Abstract:Three reaction systems were selected to investigate the influence of reactants distributed in a bulk or in an adsorption layer on the preparation of silver nanoparticles. Reactant distribution in three systems was measured by iodometric, Volhard's and conductivity methods, respectively. Results show that the reactants in system I and II both distributed mainly in the bulk and the adsorption layer could not affect the reactant distribution. In system III, both the formation and the change of the adsorption layer could influence much on the reactant distribution. When the adsorption layer formed gradually in system III, mass percent of NaOH adsorbed on SiO2 changed from 25 to 60%. With amount of reactant in the adsorption layer increasing, reaction region transferred gradually from the bulk to the adsorption layer, which led to more homogeneous Ag particles with smaller size on SiO2 surface. Due to the significant inhibition of the nanoreactor, the size of Ag particles grew in the adsorption layer was below 5nm.

By limiting the supply of silver atoms (red) nucleation and growth occurs on only one, or a few, of the six equivalent faces of a cubic palladium seed, as represented by the presence of hungry and feeding frogs.
Preparation of CuO-Ag/SiO2 nano-composites via adsorption phase reaction technique

Abstract:CuO/SiO2, CuO-Ag/SiO2 nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via adsorption phase reaction technique. The influence of pre-doped nano-Ag on the preparation of CuO was discussed in different reaction systems. The results showed that the influence of Ag nanoparticles on the synthesis of CuO depended on the species of the adsorbent. Using Cu(Ac)(2) as adsorbent, nano Ag showed little effect on the synthesis of Cu, while using NaOH as adsorbent, nano Ag promoted the grain size of Cu. This was absolutely different from the influence of copper species on the grain size of Ag. Via comparing the adsorption behavior of different adsorbents, the interaction between Cu(OH)(2) and silica surface was considered to be responsible for this phenomena.
Effect of Interphase Distribution of Reactants in Binary Liquids on Preparation of Silver Nanoparticles on Silica Particles

Abstract:Two kinds of adsorbates—L-ascorbic acid and NaOH were used separately to investigate the effects of adsorbate distribution between ethanol bulk phase and the phase of water-rich layer adsorbed by the surface of SiO2 particles on the preparation of silver nanoparticles on SiO2 particles. When the adsorbate L-ascorbic acid was used, L-ascorbic distributes mainly in the ethanol bulk phase and thus the Ag particle generating reaction will take place in the ethanol bulk phase with the generated Ag particle size of about 18 nm. When the adsorbate NaOH was used, NaOH distributes mainly in the phase of water-rich layer adsorbed on the surface of SiO2 particles and thus the Ag particles generate in the water-rich adsorption layer with particle size of only about 5.4 nm. Since the NaOH concentration effects its distribution between the two phases of ethanol bulk phase and water-rich adsorption layer, the further experiments with changing NaOH concentration in the reaction system from 0.0170 to 0.404 g·L-1 were conducted. Results show that when concentration of NaOH in the system was increased from 0.0170 to 0.135 g·L-1, the NaOH concentration in the water-rich adsorption layer increases with the increase of NaOH concentration in the system gradually, which causes the generation of Ag grains gradually centralizes in the adsorption layer with the grain size decreases from 8 nm to 5 nm, and the Ag particles generated cover the SiO2 more uniformly. When NaOH concentration in the system was increased from 0.135 to 0.404 g·L-1, the amount of NaOH in the system is over the maximum NaOH capacity that can be contained in the water-rich adsorption layer and thus the NaOH concentration in ethanol bulk phase will increase to the limit, above which, the Ag generating reaction rate in it will accelerate more quickly than that in the water-rich adsorption layer, which causes the main generation zone of silver nanoparticles moves from water-rich adsorption layer to ethanol bulk phase gradually, and at the same time, the generated Ag grain size will increase from 5 nm to 12 nm.

Abstract:The reaction between MO and NaBH4 catalyzed by Ag NPs has been studied. Ag NPs catalyzed the reduction of MO rapidly, while adding CTAB into the solution caused the regeneration of MO. Thus, reversible catalysis for the reaction between MO and NaBH4 by Ag NPs was discovered for the first time.

Abstract:The adsorption characteristics of platinum(IV) and palladium(II) from aqueous solutions onto the ethylenediamine-modified magnetic chitosan nanoparticles (EMCN) have been investigated. The magnetic chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by adding the basic precipitant of NaOH solution into a W/O microemulsion system. The transmission electron microscope showed that the diameter of EMCN was from 15 to 40 nm. The adsorption experiments indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity occurred at around pH 2.0 for both Pt(IV) and Pd(II). Due to the small diameter and the high surface reactivity, the adsorption equilibrium of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) onto the EMCN reached very quickly. The maximum loading capacity of EMCN for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was determined to be 171 and 138 mg/g, respectively. Sorption isotherms were determined both in single component with pure metal solutions and bicomponent systems with different Pd/Pt mass ratios. The results showed that the sorbents had a greater affinity for Pt(IV) than for Pd(II). The total sorption capacity was comparable to that of each metal individually, indicating that the metals compete for the same sorption sites. It was found that 0.4 M HNO(3)-1.0 M thiourea solution provided effectiveness of the desorption of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from EMCN, while 5 M ammonia exhibited the highest selectivity for the tested metal ions.

Abstract:The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction is an efficient organic method for synthesizing biphenyl products. However, its conventional reliance on toxic soluble organometallic palladium catalysts or expensive palladium nanoparticles, along with the need for elevated temperatures and prolonged reaction times, presents a significant challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a palladium-free approach using plasmonic silver nanoparticles that enables the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction to proceed at room temperature under visible light. Utilizing the surface-enhanced Raman scattering characteristics of silver, we conducted dynamic self-monitoring of the reaction. Our findings reveal that this plasmon-induced Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction fundamentally operates as a heterogeneous reaction involving coupling between radicals, distinct from conventional palladium-based reactions. Moreover, the cleavage of C-Cl and C-B bonds, fundamental prerequisite to the coupling, is driven by plasmonic hot electrons and plasmon-induced reactive oxygen species, respectively. These findings not only provide insights into the design and regulation of plasmonic catalysts but also enhance theoretical understanding of the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction in a broader context.

Abstract:Carbon sphere with uniform size is prepared through a simple and green hydrothermal method. Ag particles are loaded on the carbon sphere surface to form a novel plasmonic photocatalyst C@Ag. C@Ag shows two times activity than single Ag component in de-coloration of rhodamine B (Rh.B), and indicates higher performance than P25-N. 85% Rh. B was decolored after 180 minutes. Carbon sphere not only enhances the photocatalytic activity, but also reduces the cost of noble Ag metal. In addition, hydroxyl radical is detected and it acts as important active species during plasmonic photocatalytic reaction.

Abstract:The pH-dependent behavior, including the transformation of 1-naphthol by oxidative polymerization to form precipitates in solution and the adsorption of 1-naphthol onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs), was examined. Neglecting the precipitate loss of 1-naphthol and possibly of similar chemicals may result in the overestimation of their adsorption and inadequate interpretation of the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Surface oxygen-containing groups on CNTs and the dissociated species of these groups can interact with the dissociated and neutral species of 1-naphthol in a way similar to polymerization, thus promoting the adsorption of 1-naphthol onto CNTs. Adsorption onto CNTs may reduce the polymeric precipitates of 1-naphthol in solution by possibly decreasing aqueous 1-naphthol concentrations. These observations and the underlying mechanisms are important for predicting the fate and risks of naphthalene and carbaryl in the environment because 1-naphthol is a primary metabolite of naphthalene and carbaryl. In addition, it is possible to enhance the removal of 1-naphthol and similar chemicals by controlling the pH and designing specific surface functional groups for CNTs.
Silver Nanoparticles Prepared by One-Step Reaction via Reducibility of a Metal–Organic Framework to Remove the Toxic Bromine Ions

Abstract:In this work, an aluminum-based metal–organic framework (MOF), CAU-1-(OH)2, was utilized as the reduction precursor for the first time to prepare an adsorbent with well-dispersed reduced silver (Ag0) nanoparticles. The synthesized Ag0/carbon nanoparticle (Ag0/C-NP) is composed of the carbon-based matrix and Ag nanoparticles with a uniform size of 5–10 nm. Thanks to the feature of the loaded Ag nanoparticles, the obtained material exhibits a high adsorption capacity of bromide (Br–) (177.4 mg g–1), fast adsorption kinetics (∼1 h for reaching adsorption saturation), and good anti-interference ability, which is superior to those of the original MOF and other reported adsorbents. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics were fitted well by using the Langmuir model, the adsorption isotherm regional analysis (Arian) model, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Abstract:We investigated the configuration characteristic and adsorption behavior of 4,4'-thiobisbenzenethiol (TBBT) on the surface of silver nanoparticles (NPs). Under different conditions and preparation processes, several possible surface species were produced including single-end adsorption on a silicon wafer, double-end adsorption and bridge-like adsorption. Although consisting of the same molecule and nano material, different adsorption systems exhibited different spectral characteristics in the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). A density functional theory (DFT) study further verified the corresponding adsorption states. The combined SERS-DFT study provided a framework towards investigating and designing adsorption systems at a molecular level, indicating the potential use in applications such as nano-sensors.

Abstract:The surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)of P-Thioeresol adsorbed on colloidal silver at the incident light of 514.5 nm is reported experimentally and theoretically.The enhancement mechanisms of them are analyzed.The enhancement is mostly contributed from the electromagnetic enhancement.If the coupling effect of two Ag nanoparticles(diameter of 100 nm)with a distance of 2 nm is considered,in the center between two particles,electromagnetic enhancement of SERS is 7.16×107.The static chemical enhancement also plays a role and the enhancement is 6.So,the total enhancement of SERS,including the static chemical enhancement and the electromagnetic enhancement,is Gtotal=Gsc × GEm=4.4 × 108.The surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering(SERRS)of the system is also studied theoretically.When the incident light resonates with the excited state of P-Thioeresol-ag3 complex,the charge transfer mechanism(chemical enhancement)also plays an important role and the strongest charge transfer enhancement can reach up to 106.We visualize the orientation and result of charge transfer between P-Thiocresol and ig cluster on the excitation with charge difference density,which is the directly theoretical evidence for charge transfer.The enhancement of SERRS,including the charge transfer and electromagnetic mechanisms,can reach up to 1013.
Plasmon‐Driven Photochemical Reduction Reaction on Silver Nanostructures for Green Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Surface

Abstract:A nano‐Ag coating with strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the ultraviolet light (UVA) region is prepared by a water‐based silver mirror reaction. UVA irradiation triggers a LSPR‐driven reduction reaction, which transforms the hydrophilic absorbates on Ag nanoparticles (NPs) into hydrophobic moieties. Consequently, the generated hydrophobic moieties and hierarchical roughness result in the formation of stable superhydrophobic surface. Green fabrication of superhydrophobic surface by water‐based processing is still challenging, because introduction of the substances with hydrophilic moieties compromises its superhydrophobicity. Herein, a plasmon‐driven photochemical reduction reaction under ultraviolet light (UVA) irradiation is first discovered and is applied to deoxygenation of hydrophilic organic adsorbates on rough nano‐Ag coating for the formation of stable superhydrophobic surface. A nano‐Ag coating with strong localized surface plasmon resonance in the UVA region is prepared by a water‐based silver mirror reaction and results in a unique chemical reduction reaction on its surface. Consequently, the low residual hydrophilic functionalities and the formed cross‐linked structure of the adsorbate on Ag nanoparticles (NPs) enables the coating to exhibit stable superhydrophobicity against to both air and water. The superhydrophobic Ag NP‐coated sandpaper can also be used as a surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate to concentrate aqueous analytes for trace detection.

Abstract:In this work, surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates with triangular silver nanoprisms (AgNPrs) dropped on copper hydroxide nanowires (CuOHNWs) were evaluated. Abstract:The GFN2-xTB tight-binding quantum chemical method was utilized to investigate the adsorption ability of 2,4-dichlorophenoxylacetic acid (2,4-D) on pristine single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) and silver-doped carbon nanotube (Ag-CNT). The effects of solvents (water, methanol, and acetonitrile) on the adsorption process were evaluated via the linear Poisson-Boltzmann analysis algorithm. The analysis of ionization energy, electron affinity, and global electrophilic indexes indicates that Ag doping alters the electronic properties of CNT through the formation of Ag-C chemical bonds. While the adsorption process of 2,4-D on pristine CNT is primarily of a physical nature, the adsorption on Ag-CNT involves chemical adsorption facilitated by the formation of Ag-Cl and Ag-O bonds. Contributions from non-covalent interactions (such as π-π stacking, van der Waals interactions, etc.) were analysed and clarified through the computation of the reduced density gradient. Our findings suggest that Ag-CNT has significant potential as a material for the adsorption and remediation of 2,4-D.

Abstract:SERS technique was used to study the chemisorption kinetics of Methylene Blue (MB) on the HNO3-etched silver surface. The adsorption kinetic parameters were deduced from different vibrational modes at a low concentration of 3.5×10-6 mol/L, and it showed that MB adsorbed uniformly (monolayerly) on silver surface. However, the adsorptive behavior turned anomalous at relatively higher concentrations and a possible explanation was suggested. In addition, the influence of Cl- ions on the adsorption states of MB was investigated, and it was shown that MB molecules, adsorbed on the silver surface, tended to transform from the 'lying-down' state to the 'end- on'4 state after Cl- ions were added.

Abstract:Colloidal synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals always involves a multitude of ionic and molecular species. How do the chemical species affect the evolution of nanocrystals remains a black box. As an essential ingredient in the polyol synthesis of Ag nanocubes, Cl - has been proposed to co-adsorb on the surface with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) to facilitate shape evolution. However, there is still no direct evidence to confirm the presence of Cl ‐ on the surface of Ag nanocubes while they are suspended in the original reaction solution. By leveraging the high sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering, here we offer direct evidence, for the first time, by resolving the Ag-Cl vibrational peak at 240 cm -1 . This characteristic peak disappears if the synthesis is conducted in the absence of Cl - . Instead, three peaks associated with CF 3 COO - (from the precursor to Ag) are observed. When the sample is diluted with ethylene glycol, all the peaks associated with CF 3 COO - decrease proportionally in intensity, implying the involvement of chemisorption and negligible desorption during dilution. The chemisorbed CF 3 COO - is readily replaced by Cl - due to their major difference in binding strength. The co-adsorbed Cl - forces the carbonyl group of PVP binding to the Ag surface to take a more perpendicular configuration, enhancing its peak intensity. Altogether, these findings shed new light on the roles played by various chemical species in a successful synthesis of Ag nanocubes.
