip line is also described. The significance of these measurements and possible proton halo and skin for light proton-rich nuclei has been discussed.
