Abstract:Using the relativistic Hartree–Bogoliubov approach with separable pairing force coupled with the latest point-coupling and meson-exchange covariant density functionals, i.e., PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-MEX, and DD-PCX, we systematically explore the ground-state properties of all isotopic chains from oxygen ( Z = 8 ) to darmstadtium ( Z = 110 ). These properties consist of the binding energies ( E b ), one- and two-neutron separation energies ( S n and S 2n ), root-mean-square radii of matter ( R m ), of neutron ( R n ), of proton ( R p ) and of charge ( R c ) distributions, Fermi surfaces ( λ ), ground-state spins ( J ) and parities ( π ). We then use these calculated properties to predict the edges of nuclear landscape and bound nuclei for the isotopic chains of Z = 8–110. The number of bound nuclei predicted by PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-MEX, and DD-PCX, are 9004, 9162, 7112, and 6799, respectively. These latest covariant density functionals produce a set of rather similar proton drip lines due to the strong repulsive Coulomb force shifting up the single-proton energy of the proton-rich nuclei. PC-L3R and PC-X estimate more extended borders of the neutron-rich region compared with the neutron drip lines estimated by DD-MEX, and DD-PCX. Meanwhile, the root-mean-square deviations of one- (two-) neutron separation energies yielded from PC-L3R, PCX, DD-MEX, and DD-PCX are 0.962 (1.300) MeV, 0.920 (1.483) MeV, 1.010 (1.544) MeV, and 0.993 (1.753) MeV, respectively. The deviations of theoretical S n , S 2n , and charge radii from the available experimental ones increase at the regions further away from the proton magic numbers, indicating the important role of deformation in these regions. The root-mean-square deviations of charge radius distributions of comparing the available experimental values with the theoretical counterparts resulted from PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-MEX, and DD-PCX are 0.035 fm, 0.037 fm, 0.034 fm, and 0.035 fm, respectively. We compute and present the root-mean-square radii of neutron distributions for all isotopes of 8 ≤ Z ≤ 110 with respect to the empirical R n . Basically, the systematic trends of the theoretical root-mean-square radii of neutron distributions generated from PC-L3R and PC-X closely follow the empirical R n , except for the region of extreme neutron-rich nuclei, whereas DD-PCX produces a trend lower than the empirical R n at the N < 150 region. We notice pronounced differences between the empirical and theoretical R n at nuclei near the neutron drip line of the Mg, Ca, and Kr isotopic chains, suggesting the possible existence of the halo or giant halo phenomena.

Abstract:The large nucleon-nucleon scattering length, and the isospin approximate symmetry, are low energy properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). These entail correlations in the binding energies of light nuclei, e.g., the A=3 iso-multiplet, and Tjon's correlation between the binding energy of three and four body nuclei. Using a new representation of these, we establish that they translate into a correlation between different short-range contributions to three body forces in chiral effective field theory of low-energy nuclear physics. We demonstrate that these correlations should be taken into account in order to avoid fine-tuning in the calibration of three body forces. We relate this to the role of correlations in uncertainty quantification of non-renormalizable effective field theories of the nuclear regime. In addition, we show that correlations can be useful in assessing the importance of forces induced by renormalization group (RG) transformations. We give numerical evidence that such RG transformations can be represented effectively by adding a constant to the pure three nucleon contact low energy constant $c_E$.

Abstract:[Background] Nuclear pairing is a well-established many-body correlation, particularly among like particles in a spin-singlet state. However, the strength of spin-triplet proton-neutron (pn) pairing in nuclei has remained a long-standing and unresolved issue. [Purpose] The relative strength of spin-triplet pn pairing compared to spin-singlet one is investigated by introducing and analyzing the polarizability of the response to pn pair transfers. [Method] The nuclear energy-density functional method is employed. The ground state of the target nucleus is described using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation, which accounts for the conventional superfluidity of like-particle pairs. The response to pn pair transfers is then analyzed using the pn quasiparticle random-phase approximation. [Results] The spin-singlet pn-pair correlation is strongest at $N=Z$ and decreases monotonically with the increasing number of excess neutrons, whereas the spin-triplet pn-pair correlation is shown to depend non-monotonically on the neutron number and can be enhanced in cases where the pn-pair transfers involving the $\pi j_> \otimes \nu j_<$ configuration occur at low energy. [Conclusions] The shell effect, which uniquely appears in spin-triplet pn-pair correlation, serves as a key indicator of the strength of pn-pair correlations.

Abstract:The well-known correlations of low-energy three and four-nucleon observables with a typical three-nucleon scale (e.g., the Tjon line) is extended to light nuclei and nuclear matter. Evidence for the scaling between light nuclei binding energies and the triton one are pointed out. We argue that the saturation energy and density of nuclear matter are correlated to the triton binding energy. The available systematic nuclear matter calculations indicate a possible band structure representing these correlations.

Pairing Interaction in Exotic Nuclei: Finite Range or Zero Range?

Abstract:The proper form of the pairing interaction near the drip line is discussed. The relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) theory in coordinate space is used to describe the chain of even-even nickel isotopes reaching from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line. The pairing correlations are taken into account by both a density-dependent force of zero range and the finite range Gogny force. Through the comparisons of the two neutron separation energies S-2n, the neutron, proton, and matter rms radii, excellent agreement has been found between the calculations with both interactions and the empirical values. The same drip-line nuclei Ni-100 have been predicted. The pairing energies, single particle levels in the canonical bases and their corresponding occupation probabilities have turned out to be similar. It is shown clearly that after proper renormalization (e.g., fixing the corresponding pairing energies here), physical observables such as S-2n and rms radii remain the same, even within a reasonable region of the interaction strength.
Universality of Short-Range Correlations in One- and Two-Nucleon Momentum Distributions of Nuclei

Abstract:Universality of short range correlations has been investigated both in coordinate and in momentum space, by means of one-and two-body densities and momentum distributions. In this contribution we discuss one- and two-body momentum distributions across a wide range of nuclei and their common features which can be ascribed to the presence of short range correlations. Calculations for few-body nuclei, namely 3He and 4He, have been performed using exact wave functions obtained with Argonne nucleon-nucleon interactions, while the linked cluster expansion technique is used for medium-heavy nuclei. The center of mass motion of a nucleon-nucleon pair in the nucleus, embedded in the full two-body momentum distribution n_NN(krel,KCM), is shown to exhibit the universal behavior predicted by the two-nucleon correlation model, in which the nucleon-nucleon pair moves inside the nucleus as a deuteron in a mean-field. Moreover, the deuteron-like spin-isospin (ST)=(10) contribution to the pn two-body momentum distribution is obtained, and shown to exactly scale to the deuteron momentum distribution. Universality of correlations in two-body distributions is cast onto the one-body distribution n(k1), obtained by integration of the two-body n_NN(k1, k2): in particular, the high momentum part of n(k1) exhibits the same pattern for all considered nuclei, in favor of a universal character of the short range structure of the nuclear wave function. Perspectives of this work, namely the calculation of reactions involving light and complex nuclei with realistic wave functions and effects of Final State Interactions (FSI), investigated by means of distorted momentum distributions within the Glauber multiple scattering approach, are eventually discussed.

Abstract:The ground-state properties of nuclei with 8 <= Z <= 120 from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line have been investigated using the spherical relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory with the relativistic density functional PC-PK1. With the effects of the continuum included, there are totally 9035 nuclei predicted to be bound, which largely extends the existing nuclear landscapes predicted with other methods. The calculated binding energies, separation energies, neutron and proton Fermi surfaces, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, ground-state spins and parities are tabulated. The extension of the nuclear landscape obtained with RCHB is discussed in detail, in particular for the neutron-rich side, in comparison with the relativistic mean field calculations without pairing correlations and also other predicted landscapes. It is found that the coupling between the bound states and the continuum due to the pairing correlations plays an essential role in extending the nuclear landscape. The systematics of the separation energies, radii, densities, potentials and pairing energies of the RCHB calculations are also discussed. Abstract:Nuclear properties of nuclei with a few valence nucleons outside the doubly -magic Sn-132 core and located in the octupole correlation region have been investigated via gamma-gamma-gamma coincidence measurements of prompt gamma-ray emitted in the spontaneous fission of Cf-252 with Gammasphere. The high spin level scheme of I-134 has been identified for the first time. Shell model calculations reproduce the level scheme quite well. The level schemes of I-137 and Cs-139 have been reinvestigated and extended. Their nuclear structure is well described by realistic shell model calculations. The g-factors of the 4(+) state in Te-134, 15/2(+) state in I-135, and 15/2(-) state in Xe-137 were determined using a newly developed program for angular correlation analysis. The measured g-factors compared favorably with shell model calculations. Octupole correlations are proposed in Cs-141 and Cs-142. The variations of D-0 in the Cs isotopes exhibit a pronounced drop of dipole moment with increasing neutron number.

Abstract:Motivated by the newly observed ^39Na in experiments, systematic calculations of global nuclear binding energies with seven Skyrme forces are performed. We demonstrate the strong correlation between the two-neutron separation energies (S_2n) of ^39Na and the total number of bound nuclei of the whole nuclear landscape. Furthermore, with calculated nuclear masses, we perform astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process (r-process) simulations by using nuclear reaction code TALYS and nuclear reaction network code SkyNet. r-process abundances from ejecta of neutron star mergers and core-collapse supernova are compared. Prominent covariance correlations between nuclear landscape boundaries and neutron-rich r-process abundances before the third peak are shown. This study highlights the needs for further experimental studies of drip-line nuclei around ^39Na for better constraints on nuclear landscape boundaries and r-process.

Prospects for advances in the regions of four new "outposts" are highlighted: $^{28}$O, $^{42}$Si, $^{60}$Ca and $^{78}$Ni. Abstract:In this paper we study low-lying states of atomic nuclei with random interactions, within the framework of the nuclear shell model. The distributions of R-6 versus R-4 (where R-I = E-I1(+) / E-21(+)), empirical proton-neutron interaction, and charge radius are investigated by using a two-body random ensemble. The Mallmann plot exhibits statistical correlations between R-6 and R-4. The proton-neutron interaction between the last proton and the last neutron in even-A nuclei is found to be stronger than that in odd-A nuclei, and that in N = Z nuclei is even stronger. Simple relations of nuclear charge radii for neighboring nuclei are found to survive remarkably for the random ensemble.

Abstract:Nucleon-nucleon momentum correlation function have been presented for nuclear reactions with neutron-rich or proton-rich projectiles using a nuclear transport theory, namely Isospin-Dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. The relationship between the binding energy of projectiles and the strength of proton-neutron correlation function at small relative momentum has been explored, while proton-proton correlation function shows its sensitivity to the proton density distribution. Those results show that nucleon-nucleon correlation function is useful to reflect some features of the neutron- or proton-halo nuclei and therefore provide a potential tool for the studies of radioactive beam physics.

Abstract:Possible bound nuclei beyond the two-neutron drip line in the $50\leqslant Z \leqslant 70$ region are investigated by using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with density functional PC-PK1. Bound nuclei beyond the drip lines of $_{56}$Ba, $_{58}$Ce, $_{62}$Sm, $_{64}$Gd and $_{66}$Dy are predicted, forming peninsulas of stability in nuclear landscape. Near these peninsulas, several multi-neutron emitters are predicted. The underlying mechanism of the peninsulas of stability is investigated by studying the total energy, Fermi surface, quadrupole deformation and the single-neutron spectrum in the canonical basis. It is found that the deformation effect is crucial for forming the peninsulas of stability, and pairing correlations are also essential in specific cases. The dependence on the deformation evolution is also discussed. The decay rates of multi-neutron radioactivity in Ba and Sm isotopic chains are estimated by using the direct decay model.

The Relative Abundance of Correlated Spin-zero Nucleon Pairs

Abstract:We utilize the generalized contact formalism in conjunction with the Woods-Saxon mean-field description of the long-range part of the nuclear wave function to assess the relative prevalence of short-range correlation pairs within atomic nuclei. We validate our approach by fitting experimental charge density results and electron scattering experiments to a very good agreement. Applying our model, we calculate the spin-zero short-range correlations contact ratios. Interestingly, for nuclei with $A>50$, we observe a notable dependence on the neutron-to-proton ratio $N/Z$. Specifically, the probability per nucleon to find neutron-neutron pairs increases, while that of proton-proton pairs decreases, whereas the probability of finding neutron-proton pairs remains relatively constant. To interpret this isospin symmetry breaking effect, we employ a simple model based on generalized Levinger constants, linking it to differences in nuclear proton and neutron radii.

Abstract:Formation of neutron clusters from strongly correlated neutrons has become one of the hottest topics in nuclear physics. They lie at the heart of understanding the exotic structure of nuclei around the neutron drip line and provide an important basis for testing nuclear interactions due to the absence of Coulomb interaction and further developing theoretical models. Moreover, neutron clusters composed purely of neutrons could serve as a mini prototype of neutron matter to study the still elusive properties of the extremely neutron-rich nuclear matter, building a bridge between finite nuclei and neutron stars. In this paper, we will briefly review the recent highlights of experimental and theoretical works on neutron clusters.

Abstract:We perform a systematic study of all the traditional neutron magic nuclei with N = 8, 20, 28, 50, 82 and 126, from the neutron drip line to the proton drip line. We adopt the deformed relativistic mean-field theory as our framework and treat pairing correlations by a simple BCS method with a zero-range delta-force. Remarkable agreement with the available experimental data is obtained for the binding enemies. the two- and one-proton separation energies. and the nuclear charge radii. The calculated nuclear deformations are compared with the available experimental data and the predictions of the FRDM mass formula and the HFBCS-1 mass formula. We discuss, in particular, the appearance of sub-shell magic nuclei by observing irregular behaviour in the two- and one-proton separation energies.

Abstract:In this paper we study the correlation between the evolution of nuclear collective motion and neutron-proton interactions. We construct empirical neutron-proton interactions (denoted by VNP) for nuclei in the (28 < Z < 50, 50 < N < 82), (50 < Z < 82, 50 < N < 82), and (50 < Z < 82, 82 < N < 126) major shells. The ratios between VNP and NnNp (the product of valence proton number and valence neutron number) are found to be different for particle-particle, particle-hole, and hole-hole regions of the same major shell, suggesting different average strengths of neutron-proton interactions for these regions. Very interestingly, collective observables of even-even nuclei, e.g., 2(+) and 4(+) state energies, which follow different trajectories in the NnNp scheme for particle-particle, particle-hole, and hole-hole regions, are found to form one unified and compact trajectory if those collective observables are plotted in terms of total neutron-proton interactions, VNP.
