Abstract:In the background of venture capital market's flourish with venture stage's remarkable retroposition,this paper discusses the performance effects of venture capital institutions' investment stage selection, and uses data from 2003 to 2008 to demonstrate the likelihood and boundary conditions of early-stage investment and late-stage investment's positive effects on venture capital institution's performance. The result shows that, in open network, early-stage investment exposes positive effect on performance of venture capital institutions with high reputation, while negative effect on performance of VC institutions with low reputation. In closed network, late-stage investment exposes positive and stronger effect on performance of VC institutions with high reputation. In order to promote the orderly development of Chinese venture capital industry and optimize entrepreneurial environment, some suggestions are provided to venture capital institutions and government guiding funds.

Abstract:This paper empirically tests the influence of the characteristics of fund managers from the micro level and management strate-gy from fund company operating level on fund performance. The research results show that,there is no significant correlation between most of the variables of fund manager personal characteristics and fund performance. While there is a significant positive correlation be-tween whether the fund is star fund before the manager’s tenure and fund performance. The results provide a reference for understanding the main influence factors of fund performance,but also conducive to investors on the choice of securities investment fund.
On the Performance and Risk Attributes of Hedge Funds in China

Abstract:This article studies the performance and risk attributes of hedge funds in China using a new hedge fund database (e.g., the CHRFC Research Database). We examine potential biases embedded in this database and find that the hedge funds are less affected by those well-documented biases, e.g., the survivorship bias (0.41% per year) and the backfill bias (0.02% per year), compared with their estimations in the literature of US-based hedge fund databases. We then develop a composite index to investigate the performance attributes and risk characteristics of Chinese hedge funds. Our analysis shows that hedge funds in China as a group, as represented by the composite index, performed better than the stock market indices, especially on a risk-adjusted basis, while in the cross section there are wide variations in both performance and risk measures among funds. Using an extension of the Fama-French three-factor model to identify both economic variables and risk factors that drive the dynamics of the return-risk patterns of hedge funds, we find that both SMB and HML factors are helpful to interpret risk exposures of Chinese hedge funds.
Fund Performance Factors:Perspective from Fund Manager Characteristics

Abstract:Based on the relationship between fund manager characteristics and fund performance,this article empirically studies the impact of age,gender,tenure,work experience,banking background,educational background,and qualified certification on fund performance.The empirical results show that age,tenure,MBA are negatively correlated with fund performance,while the banking background experiences a positive correlation with the fund performance.Besides,fund managers with PH.D.degree perform worse than those with Master degree,female managers perform better than male counterparts.Work experience has little effect on performance.CFA certification holders perform slightly better,and managers with financial professional background perform much better than other professional managers.In addition,this article studies performance of masters graduated from top ten universities in China and finds their funds' ROIC is 13.6 to 15.4 percent higher compared to others.The study shows that higher human capital and social capital enhance fund performance while experience capital has little effect.

An Empirical Analysis of the Impact of Fund Manager's Personal Characteristics on Fund Performance

Abstract:A great deal of research found that fund performance is related to a series of personal characteristics of fund managers, but how these personal characteristics affect fund performance is still unknown. China is the most important emerging country and the second largest economy in the world. The development of China's capital market is different from that of most developed countries. Therefore, empirical evidence on the performance of funds in developed countries often cannot be extended to the Chinese market. In addition, there is evidence that many successful fund managers in developed countries may not achieve good performance in China. Therefore, it is particularly meaningful to examine the determinants of fund performance in the Chinese market. This paper establishes a three-level framework model to study this connection. Considering return and risk, the two basic factors that affect fund performance, this paper chooses nine proxy variables: Sharpe ratio, Jensen index, Treynor index, abnormal return (α), total risk (β), non-systemic risk, standard deviation of return, stock choosing ability and time picking ability as the criteria to measure the comprehensive performance. This paper investigates China's open-end funds to fill the gap in literature on the relationship between fund managers' personal characteristics and fund performance in emerging capital markets. The results of this paper found that age, gender, fund manager years, number of funds under management, master's or doctor’s degree, MBA degree, business background and fund managers have better stock choosing ability, higher abnormal return and better overall performance has a significant positive relationship. The results of further decomposition indicate that the abnormal return is the main influencing factor of the fund's comprehensive performance; the abnormal return is also affected by the fund manager's ability of stock choosing and time picking. In addition, stock choosing ability is the main factor affecting abnormal return. Therefore, the education background of the fund manager’s personal characteristics will affect the abnormal return and ultimately affect the comprehensive performance of the fund. This paper also finds that gender and majors affect fund managers' risk control behavior. research results in this paper have great practical significance. Firstly, it introduces a framework that can explain how the individual characteristics of fund managers affect the performance mechanism of funds. Secondly, the findings in China's stock market supplement the empirical evidence in the mature markets of developed countries. Since China is already the largest emerging economy in the world, the results of this study are of great significance not only to Chinese researchers, but also to international scholars who want to study China's capital market. Thirdly, the empirical study is of great practical significance to test the ability of fund managers to divide abnormal earnings into stock choosing ability and time picking ability.

Abstract:Purpose The Chinese fund market has witnessed significant developments in recent years. However, although there has been a range of studies assessing fund performance in developed industries, the rapidly developing fund industry in China has received very little attention. This study aims to examine the performance of open-end securities investment funds investing in Chinese domestic equity during the period May 2003 to September 2020. Specifically, applying a non-parametric bootstrap methodology from the literature on fund performance, the authors investigate the role of skill versus luck in this rapidly evolving investment funds industry. Design/methodology/approach This study evaluates the performance of Chinese equity securities investment funds from 2003–2020 using a bootstrap methodology to distinguish skill from luck in performance. The authors consider unconditional and conditional performance models. Findings The bootstrap methodology incorporates non-normality in the idiosyncratic risk of fund returns, which is a major drawback in “conventional” performance statistics. The evidence does not support the existence of “genuine” skilled fund managers. In addition, it indicates that poor performance is mainly attributable to bad stock picking skills. Practical implications The authors find that the top-ranked funds with positive abnormal performance are attributed to “good luck” not “good skill” while the negative abnormal performance of bottom funds is mainly due to “bad skill.” Therefore, sensible advice for most Chinese equity investors would be against trying to “pick winners funds” among Chinese securities investment funds but it would be recommended to avoid holding “losers.” At the present time, investors should consider other types of funds, such as index/tracker funds with lower transactions. In addition, less risk-averse investors may consider Chinese hedge funds [Zhao (2012)] or exchange-traded fund [Han (2012)]. Originality/value The paper makes several contributions to the literature. First, the authors examine a wide range (over 50) of risk-adjusted performance models, which account for both unconditional and conditional risk factors. The authors also control for the profitability and investment risks in Fama and French (2015). Second, the authors select the “best-fit” model across all risk-adjusted models examined and a single “best-fit” model from each of the three classes. Therefore, the bootstrap analysis, which is mainly based on the selected best-fit models, is more precise and robust. Third, the authors reduce the possibility that findings may be sample-period specific or may be a survivor (upward) biased. Fourth, the authors consider further analysis based on sub-periods and compare fund performance in different market conditions to provide more implications to investors and practitioners. Fifth, the authors carry out extensive robustness checks and show that the findings are robust in relation to different minimum fund histories and serial correlation and heteroscedasticity adjustments. Sixth, the authors use higher frequency weekly data to improve statistical estimation.

Abstract:Presumably, hedge fund managers pursue unique strategies because they have great new ideas and superior investment skills, while less skilled managers are more likely to herd and follow publicly known investment ideas. For investors, knowing how innovative and skillful their managers are is thus extremely important but very difficult because of the opaque nature of hedge fund operations. In this project, we intend to construct a measure of the distinctiveness of a fund's investment strategy based on historical fund return data. Specifically, we plan to examine the R-square of a regression of individual hedge fund returns against the average returns of its peer funds. We term (1 - R2) the "Hedge Fund Strategy Distinctiveness Index" (SDI), which measures the extent to which a fund's investment strategy differs from the strategies of the peer funds. We hypothesize that the more distinctive a fund's investment strategy, the more innovative and skillful the fund manager, and the better future performance. We will conduct empirical tests to probe whether funds with higher SDI indeed offer better subsequent risk adjusted performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the performance persistence of hedge funds over time horizons between 6 and 36 months based on a merged sample from the Lipper/TASS and CISDM databases for the time period from 1994 to 2008. Unlike previous literature, we use a panel probit regression approach to identify fund characteristics that are significantly related to performance persistence. We then investigate the performance of two-way sorted portfolios where sorting is based on past performance and one of the additional fund characteristics identified as persistence-enhancing in the probit analysis. We find statistically and economically significant performance persistence for time horizons of up to 36 months. Although we identify several fund characteristics that are strongly correlated with the probability of observing performance persistence, we find only one fund characteristic, a strategy distinctiveness index that attempts to measure manager skills and the uniqueness of the hedge fund’s trading strategies, to have the ability to systematically improve performance persistence up to a time horizon of 24 months. The economic magnitude of this improvement amounts to a sizeable increase in alpha by approximately 4.0% and 2.3% p.a. for annual and biennial rebalancing, respectively.

Abstract:The paper uses the quintile regression model to study the effects of fund manager characteristics on its performance.The main findings are as follows:the performance of fund manager posses persistence,especially for the fund managers with better performance;the in-service time of fund manager has significant contribution to its performance, but the experience from other funds doesn't lend itself to the performance promotion;securities experience is an inevitable condition for the performance promotion of fund manager,but that doesn't mean the longer the securities experience, the better performance promotion;without evidences to support that scholar backgrounds and persistent time of historical fund managers have significant contribution to the performance promotion.The study plays a certain guidance role for the selection and appointment of fund managers. For example,fund corporations should insist on the principle of Performance First,but shouldn't overly indulge in the mystery of Experience First.

Abstract:This paper examines the effect of rapid expansion of the hedge fund industry on mutual fund managerial turnovers. Deuskar et al. (2011) find that mutual funds retain skilled managers by offering side-by-side arrangements. We find that talented fund managers tend to leave mutual funds and establish their own hedge funds when side-by-side arrangements are not feasible. Mutual fund returns and flows decrease if their managers leave mutual funds to establish hedge funds, especially when the hedge fund industry is growing rapidly and performing well. Both institutional and retail investors react to this managerial turnover by reducing net flows. The hedge fund industry has grown rapidly in China. According to the Asset Management Association of China, there are 24,471 hedge fund management companies managing 81,739 individual funds with total assets under management (AUM) of RMB 13.82 trillion in China by the end of 2019. Abstract:We provide novel evidence that hedge fund performance is persistent following weak hedge fund markets but is not persistent following strong markets. Specifically, we construct two performance measures, RET DOWN and RET UP, conditioned on the level of overall hedge fund sector returns. After adjusting for risks, funds in the highest RET DOWN quintile outperform funds in the lowest quintile by approximately 7% in the subsequent year, whereas funds with better RET UP do not outperform subsequently. The RET DOWN measure can predict future fund performance over a horizon as long as 3 years, for both winners and losers and for funds with few share restrictions.

Abstract:In order to study the relationship among ownership incentive,portfolio managers' personal characteristics and fund performance,this paper collects data of public offering fund in the second half year of 2015.Use SPSS to analyze the related data.This paper has found that managerial ownership has positive effect on fund performance.The career experience of portfolio manager has negative moderating effect on the relationship between managerial ownership and fund performance.The moderating effect of the tenure of portfolio manager isn't obvious.However,the tenure of portfolio manager has negative effect on fund performance.Therefore this paper provides advices to both supervision department and investors.

Abstract:Mutual fund has become more and more important investor in Chinese capital market,and star fund managers are the focus now.So it's important to tell whether fund manger's performance is persistent.We use the data from 2003 to 2008 to test the persistence of fund manager performance.The results tell us that fund manager performed persistently,and we could get excess return through buying the portfolio managed by the best manager.And it also support that Chinese capital market is not very efficient.

Abstract:Using a database of hedge funds in China, this paper examines the impact of limited attention by analysing the performance of hedge fund managers who are distracted by managing multiple funds simultaneously, or managerial multitasking. We perform an empirical analysis on a sample of 1031 hedge fund managers in China over the period from April 2010 to December 2017. We find that managers who multitask have lower returns, lower alpha, and lower overall performance. We investigate the impact of the switch from single-tasking to multitasking on the fund performance and our results support the attention distraction hypothesis, but not in favor of the effort diversion or synergy creation hypothesis. Moreover, we find that the practice of multitasking has a negative impact on fund performance during a bull market. Further, we find that multitasking managers have lower performance if they use multiple strategies in fund activities or serve on the management team at fund companies.

Abstract:Hedge fund has earned its evil reputation since the Asian Currency Crisis of 1997 and the near-failure of LTCM in 1998.In the recent years,rapid rising oil market and hot Chinese RMB arbitrage wave contribute an extra unfriendly mask to the Hedge Fund Industry.From a point of view of Econometric Analysing,does hedge fund really mean 'danger'? Following the mean-variance approach,this essay will analyze the characteristics of the historical performance of hedge fund industry.Our empirical studies show that hedge funds returns:(1) Performed better than traditional investment vehicle;.(2) Are not normally distributed;(3) Are not correlated with both equity index and sovereign bond index return.As a whole,Hedge fund Industry performed much better and showed no more dangerous than traditional investment vehicle.

Abstract:We study a group of newly-emerged hedge funds in China, focusing on their performance and growth under a series of recent regulatory changes. These include the implementation of short sale restrictions and a circuit breaker. We find that the funds in our sample generally outperformed the stock market despite these regulatory disruptions. The best-performing equity related strategies were long-short and multiple strategies. Our results indicate that the ability to sell short is important for all funds adopting equity-related strategies other than the long strategy. The imposition of short sale restrictions significantly reduced hedge fund performance, and the performance differential between "winner" and "loser" funds converged over time. The evidence suggests that the regulatory changes have greatly affected the hedge fund industry in China.

Abstract:IntroductionRecently, the need for higher education has become a considerably controversial topic. Scholars of all fields question whether academia and practice can be integrated seamlessly, and whether such integration is practicable in the workplace. This study aims at elucidating how the characteristics and education backgrounds of fund managers correlate with the performance of the funds they manage. According to Chevalier and Ellison (1999a), the perfonnance of funds operated by managers who attain an MBA from one of the top 30 schools listed by Business Week is superior to those operated by fund managers who receive their education at other schools. The findings of that study also show that fund perfonnance is unassociated with fund managers who have postgraduate degrees.Numerous scholars contend that gender influences work perfonnance, claiming that men are more willing to take risks, and they are more confident in strategy fonnulation. Previous studies indicate that a glass ceiling is common, even in businesses in Chinese communities. However, Atkinson, Baird, and Frye (2003) report that gender does not have a significant influence on fund performance.Heilman et al. (1989) and Oakley (2000) explore gender as a variable of fund manager characteristics and show that men outperform women in terms of work ability; consequently, investors are more willing to invest in funds that are managed by men. However, these claims are regarded as general stereotypes.In accordance with the research background and motivations, this study adopts an empirical analysis approach to determine the association between the education background of fund managers in Taiwan and the performance of the funds they operate, thereby providing an objective method for identifying the association between fund manager characteristics and fund performance. Investors can use the findings of This study as a reference when choosing investment funds.This paper is structured into 5 chapters. Chapter I presents the introduction, research motivations, and objectives, and Chapter II presents the findings of previous literatme in the fonn of a literature review. The research design is introduced in Chapter III, followed by a discussion regarding the various research variables and models. In, Chapter IV, the empirical results are discussed and the performance of fund managers with varying characteristics is compared. Abstract:The number of pension funds has multiplied exponentially over the last decade. Active portfolio management requires a precise analysis of the performance drivers. Several risk and performance attribution metrics have been developed since the 70s to guide investors in their investment choices. Based on the study made by Fama and French (2010) we reproduce the experiment they had carried out in order to complete their work using additionnal features. Throughout this study we draw a parallel between the results obtained by Fama and French (2010) with the 3-factor model. The aim of this paper is to assess the usefulness of two additional factors in the analysis of the persistence of alphas. We also look at the quality of the manager through his investment choices in order to generate alpha considering the environment in which he operates.

Abstract:This study examines the difference in investment style and performance between individual and team-managed mutual funds and the impact of internal mode of the team on investment style and performance using the data of 1030 Chinese mutual funds with a ten-year span from 2003 to 2012.The results suggest no significant difference between individual and team-managed funds in terms of Sharpe ratio,timing and selectivity skill,which is consistent with classical decision-making theory.Strong evidence shows that team-managed stock and hybrid funds have lower risk than individual-managed funds,which is consistent with diversification theory.Team size and team tenure reduce timing skill of hybrid funds.Team tenure brings higher Sharpe ratio to stock funds with higher risk,but lower risk to bond funds,implying accentuation of group tendency.
