Abstract:Selected topics on halo and molecular states in light, neutron-rich nuclei are discussed. In particular, work on $x\alpha$:X$n$ structures is briefly reviewed. The use of proton radiative capture as a probe of clustering is also presented through the example provided by the $^6$He(p,$\gamma$) reaction.

Abstract:Clustering is a general phenomenon observed in light nuclei, especially in neutron-rich nuclei in which molecular configurations can be formed with various combinations of valence neutrons. Thus far, many theoretical models have been developed to describe nuclear clustering phenomena. These models are outlined in this review article, with an emphasis on their basic formulations and physical ingredients. In addition, various experimental tools, such as inelastic excitation and decay, transfer reactions, and resonant scattering reactions, have been applied to investigate the cluster structures inside the nucleus. Each tool possesses certain advantages and favorable applications, which are also described. In the case of neutron-rich nuclei, cluster structures may be configured as molecular states that form rotational bands with an extremely large moment of inertia and generate relatively large cluster decay width. The major experimental criteria for the identification of cluster formation are discussed herein.

Abstract:Nucleus is essentially composed of protons and neutrons, which are commonly known as nucleons. Interestingly, some of nucleons may group together and exhibit collective behavior inside a nucleus. Such clustering effects have been known since the early stages of nuclear physics because of the observation and description of α-cluster decay from many heavy nuclei. Subsequent studies demonstrated that cluster structures exist in many nuclear systems, especially in weakly bound or excited states, and are complementary to the shell-like structures. In this review article, we provide a brief historical recall of the field, and follow it with a conceptual and logical description of the major theoretical models that have been frequently applied in the literature to describe nuclear clustering. Experimental methods and progress are outlined, recent outcomes are emphasized, and perspectives relevant to future studies of heavy neutron-rich systems are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract A long-standing crucial question with atomic nuclei is whether or not α clustering occurs there. An α particle (helium-4 nucleus) comprises two protons and two neutrons, and may be the building block of some nuclei. This is a very beautiful and fascinating idea, and is indeed plausible because the α particle is particularly stable with a large binding energy. However, direct experimental evidence has never been provided. Here, we show whether and how α (-like) objects emerge in atomic nuclei, by means of state-of-the-art quantum many-body simulations formulated from first principles, utilizing supercomputers including K/Fugaku. The obtained physical quantities exhibit agreement with experimental data. The appearance and variation of the α clustering are shown by utilizing density profiles for the nuclei beryllium-8, -10 and carbon-12. With additional insight by statistical learning, an unexpected crossover picture is presented for the Hoyle state, a critical gateway to the birth of life.

Abstract:Formation of neutron clusters from strongly correlated neutrons has become one of the hottest topics in nuclear physics. They lie at the heart of understanding the exotic structure of nuclei around the neutron drip line and provide an important basis for testing nuclear interactions due to the absence of Coulomb interaction and further developing theoretical models. Moreover, neutron clusters composed purely of neutrons could serve as a mini prototype of neutron matter to study the still elusive properties of the extremely neutron-rich nuclear matter, building a bridge between finite nuclei and neutron stars. In this paper, we will briefly review the recent highlights of experimental and theoretical works on neutron clusters.

Abstract:It is shown that the hole in the centre of 3 H , 3 He and 4 He , the neutron halos in nuclei, the α- and other clustering effects in nuclei and the nuclear molecules all basically arise due to the same underlying effect. We shall show that all these ground state properties of nuclei are manifestations of quark effects. The role of triton clustering in very neutron rich nuclei is emphasized. All these require the concept of hidden colour states which arise from confinement ideas of QCD for the multi-quark systems. This provides a comprehensive understanding of diverse nuclear effects and makes unique predictions.

Abstract:The study of cluster structures in light nuclei is extending to the heavy nuclei in these years. As for the stable N = Z nuclei, from the lighter 8Be, 12C nuclei to the heavier 20Ne and even the 40Ca and 44Ti medium nuclei, the α cluster structures have been well studied and confirmed. In heavy nuclei, due to the dominated mean field, the existence of α cluster structure is not clear as light nuclei but some clues were found for indicating the core+α cluster structure in some nuclei, in particular, the 208Pb+α structure in 212Po. We review some recent progress about the theoretical and experimental explorations of the α-clustering effects in heavy nuclei. We also discuss the possible α cluster structure of heavy nuclei from the view of α decay.

Abstract:The neutron halo and other ground-state properties of light nuclei have been studied systematically by mean-field approximation with Skyrme force fit Eσ as the effective interaction. Pairing interactions between identical nucleons are considered with the particle number conservation (PNC) method. The relationship between neutron pairing interaction and neutron halo in light nuclei is discussed based on the calculation.

Abstract:Halo phenomena in deformed nuclei are investigated within a deformed relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (DRHB) theory. These weakly bound quantum systems present interesting examples for the study of the interdependence between the deformation of the core and the particles in the halo. Contributions of the halo, deformation effects, and large spatial extensions of these systems are described in a fully self-consistent way by the DRHB equations in a spherical Woods-Saxon basis with the proper asymptotic behavior at large distance from the nuclear center. Magnesium and neon isotopes are studied and detailed results are presented for the deformed neutron-rich and weakly bound nucleus $^{44}$Mg. The core of this nucleus is prolate, but the halo has a slightly oblate shape. This indicates a decoupling of the halo orbitals from the deformation of the core. The generic conditions for the occurence of this decoupling effects are discussed.

This approach is not only theoretically sound but also amenable to experimental validation. Our research focuses on Mg, Al, Si, P, and S neutron-drip-line nuclei, offering systematic predictions of neutron halo candidates in terms of separation energies, SF (TNA), and average occupation. The calculation suggests the ground states of $^{40,42,44,46}$Al, $^{41,43,45,47}$Si, $^{46,48}$P, and $^{47,49}$S are promising candidates for one-neutron halos, while $^{40,42,44,46}$Mg, $^{45,47}$Al, $^{46,48}$Si, $^{49}$P, and $^{50}$S may harbor two-neutron halos. Abstract:The ground state properties of O isotopes have been studied in the nonlinear relativistic mean-field theory with NL-SH parameters. Neutron halos in O-24, O-26, and O-28 are predicted. Abstract:Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in coordinate-space is used to describe the chain of lithium isotopes reaching from Li-6 to Li-11. Pairing correlations are taken into account by a density dependent force of zero range. In contrast to earlier investigations within a relativistic mean field theory and a density dependent Hartree-Fock theory, where the halo in Li-11 could only be reproduced by an artificial shift of the 1(P1/2) level close to the continuum limit, the halo is now reproduced in a self-consistent way, without further modifications, using the scattering of Cooper pairs to the 2s(1/2) level in the continuum. Excellent agreement with recent experimental data is observed.

Abstract:The excited states of some odd A nuclei near the stability line have been systematically investigated from light to intermediate mass with the spherical relativistic mean field (RMF) model. The ratio between the valence nucleon root-mean-square (RMS) radius and the core rms radius, the separation energy and the density distribution have been deduced as signatures for halo or skin structure. We have presented the scaling laws of the ratio of valence particle rms radii and square-potential radii versus the scaled separation energies. The probability for a valence particle being out of the binding potential has also been extracted. We proposed a relaxed necessary condition for nuclear halo occurrence.
A two-cluster approach to the properties of one- and two-neutron-halo nuclei

Abstract:In this work, we present a new approximate method for obtaining simple wave functions and effective operators for the ground state of exotic nuclei with a neutron halo. We treat the core and halo as inert objects in a two-cluster model. The relative wave function is a combination of simple harmonic oscillator states with a size that is determined from a relation between the nuclear radius and separation energy. Since these wave functions lack the expected exponential decay, we apply a multiplicative renormalization to the radial part of the operators, determined from the nuclear root-mean-square radius. This combination of oscillator wavefunctions and renormalized operators is then applied to the calculation of dipole strength distributions $dB(E1,\varepsilon)/d\varepsilon$ for several $1n$- and $2n$-halo nuclei. By fitting a single free parameter, the results show excellent agreement with the available experimental data.
