Abstract:Kinds of halos in the relativistic continuum Hartree Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory are described. While giant halo in the even N Ca isotopes near neutron drip line is predicted, properties of some proton magic nuclei, such as O, Ni, Zr, Sn, and Pb, ranging from the proton drip line to neutron drip line, are briefly studied. Halos in hypernuclei, for example, the neutron halo in Ca hypernuclei and the single hyperon halo in 15 3Λ C, are also investigated. In addition, deformed halo is also mentioned as well as the developing self consistent deformed RCHB theory.

Abstract:The Relativistic Continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory, which properly takes into account the pairing correlation and the coupling to (discretized) continuum via Bogoliubov transformation in a micro- scopic and self-consistent way, has been reviewed together with its new interpretation of the halo phenomena observed in light nuclei as the scattering of particle pairs into the continuum, the prediction of the exotic phenomena — giant halos in nuclei near neutron drip line, the reproduction of interaction cross sections and charge-changing cross sections in light exotic nuclei in combination with the Glauber theory, better restora- tion of pseudospin symmetry in exotic nuclei, predictions of exotic phenomena in hyper nuclei, and new magic numbers in superheavy nuclei, etc. Recent investigations on new effective interactions, the density dependence of the interaction strengthes, the RMF theory on the Woods-Saxon basis, the single particle resonant states, and the resonant BCS (rBCS) method for the pairing correlation, etc. are also presented in some details.

Abstract:The phenomena of giant halo and halo of neutron-rich even-Ca isotopes are investigated and compared in the frameworks of the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) and non-relativistic Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations. With two parameter sets for each of the RCHB and the Skyrme HFB calculations, it is found that although halo phenomena exist for Ca isotopes near neutron drip line in both calculations, the halo of the Skyrme HFB calculations starts at a more neutron-rich nucleus than that of the RCHB calculations, and the RCHB calculations have larger neutron root-mean-square (rms) radii systematically in N >= 40 than those of the Skyrme HFB calculations. The former difference comes from the difference in shell structure. The reasons for the latter can be partly explained by the neutron 3s(1/2) orbit, causes more than 50% of the difference among the four calculations for neutron rms radii at Ca-66.

Abstract:Properties of single- Λ and double- Λ hypernuclei for even-N Ca isotopes ranging from the proton dripline to the neutron dripline are studied using the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with a zero-range pairing interaction. Compared with ordinary nuclei, the addition of one or two Λ-hyperons lowers the Fermi level. The predicted neutron dripline nuclei are, respectively, 75ΛCa and 762ΛCa, as the additional attractive force provided by the Λ-N interaction shifts nuclei from outside to inside the dripline. Therefore, the last bound hypernuclei have two more neutrons than the corresponding ordinary nuclei. Based on the analysis of two-neutron separation energies, neutron single-particle energy levels, the contribution of continuum and nucleon density distribution, giant halo phenomena due to the pairing correlation, and the contribution from the continuum are suggested to exist in Ca hypernuclei similar to those that appear in ordinary Ca isotopes.

Abstract:In this contribution we present some recent results about neutron halos in deformed nuclei. A deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum has been developed and the halo phenomenon in deformed weakly bound nuclei is investigated. These weakly bound quantum systems present interesting examples for the study of the interdependence between the deformation of the core and the particles in the halo. Magnesium and neon isotopes are studied and detailed results are presented for the deformed neutron-rich and weakly bound nuclei 42Mg. The core of this nucleus is prolate, but the halo has a slightly oblate shape. This indicates a decoupling of the halo orbitals from the deformation of the core. The generic conditions for the existence of halos in deformed nuclei and for the occurrence of this decoupling effect are discussed.

Abstract:Ground state systemic, properties of single-Lambda and double-Lambda hypernuclei for even-N Ca isotopes ranging from the proton drip-line to the neutron drip-line are studied by using the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with a density-dependent delta pairing interaction. Compared with the ordinary nuclei, the predicted neutron drip line nuclei are (77)(Lambda) Ca and Ca-78(LambdaLambda) respectively, i.e., the last bound hypernuclei has two more neutrons than that of ordinary nuclei. Abstract:Halo phenomenon in deformed nuclei is studied by using a fully self-consistent deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model in a spherical Woods-Saxon basis with the proper asymptotic behavior at large distance from the nuclear center. Taking a deformed neutron-rich and weakly bound nucleus 44Mg as an example and by examining contributions of the halo, deformation effects, and large spatial extensions, we show a decoupling of the halo orbitals from the deformation of the core.

Abstract:The properties of even-even Ca isotopes are studied using the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory. The calculations reproduce very well the experimental binding energies E and two neutron separation energies S-2n. The predicted neutron drip nuclei is Ca-72. From the analysis of S-2n, the neutron radii and neutron density distribution, giant neutron haloes are predicted in Ca isotopes with A > 60.

Abstract:The newly discovered neutron halos in the excited states of nuclei B-12, C-13, and Pb-209 are studied by the relativistic mean-field theory. The calculated binding energies are very close to the experimental ones. The experimentally extracted root-mean-square radii of the last neutron with different occupations in nuclei are well reproduced by calculations. New candidates for the neutron halos in excited states are predicted and are useful for further search of neutron halos in the excited states of stable nuclei.

Abstract:The covariant density functional theory with a few number of parameters has been widely used to describe the ground-state and excited-state properties for the nuclei all over the nuclear chart. In order to describe exotic properties of unstable nuclei, the contribution of the continuum and its coupling with bound states should be treated properly. In this Topical Review, the development of the covariant density functional theory in continuum will be introduced, including the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory, the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, and the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum. Then the descriptions and predictions of the neutron halo phenomena in both spherical and deformed nuclei will be reviewed. The diffuseness of the nuclear potentials, nuclear shapes and density distributions, and the impact of the pairing correlations on nuclear size will be discussed.

Abstract:The properties of even-even O, Ca, Ni, Zr, Sn, and Pb isotopes from the $\ensuremath{\beta}$-stability line to the neutron drip line are studied with the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory, where both the spin-orbit interaction and continuum are properly taken into account. The available experimental binding energies ${E}_{b}$ and two-neutron separation energies ${S}_{2n}$ are reproduced very well. The predicted neutron drip-line nuclei are, respectively, ${}^{74}\mathrm{Ca},$ ${}^{100}\mathrm{Ni},$ ${}^{140}\mathrm{Zr},$ ${}^{176}\mathrm{Sn},$ and ${}^{268}\mathrm{Pb}.$ Based on the analysis of two-neutron separation energies, single-particle energy levels, the orbital occupation, the contribution of continuum and nucleon density distribution, giant halo phenomena due to pairing, correlation and the contribution from the continuum are suggested to appear in Ca isotopes with $A>60$ apart from Zr isotopes predicted earlier.

Abstract:Nuclear halo structure and conservation of relativistic symmetry are studied within the framework of the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Giant halos as well as ordinary ones are found in cerium isotopes close to the neutron drip line. Bridged by the T = 0 channel, the conservation of pseudospin symmetry (PSS) plays an essential role in stabilizing the neutron halo structures. The Fock terms, especially the rho-tensor couplings, not only play a significant role in PSS conservation but also present substantial contributions to the T = 0 channel, by which the necessity of Fock terms is well demonstrated.

Abstract:The density-dependent relativistic mean-field theory, without introducing any adjustment, is applied to the nuclei Be-12, Be-14, Ne-30 and Ne-32. Contrary to the failure of the relativistic mean-field theory for the halo nuclei Be-14 and Ne-32, the density-dependent relativistic mean-field theory, in which the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results of nuclear matter have been incorporated, can satisfactorily reproduce the experimental data of the binding energy and the abnormally large root-mean-square radius. It is also predicted that the halo neutrons in Be-14 occupy the 2s(1/2) level instead of the 1d(5/2) level and the halo neutrons in Ne-32 occupy the 2p(3/2) and 2p(1/2) levels instead of the 1f(7/2). A new picture on the appearance of the neutron halo has been obtained.

Abstract:The excited states of some odd A nuclei near the stability line have been systematically investigated from light to intermediate mass with the spherical relativistic mean field (RMF) model. The ratio between the valence nucleon root-mean-square (RMS) radius and the core rms radius, the separation energy and the density distribution have been deduced as signatures for halo or skin structure. We have presented the scaling laws of the ratio of valence particle rms radii and square-potential radii versus the scaled separation energies. The probability for a valence particle being out of the binding potential has also been extracted. We proposed a relaxed necessary condition for nuclear halo occurrence.

Abstract:The current study on proton halos in exotic light nuclei is reviewed and discussed. We place emphasis on the newly discovered proton halo in 23 Al. A measurement of the reaction cross section of N =10 isotones and Z =13 isotopes is performed at Lanzhou in China. An abnormal increase in the reaction cross section is observed for 23 Al. This abnormal increase, combined with other data, strongly suggests that there is a proton halo in 23 Al. The possible cause for a proton halo in 23 Al is analyzed, and it is found that deformation can be important for it. Other candidates for proton halos are predicted.
